Дебютная работа украинской группы Somnolent! Полноформатный альбом стал плодом длительной работы группы, принимавшей участие в различных музыкальных фестивалях и своими силами выпустившей в 2007 году концертный альбом “Live In Odessa”.
Somnolent предлагает слушателю путешествие в сумрачный мир funeral doom death, сплетённый из вязких рифов и протяжных партий соло-гитары. Это путь через боль и отчаяние, длинною в час – почти столько длится “Monochromes Philosophy”.

Ismét egy kellőképp borongós hangulatú doom lemez került a kezembe, ezúttal az ukrán Somnolent zenekar Monochromes Philosophy című anyaga. Ez a banda első nagylemeze, ezt megelőzően egy split CD-n voltak hallhatóak a Krobak zenekarral megosztva. Nekem ez a legelső találkozásom velük, s ismervén már pár doom anyagot, nagy várakozással tettem be a korongot lejátszómba. Az album 4 tételre oszlik, egyenként legalább 10 percnyi játékidővel. Kiadójuk szerint funeral doom-ot játszanak, s valóban, találó e kifejezés. Talán túlságosan is.
Az első nóta szomorkás tengerzúgással kezdődik, majd kezdetét veszi a lassan hömpölygő, monoton, kellőképp depressziós hangulatú zenefolyam, mely innentől fogva egészen az utolsó tétel legvégéig szinte ugyanazzal a dallammal festi elénk egy esős időben, éjfélkor lezajló temetés hangulatát, a legfeketébb feketébe öltözött gyászmenetet. Ez a lemez nem a változatosságról híres, s bár zeneileg színvonalas, számomra túlságosan is monoton, egyhangú ahhoz, hogy borongós napokon egyre-másra ezt hallgassam. Bemutatkozó nagylemeznek azonban kifejezetten minőségi munka, és biztos vagyok benne, hogy a célközönségnek tetszeni fog.
Ha egy kicsit is változatosabb lenne, bizakodóbban tekintenék rájuk, még ha konkrétan temetésre is szól a dal (ahhoz viszont tökéletes), szerintem egy-két változatosabb dallamot, hangulatot így is elbírt volna ez a korong. Az énekhang terén sem történik túl sok izgalmas dolog, egy idő után unalmassá válik, s ha a hallgató még nem öltött eddig feketét a temetésre, akkor biztosan elalszik e lemez hallgatása közben. Ajánlható lenne még depressziósoknak, hogy ezeket a dalokat hallgatva, csendben sírják álomba magukat egy hideg, ködös éjszakán. Én azonban inkább változatosan szeretek szomorkodni, s ehhez nagy valószínűséggel nem az ukránok albumát fogom preferálni.

ENGLISH VERSION:
Again I got another depressive doom album, this time by the Ukrainian band Somnolent, Monochromes Philosophy. This is the band’s first full-lenght album, but they could be heard before on a split CD with Krobak. This was my first meeting with this band and as I’ve known some doom materials before, I had expections. There are 4 songs on the album, at least 10 minutes long each. Their label say it’s funeral doom metal and indeed, this is the right describtion. Maybe too right.
The first songs starts with sad seawaves sound, and from this moment, the slow flowing, monotone, depressive music mass begins until the end of the last song, with almost all the same melody, like if it was a funeral in rain at midnight, with everyone dressed in black. This CD isn’t famous for being various, yet musically it’s quite good, but for me it’s too monotone, too much to make me want to listen it on grey days. Still, it’s a quality material for a first album and I’m sure that funeral doom fans will like it.
If it was just a little bit more various, I’d have more trust in this band, even if it’s for a funeral really (it’s actually perfect for that), in my opinion there could have been more of various melodies and moments. There aren’t much of changes in the vocals either, it gets boring after a while and if the listeners aren’t yet dressed in black for the funeral, then they’ll definietly fall asleep while listenning to the album. It could be recommended for depressed people to listen to the songs while falling asleep in tears at a cold, misty night. But personally, I prefer to be sad in various ways, so I’d most likely not choose the album of the Ukrainians for that.

Incredibilmente pure.
Il classico disco monolite impossibile da digerire anche da chi ha lo stomaco foderato di amianto. Cinque pezzi dei quali quattro di un quarto d’ora abbondante e l’altro di sette minuti e passa (strumentale).
Lentezza catacombale, riff trascinati spasmodicamente che in fase di assolo si rifanno agli episodi migliori dei fratelli Cavanagh, l’intero disco presenta una sola accelerazione! (l’ultimo minuto di “Paradoxes Of The Universe” fra l’altro al limite del grind).
Thergothon nell’animo (ma chi, nell’ambito del funeral doom, non vede i finlandesi come maestri?) questo gruppo ucraino di Odessa presenta una grande maestria nel torturare il cervello dell’ascoltatore con fraseggi ipnotici e cantilenanti senza fine, al limite della sopportazione umana, elevando il concetto stesso di funeral doom a prova fisica da superare.
Eccezionale prova fisica di sopportazione umana: pensate di ritenervi all’altezza?

Słuchając debiutanckiej płyty „Monochromes Philosophy” młodego, ukraińskiego zespołu SOMNALENT można sobie strzelić w łeb, z dubeltówki… Jest na to dużo czasu – 58 minut podzielonych zaledwie na cztery kompozycje. Jak można trafnie zgadywać, grupa ta nie wykonuje grindcore`a ani radiowych hitów. Generuje rozległy w formie funeralowy doom metal. Wolny jak żółw, ciężki jak hipopotam, niezgrabny jak słoń w składzie porcelany:-)… Destrukcyjny jak buldożer… No tak, niestety album „Monochromes Philosophy” jest zbyt rozciągnięty, za dużo na nim powtarzalności i wtórności, by mógł przez godzinę utrzymać zaciekawienie odbiorcy. Jednostajne tempa, prosta konstrukcja utworów, aranżacje bez szaleństwa – taką surową wersję doom metalu proponuje SOMNALENT (z bardzo odległymi echami MY DYING BRIDE). Z jednej strony kapela wykorzystuje czyste brzmienia gitary, a z drugiej bardziej przybrudzone, na odległy wzór blackowych (poza tym sugerujące jest mocne przyśpieszenie pod koniec „Paradoxes Of The Universe”). Na „Monochromes Philosophy” ostatni track „Imperceptible Noise Of Moribund Impressions” jest instrumentalny, a we wcześniejszych jest obecny ociężały, przytłaczający, grobowy growl, a także jakieś niewyraźne szepty, tudzież inny głos „zmęczony”, mówiący ostatnim tchem lub ewentualnie zwyrodniały scream. Oczywiście klimat muzyki jest iście dołujący, potrafi doszczętnie sponiewierać słabą duszę (czyt. katolikiem:-)). Poza tym na płycie gdzieniegdzie szumi morze i deszcz. Jednak tak naprawdę twórczość SOMNALENT budzi ambiwalentne odczucia. Ma swój urok (zwłaszcza jeśli ktoś lubi takie smuty), ale słychać jeszcze także pewne dyletanctwo. Rytmika i melodyka utworów do pewnego stopnia jest płynna, ale też zdarzają się na „Monochromes Philosophy” fragmenty dysharmoniczne, „rozedrgane”. Poziom więc jest taki sobie, a i nuda chwilami wydziera z tego krążka…

I Somnolent si sono formati in Ucraina nel 2006, e si sono dedicati sin dall’inizio ad esplorare quel genere affascinante e misterioso definito funeral doom metal. Il gruppo ha esordito su demo nel 2007, con il “Live In Odessa”. Questo lavoro di quattro tracce ha convinto la ben nota etichetta Solitude, che ha deciso di produrne il disco d’esordio, intitolato “Monochromes Philosophy”. La copertina, monocromatica (ovviamente!) e scura, raffigura delle onde che si infrangono contro degli scogli giganteschi. Nelle otto pagine del libretto, completo dei testi e di tutte le informazioni, continuano ad essere presenti come sfondo immagini di acqua e di rocce. Una nota in calce recita: “…Quando sai tutto, nessuna cosa и conosciuta”.
Stando alle informazioni contenute nel libretto, “Monochromes Philosophy” и stato registrato dal dicembre del 2007 al maggio del 2008, presso gli studi QS&BA di Odessa. La formazione che ha inciso il CD vede Alexey alla voce, Konstantin alla chitarra solista ed agli effetti sonori, Nikolay all’altra chitarra, Yuriy alla batteria e Eugeniy al basso. Si tratta di musicisti di valore, ricchi di esperienza, che hanno suonato o suonano ancora attualmente anche in altri gruppi: Sauroctonos, My Personal Murderer, Kaotisk, Antarex, Anhedonia, Vtoroe Dyhanie, Trona e Konqvering.
Attualmente, Eugeniy ha lasciato la band ed al suo posto и arrivato Alexandr. Lo stile del gruppo ha subito anche dei cambianti, и gli stessi Somnolent ammettono che il funeral doom metal ha lasciato il posto ad un doom piщ sperimentale. Nel frattempo, una nuova canzone и apparsa in uno split con i Krobak, pubblicato nel 2009.
Ma non andiamo troppo avanti con gli eventi. Il disco da recensire, infatti, rappresenta la sublimazione della prima fase artistica dei Somnolent. In questo disco, il quintetto ucraino propone senz’ombra di dubbio un funeral doom metal in linea con i canoni del genere. “Monochromes Philosophy” chiude una prima fase artistica nel migliore dei modi, ma che и comunque una parte innegabile del modo di intendere la musica da parte dei Somnolent.
I numeri parlano da soli: 58 minuti di musica rappresentati da sole quattro composizioni. Tre canzoni ed uno strumentale. E si intenda pure il termine canzone nella sua accezione piщ vaga ed imprecisa. Infatti la musica dei Somnolent и ricca di quadri sonori diversi e mutevoli, capaci di sorprendere qualunque ascoltatore realmente interessato. Perchи la veritа и questa. Il funeral doom metal, l’ho scritto miliardi di volte, non и un genere per tutti. E’ un genere che chiama a sи i suoi appassionati. Chiunque interpreti il metal nel modo piщ tradizionale, fatto di grinta e velocitа, sicuramente finirebbe con l’addormentarsi ascoltando il disco dei Somnolent, giudicandoli tali di nome e di fatto. Invece, l’appassionato di funeral doom non cerca la velocitа, assolutamente: gode della tortura di ritmi lentissimi ed infiniti, di cambiamenti minimali ma costanti, di paesaggi sonori creati da tanti timbri e melodie interminabili, avvolgenti e soffocanti al tempo stesso. E’ un dolce masochismo, quello che spinge l’ascoltatore a dedicarsi al funeral doom. E i Somnolent sono interpreti capaci ed ispirati di questo genere. Si sente, ascoltando piщ volte “Monochromes Philosophy”, che i ragazzi abbiano una vera attitudine a questo genere. La melodie ispirano sentimenti di malinconia profondi, che ben si adattano ai testi deprimenti. Testi ben fatti, in inglese, stampati sgrammaticati sul libretto ma corretti nella pronuncia, abbastanza in linea col genere. Ogni tanto, nella normalitа risalta qualche passaggio particolarmente interessante, come questo ad esempio: “Occhi chiusi… occhi aperti / C’и qualche differenza? / Apro i miei occhi, e vedo / l’oscuritа dei pensieri / la crudeltа dei cuori / la piattezza dell’arte. / Chiude i miei occhi, e vedo / il nulla…”. Questa frase и tratta dalla title-track, che tratta di tutto ciт che и sempre uguale, che ripete sempre sи stesso. Insomma, gli esempi pratici nell’esperienza di tutti noi si sprecherebbero. E la musica accompagna il tutto con le sue bordate metalliche, le cadenze opprimenti, e tanti effetti sonori. Lo scrosciare della pioggia и quello che si ripete piщ di frequente.
La musica presenta anche alcuni passaggi sinistri, e sorprende l’accelerazione bruciante e devastante che conclude “Paradoxes Of The Universe”, terzo brano in scaletta. E’ infatti paradossale che un gruppo cosм severo e rigoroso, abbandoni di colpo tutti i canoni dello stile per penetrare in territori cosм veloci ed estranei. Per poi tornare ad un porto sicuro con lo strumentale conclusivo “Imperceptible Noise Of Moribound Impressions”.
La lista delle tracce comprende anche l’openere, mai citata fino ad ora, “Unrequited Love For Reverie”.
Sicuramente i Somnolent sono un gruppo convinto e convincente. “Monochromes Philosophy” и un bel CD, ricco di belle intuizioni anche se legatissimo allo standard del genere. Poi, ormai si sa: un gruppo legato alla Solitude non puт essere scarso. E i Somnolent non lo sono di certo, anzi, la loro dichiarata evoluzione и segno di una mentalitа creativa, alla ricerca di nuove formule espressive personali e, perchи no, magari anche per il genere stesso.
Visitate il sito della band per ascoltare qualche stralcio delle loro composizioni, sia nuove che vecchie.

Cuatro temas, una hora de música, y la banda llamándose Somnolent. Grind es obvio que no va a ser. Si señores, aquí tenemos una nueva banda del género más lento y depresivo de la escena metálica. Un nuevo grupo eslavo que se adentra en este género. En este caso cinco músicos de diversos estilos lejanos al Doom y llegados desde Ucrania han decidido adentrarse en el abismo.
Primer álbum editado de la banda con un diseño bastante cutre, no hay que confundir sobrío o frío con esto, aunque lo peor sea sin duda alguna el logo… pero bueno adentrémonos en lo musical. Somnolent es una banda más, dentro del Doom más funerario, intenta aportar alguna novedad pero es ciertamente escaso el frescor que trasciende en este trabajo, más bien han seguido paso a paso el manual previsto para poder crear un disco de Funeral Doom, si bien es cierto que hay momentos a destacar en este álbum. Principalmente instantes del segundo y tercer tema. Vamos que estos cinco chicos proponen un Funeral repleto de guitarras viscosas y punteos alargados, notas eternas y tempo monotamente pesado, algo muy acorde con el estilo y que no lo hayas oído antes, eso si con buena composicion y ejecución. Crean un ambiente en el que cualquier seguidor de estos sonidos podrá adentrarse fácilmente. Un universo de un sólo color (no sé cómo se me ha ocurrido esto viendo el título del disco) donde la desesperación y el dolor eterno es la sensación que pretender crear.
No es el disco de Funeral de la década, ni del año, ni del semestre, pero cumple con todo lo fundamental para poder ser asimilado con esa negra dulzura que desprende la música tediosa, áspera y fría de este género.
Realmente el estilo empieza a pedir a gritos frescura y de momento Somnolent no aporta la necesaria, pese que en algún instante aparezcan pinceladas ciertamente ”originales”. Que sigan por ahí, ya que por el otro trayecto convencional hay un atasco de narices.

Missä vaiheessa funeral doom sammaloitui? Missä onkaan se uskallus ja heittäytymisen meininki, joka on osaltaan aikanaan tehnyt hyvistä funeral doom -bändeistä tämän päivän funeral doom -legendoja? Vaikken ollutkaan 90-luvun puolivälissä vielä tuoreeltaan vastaanottamassa genren sellaisia klassikkobändejä kuin vaikkapa Unholy, Skepticism, Anathema tai Esoteric, on bändien tärkeimpien tuotosten veto- ja alkuvoimaisuus kantanut pitkälle uuden vuosituhannen puolelle.
Jotain on siis pakko olla vialla, kun bändi vuonna 2009 väittää soittavansa avantgardea funeral doomia ja kuulostaa lähinnä kolkolta, tylsältä ja ennen kaikkea ennalta-arvattavalta. Jos ovat yllä mainittujenkin yhtyeiden tuotokset ailahdelleet tai niiden tyyli vaihdellut, niin toisin kuin ukrainalaisen Somnolentin debyytti, eivät ne oikeastaan ikinä ole olleet perusvarmoja tai kaavamaisia.
Monochromes Philosophy on oiva nimi levylle, joka on harmillisen yksivärinen ja -ulotteinen. Samaa saattoi toisaalta sanoa vaikkapa suomalaisen Shape of Despairin ensilevystä, joskin helsinkiläisbändin Shades of… -debyytti osoittautui lopulta ehdottomuudessaan jopa vakuuttavaksi levyksi. Kieltämättä jylhää, joskin lopussa hieman laiskistuvaa ja punaisen langan kadottavaa nimibiisiä lukuun ottamatta Monochromes Philosophysta jäävät mieleen sen hitauden ohella vain todennäköisesti tahallisen epävireiset kitaraliidit, jotka eivät kuitenkaan yleisesti ottaen kohenna albumista saatavaa kokonaiskuvaa.
Myös nimibiisissä jonkinlaiset sooloräpellykset viheltävät paikoin melkoisen pahasti nuotin vieressä. Toisaalta osa päätösraita Imperceptible Noise Of Moribund Impressionsin samanhenkisistä liideistä menee jo sen verran häiritsevästi kieroon, että ne alkavat muuttua mielenkiintoisiksi. Paradoxes Of The Universessa bändi tavoittaa puolestaan osia siitä samasta ehdottomuudesta, jota Dolorian kahdella ensimmäisellä levyllään henki. Biisin epäilemättä yllätykselliseksi tarkoitettu death metal -lopetus kuitenkin vesittää tätä vaikutelmaa. Toimivimmillaankin Somnolent on kuitenkin lähinnä keskivertoista ja tavanomaista tavaraa. Kaavamaisuutta lukuun ottamatta bändi ei kuitenkaan kärsi mainittavista lastentaudeista, joten kenties tulevaisuuden suhteen on vielä toivoa. Lisää kieroutta peliin vaan!

Funeral doom blijft hip in Rusland. Ook Somnolent waagt zich aan het feest van de donkere traagheid die funeral doom hoort te zijn. De band slaagt hier slechts ten delen in.
An sich is het best leuke funeral doom, alleen erger ik mij mateloos aan de leadgitaar, de man die de snaren op dit instrument beroert, is er in geslaagd om zijn snaren dermate net vals te stemmen dat het voor mij eigenlijk het hele album verziekt. Irritant ielig hoge loopjes over de lage basislaag, Met name de eerste track wordt op deze manier compleet verziekt, het doet gewoon pijn aan je oren, maar helaas, de latere nummers blijven ook niet compleet verschoond van deze trommelvliesvervuiling.
In de latere nummers laat de band overigens wel meer en meer horen toch wel een wat eigenzinnige blik te hebben, de ritmes worden wat complexer en het klinkt allemaal net wat eigenzinniger. Jammer genoeg blijft het ondermaatse gitaarspel. Tip: dump de gitarist en zoek iemand die wel weet waar die snaren voor zijn, dan kan het nog wel eens wat worden.

Denne ukrainske kvartetten gjør mye bra på sin debut for russiske Solitude Production og av den grunn skal jeg ikke dvele altfor mye ved de negative tingene. De er nykommere innen Funeral Doom Metal-sjangeren, men sper på med litt sporadisk renvokal og gotiske toner. Komposisjonene varer i gjennomsnitt over 14 minutter og det er fire av dem. Variasjonen mellom dem er i grunn ganske bra og de blander ulike teknikker på en god måte. Tempoet er selvfølgelig seigt som pokker, men de opererer innenfor området Largo-Andante, et fint spenn som gir nok kontrast til å holde sånn tålig på interessen. Da ser jeg selvsagt bort fra unntaket hvor de kjører på med tilnærmet Death Metal i sistelåta, for øvrig en malplassert idé og dårlig gjennomført (dette er en av de negative tingene ved skiva). Leadgitaren er også malplassert, både når det gjelder melodi, intonering og plassering i lydbildet. Faktisk ville de sittet igjen med et langt bedre produkt hvis de bare hadde kuttet ut dette instrumentet. Produksjonen er også et ankepunkt, sjøl om den ikke trekker så veldig mye ned. Hvis de ordner opp i disse tingene til neste gang, kan det bli et vanvittig bra album!

Funeral Doom is not hard to do, but it is so hard to do well. If your atmosphere is not compelling, if your melodies are not powerful, then your music is just slow and boring to no purpose. Somnolent try hard, aping every genre convention with diligence and devotion, but they are not able to inject much fire into their music. The sound is pretty good, but the compositions go nowhere, and the atmosphere you are hoping for never materializes in any way that attracts attention. If Funeral Doom has a ‘middle of the road’, then this would be it, but in a subgenre as extreme as this, that is no compliment at all. Not terrible, but not moving or involving in any way.

Die Ukrainer Somnolent sind eine recht junge Band, erst seit 2006 firmiert man unter diesem Banner in der Szene. Daher verwundert es schon ein wenig, das man bereits jetzt einen Deal beim russischen Label Solitude Productions an Land ziehen konnte. Das hier vorliegende „Monochromes Philosophy“ ist also in jeder Hinsicht ein Debütwerk.
Musikalisch tummeln sich Somnolent wie so viele Bands aus den Gebieten der ehemaligen Sowjetunion im dunkeln Fahrwasser des Funeral Dooms. Mit Lava artiger Langsamkeit kriechen die morbiden Klangbilder aus den Boxen und verbreiten eine ziemlich düstere Stimmung. Suizid gefährdete Personen sollten um „Monochromes Philosophy“ vielleicht einen Bogen machen…
Die Gitarren zersägen mit hohen Tönen die Schwermut und kreieren einen deutlichen Kontrast zur restlichen Musik..Somnolent schaffen es sehr gut ihre Musik mit Atmosphärischen Klangcollagen zu veredeln, die die dunkle Grundstimmung sehr gut transportieren. Der kräftige, unheilvolle Growlgesang fügt sich nahtlos ins Gesamtbild ein. In diesen Momenten ist das Album wirklich ein empfehlenswertes Stück Funeral Doom. Aber leider überspannen die Ukrainer bei ihren überlangen Kompositionen auch allzu gerne den Bogen der Eintönigkeit und verlieren sich dann in Nichtssagender öder Monotonie. In diesen Momenten zeigt sich das Somnolent eine junge Band sind, die das nötige Gefühl für stilvolles Songwriting erst noch mühsam erlernen muss. Dies ist das größte Manko von „Monochromes Philosophy“, das es dem Hörer in diesen Momenten wahrlich nicht leicht macht den Finger von der ’Open/Close’ Taste seines CD Players zu lassen.
Anspieltipps: Paradoxes Of The Universe
Fazit:
„Monochromes Philosophy“ ist ein über weite Strecken zu Monotones Werk geworden, als das es sich aus der breiten Masse der Veröffentlichungen positiv abheben würde. Auch wenn gute Ansätze durchaus zu vernehmen sind.
Zielgruppe sind ganz klar Fans des Funeral Doom, die mit Growlgesang etwas anfangen können. Aber auch denen dürfte es schwer fallen in vollem Umfang Zugang zu „Monochromes Philosophy“ zu finden. Auf jeden erst Fall reinhören!

Light thirteen white candles and bring out your dead, the bells are tolling for a full hour of funeral laments. The entertainment of this despondent evening comes courtesy of the Ukranian five-piece SOMNOLENT, who will make sure you have a miserable and disheartening time. Be sure to try our selection of bitter wine, and you’re set for a real depressing all-nighter.
Four songs clocking in at an hour gives you an idea of the long-winded snail-paced doom you are about to receive, and of course the menu is looking sufficiently bleak and colorless. The opening track “Unrequited Love To Reverie” is the archetypal Funeral Doom song, featuring droning menacing bass, a mix of cookie-monster- and clean MY DYING BRIDE-style vocals, and mournful guitars. However, the lead guitar is absolutely atrociously tuned, sounding sour enough to make even the most hardened sound-engineer cringe. Of course, with such a lousy sound, the otherwise perfectly acceptable atmosphere goes down the toilet, replacing what could have been staggeringly melancholic with headsplitting annoyance.
Thankfully, the lead guitar is featured less prominently in the subsequent tracks, which still find themselves placed quite safely within the confines of their niche. The heavily painted gloom and doom almost reaches the realm of self-parody at times (sounds of rainfall in every song, anyone?), and clean vocals performed in thick accents are hard not to crack a smile at. Smiling at a Funeral Doom album is hardly a good sign, but I guess it’s unreasonable to expect a Ukranian band to get the pronunciation perfectly right. It’s more troubling that the music is stale and tasteless, bringing absolutely nothing new to the palette of gray shades.
As the ideas are all washed out to a bland mush, and since the lead guitar keeps rearing its horrible head from time to time, it’s safe to say that “Monochromes Philosophy” won’t make any significant impact. There are some adequately somber moments, but as a whole the album is the musical equivalent of a stranded whale – it’s not going anywhere. Anyone in search of brilliant Funeral Doom should look towards ESOTERIC’s newest output instead, this one should rightly be filed under “sub-par”.

The album opens with an atmospheric intro with falling rain and subtle background music. After a while one of the guitar players kicks in with a high lead guitar-riff that lasts throughout the whole song. Normally no problem, but somehow this guy doesn’t know how to tune his instrument! Shit, he totally fucks up the song with utter false sounding guitar licks! It sounds so terrible that I really had troubles to ride this song out!
Unfortunately it doesn’t get a whole much better. The second song, ‘Monochromes Philosophy’, is a pretty decent slow, funeral doom song, but it all sounds a bit too weak and unoriginal. From the low growling grunt, till the song structures and the weak guitar sound. Luckily the false high guitar-riffs are left away in this song, which makes it a listenable song. The other two songs are from the same caliber. Decent doom songs, but they don’t stand out in any kind of way. Fun thing is that all the songs open up with falling rain intros! Oh, and in the last song we have the terrible, false sounding guitar licks again! They definitely raise some hairs on your body, but it’s the wrong kind of hair that they raise.
Somnolent has some references to a band like My Dying Bride, but they are miles away from the quality of this band. This album sounds to me a bit like a band that got a bit too early in a studio recording an album. I hear what they are trying to do, but it’s fucked up by the guitar-player and the lousy song writing. Drop the guitar-player and focus on writing some decent tunes and it might get enjoyable!

The sunshine outside is burning brightly and summer is well upon us, thus making the miserable world of funeral doom metal seem at utterly pointless genre to all but the bleakest of metalheads at this time of year. Somnolent’s debut album did thankfully come out last winter but listening to it again now is a very difficult experience. With four unmeasurably morose songs clocking in at 59 minutes, Somnolent will already be cutting their potential audience base right down to the bare bones with a cursory listen to their Mournful Congregation and Esoteric angled take on the genre, but it is safe to say further listens will narrow down that field even further. Save for one minute at the end of
‘Paradoxes Of The Universe’, the beat rumbles on at what could be best described as the ‘standard’ pace for the genre, never doing much in it’s attempts to drive you into despair. Despair is gleefully achieved however with a lead guitar tone, primarily found in ‘Unrequited Love To Reverie’, that is so out of tune one wonders how it wasn’t picked up during the recording process. The sound of heavy rain and crashing waves accompanies the listener at numerous moments across all four songs, at times accompanying the lonesome echoey guitar nicely and at others providing more of a distraction, but then really nothing is pleasant about listening to this album. Despite the relative few attempting such a style, this would not be the album for one looking to explore the genre with one listen. Just too staid and plain for much of its time, Somnolent have walked the path lesser trodden and come out at the end of it with a record stuck firmly in 1st gear and featuring few flourishes to keep you entertained on the journey. Zur wachsenden Familie des russischen Labels Solitude Prod. gesellten sich vor kurzem auch die Ukrainer SOMNOLENT, die erst seit gut zwei Jahren zusammen musizieren. “Monochromes Philosophy” ist das erste Vollzeitzeugnis der Band, aber so richtig warm werde ich mit der Scheibe nicht.
Auf diesem Album haben sich SOMNOLENT dem Funeral Doom verschrieben, denn sie ziemlich gnadenlos durchziehen. Bis auf einen unerwarteten, kurzen Death-Metal-Ausbruch im dritten Stück “Paradoxes Of The Universe” wälzt sich das Klangmaterial äußerst schwerfällig aus den Boxen.
Man kann nicht behaupten, dass sich die Band nicht um Atmosphäre bemüht. Wind- und Wettergeräusche, akustische Spielereien auf der Gitarre und dissonante Bassklänge sorgen für starke Kontraste und auch auf melodischer Ebene wird versucht, ein paar starke Hauptmotive herauszuarbeiten.
Aber wie das wohl so ist mit Alben, die sich an den extremen Genrerändern positionieren, ist die Gesamtstimmung und wie sie sich auf den Hörer transportiert, das Entscheidende. Manchmal klappt es, manchmal nicht, die Unterschiede sind oft nur mit der Lupe auszumachen.
Für Doom-Freunde, die den extrem langsamen und doppelt melancholisch-verzweifelten Klängen zugeneigt sind, hat “Monochromes Philosophy” durchaus gute Momente zu bieten. Interessant wird es vor allem, wenn die Ukrainer aus dem gewohnten Düsterschema ausbrechen, und eine ganz eigene Note mit “positiveren, hellen” Klängen einbringen. Allerdings wechseln solche Momente auch immer wieder mit ziemlich monotonen Passagen, die den Bogen schnell überdehnen. Diese Einfarbig- und Eintönigkeit ist sicherlich gewollt, aber je restriktiver man bei Kompositionen und Arrangements vorgeht, umso enger wird auch der Spielraum. Und der Raum zwischen Monotonie, die zu unterhalten weiß, und Monotonie, die schnell ziemlich öde wird, ist klein.
Auch nach mehreren Anläufen will bei mir der Funke nicht recht überspringen. Oder sagen wir: Mein Stimmungsmotor stottert, aber springt nicht an. Interessant ist da – auch wenn es für dieses Album keine Rolle spielt – dass SOMNOLENT bereits neue Pfade beschreiten, und die hören sich mit der Öffnung zu Jazz und Art Rock sehr vielversprechend an.

“Ах, Одесса, жемчужина у моря…”. Не так уж много команд из этого морского города, попадают в поле зрения любителей тяжелой музыки. А если говорить о doom metal, то SOMNOLENT, кажется, вообще первая. Более того, это не просто doom metal, а то, что называется funeral doom metal with death/doom influences. Вот эти самые death/doom влияния немного разнообразят музыку сонных (somnolent – усыпляющий) одесситов, привнося в их монохромную философию, легкие, но глубокие оттенки серого, появляющиеся словно загадочные тени из царства мрачных полутонов… Четыре композиции, длящиеся бесконечный час полны замогильной атмосферой, вязкими риффами, звуками прибоя и дождя, неспешными соло и вокалом, плавно перетекающим из гроула, то в скрим, то в полускрежет (слушай: REVELATION “Иная Реальность”). Звук плотен, но грязноват, впрочем, это как патина (или паутина?), воспринимающаяся словно необходимая деталь, выдерживающая дух и ноту этой записи. В то же время, нельзя сказать, что альбом захватывает воображение или вызывает неординарно сильные эмоции. Это просто хороший, твердый и крепкий альбом, который создает правильную фьюнерал-думовую атмосферу и предназначен прежде всего именно для тех, у кого funeral doom metal – неотъемлемая часть души.

Я уже давно следил за этой мрачной похоронной бригадой из совсем немрачного города Одесса. И вот, наконец-то, ко мне в руки попал их дебютный альбом Monochromes Philosophy. Несмотря на молодость существования, группа уже успела отыграть достаточно много концертов и приобрести широкую известность в андеграунде… да, пока что именно в андеграунде. Глядя на фотографии с выступлений, представленные на заднике, поймал себя на мысли, что никогда не слышал funeral metal вживую. А вот интересно, как люди на метал-концертах воспринимают тех же Somnolent… В любом случае, на данный момент это сложно представить, но зато, как я уже сказал, у меня есть сам альбом, что тоже неплохо. Я веду монолог о сравнении концертного звучания и студийного (в отношении рассматриваемого диска) потому, что запись Monochromes Philosophy получилась уж очень живой. Даже отчасти кажется, что с записанного live-выступления потом в студии были урезаны все посторонние шумы и звуки и оставлены лишь инструменты с вокалом. Очень интересный эффект, который, собственно, и заставляет закрыть глаза на посредственное качество звука. Сама же музыка – типичный funeral doom death, тяжелый, мрачный, местами пафосный, местами занудный. Да, порой ловишь себя на мысли, что чего-то здесь не хватает, все звучит уж слишком инертно. И звучание соло-гитары у меня порой вызывает недоумение: либо это фишка такая, которую я не понял, либо гитарист действительно «косячит». Из однозначных плюсов – мощный гроулинг вокалиста и композиция Paradoxes Of The Universe, где после 15 минут неторопливой похоронщины музыканты вдруг резко делают бросок в олдскульный death metal. Оно сразу встряхивает, как после удара! И, учитывая качество звука, создается впечатление, что слушаешь команду начала 90-х, приятная такая ностальгия. Очень хочется, чтобы в будущем музыканты обратили внимание именно на такие моменты. И речь тут не конкретно о бросках из медленного death в скоростной, а о разнообразии и оригинальности в целом. Шестерка за альбом и плюс бал за Paradoxes Of The Universe.

Ну вот скажите честно, у кого Одесса может ассоцироваться с фьюнерал-думом? Жемчужина у моря, шаланды, полные кефали, и далее по тексту, никак иначе. Но посмотрим упрямым фактам в глаза – не где-нибудь, а именно в тех южных краях творит группа, которую без малого можно назвать самым интересным дум-коллективом на территории если не всего СНГ, то уж ридной неньки точно!
Начав со стандартного фьюнерала (очень грубо говоря, замедленными вариациями на темы Shape of Despair и My Dying Bride), «сонный» («somnolent» – от англ. сонный) коллектив мутировал во что-то удивительно-невообразимое, сочетающее в себе элементы спейс-рока, слоу-джаза в духе Bohren & der Club of Gore и экспериментального подхода великих Esoteric.
Все это нам обещано развить и представить в наилучшем виде на следующем релизе, а пока все вышеописанные элементы нет-нет да и мелькнуть среди вязких гнетущих риффов и классических думовых саундэффектов вроде дождя/ветра/шума волн/итд.
Концептуальное путешествие длиной почти в час, для удобства разбитое на 4 продолжительных трека, не оставит равнодушным не только почитателей похоронного жанра, но и любителей более разнообразной музыки.
Приятно, когда дебютная работа не только отличается самобытностью и профессионализмом, но и недвусмысленно дает понять, что самое интересное нас ждет впереди – развитие не остановишь!

Пять украинских металлистов хоронят кого-то под медленные (а как же иначе!) и длительные Doom Metal’ические композиции. Действительно, все представленные треки на диске довольно продолжительные (длительность первых трех треков более 16 минут!), а альбом образует один большой реквием. Вся траурная церемония проходит на фоне дождливого пасмурного дня (а может даже и ночи). Дождь то появляется, то исчезает, напоминая о себе слушателю. Его шелестящий звук время от времени выходя на первый план заставляет нас прислушаться к нему (почтить память минутой молчания?). Нечастые раскаты грома намекают на то, что сие действие происходит летом.
Иногда инструменты пытаются ускориться, но тут же спотыкаются на ровном месте и начинают снова продолжать в прежнем темпе. За исключением этих моментов темп в течение всего альбома больше не меняется!
Гроулинг то и дело резко врывается в картину происходящего. Помимо гроулинга, в альбоме замечены скрим-вокал, и, также довольно часто используемый (если это можно назвать вокалом) шепот. В некоторые моменты звучит совершенно что-то иное, что-то среднее…
Ударные же блещут разнообразием (относительно остальных инструментов этого альбома разумеется), изредка отбивая быстро несколько ударов подряд.
Все четыре трека альбома звучат однообразно. Хотя в то же время в каждом из них есть ключевые моменты по которым можно однозначно определить какой это трек. «Монохромная философия» действительно является монохромной не только на обложке диска.
Все тексты композиций альбома являются англоязычными. Их можно найти на прилагаемом к диску буклете (всех, кроме четвертого – он инструментальный).

Be honest with yourself- when’s the last time you’ve heard a good new funeral doom band? I’d have to hazard a guess and say Celestiial, perhaps.. but even they’ve been around for four or so years or so. With pretty much every new-ish funeral doom band these days sucking it seems to me that perhaps it’s time to put the casket in already and let the priest finish his spiel.
Somnolent play a particularly boring sort of funeral doom- like most Skepticism clones, it’s got that slow and reverb drenched sound but with none of the mysticism and general otherworldly vibe that those finns have. The compositions here aren’t terrible- to their credit they avoid the whole “really slow chords over and over again” trap that bands like Comatose Vigil and the like seem to constantly fall into- but the songs still don’t go anywhere, the amount of rainfall samples would make drudkh blush, and the lead guitar!!? For a band with otherwise decent production values, the way out of tune lead guitar (particularly offensive in the first song, where you’ve got 16 minutes of constant ear torture) is a really confusing thing. The hell where they thinking? It doesn’t take much to tune a freakin’ guitar, and what could otherwise be a somewhat decent lead is ruined by the whining-cat, hopelessly out of tune guitar tone.
The brief death metal bit in the third track aside, this is one long, out of tune and rather pointless slog. One thing I have to wonder is why, WHY would you make these songs so long? The whole “repeat a theme or two for a really long time” thing can work, but three of the tracks here are over 16 minutes. And for what purpose, seriously? The two figureheads of funeral doom- Skepticism and the mighty Thergothon- kept their music at least relatively concise. It’s no surprise that the best track (if you can get over the wretchedly awful lead guitar) here is the shortest; “Imperceptible Noise…” giving us yet another rainfall intro, a short intro, a theme or two and then fading out in the relatively short time of 8 minutes. This album would be twice as good if the songs had been cut in half- really, you could cut all of these tracks down to 6 or so minutes without any major loss in the compositions.
To conclude, then; a very stock standard (read: boring) funeral doom release, with some way out of tune lead guitar on top just for some extra awful. Avoid.

Il n’y a pas que des milliardaires pétés de thunes aux goûts douteux et Vladimir Poutine mais bien une sacrée scène metal en Russie. Il faut dire qu’avec une population totale de 142 millions d’habitants (merci wikipédia), ce serait quand même ballot s’il n’avait pas un ou deux groupes de metaaaaaaal en stock. Sauf que pour l’instant, seule la scène extrême réussi à s’exporter, et plus particulièrement ces groupes de metal à sandales, dont ARKONA (attention, Prince de Lu va faire ‘schwiiiiing’ là) reste le plus fier représentant. Or cela fait désormais presque quatre ans que le label Solitude Productions s’active dans son coin pour nous prouver qu’en terme de Dimanche après-midi passés à regarder la pluie tomber sur la vitre sale d’un appartement sans lumière ni chauffage – pour ceux qui n’ont pas compris, on parle de doom là – l’ex-URSS et ses pays satellitaires ont pas mal de mélasse en stock. Si cette structure s’est permise quelques à-côtés et signatures internationales, comme le sludge des Bataves d’HEAVY LORD ou l’ambient suisse pouic-pouic du frère spirituel de STRIBORG, VINTERRIKET, sa spécialité reste le doom/death et le funeral doom slave. Soit des groupes souvent fauchés, loin d’être novateurs mais dont l’entrain sans limite à ce genre de charme rustique inimitable pour qui cherche du bon underground de chez underground.
SOMNOLENT correspond exactement à cette description. Si son tempo ultra-balourd – on a parfois le temps d’aller acheter un croissant entre deux coups de caisse claire – et la longueur de ses titres (jusqu’à dix-huit minutes !) semble le qualifier d’entrée comme funeral doom, le groupe tape en fait plutôt dans un doom/death pachydermique. Car malgré la présence d’un claviériste à temps plein, et plutôt que de suggérer comme le veulent les canons du genre une atmosphère de rêve à grands renforts de nappes, ces Ukrainiens pèsent de tout leur poids (littéralement) sur leurs riffs aux harmoniques grinçantes et sur le chant tout-à-tour grogné puis hurlé de leur frontman. Pour une raison obscure, peut-être cette atmosphère terreuse ( ?!), ‘Monochromes Philosophy’ me rappelle l’unique album des Israéliens de Substance For God (‘Assembly Of Flower’ en 1994), notamment à cause de cette façon de laisser traîner ses pieds musicalement parlant. Volontairement, tout cela ne décolle jamais et progresse à une allure d’escargot, sans aucune envolée lyrique ou musicale derrière qui aurait pu offrir un (timide) rayon de soleil. Non, c’est doom de chez doom et donc bien déprimant mais surtout assez redondant. Histoire de redorer son blason, le groupe parle sur sa page myspace de ‘doom expérimental’ mais là franchement, je ne vois pas trop.
Confectionné par le batteur du groupe, le côté ‘falaise de Bretagne un matin de grande tempête’ (comment ça je suis chauvin ?!) de sa pochette a au moins le mérite de changer un peu, même si c’est quand même assez moche. Mais c’est globalement la seule touche d’originalité (oui, je sais, c’est léger) de ce disque ultra-conventionnel mais somme toute à fond dans son trip. Comme la grosse majorité des sorties de SOLITUDE PRODUCTIONS en gros donc…

Четыре композиции длительностью под час? Ясное дело – перед нами очередной грузящий опус из категории фьюнерал-дум. Уточнить осталось лишь две детали: а) Somnolent – руппа отечественного происхождения; и б) При всей аккуратности следования жанровым традициям, альбом “Monochromes Philosophy” почему то не вызывает ответных эмоций – похоже ребята просто забыли вложить в него душу…

In regards to actually having the right components for a good funeral doom record, Somnolent do have what it takes. Still, simply having the ingredients doesn’t make the cake, and the Ukrainian quintet’s methods are certainly questionable. Ignoring the whitewash elements that plague bands like Tyranny and Wraith of the Ropes, Somnolent try and rise above the murk of mediocre funeral doom with well placed guitar lines and anguish-ridden gutturals. They try. Credit must be given for at least making an attempt, because in funeral doom it seems that most bands don’t even make an effort – Somnolent make an effort, but unfortunately are not successful.
Opener “Unrequited Love to Reverie” opens with an eerie guitar melody akin to something from Worship’s Last CD Before Doomsday; an emulation of one of funeral doom’s greatest records is sure to add something to the air, but Somnolent ground the technique into the dust. It comes off as forced, it feels like the band is trying too hard, and do not expect it to incite some emotional response from deep within your tortured soul.
The best way to describe Monochromes Philosophy would be occasional moments of pure doom (or the odd Ataraxie influenced death metal battery) suffocated by a general atmosphere of monotony – this album draaags. The title track is a good representation of this, with an incessantly boring build-up to a well fitting, if short, finale. Repetition is a vital element of funeral doom, but naturally the technique will be completely ineffective if what you’re repeating is insubstantial. While Somnolent are not entirely insubstantial like many other funeral doom bands, they still do not reach that certain degree of profundity that is needed for albums in the genre to really stick out.
The lo-fi feeling of the record is one which I can definitely appreciate, and Somnolent create a somewhat genuine atmosphere despite their compositional tedium. Alexey’s vocals contribute to the aforementioned atmosphere – his gutturals have a nice raw element to them, in a similar vein to that of Worship’s Max Varnier, but still do not carry that intense emotional fragility that Varnier was able to convey. Whether or not it was an intentional act by the band, but the shaky and out of tune lead guitar lines are very strange – they add to the album’s lo-fi and underground mood, but listening to tuneless melodies is simply not enjoyable.
I’m confident that there is potential behind Somnolent’s five members, but Monochromes Philosophy does not reach any level in which this potential can be properly explored. In any case, this particular record does not make the funeral doom cut, and with a genre so reliant on atmosphere, an album needs to be good to have any real affect on the listener. There is no ‘average’ with funeral doom – it either works, or it doesn’t. The elements of a good funeral doom album are sprinkled throughout Monochromes Philosophy, but they do not collude in a way in which to dignify the record. Being their debut, Somnolent still have an opportunity to mature their sound; let’s hope they take it.

Somnolent vienen de Odesa (Ukrania) y, a diferencia de la mayoría de bandas de su país, centradas en el Black Metal (al menos las que conocemos por estos lares, prefieren los paisajes vacíos, inertes y estériles del más desesperante Funeral Doom Metal. Anteriormente habían editado únicamente una demo en directo, grabada en su propia ciudad, y a continuación ficharon por Solitude Productions. Cabe decir que a continuación de este primer álbum, también editaron un split junto a sus compatriotas Krobak.
Describir la música de Somnolent es muy sencillo en realidad, o al menos lo es para todo el que conozca los primeros trabajos de My Dying Bride, Anathema o la escuela finesa (Skepticism, Thergothon, Colosseum). Las desoladoras de melodías de Konstantin Voyku se extienden como llantos sobre la eterna base rítmica de Alexandr Mazurenko y Yuriy Kononov (bajo y batería respectivamente), para pintar el lienzo sobre el que nos contará sus pesimistas visiones del mundo su vocalista Alexey, con un registro absolutamente gutural y muy crudo.
No destacan por su originalidad, obviamente, aunque más o menos transmiten lo mismo que las bandas mencionadas, y saben como conseguir que su música te de una visión vacía, depresiva y puramente existencialista, una filosofía monocroma, como bien dice el título del disco, con una obvia tendencia hacia lo negro.
No me quejaré mucho de la producción, las guitarras suenan más o menos pesadas y la voz está bien encajada en ella, impregnada de su triste musicalidad, y me gusta que le hayan dado especial importancia a la base rítmica, que al fin y al cabo hace la mayor parte del trabajo sucio. Lo que no me ha convencido en realidad es el sonido de la guitarra, siendo su función melódica y solista, al no estar tan bien mezclada con el resto de instrumentos, y destacar demasiado, aparte de no tener un sonido del todo nítido y preciso.

Solitude seems to be a big fan of doom metal, in particular funeral doom, as one can find by the list of releases presented here. Here’s another, and boy are we starting to get sick of it. Tip, don’t marginalize yourself. Still, Somnolent isn’t exactly a poor quality band. They create some really powerful riffs at times, heart-wrenching pulses of feedback and decayed strings slothing together. Sometimes, though, it sounds like proper tuning was forgotten. Very hard to describe, suffice to say anyone with an actual ear for music will cringe occasionally. Is this on purpose? We all know minor steps are totally brutally evil, but this just sounds like someone forgot their scales. We hope so, and we’ll give them the benefit of the doubt. If you’re looking for funeral doom where true dissonance rings out with token waves in the background, Monochromes Philosophy might be for you, might.
