Pitchline Zine
6/10
07.09.2011

Из композиций лучшими мне кажутся "The Funeral Of All", "Distant Stars", "Suffer" и "Mother Alethia".

Forgotten Path
6/10

Here we have the debut from Swedish Death/Doom Metal band Nox Aurea. The band consists of six members and has released two albums to date. There is nothing new or really fascinating I want to mention, it is just typical Death/Doom Metal with female vocals. In fact, you could have heard probably every composition in other projects. On the other hand, the music is pretty strong and involving, so let’s take a look to see if it is worth it or not to listen to this new project.
In the beginning I should say that I just do not like weak female vocals, which dominate here. I know that for some people it sounds great, but for me if it’s weaker than Theater of Tragedy or Draconian - it’s a minus. “Via Gnosis” is a work with really uninteresting woman’s voice that damages the great music’s atmosphere. It sounds like angry and Doom’ed Metal music with some person from a Pop or bad Progressive Rock group singing. It reminds me of Ciccada and their “A Child in the Mirror”. This would be great Progressive Rock, but the vocals just make this one of thousands of others. In Nox Aurea we have strong male vocals and it carries the magnificent side of the music. The idea that life must be as depressing as it is joyful, it would be great and full of harmony, but there is the music and if you mix shit with a masterpiece, you still get shit. Otherwise, it balances between good and bad vocally, but the bad is much stronger...
Metal is considered by vocals, guitars and drums, and in some peoples’ opinion - vocals are less important. So is it about guitar and drums? In the first second of listening to this work, my first idea was – “hmmm... I’ve heard it somewhere”. Later it become clear - original side here is too poor to sound new. However, we have really strong and full of variety mood here. It is always developing. “Dark picture replace spiritual light, that light melted, comes something huge and sorrowful, later it gone and we get into nude forest...”. In some part it could remind the funeral that lets me compare it with some Funeral Doom Metal bands like Ahab and Esoteric. Of course these bands are much better than this medium type music.
The last thing which is usually rated really high is the technical side. The technical side is strong here. It is really natural, because the band is from Sweden, which has a huge Metal scene, there non-technical bands simply do not become popular and nobody knows them. Nox Aurea, in my opinion, is not an underground Metal band - it is just not popular yet.
In conclusion, “Via Gnosis” is not interesting enough to listen to more than once or twice, but it has strong atmosphere and sounds really technical. Furthermore this work is some type of normal Doom/Death and Gothic Metal mix, which has something from each of them, but if you look in corpus, it is too predictable and boring - every song sounds too monotonous and it sounds the same if you just listen to samples of it. You can try it if you are a big fan of Doom Metal music and like it no matter if it leaves something with you or not, but for everyone else it will be just another Doom Metal album without something unique or memorable.

Diabolical Conquest
6.9/10
07.09.2010

Before they became remarkably awful, the Norwegian group Funeral released a record by the name of Tragedies – while like most early-mid 90s doom records Tragedies has not aged incredibly well, it set the standard for a particular style of doom which is now grotesquely abundant throughout Europe. This style, that of gothic death/doom, is perhaps my least favourite. The overused ‘lamentations’ by so many faceless groups are overwhelmingly bad, and even the more popular bands to whom Nox Aurea can be compared, such as Draconian, are plain irritating. One of the biggest problems with the genre is that there is a huge restriction on the amount of variation these musicians can include in their style – if you’re making gothic death/doom, you adhere to the typical gothic death/doom tenets, and you have your run of the mill gothic death/doom album. Now, if you’re not especially fond of gothic death/doom, it’s hard to find any listening pleasure in these wholly manufactured bands.

Nox Aurea heil from one of Europe’s safe havens for melodic music, perhaps the only one outside of Eastern Europe – Gothenburg, Sweden. Their country mate Draconian is like an older brother, setting the standard for contemporary commercialised death/doom, one which Nox Aurea stick to as closely as possible. It’s all here – spoken word sections (both male and female), synths, violins, gutturals, heavenly female vocals, despondent atmosphere, acoustic interludes etc. etc. What makes Via Gnosis listenable, plus allowing me to give it a somewhat positive rating, is simply riffs. I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of this music – anyone who has read some of my doom reviews before will know that anything that is ‘gothic’ will usually be scorned in every possible way, but for some reason I am a little partial to this record. It’s not technically proficient, but some of the songs (particularly in the first half, it gets monotonous the longer it goes on) are certainly enjoyable. Having thought about it for a little while, I think it may be because the ‘gothic’ element is not overly explicit – sure, the inclusion of female vocals or My Dying Bride inspired speeches certainly categorises this as something from the gothic realms of music, but because the band manages to remember that they’re still playing a variation of death metal makes Via Gnosis partially tolerable.

Perhaps I’m not the best person to be reviewing this kind of music, but I like to think I know my doom, and that definitely includes being highly critical of its mediocrity. Nox Aurea aren’t anything special – I’m actually surprised I somewhat liked this record, considering I despise Draconian and Via Gnosis is Draconian worship at best. Nevertheless, this record is not inherently bad. If bands like Draconian, My Dying Bride, DOOM:VS, or even (dread the thought) Swallow the Sun appeal to you, then you will definitely enjoy Via Gnosis. Though I won’t be spinning it incessantly after I’ve filed this review, you can count on that. It’s only their first record, and in the year since its release the band have released their second album – whether they’ve made any improvements, I cannot tell you, but what I will say is that Nox Aurea are the sort of band who, if the right corrections are made, can become something memorable within this style of death/doom.

Review
Maelstorm #69
5/10

Nox Aurea’s Via Gnosis is largely good but standard fare slow, plodding doom metal with keyboard atmosphere to thicken it up. The instruments sound nice (post production was handled by Andy LaRocque), but the vocals, which are also technically fine, can often seem too loud in comparison.

Or maybe it’s that Nox Aurea sound like they’re going through motions that aren’t that original or inspired. Specifically, the band has an unfortunate knack for killing the momentum of its creations with a languid break with spoken passage in that affected male voice common to doom metal that wants to tell you how morbidly beautiful it is in dying. It’s silly and groanworthy, even on the first time. Even sillier than the female singing on Via Gnosis, which is too girly and dainty for the rest of what Nox Aurea is trying to do.

If you have to have all things doom, you could do worse than Via Gnosis. It’s a decent album, but then again, if you have some great doom records, why not listen to those instead, for the millionth time?

PS: How does it work out that there are six people in Nox Aurea, but three of them play "all instruments," and a fourth plays drums?

Metalvox

Metal Daze
3.5/5
08.07.2010

Pest Webzine

Although Solitude Prod. presents the band as being a young one, Nox Aurea are around since 2005, so I won't consider the band young. This is their debut album, a major effort extended for more than 70 minutes of depressive, dark and melancholic sounds brilliantly released by this ultra-professional Russian label (one of the best I've seen lately). Nox Aurea are compared mostly with Draconian, but there are multiple differences between the two bands: Draconian relay mostly on female vocals while Nox Aurea are based more on the male vox having female vox as support only, Nox Aurea are darker, more death metal influenced, have a heavier sound (traditional doom metal type) while Draconian are more gothic influenced, and Nox Aurea are much more depressive and melancholic than Draconian, so I wouldn't agree completely with these comparisons, maybe only a bit with the older Draconian work.
I do enjoy a lot the vocal work, 4 of the 5 musicians have their vocal touch inhere and although most of the time it's regular Doom Death hoarse types of vocals, the combination with Alice's warm tone and with some male clean parts it's something that gets to you quickly if you're into this music. The drums work is also a very good one revealing a drummer full of ideas, and regarding the guitars I have only one observation, I would have liked some melodic guitar solos here and there. Though I would recommend this only to Doom/Death connaisseurs as the length will bore the hell out of you if you're not used to such sounds.
The production is splendid, no worries about that, you'll get a very professional material like there all once.
