This is a side project of a black metal band Twilight is Mine from the suburbs of Moscow. Several musicians have been heard in a well known Moscowian funeral doom band Comatose Vigil. Those guys – Stellarghost (keys) and Hater (bass/guitars) began this project. Present Comatose Vigil vocalist took the vocal duties together with the drums in this project.
The first full length album “Liquid Dimensions Change” brings you six tracks with the total length of 60 minutes. This is classic funeral – doom like it was meant to be. Thin of the bands as: Shape of Despair, Coliseum and of course the main band of the participating musicians – Comatose Vigil. At the same time the music is very versatile. You will find very sludgy and muddy parts combined with some beautiful melodies.

L’esprit abstrait… Cet esprit qui voit ce que nul ne voit. Un esprit qui perce à travers l’obstacle de la matière même et qui perçoit bien au-delà laissant entrevoir la lueur de l’aura éthérée qui demeure au sein de chaque entité, de chaque notion…
L’esprit abstrait enfonce son regard acéré pénétrant l’essence même de la vie et dévoile dans sa perception une dimension bien particulière. Derrière son voile illusoire, cette dimension nous apparaît sous l’aspect d’un sentier éperdument ondulatoire, obscure, troublant. Au fur et à mesure que le regard s’étend, le sentier semble converger étroitement vers une sorte de tunnel étrangement obscurci dont les parois ornées de formes de désespoir évoquant un scepticisme aussi dérangeant qu’aiguisé. Par de là, un étendu nuage brumeux impose son règne incontestable partout autours et c’est avec une délicatesse morbide que la lueur de son spectre énigmatique nous parvient, qui au-delà de son apparence fascinante cache une amertume envahissante. Ce portrait ainsi dressé fut partagé par bien des esprits certes, mais la dimension que révèle l’esprit abstrait ne manque pas de profondeur et de richesse.
Muni d’une sérénité à la fois pénible et douloureuse, l’esprit abstrait nous entraîne aux abords de ce sentier et dans sa marche aussi lancinante que tumultueuse, il éveille peu à peu nos sens laissant transparaître une puissante odeur âcre, nauséabonde, emplie d’un doux souffle pestilentiel qui vient troubler la quiétude irritante qui hante cette traversée.
Et c’est dans un rythme boueux et ralenti que l’esprit abstrait entame son avancée funéraire à travers ce plan étendu… Avec chaque pas de plus rend les tourments encore plus harcelants, chaque pas de plus rapproche encore plus du néant…

Mais uma banda de Funeral Doom da Rússia. Nos últimos anos, a cena russa do Metal tem finalmente começou a ganhar exposição no mundo ocidental, mas a maioria dos metalheads ainda luta para falar mais do que algumas bandas de qualquer ex-estados soviéticos. Muitos poderão associar o país, com grupos como Arkona e seu Folk Metal, mas o sombrio Funeral de hinos do Abstract Spirit deve ganhar o mundo, com a guerreira gravadora Solitude Productions, a maior gravadora de lá depois da Stygian Cript. Liquid Dimensions Change é puro Funeral Doom, lento, desesperador, bebendo na fonte tipicamente finlandesa (outrora, os ursos soviéticos eram os inimigos maiores o então tranqüilo território finlandês). Hoje, chupinham até nas influências musicais. Cada riff rastreia juntamente terrivelmente lento e cada acorde é tão carregado de dor e desespero, que todas as cores parece ser sugado para fora da sala. As texturas aqui são cinzas e grafites. Não é terrivelmente original, mas o simples esmagamento vigor do presente melancólico empolga. Se o disco der qualquer sinal para sair da Mãe Rússia no futuro, temos alguns deliciosamente depressivos vezes à frente de nós. Se você estiver em Funeral Doom no momento, esta é a horda! Curiosidade, o grupo é projeto paralelo da banda de Black Metal Twilight Is Mine dos subúrbios de Moscou. Outros convidados locais moscovitas da Doom band Comatose Vigil fazem por aqui. Estonteante.

Az orosz funeral doom trió (A.K.- ének, dob; Hater- gitár, basszusgitár; Stellarghost- szintetizátor, vokál) kétéves múltjának debütanyaga ez a korong. Sötét harmóniák, vontatott, monoton ütemek, mélybe zuhanások a jellemző színek az egész nagy semmit átölelve. Félelem, fájdalom, görcsök az egyik oldalon, felszabadulás, megnyugvás, elfogadás a másikon. Kettősséget próbál kifejezni minden szám a maga nemében, ha nem is tudatosan. Túl sok információt nem találtam a zenekarról, ezért nem is tudom, hogy nem egy project-e csak az egész.
A nyitótétel, a From Behind The Verge intenzív spirituális erővel indul, a témák lassú őrlése, a szintetizátor szőnyege őrjítő, és mindezt fokozza egy elég koszos, zajos sound, ami valami hihetetlenül jól üt. A.K. hangján a legsötétebb bugyrokból üvölt fel a lélek, egy helyen gyengébb csak a gitár, a szám közepe táján… érthető, hogy milyen szálon indulna, de nem szól elég erősen. A kilencperces tétel alap funeral doom, nagyon csekély death metal feelinggel.
A To Kiss To Emptiness… követi a sorban, egy monoton, fájdalmas bolyongás körbe-körbe saját bensőnk mélyén. A szintetizátor harmóniái halotti csendet árasztanak, míg a dob ütemei beverik lassan a szeget a koporsófedélbe, a gitár hangjai pedig a néma sikoly szétfoszló varázsa. Eszméletvesztés és eszmélés egyetlen tömör pillanatban, esőfelhők színezte ég alatt, egy gyászos menet közepén. Az üreg nyitott szája lassan közelít. A zenei szerkezet végig ezt sugallja, a zongorabetét zaklatottsága csak ráadás.
Fájdalmas, de szép képek villannak be, ahogyan a Ruined című dalban is. Vontatott ütemek adják az alapot itt is, monoton hangok kavalkádjává sűrítve az összképet, de ez teljesen rendben van, a funeral doom erről szól. Súlyos hangzás, beteg gitártémák, kipontozott dobrészek… a sötét, komor hangulat egy percig sem enyhül, csak a lelki görcsök kiváltotta szánalmas testi vergődés érződik, a kíntól táncoló hús lüktetése. A szólórész finomsága, precizitása szépen kidolgozott részt eredményezett, és mindenképp karakteressé teszi a számot. A szintetizátor itt kissé a háttérbe szorult néha, a keverés ezen a téren nem a legtökéletesebb, de ha fülel az ember, azért kihallja…
A Sarabanda egy nyugtalan, felkavaró nóta, az elhagyatottság kellős közepén. Felépítése sziklaszilárd vonalvezetésen nyugszik, az ének remekül árnyalt játéka néhol a szinti által egy kis kórussal tetézve elementáris erőket csal elő. Sötétség mindenhol, eső utáni illat, hideg, őszi szél… csak a sötétségnél még komorabb, kopasz, fekete törzsű fák súlyosabbak a vásznon, amit a zene segítségével festenek a zenészek… lehajtott fejek, menekülés az én elől, tagadás. Nem egyszerű leírni, kifejezni a zene által közvetített érzéseket…
Az Apostasy a leghosszabb track az anyagon a maga 13:47-es idejével. Súlyos hangulattal nyit ez is, hasonlóval, mint a From Behind The Verge, szintetizátorharmóniák, melankolikus gitárjáték teszi meghatározóvá, persze Stellarghost vokálja meg egy tébolydává varázsolja a hangulatot… érdekes témavezetés, az biztos, és mennyire kifejező. Ebben a számban fordul elő először, hogy A.K. nem csak hörögve énekel, hanem egy kissé karcosabb hangon úgymond elmondja a szöveget, kissé prózaivá téve ezzel a hatást. Finom témák ötvöződnek ebben a dalban is, a puszta, nyers és eklektikus vonallal. A végén bejön egy effektekkel teli hangzás, egy teljesen más világ, egy teljesen más hangulat. Rezgések az élet és halál mezsgyéjén. Szép és taszító egyben, ez ennek a stílusnak a védjegye, és összessége, és bármilyen fura is, elmondhatatlanul gyönyörű ez a zene…
Az utolsó szám, a címadó Liquid Dimensions Change egy dallamosabb résszel indít, a különböző kis betétek, alapok pedig csak még jobban kiemelik a semmiből ezt a dalt, ahogy a monoton dobtémára felépül a szerkezet. Mialatt bejön az ének, a szintetizátor súlyos hangokat épít be az ütemek alá, és a gitár is torzítottra vált. Egy dallamosabb betét után (persze nem kell azt hinni, hogy a tempó vagy a hangulat nagyot változna) újra visszatérnek a lázállapotba, ahol az ember egyszer magához tér, máskor meg a víziók rabjává válik. Ez mindent kifejez. Ébrenlétet, valóságot, álmokat, reménykedést. Fájdalmas? Mély? Igen. De ugyanabban a pillanatban fel is old. Csak ajánlani tudom a lemezt minden doom kedvelőnek, nem kételkedem benne, hogy a polcukon fog kikötni.

ENGLISH VERSION:
This is the debut album of the Russian funeral doom trio (A.K.- vocal/drums, Hater – guitar, bass, Stellarghost – synth, vocal), which exists for two years. The characteristic colours are dark harmonies, dragging, monotonous beats and fallings in the depth embracing the whole great-big nothing. Fear, pain, cramps are there on the first side, on the other side however, there is release, solace and acceptation. In its way, every track wants to express ambivalency in a not surely intended way. I have not found too much information about the band, therefore I do not know whether it is a project or not.
The opening track ‘From Behind the Verge’ starts with an intense, spiritual force. The slow ground of the themes and the synth-carpet are maddening, and the quite dirty, noisy sound, which has a fantastic additional effect, even escalates them. With the voice of A. K. the soul howls from the darkest circles of Hell; the guitar is only weaker in the middle region of the track… It can be understood, which path would be chosen, but its sound is not loud enough. The nine-minute-long track is a basic funeral doom with a very little death metal feeling.
The next in the row is ‘To Kiss to Emptiness…’, which is a monotonous, painful roaming in a continuous circle in ourselves. The harmonies of the synth spread the dead unbroken silence, while the beats of the drum drive the nails into the cover of the coffin; the voice of the guitar is the fraying magic of a numb scream. It is faint and coming back in a single, brief moment under the sky coloured by watery clouds in the middle of a funeral procession. The mouth of the cave is slowly approaching. The musical structure suggest continuously this approaching, the harassed piano part is only an addition.
Painful but nice pictures come in our minds, in the ‘Ruined’, as well. Dragging beats give the base in this track, too, densing the image into a cavalcade of the monotonous notes, but it is totally alright, the funeral doom is exactly about this. There are heavy sound, sick guitar themes, dotted drum parts; the dark and gloomy feeling does not ease at all either for a single moment, only the miserable flurry caused by the cramps in the soul and the pulsation of the flesh dancing due to the torment can be felt. The fineness and precisity of the solo part resulted in a well-constructed part making the track really characteristic. The synth is here sometimes in the background; the mixing is not the most perfect in this way, but if one harks, it can be heard.
‘Sarabanda’ is a restless, unsettling song in the very centre of the desolation. Its construction is based on a rocky tracing, the play of the perfectly shaded vocals together with the choir by the synth reveal elemental forces. There is darkness everywhere, the smell of the landscape after rain and cold, autumn wind; only the bold, black trunks of the trees that are more gloomy than the darkness are heavier on the canvas painted by the musicians by their music. There are turned down heads, escaping from the self, negotion. It is not easy to describe the feelings given by the music…
‘Apostasy’ is the longest track on the album with its duration of 13:47. It opens with a heavy feeling, similarly with the ‘From Behind the Verge’; it gets dominating by synth harmonies and melancholic guitar parts, and the feeling turns into a bedlam owing to the vocals of Stellarghost… It is sure, it has an interesting theme track, and how expressive it is… This is the first track in which A. K. ‘s vocals are not only growls, but a speech in a bit hard voice saying the lyrics, causing a prosaic effect. Fine themes are alloyed in this song, as well, with a bare, coarse and eclectic path. In the end a sound full of effects comes, which is a totally different world and a totally different feeling. They are vibes on the balk of life and death. It is nice and repelling in one; this is the brand and the whole bulk of this genre, and whatever strange to say, this music is inexpressibly beautiful…
The last, the title track ‘Liquid Dimensions Change’ starts with a quite melodic part, and the various small insertions, basics emerge the track even better out of the nothing, while the structure is being constructed on the monotonous drum themes. While the vocal comes in, the synth builds heavy tones under the beats and the guitar gets also distorted. After a quite melodic part (of course, you need not think that the tempo and the feeling changes a lot) they return to the state of the fever where one either comes back or gets the prisoner of the visions. This expresses everything: the wake, the reality, the dreams and the hope. Is it painful? Is it deep? Yes, it is. But it releases in the same moment. I can only suggest this album to any doom fans. I do not doubt that it will be soon in their shelves.

My first thought was that this funeral doom trio sounded very similar to another Russian project, namely Comatose Vigil. This would not be surprising, as they share a vocalist, and the likely reason why they evaded the usual demo route and delved straight into recording this, their debut recording. The major difference between the two is that Abstract Rapture is possessed of a fuller sound and more majestic soundscapes, resulting in a slightly more accessible but no less claustrophobic listen. These are minor differences — I could name any number of bands with greater deviations in sound between two successive albums, and this could very well be the path that Comatose Vigil would have taken. Compared to many others in the genre, this could be funeral doom lite; tempos are slow, but not as slow as they could be, the vocals can be followed along with a lyric sheet and do not meld into an extended, ultra low-pitched growl. The repetition level remains high, but they rarely step over into monotony, and are possessed of a sense of progression that allows them to be appreciated as “true” songs heading towards a destination and not just meandering atmospheric filler. Like grindcore and black metal, funeral doom is all too often a refuge for the marginally talented, but this trio is not one of them.

Just in time for Halloween, I have the perfect haunting album for you. Russia’s Abstract Spirit debut with Liquid Dimensions Change, one of the creepiest hours of funeral doom you will ever hear. The grouping is actually a combination of members of the Russian black metal group Twilight is Mine and the vocalist/drummer of another Russian funeral doom band, Comatose Vigil. I’ve never previously heard any material from Twilight is Mine but Comatose Vigil are an outstanding band and one of my favorites in the genre, so I expected good things from this album.
The keyboard heavy sound of Abstract Spirit is very reminiscent of Shape of Despair, purveyors of some of the eeriest doom ever put to record. That said, Shape of Despair would love to have a track like the opener, From Behind the Verge, in their catalog. A positively stunning and atmospheric 9 minutes, this is one of the finest examples of keyboard driven funeral doom you will ever hear. Stellarghost weaves chilling keyboard melodies that enhance the guitar and bass of Hater and give an overall vast, expansive sound. À.Ê.’s drums sound cacophonic and hollow, furthering the bottomless feel. His vocals are refreshing in that, where many low growls tend to lack any punch and sound whispery, here they are both extremely low and extremely powerful. Add all these together and you have quite a mesmerizing sound, and one that continues into the second standout track, To Kiss the Emptiness…. In this track a chanting spirit choir sound is introduced, once again very similar to Shape of Despair, and it adds another dimension of darkness. This tactic is also utilized well in Sarabanda, and these soft harmonious vocal sounds manage to help even two tracks as evil as these sound somehow beautiful. This high level of quality is not maintained throughout the album, though that is not to say the other tracks are poor. Ruined, for instance, has more of a guitar centered approach and, while the riffing is strong, it just does not have the supremely massive feel of the first two songs. The pace of funeral doom can lull you to sleep without the introduction of atmospherics or other wrinkles, and there were a few times on this album where I found this to be the case.
Russia’s Solitude Productions is building quite the roster of funeral doom bands, and Abstract Spirit have placed themselves at the forefront with Liquid Dimensions Change. Though it is positively haunting, the keyboards and choral effects give it an epic and soothing aura that many funeral doom bands lack, though it cannot avoid some of the pitfalls common to this genre. If it were not for releases by Esoteric and a forthcoming album by Monolithe, I would say this would be the funeral doom album of the year.

Abstract Spirit er sideprosjektet til to russiske herremenn som til daglig har sitt virke i black metal-bandet Twilight Is Mine. I 2006 bestemte de seg for å danne et prosjekt hvor de fikk utløp for langt dystrere tanker og ideer enn hva som var mulig i deres eksisterende band og voilà, et nytt band så dagens lys! De fikk med seg vokalisten i Funeral Doom-bandet Comatose Vigil og det er da også den sjangeren dette bandet opererer innenfor. Det låter langt mer mektig og symfonisk enn en del av deres sjangerbrødre og synthen er inkorporet på en særdeles kløktig måte. Den utfyller også mange instrumentgrupper, deriblant piano og kirkeorgel. De er bare tre stykk i bandet, men låter som et helt orkester. Lydbildet er massivt og grandiost med mye skjulte detaljer i kulissene. Vokalen er akkurat så surklende og grotesk som man forventer, med en diksjon som er komplett umulig å dechiffrere, herlig! Som seg hør og bør er låtene rundt ti minutter og det er seks av dem, så albumet varer altså rett rundt timen. Det verserer diverse rykter om at det bare blir med denne skiva og det ville i så fall være et tap for hele Funeral Doom-scenen. Fans av Esoteric og Evoken kan handle uhørt!

Got this fistful of Doom promos from Solitude Productions, though even if I didn’t know they were all on the same label I’d have guessed, as there is a common aesthetic at work here. Doom is usually a pretty shallow pond, and it can take a fan to bother with sorting out the fine distinctions between bands. Abstract Spirit are a band from Moscow with their debut album, and I like it.
Funeral Doom is an acquired taste, and the confines of the subgenre are so narrow that bands pretty much succeed or fail based on their ability to get you to partake of the mood. Abstract Spirit are quite good at this, and there is a lot of stuff to like on this disc. I especially dig “To Kiss The Emptiness” and the haunting “Sarabanda”, but there are no bad tunes here. This is a long, slow album, and the musical ideas take a long time to develop, but they are worth the effort. Funeral Doom albums don’t really have big moments, they build and build over time, with the length of the compositions very much an intentional part of the experience, but I find myself still spinning this after a week, and there is a lot more here than it seems like on first listen. Worthy.

This funeral doom-metal trio has been active in the Russian underground since 2006. Their activities have been noticed by highly acclaimed doom-label Solitude Productions (who released Dutch doomsters Heavy Lord as well). This label is also Russian based, but lately it stands out in quality (funeral) doom releases. This is one of those releases!
The 6 songs on this disc are not your easy listening summer music. From the start the disc kicks in, it will give you shivers down your spine and brings you to cold, dark and frozen landscapes. Luckily the ideal season has just begun, because this is the ideal soundtrack for the cold winter period. I know what I will be doing, staying in with my central heating and this disc.
Musically this trio plays very slow, moody, atmospheric doom-metal, which has similarities to bands like (old) My Dying Bride, Cathedral at their Forest Of Equilibrium period and a bit of Winter. A.K.’s deep, low and dark grunt is phenomenal, which gives the music the Winter-touch. Although the music gets dull sometimes, this CD will reveal its moments if you give it a chance. The guitar-riffs are real heavy and slow and the music is filled with atmospheric keyboard sounds and occasionally with violin-effects. The production of this disc is done very well and sounds heavy but clear.
I think there is still some progression they can make in their song-writing, but if you like heavy, moody funeral doom-metal, this is a band you have to check out! Give it a chance and you won’t be disappointed.

Altro progetto russo e altro doom funereo e catacombale quello di cui sto per iniziare a parlare, per la Solitude Prod.
Se non sapete però nemmeno che cosa sia questo genere di musica, prima guardate qui poi continuate a leggere.
I nostri Abstract Spirit pur non ponendo l’originalità della propria proposta musicale in cima alle priorità (essenzialmente siamo dinnanzi ad una copia riveduta e corretta degli Shape Of Despair) fanno il loro lavoro con umiltà e risultati decisamente buoni, senza porre eccessiva enfasi su dettagli prettamente di contorno come si usa fare al giorno d’oggi.
Ovviamente le caratteristiche critiche di questo genere di musica ci sono tutte, nel bene e nel male: canzoni lunghissime, monotonia, dosi massicce di disperazione e tempi eufemisticamente definiti lenti, ma a parte questo ‘Liquid Dimensions Change’ (a proposito non pare un titolo alla Dream Theater??) si porta avanti per tutte le sue nove tracce con modestia ma fa assaporare all’intenditore dell’ottimo funeral come non se ne sentiva da molto (almeno dall’ultimo Ahab o Esoteric).

Seit Stunden grüble und grüble ich, wie bespricht man am fairsten eine Funeral Doom Metal CD? Ich glaube behaupten zu können, dass ich mich halbwegs gut in dem Genre auskenne, hab ich doch immerhin Scheiben von einigen Vertretern des Genres wie Ahab, Pantheist, Helllight und sogar eine Single von Hierophant im Regal stehen. Und eins kann ich all diesen CDs bescheinigen: Wenn man sich erst mal reingearbeitet hat und mit dem Genre an sich was anfangen kann, ja dann sind die eigentlich allesamt eine prima Sache. Ich weiß nicht genau woran es liegt, vielleicht weil die Musiker bei diesem Genre nicht gar so viel machen und dementsprechend auch nicht viel falsch machen können (sofern sie halbwegs einen gesteigerten Plan davon haben, was sie überhaupt tun, bzw. ein Instrument richtig herum halten können). Also könnte ich jetzt diese Besprechung kurz fassen und sagen “Wer Funeral Doom Metal mag, der kann halt auch die Scheibe hier kaufen”, aber dann wären nicht nur die Chefetage, Solitude Productions und vielleicht sogar die Band selbst sauer auf mich, ich würde mich auch unwohl dabei fühlen. Also wird in den sauren Apfel gebissen und versucht, etwas mehr über dieses Werk hier zu schreiben.
Das kommt aus Russland, von einer Band namens ABSTRACT SPIRIT. Anno 2006 dachten zwei Mitglieder der russischen Schwarzheimer Twilight Is Mine, dass Funeral Doom doch eigentlich eine ganz feine Sache wäre, schnappten sich fix noch den Sänger und Schlagzeuger der Landsmänner Comatose Vigil und schon war die Bandgründung beschlossens Sache. Der Dreier kam auch schnell bei Solitude Productions unter, die im Augenblick so ziemlich alles zu signen scheinen, was entweder aus Russland kommt, irgend eine Form des Doom Metals spielt oder am Besten gleich beides. Zu einer vollständigen Bandbiographie gehört aber auch ein Debutalbum und das legten die drei Russen im Januar letzten Jahres mit “Liquid Dimensions Change” auf’s Parkett. Sechs Songs, 61 Minuten Spieldauer, deshalb liebe ich Doom Metal, da ist doch Value for Money drin. Dann prüfen wir doch mal auf Herz und Nieren, ob das Ding was kann…
Was gleich von Anfang an auffällt ist der heftige Keyboardeinsatz, den ABSTRACT SPIRIT auffahren. Gut, ist jetzt nicht unbedingt was außergewöhnliches in dem Genre, aber so wie Stellarghost das Tasteninstrument benutzt, hab ich es bisher noch nicht im Bereich des Funeral Doom Metals erlebt. Manchmal schlicht und ergreifend bombastisch, manchmal etwas verstörend dissonant und meistens… hm, ich weiß gar nicht, wie ich es genau sagen soll. Abgespacet vielleicht, wenn man mir das Wort erlaubt. Ungefähr so, als hätte man das berühmt berüchtigte Thema von “Uhrwerk Orange” (übrigens grandios gecovert von Marduk, aber das nur am Rande) in den Hintergrund gepackt. Das macht schon mal einen großen Teil der Atmosphäre aus, die ABSTRACT SPIRIT hier zu bieten haben, denn die ist wirklich etwas Besonderes.
Was man vom Rest der Musik leider nun nicht so sehr sagen kann. Wenn man mal das Keyboard abzieht, dann bleibt ein Klangskelett übrig, das mich stellenweise latent an die deutschen Kollegen von Ahab erinnert. À.Ê. klingt zwar etwas heiserer als Kapitän Droste und die Riffs sind nicht ganz so walzend, aber Ähnlichkeiten sind da. Aber andererseits ist es ja auch quasi dasselbe Genre, also wieso reg ich mich auf? So viel Anlass dazu bietet die Musik von ABSTRACT SPIRIT nämlich gar nicht, während den ersten drei Tracks ist hier nämlich alles im grünen Bereich. Vor allem der Anfang von “To Kiss the Emptiness…” hat es mir extrem angetan, hier übernimmt endlich die Gitarre mal das Ruder und feiert ein sehr starkes Riff ab, das vor allem durch die Unterstützung der tiefen Keyboards und der in den Hintergrund gemischten Glocke noch an Durchschlagskraft gewinnt. Das sind die Augenblicke, die wahrlich und wahrhaftig das Prädikat “Funeral Doom” verdient haben.
Wo Licht ist, ist aber auch Schatten. Und so treten bei “Sarabanda” schon die ersten Abnutzungserscheinungen auf. Um wirklich längerfristig fesseln zu können fehlen einfach die Ideen, die Musik von ABSTRACT SPIRIT ist freilich gut, aber eben zu gleichförmig. Und deswegen kann es leicht passieren, dass die Band den Hörer so ab der 30-Minuten-Marke verliert und zu Hintergrundgedudel verkommt, was einerseits schade ist, denn ein paar sehr durchdachte Stellen gibt es noch, wie beispielsweise den Cello-Part bei “Apostasy” (der mich ein wenig an die deutschen Black/Death Metaller von Saruman erinnert), andererseits aber auch nicht so tragisch ist, denn auch als “Ambience” funktioniert “Liquid Dimensions Change” ziemlich gut.
Nach den 61 Minuten, die das Debutalbum von ABSTRACT SPIRIT dauert, bleibt bei mir ein Quentchen Ratlosigkeit zurück… Ist die Band jetzt etwas Besonderes oder nicht? Die Atmosphäre, die “Liquid Dimensions Change” vermittelt ist schon interessant und teilweise ziemlich toll, die Musik an sich aber irgendwie nichts Herausragendes. Die Scheibe macht schon durchaus Spaß, ob man sie aber unbedingt haben muss steht auf einem anderen Blatt. Den etwas wirklich weltbewegendes findet man hier nicht. Letzten Endes bleibt wohl nur zu sagen: “Wer Funeral Doom Metal mag, der kann halt auch die Scheibe hier kaufen.”

Desde las frías tierras de la madre Rusia, en concreto desde Moscú, este trío llamado Abstract Spirit, o lo que es lo mismo, el nuevo proyecto de gente de Twilight Is Mine y Comatose Vigil, edita a través de Solitude Productions su primer álbum.
No caben muchas dudas en la mente de uno sabiendo de qué bandas proceden estos señores, el sello que los está editando y que el CD contiene seis temas de una media de diez minutos de duración. Puro Funeral Doom Metal profundo y tenebroso, digno de la escena finlandesa más oscura, la de monstruos del estilo del peso de Thergothon o Skepticism, o de los holandeses Pantheist, por poner algunos ejemplos. Es bastante sorprendente la oleada de bandas Doom que están apareciendo en aquellas tierras, se está formando una auténtica escena de seguidores del estilo, y sin duda este sello está ayudando bastante para promoverlo.
En “Liquid Dimensions Change” tenemos seis temas donde la sencillez apabullante de los riffs (solamente rota por alguna melodía contada, como en el tercer tema, “Ruined”) no puede contrarrestar una atmósfera negra como el carbón, en la que cogen una importancia altísima los teclados, dignos de una ópera dedicada a la depresión más terrible, y ayudados muy de cerca por una batería que, gracias a un nivel de reverb bastante alto (especialmente en los timbales) consigue darle aún más fuerza a cualquiera de los temas.
Pero no se puede dejar de lado el peso que tiene la voz del señor À.Ê., de una profundidad tal que cualquiera creería que está grabada dentro de un pozo. Sin duda de lo más adecuada para compaginarse con el resto de la música, sin ningún tipo de variedad y haciendo que la lentitud del disco sea aún más marcada.
Cabe decir que no es un disco que sorprenda especialmente, no es un estilo que dé pie a mucha experimentación y/o variedad, pero creo que la clave de su sonido, y lo destacable de su música, lo podríamos centrar en esos teclados que he mencionado, que le dan algunos toques muy teatrales y francamente espeluznantes.
El CD viene con un buen libreto, nada de la portada doblada y ya está. Incluye las letras y un diseño muy sobrio en color azul, acorde con el nombre del grupo y el título del disco. Al que le guste el Funeral Doom no creo que le decepcionen, son un punto fácil por el que apostar.

Abstract Spirit is a Moscowian three-piece with strong ties to Russian Doom Metal bands Twilight Is Mine and Comatose Vigil. Their first official hour of material presents itself as their debut “Liquid Dimensions Change”.
The music on that debut is in the same vein of that of Comatose Vigil, although the bombastic approach makes it more reminiscent of Finish Doom Metal masters Shape Of Despair. Since there is generally little use of pace variation in Doom/Death Metal and Funeral Doom, Abstract Spirit has sought to compensate this by adding some sludgy parts to the songs. Even more so, they’ve accomplished this by varying the range of the keyboard sounds from the “standard” atmospheric sound to organs and orchestral arrangements. Although the rhythm guitars could have probably been a bit beefier, there are also frequent melodic guitar solos that provide for an excellent enrichment of the song structures. Add a strong vocal delivery to the fold and you could definitely say that “Liquid Dimensions Change” turned out to be a solid effort. Some examples of what the album has to offer can be found in ‘Ruined’, that has a great solo near the end, while ‘Apostasy’ features a few excellent riffs to carry the song, and the final stretch of the title track is great. I wouldn’t necessarily say that they’ve bombarded themselves to a scene favorite right away, but Abstract Spirit show they have enough in their sound to attract the avid fans of the genre.

A la base, simple side project du groupe Black Métal « Twilight is Mine », mené par les membres Hater (guitares/basse) et Stellarghost (synthé), ayant également officié dans le groupe de Funeral Doom « Comatose Vigil », Abstract Spirit se voit justement complété par l’actuel chanteur de ce dernier groupe pour occuper la batterie et le chant. La distribution des rôles étant faite, plongeons nous dans « Liquid Dimensions Change », le premier acte d’Abstract Spirit.
Il n’y a pas cinquante mille façons de réussir un album de Funeral Doom, et les 3 acteurs ici présents n’en étant pas à leur premier coup d’essai, vous vous doutez bien qu’ils sont au courant. Tout réside sur la capacité à créer les ambiances les plus oppressantes possibles tout en créant une espèce de néant musical dans lequel chaque note pourra sonner d’une infinie profondeur et d’une noirceur suprême… Et c’est tout à fait ce qui se passe sur ce premier album qui a un air de bande son d’après apocalypse. On se retrouve bien vite transporté dans un monde froid et rocailleux, où jamais le soleil ne se lève, où la seule eau qui coule n’est en fait qu’un poison destiné à exterminer les dernières traces de vie. Abstract Spirit nous conte musicalement le règne de la désolation, et nous invite à partager son désespoir qui une heure durant nous hypnotise. Ses compositions sont tellement prenantes et sombres que les textes ont presque l’air joyeux en comparaison. L’instrumentation est de prime abord classique, quand tout à coup surgit une guitare sèche ou un piano. La voix quand à elle gronde lentement, s’accouplant à la musique comme un instrument supplémentaire.
Les 6 compositions sont toutes aussi captivantes, et seul le synthé sur « Apostasy » m’aura un peu dérangé, surtout à la « fin » du morceau lorsqu’il repart seul, avec un son pas forcément bien choisi qui tranche un peu avec le reste. Hormis ce léger désagrément, « Liquid Dimension Change » est un album que tous les adeptes de ce genre si particulier qu’est le Funeral Doom sauront apprécier à sa juste valeur.

Abstract Spirit is een Russisch driekoppig project, bestaande uit twee leden van de blackmetalband Twilight is Mine, die ook te maken schijnen te hebben met de funeral doom band Comatose Vigil. Zanger en drummer A.K. kennen we ook van Comatose Vigil. Er gaat dus zeker een belletje der herkenning rinkelen, echter de heren hebben dit niet voor niets onder een andere naam uitgebracht. Alhoewel Abstract Spirit ook een album vol kwaliteits-funeral doom uitbrengt kunnen we niet spreken van een album wat net zo goed onder de naam van Comatose Vigil uitgebracht had kunnen worden.
Waar Comatose Vigil zich meer op het industrieel klinkende en minimalistische pad zit, gaat Abstract Spirit meer een pad op wat tussen de doomdeath funeral en de wat meer gotisch klinkende funeral ligt, met dan her en der wat sludgy aandoende gitaarwerk. Er is dus een aardige afwisseling en balans tussen zwaardere, brutere funeral en melodieuze stukken waar de toetsen meer naar voren komen. In de biografie van de band worden de namen van Shape of Despair en Colosseum genoemd, en ik kan me daar volledig bij aansluiten. Abstract Spirit pakt een breed spectrum binnen de funeral doom, en doet dat op een behoorlijk overtuigende manier!

Abstract Spirit fra Russland slapp i 2007 debut albumet Liquid Dimensjons Change. Dette er Doom metal I særklasse. Melankolsk, tungt og stemmningsfyllt. Vokalen er grovere en jeg trodde det var mulig å få det. Dette er virkelig growling av kvalitet. Slepende, tunge, spisse gitarer som hamrer i et stakkato tempo. Trommer som får deg til å tenke på troll og snødekte fjell. Dette er eventyr musikk.
Plata starter med låta From Behind The Verge, som etter min mening er en av platas beste låter. Dette er virkelig stemmingsladet, og inneholder også noen fete drone elementer. Lydbildet fører deg straks inn i en annen verden. En svart, tung og redselsfull verden. Det går på ingen måte nedover derfra. Låta Ruined bærer mer et death metal preg, noe disse gutta også behersker godt. Om jeg skulle trekke fram en ting jeg liker ekstra godt ved Abstract Spirit må det bli trommene, de skiller seg ganske kraftig ut fra lignende band jeg har hørt. De er dype og brukt med måte. Fengende rythmer er et stikkord her. De har en passende cymbal bruk. Personlig synes jeg doom metalband har lett for å drukne lydbildet med cymbaler. Man hører bare ”crasjh, crasjh” heletiden. Dette er overhodet ikke tilfellet her. Det eneste jeg har å sette fingeren på er at det til tider er overdreven synth bruk som tvinger gitarene i kne. Dette er riktig nok bare et par steder, men allikevel nok til å ødelegge den herlige opplevelsen Abstract Spirit er.
Abstract Spirit er noe av det mest depressive og melankolske jeg har hørt. Dette er en plate man har lyst til å høre på når man er nedfor og verden går imot en. Å det er akkurat det jeg skal gjøre jeg har merket meg denne plata, å ved første anledning verden prøver å knekke meg skal jeg ta den frem. Plata som en helhet framstår så sterk at det ville bli feil å skulle anbefale enkelte låter. Jeg kan ikke annet en å anbefale Abstract Spirit. Om du liker doom blir du garantert ikke skuffet

Tässäpä kirkastusta pimeneviin syysiltoihin. Kuusi kappaletta ja 62 minuuttia ovat sellainen numeropari, ettei se jätä paljoakaan epäselvyyttä Abstract Spiritin genrevalinnasta – tuomiopäivän hautajaisiinhan tässä matkataan, hitaasti mutta varmasti.
Yleensä funeral doom -opukset sävähdyttävät joko vahvoilla kappaleilla ja tiiviillä tunnelmalla tai sitten pienimuotoisilla mutta silti ovelasti esiin tunkevilla sivujuonteilla, jotka pitävät kuulijan mielenkiinnon yllä. Tämä venäläinen doom-trio on valinnut Liquid Dimensions Change -debyytilleen jälkimmäisen vaihtoehdon, ja kyseessä on onnistunut valinta: vaikka kappaleet eivät itsessään poikkea perinteisestä funeral doomista, luodaan koskettimilla ja kitaroillakin pätevää rekvisiittaa varsinaisen musiikin taakse. Parhaimmillaan tämä kuuluu Apostasyn loppuminuuteilla, jolloin vaikertavat kitarat ja musertavat rummut vaikenevat ja tunnelma nousee requiem-henkisen maalailun avulla kirkontornin tasolle. Abstract Spirit ei siis säästele dramaattisia pianonhakkauksissa tai sinfonisissa syntikkajulistuksissa vaan antaa monumentaalisten sointujen sataa lyijynä kuulijan niskaan.
Tämänsuuntaiset ratkaisut tekevätkin Liquid Dimensions Changesta paikoin huuruisen ja jopa happoisan oloista kuunneltavaa, mikä onkin hyvä kumppani väsyneesti raahautuville riffeille ja pysähtyneisyyttä lähestyvälle tempolle, joissa maistuu Thergothonin ja Skepticismin vahva perintö. Comatose Vigilistakin tutun A.K.:n matalan murea karjuntakin lähtee juuri sieltä synkkyyden syövereiden pohjamudista ja sopii näin levyn konseptiin passelisti.
Täysin ei Abstract Spirit pysty näillä elementeillä peittämään kappaleiden satunnaista ideaköyhyyttä ja suoranaista tylsyyttä, mutta kiehtovan, joskaan ei aivan originellin näkökulman funeral doomiin yhtye on luonut. Liquid Dimensions Change voi olla kuitenkin ehkä liiankin uuvuttava kuuntelukokemus, mutta sellaisenahan te doom metalinne haluatte, ettekö vain?

Imagino que si en los funerales sonara música de fondo y de ex profeso como para asustarnos y ponernos en una situación tensa (más allá del lastimoso momento que estemos viviendo), la misma tendría que ser de bandas de Funeral/Doom, no hay dudas.
ABSTRACT SPIRIT es un trío ruso (el sello es de aquel país) conformado por músicos de bandas como TWILIGHT IS MINE y COMATOSE VIGIL, también nacidas en Rusia, ciudad de AS.
El disco debut de éste proyecto se sustenta musicalmente en dicha corriente, en la cual no hay espacio para las marchas rápidas, mucho menos violentas, ni tampoco exacerbados cambios de ritmo; pues todo transcurre con una vehemencia casi explicita, terriblemente oscura.
Las canciones sobrepasan los diez minutos de duración (son seis en total) y se apoyan en ese tétrico andar que las bandas “funerarias” poseen; por lo cual, quien lea estas líneas y le dé una oportunidad al disco debe saber que esto no es para cualquiera; ni siquiera para el seguidor del Doom clásico.
En “Liquid Dimensions Change” la cosa no viene sencilla, más bien se complica (en cuanto a la escucha), ya que en dicha rama del Metal, la diversidad está ausente con aviso y la linealidad es la protagonista.
Voces de ultratumba, guitarras lánguidas y la sensación de que el funeral ya comenzó y difícilmente podamos escapar de lo abrasivo de su atmósfera…

The last few years, the Russian Metal scene has finally started to gain exposure in the western world, but most metalheads will still struggle to mention more than a few bands from any ex-Soviet states. Many might associate the country with Folk Metal groups like ARKONA, but the somber Funeral anthems of ABSTRACT SPIRIT couldn’t be further removed from sword-swinging “slava!”-schlagers.
“Liquid Dimensions Change” is a bare-boned Funeral Doom opus in the typically Finnish spirit, and particularly SHAPE OF DESPAIR could be noted as major influences. Every riff crawls along dreadfully slow, and each chord feels so loaded with grief and hopelessness, that all color seems to be sucked out of the room. It’s not terribly original, but the sheer crushing force of this melancholic panzer-wagon could send even the happiest little boozer into an early grave.
If “Liquid Dimensions Change” is any sign of things to come out of mother Russia in the future, we have some delightfully depressive times ahead of us. If you’re into Funeral Doom and thus already have one foot in the grave, this might just be the push you need. In less melodramatic terms, you would be stupid not to check out ABSTRACT SPIRIT, but be warned that side-effects might include an urge to introduce your throat to sharp things and ropes.

In copertina, realizzata in un’intensa monocromia blu, si vedono delle figure umane appena accennate intente a muoversi, a compiere delle azioni, sfumate nel colore dominante quasi fossero irreali, dei sogni ad occhi aperti fissati per un momento da una fotografia. C’и poi una grossa pietra, con alle spalle quella che sembra la sua proiezione. Il masso ha un aspetto ben piщ reale e vivo, nella sua fissitа. Il tutto и dominato da quello che sembra un sole nero.
Lo stesso blu scuro, abissale, getta una luce notturna sulle dodici facciate del libretto, contenente tutti i testi e le fotografie dei tre membri del gruppo: A.K. (voce e batteria), Hater (chitarre e basso) e Stellarghost (tastiera, cori). Le fotografie hanno un aspetto spettrale, con gli artisti che sembrano apparire trasparenti nel buio, vuoi bloccati in primo piano, vuoi fermi in corridoi. Il tutto и realizzato in maniera decisamente inquietante e convincente.
“Liquid Dimensions Change” и il primo lavoro degli Abstract Spirit, un gruppo dedito al funeral doom metal di Mosca, ora sotto contratto con la grande etichetta Solitude Prod.. La band si и formata nel 2006, dall’unione degli sforzi di musicisti provenienti da generi diversi: se infatti A.K. era giа inserito nel mondo del funeral doom grazie all’esperienza con i Comatose Vigil (giа recensiti su Shapeless), Hater e Stellarghost erano invece sulla scena da anni con il loro gruppo black metal, i Twilight Is Mine.
Come ben sappiamo, difficilmente un gruppo della Solitude si rivela un pacco. Anzi, a memoria mia non и mai successo. E infatti anche gli Abstract Spirit non deludono affatto. Piuttosto, il loro stile particolare dona ulteriore linfa ad un genere sempre di nicchia, ma che sembra prosperare come qualitа. Negli ultimi anni, infatti, e grazie soprattutto alla Solitude, mi sono trovato fra le mani dischi di gran valore. Dischi difficili, talvolta vicini alla staticitа piщ assoluta, ma ricchi di idee e forti di un fascino che non puт esaurirsi in un solo ascolto. L’ho scritto molte volte, e non ho paura di ripeterlo: il funeral doom metal и una musica piщ da vivere che da ascoltare. Se necessario, lo ripeterт ancora mille volte, nelle recensioni future. Il metal и da sempre velocitа, potenza, grinta. Il funeral doom metal censura decisamente la velocitа, ed utilizza le caratteristiche del metal per creare dei monumenti musicali, pesantissimi, tutti da contemplare. E’ come trovarsi ai piedi di una cattedrale gotica, ed amirarne i fregi, i colonnati, le volte, la struttura, i costoloni, i doccioni, le vetrate ed i rosoni. E, nell’insieme possente e severo, cercarne i particolari bizzarri, le suggestioni mistiche ed alchemiche, e le vestigia di un tempo perduto. Ecco, l’ascolto del funeral doom metal richiede questa sensibilitа, questo potere di lasciarsi trasportare con la mente, per godere dei suoni, dei timbri, dell’insieme possente e delle grandi sensazioni di desolazione che solo questo genere puт suscitare.
Gli Abstract Spirit risultano convincenti in questo loro primo lavoro. Sessantadue minuti per sei tracce: indiscutibilmente, il minutaggio dei brani и davvero consistente. Ma credetemi se vi dico che, rispetto ad altri lavori dello stesso genere, “Liquid Dimensions Change” scorre via piuttosto velocemente. Ed и un’esperienza davvero affascinante. Sм, perchи gli Abstract Spirit hanno due caratteristiche che li rendono molto interessanti. In primo luogo, la potenza esecutiva. Merito anche della qualitа di registrazione, garantita dal Primordial Studio. Ma credo sia anche una conseguenza delle scelte di arrangiamento della band, che punta molto sulla rilevanza dei bassi, e col basso stesso che viene colpito con potenza quando la mano del batterista scende con vigore sui tamburi. La batteria и davvero pestata, e non viene usata soltanto la grancassa durante il colpo in battere. Gli strumenti picchiano sul serio, sebbene con una lentezza impressionante.
La seconda caratteristica, и il lavoro delle tastiere: pomposo, decadente, eccessivo, onnipresente. Il lavoro di Stellarghost и ottimo. Le tastiere si limitano per gran parte del tempo a donare alla musica i suoi colori, a suggerire atmosfere e sensazioni. Altre volte и poi lo strumento stesso a portare la melodia. Il lavoro della tastierista и compatto con quello del gruppo, tanto che quando il resto della band tace, come nella coda finale di “Apostasy”, i suoni creati sembrano piщ squallidi e poveri.
Gli Abstract Spirit, nonostante il nome etereo, suonano una musica densa, soffocante, pesantissima. A differenza di altri gruppi simili, che ogni tanto rendono le loro sonoritа quasi impalpabili, qui i volumi sono sempre al massimo, e l’aggressione sonora и sempre in prima linea.
Le composizioni comunicano sensazioni che vanno dalla disperazione piщ cupa all’inquietudine. Non mancano particolari di derivazione orrorifica, mutuati forse dal passato black dei due ex-Twilight Is Mine. Una canzone come “From Behind The Verge” и estremamente cupa, ed evoca un orrore senza fine. “Ruined” e “Sarabanda”, la seconda dedicata ad una persona deceduta, sono invece cariche di tristezza, ma non una tristezza desolante, quanto la disperazione per ciт che si и perduto: “Se potessi vedere l’assenza di un senso / Se potessi sentire ma non ascoltare / Se potessi conoscere che la vita sia cosм vuota / Allora il sipario cadrebbe in anticipo”. E le sensazioni si susseguono anche nella disperata “To Kiss The Emptiness…”, nella giа citata “Apostasy” e nella title-track finale. “Sto in piedi davanti alla tomba nell’ombra di pena / La pioggia mescola le sue gocce con il mio dolore e le mie lacrime / Il tempo congelato si ferma, sembra che non ci sia una fine a questo giorno / L’ultimo addio, gli ultimi istanti, l’ultimo onore, l’ultima strada…”.
“Liquid Dimensions Change” и un disco davvero affascinante, quindi, capace di parlare alle anime piщ meste. Da avere, in caso vi sentiste pronti a questa esperienza. Una nuova ottima uscita per la Solitude, un’etichetta sempre piщ notevole, che non finisce mai di stupire.

Konečně jsem dostal na recenzi něco, co mi je blízké, a co budu poslouchat hodiny a hodiny s vědomím, že si to příště pustím znovu s takovým nadšením, jakoby to bylo poprvé.
ABSTRACT SPIRIT (funeral doom – Rusko) byl založený v roce 2006 po rozpadu Moskevské black metalové bandy Twillight Is Mine. Jak jsem se dočetl, tak jako blackmetalisti proráželi spíše na západě, než ve své rodné vlasti. Možná, že celkové zklamání z domácího zázemí vedlo k tomu, aby chlapci vytvořili něco tak plnohodnotného, jako je právě ABSTRACT SPIRIT. Musím pochválit skvělou atmosféru, která se z alba přímo valí. Kytarové melodie, které jsou podpořeny klávesami znějí více než tajemně a spolu s mohutným chraplákem jasně dávají najevo, kam že to tahle sebranka patří. Celkový dojem je proto výborný. První kontakt s ruskou
tvorbou v tomto stylu ve mně zanechal velmi dobré pocity. Sice je to úplně první nahrané album kapely, ale nic tomu nenasvědčuje. Zvukově je na tom kotouček velmi dobře a i co se týká skladatelského umu, všechno do sebe hezky zapadá a provází se po celou dobu poslechu.
Nezbývá než odložit Abstract Spirit a poohlédnout se po další skupině, které se doufejme přinejmenším vyrovná kvalitě již tolikrát zmiňovaných doomařů. Hodnotím za 8 a s očekáváním budu sledovat další vývoj kapely.

Imagino que si en los funerales sonara música de fondo y de ex profeso como para asustarnos y ponernos en una situación tensa (más allá del lastimoso momento que estemos viviendo), la misma tendría que ser de bandas de Funeral/Doom, no hay dudas.
ABSTRACT SPIRIT es un trío ruso (el sello es de aquel país) conformado por músicos de bandas como TWILIGHT IS MINE y COMATOSE VIGIL, también nacidas en Rusia, ciudad de AS.
El disco debut de éste proyecto se sustenta musicalmente en dicha corriente, en la cual no hay espacio para las marchas rápidas, mucho menos violentas, ni tampoco exacerbados cambios de ritmo; pues todo transcurre con una vehemencia casi explicita, terriblemente oscura.
Las canciones sobrepasan los diez minutos de duración (son seis en total) y se apoyan en ese tétrico andar que las bandas “funerarias” poseen; por lo cual, quien lea estas líneas y le dé una oportunidad al disco debe saber que esto no es para cualquiera; ni siquiera para el seguidor del Doom clásico.
En “Liquid Dimensions Change” la cosa no viene sencilla, más bien se complica (en cuanto a la escucha), ya que en dicha rama del Metal, la diversidad está ausente con aviso y la linealidad es la protagonista.
Voces de ultratumba, guitarras lánguidas y la sensación de que el funeral ya comenzó y difícilmente podamos escapar de lo abrasivo de su atmósfera…

(Doom) Metal aus den Tiefen von Mütterchen Russland gibt es in unseren Breiten nicht oft zu hören. TEARS OF MANKIND könnte man noch kennen, vielleicht noch den ein- oder anderen weiteren Vertreter, aber das flächenmäßig größte Land der Welt hat noch einen weiten, wenn nicht gar unmöglichen Weg zum Metal-Land Nummer eins bzw. zumindest in die Top 10 vor sich. Auch wenn ABSTRACT SPIRIT ein wenig eigenständiger an die Sache herangehen als die Kollegen von TEARS OF MANKIND hat man auch hier das Gefühl, andere Bands hätten zumindest schon mal ähnliche Ideen gehabt. Sehr zwiespältig ist “Liquid Dimensions Change“ aber deshalb geworden, weil die Qualitätsschwankungen vom hochklassigen Hymnus (man höre sich nur den Titeltrack an!) bis zur kakophonen Ohrenfolter (“Apostasy“ hätte man deutlich überarbeiten müssen, diese kakophonen Keyboard/Orchester-Arrangements klingen mehr als gräßlich!) so verdammt groß sind, dass fast jede Wertung von 2 bis 8 Punkten seine Berechtigung hätte.
Man merkt wohltuend, dass nicht nur die gängigen Größen des Doom einen Einfluss auf den Sound der drei Genossen/Genossinnen haben, sondern auch eine gehörige Prise der alten CELTIC FROST aus den Saiten hervorklirrt. Die Produktion ist zwar sehr mächtig, aber auch roh genug, um einen gewissen Oldschool-Charme hervorzurufen, was diesem Album verdammt gut zu Gesicht steht. Auf Dauer wirkt diese Mischung jedoch ein wenig anstrengend. So viel monoton-disharmonisches Geschrammel in Kombination mit Keyboardteppichen und infernalischen Growls sind nicht für jede Gemütslage passend und könnten auch manchmal dafür sorgen, dass die CD einmal quer durchs Zimmer fliegt bevor ein einzelner Hördurchlauf beendet wurde.
Schnöder Durchschnitt ist diese Scheibe aber niemals nie nicht! Die Klasse der Musiker manifestiert sich weniger in ausserordentlichen instrumentalen Leistungen, sondern eher in der Untergangsatmosphäre, die über weite Strecken des Albums aufkommt. Fans von extrem langsamen, kaputten, kakophonen, zerstörerischen Klängen sollten einen Lauscher riskieren, sich aber nicht danach bei mir wegen Zahn- und Ohrenschmerzen beschweren!

Some band names really make me fringe. Take Moscow’s Abstract Spirit for instance, what is it with their name? I mean, isn’t a spirit abstract anyway? You can’t touch it, you can’t see it, you can’t fuck it, therefore it has no shape and is intangible. Its existence is even questionable and sure as all hell, is difficult to understand or fathom. At least it is for me. So naming your band Abstract Spirit is kinda like naming your band something like Rounded Wheels, Hard Concrete, or Flabby Silicone. Maybe I am thinking too much about that stuff. Or maybe I am just bored. Liquid Dimensions Change is Abstract Spirit’s 2008 debut and serves up funeral doom in typical fashion. And that’s fucking boring. Unless, of course, you like eleven-minute songs formed by ultra deep guttural vocals, one beat drums, downtuned, downtempo guitars, piano and a couple of leads here and there

Il doom più funereo e pesante sembra aver trovato terreno fertile nell’underground russo, data la quantità di band uscite negli ultimi anni da quelle terre. Tra gli ultimi arrivati troviamo questi Abstract Spirit, patrocinati dalla sempre attenta Solitude Production ed autori di un platter tipicamente funeral doom. Il terzetto è composto da due membri dei black metaller Twilight Is Mine, ovverosia Stellarghost alle tastiere e Hater alla chitarra e al basso; a completare la line up troviamo la voce dei Comatose Vigil A.E.. Proprio da questi ultimi prende avvio la musica dei nostri: ci troviamo davanti a dei brani lunghi ma non particolarmente articolati, molto lenti e pesanti ma con delle digressioni verso delle melodie cupe e goticheggianti. Le tastiere giocano un ruolo importante ma non determinante e la costruzione delle varie tracce è affidata sempre alla sei corde di Hater, peraltro autore di una prova discreta ma nulla più. Stellarghost, oltre a riempire i numerosi vuoti musicali e a proporre alcune interessanti partiture gotiche, spesso e volentieri si limita a doppiare il sound della chitarra. La voce, come da copione, è cavernosa e sofferta, e riesce ad evocare scenari di solitudine e depressione in modo piuttosto convincente. Il tutto, sebbene sia formalmente perfetto, risulta però dannatamente noioso e ripetitivo e la circolarità di certi riff è ben lontana dal creare un effetto straniante simil-drone. Sembra quasi che i russi si limitino a svolgere il compitino che in questo caso sarebbe quello di riproporre in maniera adeguata una formula che gli Shape Of Despair hanno reso famosa in passato. Se proprio bisogna salvare una traccia, quella sarebbe senza dubbio “Apostasy”, se non altro per il buon finale tastieristico. La produzione è piuttosto buona, anche se non certo ottima, mentre l’artwork è di gran classe. In conclusione ci sentiamo di consigliare gli Abstract Spirit solo ai doom metal freak più oltranzisti, ben consci che nel panorama attuale per emergere ci vogliono doti ben più spiccate di quelle messe in mostra dal trio russo.

Ostatnio członkowie black metalowego, rosyjskiego tworu TWILIGHT IS MINE pokładają swoje wysiłki w zupełnie innym projekcie, który utworzyli z trochę bezrobotnym wokalistą COMATOSE VIGIL, co nie jest bez znaczenia zważywszy na ich „przebranżowienie”. W efekcie muzyka ABSTRACT SPIRIT… wciąga jak bagno, uzależnia jak narkotyk, dręczy jak nocne koszmary, a zarazem koi duszę niczym prozak. Niech nikogo nie zwiedzie „pogodna”, utrzymana w niebieściutkich kolorach okładka płyty „Liquid Dimensions Change”! Bowiem jest to rzecz klasyczna do bólu. Ależ jaki to przyjemny ból! Zawartość dźwiękowa tego krążka można zobrazować odcieniami czerni i szarości. Mrok i posępność. Pogrzebowy klimat i atmosfera tęsknoty. ABSTRACT SPIRIT kultywuje klasyczny funeral doom metal, przesiąknięty duchem SHAPE OF DESPAIR. Tak więc słuchacz naturalne może się spodziewać przytłaczającego, powolnego tempa, ponurej melodyki, ciężkich, powtarzanych, sabbatowskich riffów gitarowych oraz ukrytych w tle solówek, wisielczych w nastroju keyboardów i głębokiego, przytłaczającego wokalu. A to wszystko osnute produkcyjnym cieniem. Co prawda zespół zapędza się także w średnie tempa i wprowadza uspokajające motywy, jednak charakter albumu i tak nie ulega przez to zmianie. W twórczości ABSTRACT SPIRIT jest majestat… Partie organowe czy też niektóre fragmenty instrumentalne nawiązują wręcz do muzyki klasycznej. Chodzi tu zwłaszcza o najdłuższą, prawie 14-minutową kompozycję „Apostasy”, w której są jakby pociągnięcia na jakimś kontrabasie czy też partia fortepianowa, a w utrzymanej w innym wymiarze instrumentalnej końcówce namacalne stają się elementy improwizacji. Minuty mijają, jednak podczas słuchania „Liquid Dimensions Change” nie odczuwa się żadnego znużenia. Muzyka sama płynie… Nawet do tego ciężkiego, zachrypniętego growla, który z początku może wydać się chropowaty, ucho z czasem się przyzwyczaja. ABSTRACT SPIRIT stworzył dzieło obowiązkowe dla fanów funeral doom metalu! A są jeszcze tacy!

Med fare for å høres ut som en gammel gubbe, så står det faktisk ikke noen plass at doom må være kjedelig. Sørgelig, saktegående, tungt, massivt – gjerne. Men jeg ser ingen synonymer med kjedelig der. Abstract Spirit er et av disse utrolig gjennomførte funeral-doom-bandene, der produksjonen og lydbildet delvis høres ut som nyere Shape of Despair, mens på den musikalske fronten høres de ut som en krysning av førstnevnte og Esoteric. Greie refferanser det, om man faktisk greide å gjøre noe interessant ut av det.
Shape of Despair står for meg som en ener på grunn av det utrolig gjennomarbeidete lydbildet, der bandet framstår som en bulldozer med et symfoniorkester på lasteplanet i en velbesøkt begravelse. Den utrolig gjennomsyrete, finske melankolien greier jeg stort sett bare å spore på Shape of Despairs album, samt Swallow The Suns første. For å ta Esoteric-reffereransen, så spiller Abstract Spirit på noen av de mer surrealistiske og syre-aktige strengene, der kanskje Lovecraft-mytelogi og surrealisme er mer effekten de sikter etter enn melankoli. Dette gir meg litt den følelsen Esoteric til tider spiller på.
Likevel, om enn hvor knusende og massiv produksjon de sitter på, så er stort sett alle andre gode doom-metal-band bedre enn dette, og da er det ingen grunn til å høre på Abstract Spirit. Det er gode takter gående, men det blir rett og slett for stakatto, kjedelig og FOR bundet til disse absurde sjanger-reglene om at alt må gå i 4/4 i elefant-tempo. Maner desverre fram litt for mye «se på at vannet koker»-følelse.

Zu Beginn des Reviews zur Abwechslung mal ein Quiz: Was für eine metallische Gangart schlägt eine Band wohl ein, wenn man im tristen Russland seinem Dasein frönt? Na? Genau, Doom Metal. Gut, ABSTRACT SPIRIT kommen nun nicht gerade aus der hintersten Ecke der kargen sibirischen Tundra, dennoch versucht man sich auf der ersten Scheibe „Liquid Dimensions Change“ an den depressiven Klängen des Funeral Dooms.
Bis auf die Produktion ist das Ganze allerdings eher semi-gelungen. Diese hat es dennoch in sich. Unglaublich kraftvoll abgemischte Gitarren und ein Schlagzeugsound, der die Wände erzittern lässt, wie eine ausgefallene Heizung die Russen.
Oppositionell dazu verhält sich dann allerdings das, was ABSTRACT SPIRIT aus dieser wirklich guten Grundlage gemacht haben: ein höhepunktfreies und dahinplätscherndes, fast unterdurchschnittliches Doom Album, welches wohl nur beim wirklichen Die-Hard-Kern der Gemeinde Anklang finden wird und kann.
An und für sich sind die Riffings wirklich sehr geil arrangiert, unglaublich drückend und depressiv, allerdings wird das ganze Gesamtbild durch die mehr als nervigen Keyboards und den monotonen Grunzgesang komplett zerstört. In diesem Moment wünsche ich mir „Liquid Dimensions Change“ komplett instrumental eingespielt und vor allem ohne die nervigen Keys.Eine wirkliche Kaufempfehlung kann ich an diesem Punkt nicht aussprechen, denn bis auf den Titelsong sind alle Songs der mehr als einständigen Scheibe durch die vermasselte gesangliche und keyboardtechnische Leistung auf einem mehr als durchschnittlichem Niveau. Dass Potential da ist, zeigen allerdings die Produktion und vor allem die Gitarren- und Schlagzeugarbeit. Vielleicht kann man ja beim Zweitling eine Überraschung erwarten.

Russischer Funeral Doom / Death Metal ist nicht unbedingt der populärste Vertreter in unseren Breitengraden. Das 2006 gegründete Moskauer Trio ABSTRACT SPIRIT gehört aber zu eben jenen Bands, “Liquid Dimensions Change“ heißt ihr Debüt. Das ist schon seit geraumer Zeit via Solitude Productions zu beziehen, aber hat erst jetzt -pünktlich zur tristen Jahreszeit – den Weg auf meinen Schreibtisch gefunden.
Solitude Productions schaffen es, die geneigte Fan Gemeinde regelmäßig mit herausragenden Veröffentlichungen zu verwöhnen – so auch hier…?
Herausragend ist zumindest die Produktion. Hier hat man Nägel mit Köpfen gemacht. In ein Bombastisches Soundgewand verpackt kommen die sechs überlangen Kompositionen sehr atmosphärisch und düster daher. Diesen Standard können die Songs dann aber zu keiner Zeit halten (abgesehen vom wirklich guten Titeltrack). Deren Arrangement ist ein einziger lauwarmer Aufguss von schon zig Fach gehörtem. Man bedient sich fleißig bei den Großen der Szene, ohne allerdings eigene Impulse und Ideen in die Songs einzubringen. Der Sänger Growlt sich tief und monoton vor sich hin, die Musiker verfallen in der Folge in ähnlich lethargische Gemütszustände. Bevor der Hörer aber ebenfalls in diese absonderlichen Weltuntergangssphäre eintauchen kann, wird er zur Gesunderhaltung lieber mit absolut grausamen Keyboardklängen in die Realität zurückbeordert. Diese Keyboardsounds penetrieren die Schmerzempfindung im Ohr auf äußerste, und wollen sich überhaupt nicht in restliche Musik einfügen. Besonders grausam wird der Trip immer dann, wenn die Keys die absolute Dominanz in der Musik übernehmen….
So kämpft man sich Song für Song durch ein Höhepunktleeres Album. Man hofft eigentlich die komplette Spielzeit über, dass sich irgendwann ein Aha-Effekt einstellt, oder irgendeine interessante Wendung in der Musik die Tristesse bereichert, aber nichts Derartiges passiert. Den Höhepunkt haben sich ABSTRACT SPIRIT dann wohl in Form eines kompletten Songs für den Schluß aufbewahrt:
Hat man sich nämlich tapfer durch das Album gekämpft, wird man mit dem guten Titeltrack ein wenig entschädigt. Bis dahin ist es aber ein (zu) langer, (zu) steiniger Weg…

Fazit:
ABSTARACT SPIRITS Debüt „Liquid Dimensions Change“ braucht wohl niemand wirklich, und kann auch niemanden zur Anschaffung empfohlen werden. Das die Band eigentlich in der Lage ist, gute Songs zu schreiben beweist der Titeltrack. Die restlichen fünf Tracks sind überflüssig und belanglos.

How prescient that the Russian doom mongers would write an album concerning the ongoing debate about how British wine measures in pubs have gone up from an average 150ml to 175ml for the same price. I really did think that this was a sterling commentary about the ….oh….hang on. Nope, my mistake. Turns out this isn’t a concept album around reform of the archaic British licensing laws after all, but a heavier-than-Crowbar-wearing-lead-boots Moscovian funeral doom outfit out to destroy all but the most insane party spirits.
“There ain’t no party / Like an S club party” sang manufactured pop / paedophiles wet
dream S club 7, yet one suspects that even an “S club party” would soon resemble the aftermath of the Jonestown massacre if Abstract Spirit were allowed to put this miserable platter on the boom box. Abstract Spirit feature some of the band Comatose Vigil (www.live4metal.com/reviews-505.htm), so it may not be a great surprise to learn that once again Abstract Spirit play insanely slow dirges filled with pain, loss and horror. There is a palpable air of black metal in the mix with the great washes of keyboard sounds and the vocals, which bring to mind “Passage” era Samael in their rough but decipherable glory. The guitars are endlessly downtuned funeral tolls, the drums the beat to an expiring life, the lower than snake shit vocals the sound of depression personified.
It’s not going to set the world aflame any time soon, but if you want to put on music to either a) piss off your neighbours or b) slit your wrists to, Abstract Spirit are just the band to oblige. If this was the “on hold” music for the Samaritans, I reckon there would be a lot more work for our plucky undertaking industry. Miserable? Hell yeah. Essential? Not quite, but good…erm….fun (?) nether the less. Pick it up if you see it.

После выхода альбома “Not A Gleam Of Hope” (2005) и EP “Narcosis” (2006) московская команда COMATOSE VIGIL стала, пожалуй, самой известной funeral doom metal командой России. Поэтому все новые релизы COMATOSE VIGIL, а также сайд-проекты их музыкантов, ожидаются любителями похоронного метала с замиранием их черных сердец. К последней категории относится дебютный диск команды ABSTRACT SPIRIT “Liquid Dimensions Change”, выпущенный Solitude Prod. Потому как все три участника команды, так или иначе, имели отношение к Коматозникам. История группы началась с того, что музыканты блэк-металической формации TWILIGHT IN MINE Hater и Stellarghost решили замутить фьюнерал-думовый проект, поименованный ими ABSTRACT SPIRIT. Не иначе как ради стажировки оба музыканта в том же 2006 году оказались в концертном составе COMATOSE VIGIL, правда, задержались в нем недолго. И весь 2007 год они посвятили записи диска. К ним же примкнул вокалист Коматозов A.K., который также выполнил на альбоме функции драмера. Результат двухлетнего существования выражен в шести композициях общей длительностью в час. Вообще говоря, “Liquid Dimensions Change” является не чистой воды funeral doom metal’ом, а разумным компромиссом между замогильным звуком и мелодичностью дума. В атмосфере, создаваемой этим альбомом, атмосфере увядания, загустения жизни во времени, как в янтаре, есть удивительная красота. Мощный гроул, как голос неизбежности, каждая нота как деталь сложнейшего ритуала. Гитары создают густой жирный звук, пустоты которого профессионально заполняются клавишами. Каждое мгновение жизни застревает в памяти недвижимой картинкой. Этот альбом обволакивает слушателя дурманящими образами покоя уходящей в небытие бездны…
