Echoes Through The Catacombs is the forgotten two-song EP that precedes death/doom band Catacombs’ acclaimed and relatively well-known full length, In The Depths Of R’Lyeh. Only 100 copies of this EP were originally pressed and I suppose it was not long before those got sold out. The guys at Solitude Productions thought it to be a good idea to reissue this underground gem and make it available to the despondent souls out there. I wholeheartedly approve of their idea.
“Consigned To Flames of Woe” goes first, plodding arduously like a pachyderm through the endless tunnels of oppressive darkness. With each step the ponderous creature seems to pause for breath, while the sound of its trudge propagates through the obscure passage laid out in front of it. Accentuated by whimsical and eerie tunes, the atmosphere within the catacombs is pensive and sinister. Then, out of the darkness, taking cue from the epic Worship-like riffs, low muffled sounds materialise as if with the consolidation of several lurking shadows, sending a shudder of paralysing dread down your spine. These unintelligibly growled vocals are not so much heard as felt. Around the six-minute mark, early Amorphis harmonies make their bewitching appearance, swirling about urgently like a helpful spirit in a kind of a diaphanous, glowing form, offering you hope and guiding you through your dark predicament. The remainder of the 16-minute song carries on in this way, switching slowly between grim Thergothon-esque plodding and tantalising early Amorphis tunes, between utter despair and cruel vain hope, before ultimately withering away.
In “Echoes Through the Catacombs”, sweet, melancholy tunes reminiscent of Evoken twine around sullen and downcast heavy treading similar to that of Disembowelment while maintaining a tense atmosphere all through. After eroding the composure of the listener for five minutes, a heavy hypnotic riff takes form and plunges you into a bottomless trance. Haunting melodies join in soon after to further disconcert you, until heavy riffs re-emerge a few minutes later and resume plundering your soul’s inherent brightness. Around the 10-minute mark, expansive and elegant Evoken tunes make their sweeping entry, circling over you from far above like seemingly harmless vultures, waiting patiently for the music to take its toll, lingering on till the very end.
The Solitude Productions people thought these two songs were so good that we deserved to hear them twice. Actually the remastered version of the two songs are included as ‘bonus tracks’ for the own personal fulfilment of Xathagorra Mandroth, who is the sole mastermind of Catacombs if you didn’t know already. Save for the pronounced drum sound and the mix seeming a tad more balanced in the remastered version, I couldn’t detect any difference between the two versions (perhaps because I was too immersed in its experience – Mr. Mandroth should be pleased to know that), but I prefer the original one as for me it somehow bears more conviction and honesty, and enhances the darkness and dread. Along with the original material and the remastered tracks, this pressing of Echoes Through The Catacombs lasts for a whole hour and is sure you leave you in a state of abject wretchedness complete with a déjà vu effect.
Echoes Through The Catacombs is an excellent EP from Catacombs, and now that you have a chance to experience its obscured genius, you definitely must. This reissue is limited to 500 copies, so act fast if you don’t want to experience an altogether different kind of sadness.

Echoes Through the Catacombs is really an EP, but this reissue doubles its length with the inclusion of remastered versions of the original songs. Catacombs plays Funeral Doom, and it sure as hell feels like it. Slow, and I do mean s-l-o-w, morbid, sad, melancholic heavy music is what we are served with here, with low growling vocals that lose themselves in the very slow, monotone but heavy and raw guitars. Following the trend, the drumming is equally slow and not particularly “powerful”, which blends in well with everything else here. Crushingly heavy, yet disturbingly calm, Echoes Through the Catacombs is almost like the soundtrack to a descent to hell, with nothing that sounds remotely positive – not an advisable listen if you’re depressive, needless to say.

Experience had taught me to mistrust Funeral Doom Metal one-man projects. The scene is plagued by worthless shit, bedroom projects that grow up fueled by depressed kids that think that the only thing they need to make their band is a cheap guitar and a drum machine.
Funeral Doom is exploding in terms of popularity, but you still have to look to the 90s to find the good bands. CATACOMBS is the exception to the rule; and I mean THE exception, because Xathagorra Mlandroth had proved that it is possible to create extremely competent extreme Doom Metal using just the will of one man, but at the same time he is the living proof that you need a lot of creative resources to achieve success. This EP, the first of the “band”, that now has been re-issued with remastered tracks, is the continuation of the man’s previous project HIEROPHANT (already reviewed here), and it is fantastic and complex inside its rawness. The dreadful wall of sound created drives the listener into a noisy trance, and the growling indeed seems to crawl from the deepest catacomb.
Highly recommended for fans of ESOTERIC, SKEPTICISM and basically anyone who likes his/her Doom crude as fuck.

Az ’Echoes Through the Catacombs’ elsőként 2002-ben jelent meg, szerzői kiadásban, majd 2 év múlva a Blackmetal.com-nál, és most 2007-ben az orosz Solitude Prod.-on adta ki újra. Ezen az albumon bónuszként a 2 dal remaszterizált változatban is szerepel. A műfaj nem más, mint Funeral doom/death, és azt mondom, ha erről a műfajról van szó és erről a kiadóról, akkor nagy valószínűséggel csak jó lehet. A Catacombs zenéje egy nagyon sötét, nyirkos, kietlen hangulatot árasztó félelem. Xathagorra Mlandroth felel minden egyes hangért, tehát egyszemélyes zenekarról beszélhetünk, az ő neve, pedig ismerős lehet a Hierophant, Sect, Inimical zenekarokból. A két dal átlagát tekintve negyedóra körül van, ami már önmagában is jelzi, hogy hosszúra nyújtott, mély melankóliával megáldott szerzeményekről van szó. A ’Consigned To Flames Of Woe’ mocorogva indul, amiben teljes a gyötrelem, szenvedés és a halál jelképeinek a hangulata. Xathagorra vokáljai, teljesen a Föld legmélyéről jönnek: egy nagyon mogorva hörgésről beszélhetünk. A tempó nagyon lassú, az atmoszféra rémisztő és rideg, minden adott, hogy megszeresd ezt a zenét.
A dobra a keményebb ütések sorozata jellemző, remekül illik a romboló gitárhangokhoz. Nem sok váltást figyelhetünk meg, de ettől függetlenül, egyáltalán nem unalmas az album. A kiváló doom riffekkel, a temetési szertartás tökéletesen hangzik ezekben a hosszú és lassú dalokban. Én személy szerint, nem túl sok különbséget érzek a remaszterizált verzió és a régi változat között, de ettől függetlenül az eredeti változatot pártolom és annál maradok. Xathagorra tökéletesen lefesti zenéjével az érzéseit és remekül megalkotta a funeral doom/death stílusra jellemző zenét. Borzasztóan jó album és csak dicsérni lehet. Az ’Echoes Through The Catacombs’ zongora billentyűrefrénei, fantasztikusan jók, fülbecsengő és ugyanakkor zord, hideg és kegyetlen sivárságot eredményez. A vokáljával, pufogó dobjával, földalatti riffjeivel egy tökéletes kaotikus hangulatot eredményez. Nagyszerű és lenyűgöző munka. Szóval a 2 dal közül a második tetszik jobban, de ettől függetlenül az első is nagyon jóra sikeredet. Nem találtam semmilyen hibát az albumban, mindenkinek csak ajánlani tudom.

Vorig jaar heb ik intens genoten van het werkstuk In The Depths Of R’lyeh van het eenmansproject Catacombs. Een album dat vol stond met sfeervolle funeral doom met spannende Lovecraftiaanse teksten. Dit full length debuut zal niet snel een vervolg krijgen want de excentrieke persoon die zichzelf Xathagorra Mlandroth noemt, trok eerder dit jaar de stekker uit dit project. Net zoals hij dat ook al eerder deed met zijn eveneens eenmansproject Hierophant.
In 2003 bracht Catacombs een EP uit getiteld Echoes Through The Catacombs die nu via het Russische Solitude Prod. opnieuw uitkomt in een oplage van slechts 500 exemplaren. Maar dat zijn er al vierhonderd meer dan de originele uitgave. De twee songs duren samen een half uur en zijn gewoonweg meesterlijk. Een heerlijk traag tempo, angstaanjagende leadgitaren met daarover een onverstaanbare gegrom. Sfeervol, leeg en snijdend tot op het bot. Zo hoort funeral doom te klinken.
De twee songs komen trouwens nog eens langs in een opnieuw gemasterde versie, maar dat vind je niet terug op de tracklist omdat Xathagorra deze versies enkel voor zijn eigen bevrediging op dit cd’tje heeft laten persen. Wellicht dat deze man nu terug black metal gaat maken met zijn andere bands Sekt en Inimical, maar toch hoop ik dat hij opnieuw een doomproject start.

Ultra necro sound, with all the hype that means… no cruelty here, though, since Catacombs deliver good doom metal in the vein of the dirtier bands of the genre. Funeral as hell, really. Originally recorded in 2001, this re-edition excreted by Solitude Productions acts as a reminder of an underground band almost forgotten. Going to the music, this is a sheer primeval recording, even in the shape of remastered tracks which conform this release. Yes, I can’t see significant differences between original and revamped versions, the essence is there and that’s the point. I said ‘primeval’ since we’re before a crude recording of a monolithic dark doom metal without any unexpected moves nor variations. The classic typical doom patterns where you only need the fingers of a single hand to count the different riffs or chord sequences of a track, that’s what you’ll find here. There are other classic acts who set the foundations of the style in a more interesting and inspired way; Catacombs didn’t really invent the wheel, nor anything similar. If you haven’t had enough of cold, grim and simple doom, Catacombs would quench your thirst for a while and become a good acquirement to join your CD collection. Add the fact this re-release is limited to 500 copies and you’ll be happy for a while. Slow, deep and hard vibrations ready to get into your brain and infect any trace of joy…

In die tiefsten, dunkelsten und tristesten Abgründe des Funeral Dooms führen uns CATACOMBS, ein Ein-Mann-Projekt von Xathagorra Mlandroth, welches die Nachfolge von HIEROPHANT antrat. Bei “Echoes Through The Catacombs” handelt es sich um einen Re-Release der 2001er MCD, die beiden darauf vertretenen Songs wurden nun remastert und jeweils in der Originalversion als auch der überarbeiteten Version festgehalten, wodurch sich eine genau doppelt so lange Spielzeit ergibt. Genau genommen war das nicht unbedingt notwendig, da sich die beiden Versionen kaum voneinander unterscheiden.
CATACOMBS beklemmende Musik ist natürlich äußerst langsam, fast schon monoton kriechen die zähen, schwerfälligen und pechschwarzen Töne wie Lava aus den Boxen. Die vertonte Apokalypse scheint dies hier darzustellen, die Klangwelten klingen sehr karg, für minimale Abwechslung sorgen lediglich leichte, kaum wahrnehmbare Tupfer. Schleppendes Riffing, minimale, sich ständig wiederholende, kalte Melodien, getragenes Schlagzeugspiel und tiefstes Geröchel sind die Grundsubstanzen dieses Funeral Dooms. Ich persönlich hätte mir eine etwas stärkere, melodischere Ausrichtung gewünscht, denn die Melodien werden hier äußerst dezent, dabei aber dennoch wirkungsvoll, eingesetzt. Denn auf Dauer wirkt das ultradüstere, stilistisch limitierte Gewummere für mich nicht allzu spannend, eine Spur mehr Abwechslung, etwas mehr Mut zur Melodie, dann wäre dieser Brocken doch etwas leichter zu verdauen. Als mögliche Vergleiche fallen mir hier UNHOLY, SKEPTICISM, WINTER, DISEMBOWELMENT, THERGOTHON und EVOKEN ein.
“Echoes Through The Catacombs” klingt genauso, wie es der Titel verspricht: Drückende, bedrohliche Leere, destruktive Töne hallen durch die dunkelsten Katakomben und ziehen den Hörer in einen tiefen Abgrund. Passend hierzu ist auch das minimalistische Booklett in Form von einem Blatt ausgefallen. Nur für absolute Genre-Fans!

Vahvasti Solitude Productionsin tavaramerkiksi muodostunut death/doom viedään Catacombsin Echoes Through the Catacombs -uudelleenjulkaisulla tavallista synkeämpiin hautajaistunnelmiin. Vähemmän yllättäen liikutaankin varsin lähellä kahden suomalaisenkin hidastelulegendan, Skepticismin ja Thergothonin reviirejä. Jokin Catacombsin soundissa kuitenkin ei kohtaa omien mieltymyksieni kanssa. Onko se sitten tunneskaalaltaan erittäin kapea ja aavistuksen voimaton laulu, kelvollisen tummasti soivien särökitaroiden ja lähes heleästi kaikuvan puhtaan kitaran dikotomia vai biisien tavallaan odotettukin yksiulotteisuus? Helpoin vastaus olisi tietenkin “kaikki nämä yhdessä”.
Mitä äärimmäiseksi musiikki menee, sitä enemmän pienillä asioilla on merkitystä. Catacombsin tapauksessa ei esimerkiksi riitä, että kitarat kuulostavat multaisilta. Kysymys on siitä, kuinka multaisilta ne kuulostavat. Kenties tiettyjä ruuveja voisi toivoa kiristettävän loputtomiin; onhan esimerkiksi moni thrash metalin klassikko synnytetty eräänlaisen, osittain varmasti alitajuisenkin nopeuskilpailun nimissä. Funeral doomin yhteyteen sovitettavissa oleva hitauskilpailu kuulostaa kieltämättä kiusalliselta, mutta pointtini onkin tässä se, että väkisinkin välimallin jyrääjäksi jäävä Catacombs ei tee mitään äärimmäisemmin tai paremmin kuin kilpakumppaninsa.
Consigned to Flames of Woen puolivälissä mennään hetken äärihitaan death metalin hengessä, ja tällöin Catacombs onkin kiinnostavimmillaan ja virkeimmillään. Muuten tämä aikaisemmin tänä vuonna jo kuopattu projekti näppäilee lähinnä tylsyyden tummia säveliä – tyylitajuisesti kuitenkin, sanottakoon se bändin puolustukseksi. Uudelleen masteroidut kappaleet ovat omiin korviini perin turha lisä levylle, mutta toisaalta albumin kuulee nyt samalla vaivalla kahteen kertaan peräkkäin. Taustamusiikkia mehevämpään asemaan Echoes Through the Catacombsia on kuitenkin paha nostaa.

Que je suis embêtée … Comment écrire quand on ne ressent rien envers quelque chose ? Voilà, tout le problème est là avec Catacombs et son « Echoes through the catacombs ». Désolée de ne savoir me branler le mou pendant des heures sur quatre notes, de n’avoir su faire de longues phrases sans verbe et avec quinze adjectifs, de n’avoir su correctement expérimenter le monde de Catacombs, désolée. Allez, un effort.
Constitué de deux pistes, une de 16 minutes 22 et l’autre de 13 minutes 38, cet ep est sorti en 2003, estampillé des lettres de Solitude Prods., label russe spécialisé dans le doom. La production est relativement mauvaise pour les lignes de guitare, la disto est pire que celle du premier ampli 15 watts que j’ai eu. Certes à l’époque je le poussais à fond pour faire grincer les dents de maman, mais dans ce disque, ça fait comme mauvais genre. Je n’ai rien contre les gros riffs (à deux cordes dans le meilleur des cas) si chers au doom, mais ici ça ressemble plutôt à des samples de scie sauteuse enrayée. Finissons-en avec les éléments qui m’ont vraiment dérangé dans cet ep. La voix : majestueusement gutturale, tristement monocorde. Mais il est vrai que ça doit être dur pour Bard Xathagorra Mlandroth de gérer en même temps : le chant/les guitares/la basse/la batterie. La basse vient apporter une réelle profondeur au reste. De là à dire qu’elle fait l’effet d’un face à face avec Cthulhu, non je n’irai pas jusque là. Non je ne ferai aucune comparaison avec Lovecraft, bien que ce soit une des principales inspirations de l’homme. La littérature d’HP Lovecraft est pleine de rebondissements, de lenteurs et de rapidités mesurées, à 180° degrés ou presque de ce qui nous est proposé ici. La batterie tient son 20 bpm tout du long, fait peu étonnant. Les seules choses intéressantes selon moi sont les parties de guitare et de basse. Dans le premier morceau, sur la piste « lead », la disto perd de son gain mais gagne d’intelligibilité pour nous plonger –enfin- dans le monde de Catacombs. Dans le second morceau (nommé Echoes through the catacombs), basse et guitare se partagent la vedette. Non pas dans un monde d’horreurs infernales, ni rien qui pourrait illustrer les épitaphes des pires serials killer, ni quoi que ce soit pour invoquer les sorcières d’antan, mais plutôt les atomes d’une angoissante traversée dans une sphère intimiste, très intimiste.
Pas de monstres vert moulus et moches mais des fragments de tristesse. Ce qu’il y a à retenir d’Echoes through the catacombs ? Pas de zombies ni autres morts vivants à la Beetlejuice mais des notes mélanco-nostalgico-délectables parmi tout un farda de doom bien classique…
Ni engouement ni haine. Ni médiocrité ni excellence. Ni ennui ni envoûtement.

Ruské vydavatelství Solitude Productions je i v našich zeměpisných šířkách známo coby doom metalu zaslíbené. A projekt Catacombs je dalším důkazem, že z nastolené cesty tahle firma nehodlá sejít ani krok stranou. Proč projekt? Protože celá nahrávka je dílem jediného muže, který si říká Xathagorra Mlandroth a abych byl konkrétní, tak se postaral o „all music, instruments & vocals“. Dvouskladbový materiál poprvé vyšel v roce 2001 a nyní přichází reedice, které nabízí jak původní, tak remastrované verze obou songů.
První poslech ve mě zanechal skličující dojem – no poslech, já to napoprvé poslechnout do konce nedokázal. Druhý povinný poslech se pak rovnal poslechu závěrečnému. Celá první skladba plyne v bezútěšném monotónním tempu, jehož rychlost lze přirovnat snad jen k rychlosti hlemýždě na procházce – prostě ultra ultra pomalu. Tak pomalu, že se čeká na každý další úder bubnu, na každou alespoň malou změnu riffu či na nějaký osvěžující moment. A ejhle – žádný osvěžující moment nepřichází celých dlouhých necelých 17 minut, protože občasné kytarové jakoby sólo za něj nepovažuji.
V druhém songu dostávají prostor klávesy, které alespoň trochu další ponurost zpestřují takovým podivným žbluňkavým zvukem. Zpěv je stejný jako v prvním případě – nesrozumitelný hluboký growl tahaný nejspíš až ze žaludku. Pořád neskutečně pomalu, případně ještě pomaleji, a když na to přijde, tak i nejpomaleji (smích – ale opravdu se tahle hudba nedá jinak popsat).
Když střídmá hudba, tak také střídmý obal, respektive pouze jediný list, na titulu vchod do katakomb, na druhé straně fotka autora všeho a tak málo informací, že se člověk nedozví vůbec nic.
Ne, že bych považoval album za úplně zbytečné, jen mi šedesátiminutová stopáž přijde takřka nestravitelná. Příznivci funerálního a katakombového doom metalu si třeba smlsnou a propadnou po vyslechnutí téhle placky do ještě větší deprese. Mě to spíše otrávilo.

Da er vi tilbake til Xathagorra Mandroth og den mørke lille hulen hans. Han holder ikke bare på med Hierophant, men også prosjektet Catacombs opptar mye av hans tid. Med å bruke samme promotion-bilde på både Catacombs og Hierophant så har man kanskje tid til litt mer og kanskje denne gangen skulle det bli litt bedre enn en ener i Icon Music Mag.
Faktisk så er ikke dette så værst som Hierophant var. Det blir fremdeles spilt doom metal, men denne gangen med litt bedre produksjon og dermed kan vi faktisk høre de underliggende paranoia-melodiene. Det er nemlig disse melodiene og det treige seige tempoet som kjennertegner ei god doom-plate i mine øyne.
Denne skiva består av 2 lange spor og hadde det ikke vært så kjedelig som skiva er så hadde dette funket. Jeg søker også litt mer variasjon når jeg hører på doom, dette blir for likt mange steder og Catacombs er på ingen måte nyskapende innenfor sjangeren. Dette er 3 ganger bedre enn Hierophant og plata lander derfor på en 3 av 10 poeng.

This copy of “Echoes Through Catacombs” I’ve got in my hands is the re-released version of the “cult” debut EP of this obscure Doom Metal band formed by Xathagorra Mlandroth after leaving his former project Hierophant behind. The original version of this EP were released under Cthulhu Productions in 2003 and consisted in just two tracks clocked at 30 minutes, this CD besides featuring these two tracks in its primitive original version also includes the remastered versions of each one… the results: about an hour of agonizing and torturous Doom Metal at its best. Those familiarized with the obscure sound of Hierophant will hardly find a negative point at this EP; the unmerciful sound of Catacombs follows up with the primordial and monolithic sound of Xathagorra Mlandroth primitive incarnation in a, slightly varied, but no less obscure manner. The dense, monolithic and droning atmosphere created by the impenetrable wall of immense riffs is complemented by some occasional macabre and suffocating lead guitar lines reaching its highest point at “Consigned to Flames of Woe”… The vocal work here is as remarkable as the whole instrumentation, delivering thickness, tension and enormously contributing with the whole work’s infernal aura. This EP, even when shows a slightly (very slightly) varied approach in comparison with Hierophant’s works, still maintains an intense hypnotic, trance-like atmosphere, increased by the repetition of the tracks, which allows you to get deeper and deeper into this catastrophic piece of art… Everyone fascinated with the esoteric and sombre visions of this world should definitely check this release out… fans of Funeral Doom Metal, this is an album you definitely can’t miss… By the way, this version of “Echoes Through Catacombs” is limited to 500 copies and includes an entirely new artwork (as usual with Solitude Production’s re-releases). Catacombs is the funeral doom vehicle of morbid American Xathagorra Mlandroth, also known (somewhere, I’m sure…) for his work with Hierophant. Last year, I purchased the sumptuous double vinyl picture disc version of his debut album “In the Depths of R’lyeh” and this was an inspired decision as it sounds incredible on the deck, especially in the dark of night. When I heard that Russian label Solitude Productions was re-issuing the 2003 mini-album, I made quick contact to seek a copy … and here it is:
The original Cthulhu Productions/Antinomian CDr pressing of “Echoes Through The Catacombs” was painfully limited, so not too many grumps got their hands on this devil until now. Essentially, the release comprises two songs which clock in at just short of 30 minutes. However, the actual running time has been doubled to almost an hour by the inclusion of remastered versions of the same two tunes. A bit dumb that, I have to say. Then again, the tracks are free so where’s the harm?
Minor bonus track quibbles aside, what we have here is an exemplary exercise in underwater snail’s pace doom that just drags out almost forever and reaches into the deepest depths of the psyche. Infinity can be an entertaining place, even when there’s suffering taking place. Challenging Disembowelment and Esoteric for sheer sonic heaviosity and rubbing shoulders with the muse of Evoken and Nortt, this is music for watching dinosaurs to.

Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger Hierophant kann die erste EP „Echoes Through The Catacombs“ mit einem deutlich besseren Gitarrensound aufwarten, was den beiden Stücken sehr zugute kommt. Selbstverständlich herrscht hier auch die bekannte Monotonie dieser Spielart vor: sprich – schleppendes Riffing, gurgelnder, alptraumhafter Gesang der vom Schmerz der Welt wehklagt und einen durch seine drückende Leere und eminente Kälte in den Wahnsinn zu treiben scheint. Aufgelockert wird das ganze durch dezente Gitarrenleads – einfach aber wirkungsvoll.
Die Platte fällt niemals stilistisch aus dem Rahmen und wer Überraschungen erwartet, wird wohl am Spieler einpennen. Hier regiert Leere und die wird mit Überzeugungskraft dargeboten und gelebt. Das Re-Release wurde durch zwei Bonus Tracks aufgestockt – hierbei handelt es sich schlichtweg um Remasters der beiden Originalsongs, die sich grundsätzlich nur sehr wenig von den ursprünglichen Songs unterscheiden. Mir persönlich hätten zwei gereicht, aber wenn der Großmeister das so wünscht….
Auch hier fällt das Solitude Re-Release ausschließlich durch seine minimalistische Bookletgestaltung auf, die ein wenig den Gesamteindruck einer sonst sehr ansprechenden Platte schmälert. Also wer dieses Stück Funeral bisher noch nicht sein eigen nennt, sollte hier zuschlagen. Egal, was man von den beiden Bonussongs hält, „Consigned to Flames of Woe“ & „Echoes Through the Catacombs“ sind sehr coole Stücke, die man als Fan dieser Spielart von Musik sicher mögen könnte. Zudem empfehle ich, in die etwas aktuellere Veröffentlichung „In the Depths of R’lyeh“, die rein quantitativ noch deutlich mehr zu bieten hat, reinzuhören.

Het Amerikaanse Catacombs, een solo-project van Xathagorra Mlandroth, bracht in 2002 een ep uit op cd-r genaamd Echoes Through the Catacombs. Twee jaar later werd de ep op de zelfde wijze nogmaals door black-metal.com uitgegeven, maar kennelijk was de vraag naar deze ep dusdanig groot dat het Russische label Solitude Productions nu komt met een tweede re-release, maar nu op een normale geperste cd en met vier tracks in plaats van twee.
De heer Mlandroth is ook bekend als de man achter Hierophant, en ook onder de naam Catacombs maakt deze heer een behoorlijk extreme vorm van funeral doom/death. De naam Catacombs past erg goed bij de sound en sfeer die dit album heeft, dikke bakken galm zorgen voor een erg spooky sfeertje. Zelfs de zwaar logge grunt is voorzien van een fikse hoeveelheid galm waarbij je behoorlijk het idee hebt dat je in de catacomben van een eeuwenoud gebouw staat.
Voor melodieuze elementen of muzikale versiersels is op dit album geen plaats. Veel lage gitaren, kalme drums, een logge grunt met een toetsenloopje erover is wat je voorgeschoteld wordt. Zwartgalligheid ten top en daardoor niet voor elke doomliefhebber weggelegd.
Als extraatje op deze rerelease staan de twee nummers van de ep er nog een keer op, maar dan geremasterd. Veel aan gesleuteld is er volgens mij niet, aangezien ik amper verschil hoor, het geluid is iets netter en transparanter maar dat valt maar amper op. Ach, het scheelt je een keer op play drukken ..

Мрачный коридор с угрюмо-серыми колоннами уводит взор слушателя во тьму, за которой кроется Ужас… Узреть так и не удастся, что, скорее всего, к лучшему; однако у вас есть возможность ощутить его воплощение в звуках, порожденных нездоровым творческим воображением господина Xathagorra Mlandroth.
Радикальный funeral metal поглотит заживо все посторонние мысли, а вместе с ними и остатки каких-либо позитивных эмоций в вашей душе, если таковые вообще имелись. В катакомбах нет места радости!
Зачастую плохая запись портит впечатление от материала. К рецензируемому диску данный факт не относится. Здесь звук является неотъемлемой частью атмосферы. Действительно, создается впечатление, что музыка звучит из глубокого подземелья. Мощные, грубые риффы и раскаты грозного рыка эхом доносятся до наших ушей, вселяя страх неизведанного… и, что интересно, помимо этого звуки Echoes Through the Catacombs вызывают непреодолимое желание познать, исследовать бездну. Словно под гипнозом, сознание заставляет вас спуститься во мрак, туда, откуда еще никто не возвращался. Ну что же, вы со мной?…

КАТАКОМБЫ… Кто знает, какое Зло хранят в себе древние подземелья выстроенные неизвестной расой. Некоторые образы этого Зла раскрыл перед нами еще Г. Лавкрафт, другие продолжают открывать его многочисленные последователи, среди которых немало музыкантов, черпающих вдохновение в причудливых образах, созданных гениальным безумцем. Человек, скрывающийся под абсолютно лавкрафтианским псевдонимом Хатагорра Мландрот – один из них, а его музыка… Его музыка – ключ ко входу в те самые катакомбы. Если вы вдруг окажетесь перед закрытыми вратами в Бездну (неважно, наяву или во сне) ни в коем случае не вспоминайте об этих звуках. Не дай боги они прозвучат в вашей памяти и тогда… Нет, об этом лучше не говорить. Понятие funeral-metal далеко не в полной степени отражает то, что записано на дорожках “ECHOES THROUGH THE CATACOMBS” – это скорее собрание пойманных в ловушку звуков, извлеченных из самых глубин подсознания, из мрачных и сырых пещер, таящихся в нашей памяти, из бесконечных лабиринтов мозга, в которых прячутся самые неведомые чудовища. Медленно один гитарный рифф сменяет другой то ли по воле самого музыканта, то ли по воле чего-то, что водит его руками, медленно из самой глубины чрева (человека или хтонического создания?) накатывает рык, заставляющий дыбом подниматься шерсть на загривке (ведь ваше сознание уже полностью превратилось в сознание зверя, учуявшего опасность), а треск статических помех, раздающийся в многочисленных паузах только усиливает чувство абстрактного первобытного страха. Что это за помехи, откуда они взялись, что за голоса в них чудятся – нет ответа. Неожиданно пробивающаяся в начале второго трека мелодия напоминает саундтрек к фильмам Лючио Фульчи, только вот нет в ней успокаивающей искусственности киномузыки – она словно родилась сама собой в той безымянной Бездне, и что придет вместе с ней – ведомо лишь древним забытым богам. Можете считать звуки, пойманные Хатагоррой, чем-то сродни эмбиенту, можете – дрону, можете подобрать им еще какое-то определение, которое позволит вам похоронить за классификацией вызываемую ими тревогу, но она все равно пробьет себе дорогу через все выдуманные ярлыки. Впрочем, для тех, кому от путешествия в катакомбы стало совсем уж не по себе, Вергилий-экскурсовод предлагает облегченную версию своего маршрута. Из ремастированных версий обеих композиций тщательно убраны все посторонние шумы и помехи, в результате чего они лишились значительной части своей атмосферы, превратившись в этакий аттракцион “Пещера Ужасов”. Он тоже, конечно, способен напугать непосвященного, но уже далеко не так, как первый вариант альбома. И тысячу раз прав сам мессир Мландрот, который при переиздании предпочел оставить альбом в его первоначальном виде. Но ведь не все же могут встретиться с Запредельным лицом к лицу – кому-то новая адаптация плененных в 2001 году звуков покажется более приемлемой. Для них – эти бонус-треки. Ну а остальным – счастливо выбраться из-под земли или… никогда не открывать врата.

На минувшей неделе в рамках подготовки к очередному прослушиванию данного диска было решено посетить показ кинокартины “Катакомбы” с участием омериканской поп-звезды, но не удалось… Интересно, съели её в этом фильме или нет? В любом случае, надо порыться в локальной сети – уже кто-то, наверняка, выложил пиратскую версию этого ширпотреба. Тем же, кто не в курсе, сегодня расскажу о лицензионном издании Катакомб, но Катакомб совсем другого профиля.
После выпуска компакта Hierophant “The Tome” Solitude Productions закономерно подготовили издание последнего сольного проекта Ксатагорры Мландрота – MCD 2004 года Catacombs “Echoes Through The Catacombs”. Итак, материал наиболее близок к funeral doom нежели то, что мы слышали на альбоме Hierophant, собственно то, что в оригинале “Echoes Through The Catacombs” содержит всего две дорожки общей протяжённостью около получаса, уже говорит о многом. Но сразу же спешу заметить и тот факт, что особенностью отечественного издания стали доработанные версии обоих песен, прошедшие ремастеринг. Что фанатов, а таковые есть, порадовать должно – разница ощутимая. Итак, обе композиции пропитаны духом угрюмого нигилизма и сырого воздуха подземелий, из которых живым мало кто возвращался, а подтверждением тому служит раздающийся из их глубин глухой и грозный рёв – вот он какой андеграундный doom из Нью-Джерси! Кстати, участники Evoken обитают примерно в часе езды от Ксатагорры… Но на саунд, само собой, это влияния ровным счётом никакого не оказывает. Индивидуальный, сдержанный на эмоции, крепкий и цепляющий материал, который придётся по вкусу тем, кто в doom знает толк. Лицам же, страдающим расстройствами психики, клаустрофобией и склонным к затяжным депрессиям диск к прослушиванию не рекомендуется.
Хочется надеяться, что лэйбл будет последователен и в ближайшее время порадует нас (ну или, во всяком случае, меня) последним на сегодняшний день релизом Catacombs – “In The Depths Of R’Lyeh”, вышедшем в 2006 году на Moribund.«

Переиздание раритетного мини-альбома CATACOMBS “Echoes through the Catacombs”, который раннее выходил только на CD-R в количестве всего 500 штук, безусловно – порадует всех поклонников CATACOMBS, который считается культовым one-man проектом в стиле funeral doom metal. Диск издан с двумя бонус-треками и новым оформлением, по традиции выполненным самим мастермайндом CATACOMBS и HIEROPHANT – Xathagorra Mlandroth. Если вам нравится музыка HIEROPHANT, то диск CATACOMBS вы должны приобрести без всяких раздумий.

Собиратели всяких редкостей, относящихся к жанру фьюнерал-дум, наверняка должны обратить внимание и на это переиздание двухпесенного миньона one-man band Catacombs. В отличие от оригинала, выходившего на CD-R тиражом в 500 штук, его новая версия стала больше в целых 2 раза – за счёт того, что оба трэка подверглись ремастерингу и были добавлены на диск в качестве бонуса. Итого – 60 минут тотальной депрессии и любительского саунда.
