The Slavonic power strikes back. Probably one of the best known Serbian bands and the favorite Russian Doom Metal label combine their efforts once again to produce a long expected and no less strong release. Doomsters Tales of Dark… with their second full-length album offer more than an hour of melancholic sadness.
If I did not know that Arpad Takač is the main vocal handler in the band, I would say that Aaron Stainthorpe (My Dying Bride) took part behind most of the vocal parts. It is obvious that the lead singer of the band is greatly influenced by the British genius. But the vocals fit the music as it also has many similarities to the aforementioned legendary band. However, the situation with female vocalist Jovana is not so good. I would prefer to have just male vocals here, because Jovana’s voice somehow does not mesh well with the music. Male voices are perfect in this melancholic Doom/Gothic.
You probably already understand that the band is playing slow, dark and sad, melancholic music, which mostly reminds me of the later My Dying Bride albums. The music has many operatic key parts in the background, and the entire tracks have really good instrumental parts. I would prefer to find faster guitar riffs and some double bass drumming, but it is as it is. Considering the growling of Arpad, the music is something into Melodic Death/Doom, but with the huge Gothic atmosphere and mood.
The quality of the release is really high and the entire production is made on the best note. The music at some moments feels a little bit boring, but in general this is a pretty strong album. I still think that such music should avoid female voices – it must carry more growls, more darkness and heaviness inside. So there is still some space left for perfection even if “Perdition Calls” proves the band’s maturity and professionalism.

Standard. Tales of Dark’s Perdition Calls is a standard album in the mediocre doom style of slow tempo songs that plod along unwaveringly with deep male growls punctuated by pretty female singing.

Perdition Calls uses a good deal of keyboard in their songwriting. It sounds fine. In fact, everything sounds fine. The vocals are all good, the production is nice, the album is an acceptable listen. However, artistically, it sounds like Tales of Dark have picked a style that they’re not really sure where to go with, beyond what has already been done unconvincingly by tons of bands before.

Спустя три года после своего дебютного творения “Fragile Monuments”, сербская группа TALES OF DARK возвращается с новым материалом получивший название “Perdition Calls”. Особых изменений в музыке у этого сикстета не наблюдается, это всё тот же неторопливый и атмосферный gothic/doom metal, местами напоминающий ранее творчество легендарных англичан MY DYING BRIDE. В остальном всё тоже самое что мы слышали на прошлой работе этого коллектива, только в более интересном виде. Это же касается и оформления, которое на этот раз сделал известный дизайнер Гуля Хаванчак, который оформлял альбомы таким коллективам как ANNIHILATOR, DESTRUCTION, GRAVE DIGGER и многим другим. В поддержку альбома группы даже сняла постановочный видео-клип на композицию “Sounds of the Ravage”. В общем как видно у группы присутствует профессиональный подход к делу. Думаю, позиции TALES OF DARK на музыкальной сцене после этого релиза только упрочнятся.

Tales of Dark (ToD pour les intimes) a présenté son deuxième Perdition Calls en 2009. C’est donc avec beaucoup de retard que je me penche sur leur cas. J’avoue ne pas connaître du tout, je suis complètement passé à côté de leurs deux précédentes compositions. Je me retrouve donc avec entre les mains un album dont l’artwork est très professionnel, très bien fini, bien pensé puisqu’on retrouve tout de suite le côté gothique sur la pochette.

L’album commence et j’avoue qu’on est en terrain connu. Guitares rhytmique et mélodique sont les protagonistes tandis que le clavier plante le décor. Les voix claires masculines et féminines font leur entrée et ça tient bien la route. Cependant, la musique est légère, manque un peu de profondeur jusqu’au changement de tempo et l’arrivée de la voix gutturale. La musique se fait plus lente et plus pesante. Malheureusement, ces passages sont rares dans Perdition Calls. La musique de ToD se laisse facilement gagner par une ambiance plus légère et plus gothique. Bien sûr le groupe maîtrise parfaitement son domaine, mais leur musique perd un peu en dimension.

Certains crieront au plagiat de groupes comme My Dying Bride ou Draconian, je n’irai pas jusque là. Bien qu’il est vrai que l’influence est bien là, ToD arrive à capter mon attention sur certains passages, notamment des passages à la guitare claire (Sound of the Ravage, Hollow) ou une intro à la basse (The Crown of Venomous Silence). Des petits moments bien inspirés mais malheureusement, un peu courts. Autant je n’accroche pas du tout la musique de My Dying Bride, autant ToD instaure une atmosphère connue certes, mais bien agréable.

Perdition Calls reste un bon album, plus de métal symphonique que de Doom/Death selon moi. La musique sonne très professionnelle, très carrée et très réfléchie. J’aurais aimé cependant une prise de risque plus importante du groupe, avec des passages plus lourds et plus profonds (notamment avec la voix masculine claire qui est vraiment bonne). Le groupe possède toute la maîtrise et toutes les cartes en main pour s’affirmer et prendre plus de risque.s Affaire à suivre!!

A tre anni di distanza dal promettente “Fragile Monuments”, i serbi Tales Of Dark sono ritornati sulle scene con il loro secondo full-length: “Perdition Calls”. Pubblicato dalla Bad Mood Man Records, sottoetichetta della ben nota Solitude, “Perdition Calls” и impreziosito da una bella copertina di color grigio, che raffigura la statua di un angelo che sta cadendo a pezzi. Il libretto, di otto facciate, contiene tutti i testi (di ottima fattura) e le varie informazioni relative alla realizzazione del CD. La formazione che ha inciso questo lavoro consiste in Arpad Takacs alla voce, Jovana Karaianov all’altra voce, Nikola Cavar alla chitarra, Davor Menzildzic all’altra chitarra ed alla tastiera, Darko Stojanovic alla batteria ed Andras Ispan al basso. Come ospite, figura il chitarrista Radovan Skoric. Questa formazione, rispetto a quella di “Fragile Monuments”, vede all’opera un nuovo bassista ed un nuovo chitarrista. Le registrazioni hanno avuto luogo presso gli studi Matrix e Studio 42, tra il gennaio ed il febbraio del 2009.
“Perdition Calls” contiene nove canzoni per piщ di un’ora di musica. I minutaggi delle varie tracce sono tutti piuttosto consistenti, assestati come sono su una media tra i sette ed i nove minuti. La composizione piщ breve, supera di poco i cinque minuti.
Dunque, vi confesso che ho accolto il ritorno dei Tales Of Dark con una certa curiositа. Nella mia vecchia recensione di “Fragile Monuments”, avevo sottolineato alcune particolaritа. In primo luogo, le evidentissime similitudini tra lo stile di questi serbi ed i My Dying Bride del periodo d’oro; secondo, come tali similitudini penalizzassero in qualche modo il talento artistico del gruppo, obiettivamente notevole. L’abilitа compositiva dei Tales Of Dark, il loro grande gusto negli arrangiamenti, gli sporadici picchi di personalitа, avrebbero potuto sfuggire agli ascoltatori piщ superficiali, distratti dai richiami palesi e disarmanti allo storico gruppo inglese. Mi ero pertanto augurato che il gruppo mantenesse l’elevato valore artistico della sua proposta musicale, ma riuscisse allo stesso tempo a personalizzare maggiormente il proprio suono.
E’ stato cosм? I Tales Of Dark sono riusciti a trovare finalmente un loro sound, unico ed inconfondibile? La risposta и negativa, ahimи. Anche se, ad onor del vero, qualcosa si и mosso. Anche se non nella direzione sperata. Ascoltando “Perdition Calls”, infatti, si nota come il gruppo abbia ampliato la propria gamma espressiva, rifacendosi ostinatamente a quella grande stagione che il gothic ha vissuto dal 1991 al 1996. L’influenza preponderante ed ingombrante dei My Dying Bride non и stata cancellata, ma и stata piuttosto affiancata da massicci richiami ad altri nomi importanti di quel genere. Quindi, le varie canzoni di “Perdition Calls” possono suonare a volte come i Paradise Lost, a volte come agli Anathema dei primi lavori; in alcuni frangenti possono avvicinarsi ai The 3d And The Mortal con Kari al microfono, quando invece Jovana non tenta di scimmiottare la Anneke di “Mandylion”. Infine, Arpad non sembra piщ limitarsi ad imitare Aaron Stainthorpe (My Dying Bride), ma tenta anche di rifarsi allo stile vocale di Fernando Ribeiro (Moonspell).
Come il lettore avrа potuto constatare leggendo quanto ho appena scritto, i Tales Of Dark hanno provato a cambiare, ma alla fine sono rimasti vittima del loro difetto principale: quello di essere tristemente derivativi. Ho scritto “tristemente” perchи, anche questa volta, la qualitа dell’album и notevole. Perт le linee vocali, le melodie, i timbri dei vari strumenti ricordano troppo quelli di altri gruppi. E questo penalizza il valore del sestetto di Novi Sad.
“Perdition Calls”, realizzato con un’altra attitudine, suonerebbe in maniera del tutto diversa. Basterebbe poco per trasformare questo tributo al gothic che fu, in un lavoro sм tradizionalista, ma personale. Certo, il gruppo alterna i vocalizzi maschili con quelli femminili, e non rinuncia ad inserire passaggi piщ particolari, o rinvigoriti dalle evoluzioni piщ recenti del genere. Perт non c’и una canzone, in “Perdition Calls”, che non sappia di giа sentito.
Alcune tracce sono spettacolari, ad esempio “Allegoria Of An Eternal Sundown”, oppure “The Crown Of Venomous Silence”. Anche “Sounds Of The Ravage” и emozionante. Nel suo complesso, perт, “Perdition Calls” lascia un po’ di rammarico, perchи ci presenta una band che lascia intuire il suo talento, ma senza esprimerlo al meglio. E’ frustrante tutto ciт.
A conti fatti, “Perdition Calls” и un lavoro per nostalgici e per chiunque voglia tornare, temporaneamente, al gothic e al gothic/death del primo lustro degli anni ’90. Ad un orecchio piщ smaliziato od esigente, perт, “Perdition Calls” non rappresenterа altro che un buon esercizio di stile, ma poco altro.
E’ importante quindi che i Tales Of Dark tentino con tutte le forze di personalizzare il proprio stile. Altrimenti anche la Solitude potrebbe non concedergli piщ la sua fiducia. Tra l’altro, ho visto sul loro sito di MySpace che alle tastiere и subentrata una certa Nina Arandelovic, ed al basso и arrivato Dane Vranes. Speriamo che i nuovi innesti apportino qualche cambiamento, altrimenti i Tales Of Dark si ritroveranno ad essere un’eterna promessa, che non verrа mai mantenuta.

Что интересного можно сказать о типичном sorrow metal-альбоме малоизвестной группы?.. Да практически ничего! Стандартность, предсказуемость, унылость – на этих грубых словах можно было бы и закончить рецензию. Ну, в самом деле… несколько лет назад сербы TALES OF DARK дебютировали весьма неплохим диском Fragile Monuments, который хоть и не блистал оригинальностью, но подавал надежды на то, что команда найдет себя. И вот он, новый альбом. Вокалист все так же косит под Аарона Стейнторпа (MY DYING BRIDE), а гитары все так же вырисовывают незатейливые грустные мелодии, перекликающиеся с тоненьким женским голоском. И если на первом альбоме группе можно было простить столь явный плагиат, то на последующем диске хотелось услышать развитие, чего, однако, не произошло. На первый взгляд, все не так уж и плохо, к тому же реализован Perdition Calls вполне себе качественно. Но музыкантам не удается и на милю приблизиться к таким шедеврам как Turn Loose the Swans, Sear Me, The Crown of Sympathy и др. То, что у них получается – всего лишь блеклая копия классиков. А зачем, спрашивается, тогда вообще играть, оставаясь в тени своих более именитых и талантливых коллег?.. Если только ради самих себя да узкого круга знакомых… ну да, вполне возможно…

Nok et band som går i fotsporene til My Dying Bride og de hermer sågar etter den kjipe, sutrete renvokalen til Aaron Stainthorpe. Det som skiller dem litt ut er adderingen av kvinnevokal, men er det en bra ting? Urk, ikke spør engang. Igjen: alle tekniske kvaliteter er på plass, men du speilvendte hildring så driiitkjedelig det er å lytte til dette oppkoket av ei suppe som allerede var smakløs ved inngangen til 2000-tallet. Gromsevokalen fungerer bra og hadde de kuttet ut de andre vokaltypene ville helhetsinntrykket hevet seg en del. Du skal være særs glad i pregløs gotisk Death/Doom før du plukker med deg denne.

Ну, как тут не вспомнить дурацкий анекдот про армейскую перекличку! “Орлов!” “Я!” “Молодец! Орлом будешь!” “Соколов!” “Я!” “Ого! Соколом будешь…” “Козлов!” “Я…” “Ну, ничего, ничего…”. Бывают, бывают у групп забавные названия: Zadok, Zaebos, Ebitalium и Eblis – ну откуда немцам и полякам знать все секреты этих созвучий! Perdition Calls – сербы; наверное, они тоже неважно знают русский и не догадываются, насколько “режет” наше ухо название их коллектива. С другой стороны, его не забудешь! Ибо музыка вряд ли удивит – классический, готический дум 15-летней давности, да ещё с предельно аутентичным саундом. Обошлось, слава богу, без скрипок, но робкая акустика и клавишные “не от мира сего’ нагнетают характерную для записей “тех времен” атмосферу. Ну, и конечно, два… нет, два с половиной вокала – мужской (чистый/гроул) и женский! Это, замечу, второй альбом сербов – первый выходил в 2006 году. Но и тогда почти никто уже так не играл – даже у стариков вроде My Dying Bride всегда находится, чем в очередной раз удивить слушателя; а новички жанра, вроде Draconian и Swallow The Sun, звучат совсем иначе, современнее. “В плюс”, кроме названия, запишем нашим братьям стремление к сложным гармониям, эмоциональную полноту и преданность избранному пути. Который, к сожалению, уже никуда их не приведет…

This is Tales of Dark’s second album, three years after the pretty successful debut Fragile monuments; an album I definitely enjoyed. It displayed potent melodic doom/death with just a hint of gothic influences, so I was looking forward to hearing Perdition calls. Something evident right from the get go is the development and change in the band’s sound, as they’ve gone for more melody and taken on some more experimental vibes.
It’s not the same amount of heaviness throughout this album in comparison to its predecessor, although it of course has its moments. We’re still talking about doom/death, but with more emphasis on gothic flair. The clean male vocals definitely take the forefront, and he has a fairly strong, deep voice, occasionally switching to growls. But the goth tendencies feels very in your face when the beautiful female voice sets in. It can become a wee bit too melodic for my taste, but a track like Sounds of the ravage implements all of their versatility to perfection. The magnificent melodic riffing creates a heavy base structure as the keyboard lurks behind it, enhancing the melody, and the drumming has a sense of flair to it and all three sets of vocal styles complement each other in a great way. As they move on to a section of clean guitars, and with the female vocals subtlety haunting the sound, we’re offered a break before the true wickedness of the riffing and growling puts an end to the song. This is where I find Tales of Dark to be of their best behavior.
Not saying the following track Unassemble isn’t great, ‘cause it is; following a somewhat similar recipe in song structure and even with a great melodic guitar solo. And as The crown of venomous silence (a terrific song, I might add) commence a sense of mystery comes in play as the absolutely marvelous bass play takes the lead. All tracks have something absolutely great about them, but overall it’s become just a bit too melodic. They do their thing excellently; it’s just my own stubborn mind who can’t handle such vast amounts of melody. But with the addition of the more atmospheric landscapes and experimental vibes rearing its head every now and then the band has moved on from sounding like another follower of My Dying Bride and have taken a step towards making their own mark on the scene.

Плохо быть приверженцем классических и устоявшихся взглядов в мире, где каждый хочет нового, наращивая свои, вихрящиеся, словно ножи мясорубки, аппетиты, разрубая на части каждого идеологически не подходящего, под не успевающую за жадностью человеческой эволюцию. Сербские металисты Tales Of Dark одни из тех, кто за многоточием решили сосредоточить знакомый, статичный и не изменяющийся дум. Остановка на уровне середины девяностых, плотное ассоциирование с My Dying Bride и Anathema, лишь изредка, на самом деле выбирающееся на простор самостоятельного творчества – вот, пожалуй, все ошибки второго полотна музыкантов.

В остальном, все у команды функционирует: глубокий, мягкий бас волочет за собой протяжные гитарные мелодии, переходящие в монотонные, но слабоатмосферные риффы, способные порой на взрывные действия, не менее похожие на больших английских коллег-классиков. Вокал повторяет перипетии развития гитарного сюжета, становясь то страдальческим пением-речитативом, то, щедро рассыпая вокруг звуки внятного, приятного гроула, а удивляя только наличием ноток пафосного баса из гот-рока. Наличествует женский вокал, чересчур, эстрадный, для данного произведения, под которое отведено целое место в официальном составе группы, пусть его обладательница и балуется ролью, хорошо, если треть всех положенных по логике партий. Никак не отличаются от окружающих их в музыкальном мире, партии клавишных, со стандартными семплами и звуками фонов, аккомпанирующих девушке, поддерживающих видимость тональности при гроуле, зато акустические кусочки, вставленные в музыкальное повествование там и тут, не часто, но эффектно, радуют переборами и светлыми мыслями волосатых голов обладателей.

Недостатки альбома есть его же достоинства – отличные, сделанные по всем правилам “The Crown Of Venomous Silence”, “Allegoria Of An Eternal Sundown”, стартовая “Wretched Fate For All” нравятся с первых нот, словно уже лежат в золотом фонде дума много лет, а сейчас просто оказались на свету. А в “Majestic Nothingness” (и не только в ней) с первого же куплете можно понять, о чем я говорю, упоминая готик-рок бас, отрешенный и задумчивый – оказывается, достаточно добавить лишь мазок оттенка, чтобы сделать совсем другое настроение. Тоже хорошо, если бы на той же композиции мелодия не вторила классикам настолько близко – вплотную, на грани фола, как и первая песня. Текстовая основа не менее близка к канонам, а оформление, чуть более расплывчато, чем мы привыкли, но обрушивает нам на головы, знакомых ангелов.

Я рад, что такая команда, как Tales Of Dark продолжается, потому что мне нравится дум, мне понравился первый альбом группы, с поправкой, на действительно свой материал. Но вы предупреждены, а значит, вооружены: это классический дум со слишком малым отступом от самых повторяемых групп. Новизны никакой, а положительные эмоции все равно есть.
