Thankfully behind us are the days when all those terrible tribute CDs came out on Dwell Records. It was tribute CD after tribute CD, featuring a dozen bands you’d never heard of before and you’d never hear of again.

Not so with Solitude Productions’ Tribute to Thergothon. The doom bands paying tribute here are tip-top: Asunder, Evoken, Colosseum, Aarni, and Worship. And the tracks they turn out are superb — perhaps even better than some of the original music that Thergothon recorded.

Being two CDs, however, means that Rising of Yog-Sothoth can get a little long in the tooth, and vary in quality… but not so much as making you think someone snuck a different album into your player while you were blissed out on crushing doom metal. Pretty much everything on disk one until Worship’s (track 7) cut is great, and a few songs on the 2nd disk are highlights, including one with some actual signing (!).

Finally, what makes this comp also kind of neat is how versions of the same Thergothon song can be interpreted very differently from band to band, with the difference between Asunder and Inter Arbores’ versions of “Who Rides the Astral Winds” being the first example that comes to mind.

Rising of Yog Sothoth is a very rare compilation in that it is relevant in the modern day of CDRs and mp3s in that all the tracks were made specifically for this album. In that sense, it is more of a 17-way split than a comp. The packaging is simple yet attractive, and reading through the booklet makes you want to find out more about the individual bands, as well as go check out how all these interpretations compare to the originals. Несмотря на то, что музыканты оставили нам в наследие всего один альбом “Stream from the Heavens”, THERGOTHON породили после себя множество групп-последователей в данном жанре по всему миру. Тот факт, что дань и уважение финнам решили отдать аж целых 17 групп с разных стран, уже о многом говорит. Les compil et les tributes sont assez boudés par les auditeurs, et pour cause, bien trop souvent ils regroupent des titres souvent disponibles ou des reprises inédites pas franchement inspirées. Le quidam du coin n’a déjà pas trop de ronds pour acheter les cd originaux alors pensez-vous qu’il aille débourser douze ou treize euros pour avoir une pâle copie… En plus, quand il s’agit d’un groupe dont la majorité des metalheads ne connaissent soit que de renom ou alors pas du tout, on plonge encore plus dans les méandres de la vente nulle. Il est alors légitime de se poser un minimum la question. Est-ce bien raisonnable de sortir un tribute au précurseur du Funeral Doom, le très bien nommé THERGOTHON ?

La réponse se trouve sur deux cd qui ont une particularité bien distincte : celle d’avoir regroupé d’un côté les ténors du style qu’on ne présentera plus, et de l’autre un paquet de groupes dits de l’underground et n’ayant pas forcément un rapport avec le style du dit groupe.

Evidemment, comme sur chaque tribute, se trouvent des titres fard. Les choses se compliquent beaucoup pour en faire autre chose, avec davantage d’accroche, sinon plus. Je pense notamment à Imindain qui doit se taper « Everlasting », ainsi que Krohm qui lui aussi a choisi ce même titre. Tous deux s’en sortent très bien dans un registre différent et l’amertume du titre est retranscrite avec justesse. Chacun va s’évertuer à vomir un titre plus culte que les autres. Mournful Congregation, leurs comparses eux aussi précurseurs, vont quant à eux reprendre avec brio le titre « Elemental », ce qui prouve encore une fois que l’on peut créer à partir d’un morceau déjà existant une ambiance encore plus lyrique et sombre.

Sur ce premier jet d’environ une heure, j’ai particulièrement apprécié la reprise d’Umbra Nihil qui a su transformer le titre avec son propre son qui lui est si cher. J’ai reconnu d’emblée que c’était eux qui exécutaient « The Twilight Fade », toujours aussi barrés ces trois là.

J’ai envie de dire que le titre de Collosseum prend une tournure plus tragique avec les événements qui viennent de toucher la formation. Là où je pensais que ce titre allait les desservir, le contraire s’est imposé à moi de fort belle manière. Evoken, qu’on ne présente plus, a fait son travail sans plus, mais a quand même réussi à alourdir « Yet the Watchers Guard ». Les Américains de Persistence In Mourning, que je ne connaissais pas du tout, retranscrivent bien l’état d’esprit du titre originel.

Le second cd est plus expérimental dans l’âme. A commencer par Nojda, groupe russe dont je n’avais jamais entendu parler, et qui pratique un Folk teinté de mysticisme, ce qui renforce le titre qu’ils reprennent, à savoir « Evoken ». Très intéressant en tout cas. D’autres formations obscures s’enchainent et j’avoue qu’il m’aura fallu fouiller un bon moment pour trouver certains artistes comme Otzepenevshiye, qui avait partagé un split cd avec les russes cités à l’instant. Leur forme artistique est plus dépouillée, ce qui entraine au premier abord un rejet et qui confirme que leur indus/ethno/ambiant façon drone passé à la moulinette est plutôt difficile à ingérer, alors à digérer je ne vous raconte pas ! Pareil pour les russes d’Inter Arbores (oui la seconde offrande est plutôt orientée vers les pays de l’est, voire même nord-est) que je connaissais un peu. Leur problème c’est que leur drone est long, voire trop long à partir, surtout quand on vient de se taper leurs confrères juste avant. Qu’importe, la lenteur porte ses fruits ici. Lourdeur en veux-tu, bah là, tu vas en avoir avec les Finlandais d’Astral Sleep qui en imposent mais qui, bizarrement, remettent un peu de lumière dans une écoute un peu somnolente jusqu’ici. On continue avec un autre zèbre de la région des milles lacs, j’ai nommé l’autre barré des neurones, Aarni, qui va encore (me botter le cul héhéhéhé) remettre une couche de son Mood metal ambiant. Ce n’est pas que je veuille insister mais le garçon doit avoir un pet au casque, déjà responsable des leads guitares distordues au sein d’Umbra Nihil, calmes et atmosphériques à la fois, il égrène sa magie sur « Verivaikerrus – Hurmehanki » de fort belle manière d’un ton acoustique. Il nous fait fumer ses champignons.

Bref, je me posais la question de savoir à quoi servait un éventuel tribute au roi du doom, et bien, après une bonne trentaine d’écoutes, je peux affirmer que c’est un double cd qui vaut son pesant d’or. Je ne saurais dire combien ils vont en vendre, mais j’espère que ce double album partira comme des petits pains car il le mérite amplement. Destiné à celles et ceux qui connaissent très bien THERGOTHON, pour que leur plaisir de comparer soit total, et ceux qui ont envie de découvrir ce groupe magique et culte malgré si peu de sorties avant le split du groupe et la fin d‘un règne.

Finalmente и arrivato. Un’etichetta come la russa Solitude, da anni portabandiera del metal piщ lento ed opprimente, non poteva non celebrare i pionieri del funeral doom, i Thergothon. Ecco dunque il tributo al gruppo finlandese, un mastodontico doppio CD corredato da una grafica bellissima, funerea come da copione. La copertina, dai colori grigio/neri, ci mostra uno scheletro, in una di quelle classiche raffigurazioni tipiche delle chiese o dei cimiteri di una volta. Il libretto, di dodici pagine (dallo sfondo piщ chiaro, che imita la pergamena) contiene tutte le informazioni relative ai gruppi che hanno partecipato all’iniziativa: per ogni band, sono riportati la provenienza geografica, la formazione ed i contatti. In un’ultima pagina l’etichetta ha voluto anche spiegare il senso di questa pubblicazione, e la frase piщ significativa и la seguente: “Speriamo che questa musica non finisca mai, e che continui a trovare nuovi adepti”. Di conseguenza, questo tributo ai Thergothon и anche un atto d’amore verso un genere musicale di nicchia, che non ha mai attirato un gruppo numeroso di ascoltatori, ma che ha sempre saputo affascinare le anime piщ depresse.
Prima di iniziare la recensione, preferisco comunque spiegare brevemente chi siano questi Thergothon, dato che a parer mio si tratta di uno dei gruppi piщ citati ma meno ascoltati in assoluto. I Thergothon si sono formati nel 1990 in Finlandia, grazie all’iniziativa di alcuni giovani musicisti: Niko Sirkiä (voce, tastiera), Mikko Ruotsalainen (chitarra), Sami Kaveri (chitarra) e Jori Sjöroos (batteria, chitarra, voce). Il gruppo ha esordito nel 1991 col demo “Fhtagn-Nagh Yog-Sothoth”, ed ha pubblicato per la Obscure Plasma il suo debut-album “Stream From The Heaven” nel 1994. In seguito, si sono perse le tracce della band, dato che i musicisti hanno preferito proseguire le proprie carriere con altri progetti musicali (This Empty Flow, PMMP e cosм via). Nonostante la loro breve esistenza, i Thergothon hanno comunque posto le basi di quello che piщ tardi verrа definito funeral doom: un doom/death lentissimo, opprimente, soffocante, dalle ritmiche gravi, all’apparenza eterne.
Passiamo dunque al commento di questo tributo, partendo dal primo CD, chiamato “Volume 1″. Ad aprire le danze ci pensano gli americani Asunder (http://www.asunder.info/), con la loro versione di “Who Rides The Astral Wings”. Il sestetto di Oakland ci regala un onesto esempio di funeral doom, ligio ai canoni del genere ed assolutamente privo di qualunque velleitа sperimentale. Attraverso il succedersi lento e scandito dei vari riff, si alternano sia i vocalizzi puliti che quelli in growling, imitando in tal modo uno dei tratti caratteristici dei Thergothon. La canzone и ben fatta, ma gli Asunder non riescono a renderla un’esperienza unica, nи particolarmente creativa. Si tratta di una cover normale, senza infamia e senza lode.
Cover che perт risalta se comparata alla versione di “Crying Blood And Crimson Snow” degli olandesi Officium Triste (http://www.officiumtriste.com/). Il quintetto ci propone una musica leggerina, che non riesce nи ad essere monumentale nи a ricreare le atmosfere plumbee degli originali finlandesi. Tutto и cosм nella norma, tutto и cosм semplice e poco personale da rendere questa traccia decisamente trascurabile. Soprattutto considerando che gli Officium Triste sono in giro dal 1994…
Ad impennare il livello qualitativo del CD ci pensano gli Evoken (http://www.myspace.com/evoken), dal New Jersey. Questi cinque musicisti ci propongono una versione stupenda di “Yet The Watchers Guard”. Ecco, l’acquisto del CD varrebbe solo per l’ascolto di questa cover. I suoni sono potentissimi e nitidi; l’arrangiamento и perfetto, e mescola alla perfezione le ruvidezze della chitarra con l’evocativitа della tastiera. Pesantissima, и un esempio di come il funeral doom andrebbe sempre suonato. Bellissima. Da ascoltare e riascoltare. Sicuramente, una delle tracce piщ significative (se non la piщ significativa) di questo tributo.
“Everlasting” и la canzone presentata dagli inglesi Imindain (http://www.myspace.com/imindain). Non si tratta di una prova particolarmente interessante, ma bisogna riconoscerle una freddezza, una spietatezza esecutiva uniche. Avanza lentamente, ma mantenendo una cadenza costante: in questo senso, “Everlasting” ha assunto le fattezze di una marcia funebre. I suoni realizzati dal trio sono cupi ed austeri.
E’ ora il turno dei finlandesi Colosseum (http://www.colosseumdoom.com/), con “The Unknown Kadath In The Cold Waste”. La loro versione non presenta particolaritа creative e, anzi, l’utilizzo delle tastiere rende il tutto innocuo, quasi dolce. Questo arrangiamento dissipa tutte le ombre cosм tipiche dei loro storici conterranei, e fa sм che la canzone assuma quasi una natura diversa. Puт piacere o meno, a seconda dei gusti. E’ suonata comunque professionalmente (ma questa considerazione vale per tutti i gruppi qui presenti).
Squallidi ed essenziali, gli australiani Mournful Congregation (http://www.myspace.com/mournfulcongregation) ci regalano una “Elemental” davvero antipatica e fredda, che tende ad allontanare le simpatie degli ascoltatori. Comunque non и male, e l’assenza di basso fa sм che il tutto risulti dannatamente rassegnato e debole.
Di tutt’altra pasta i tedeschi Worship (http://www.endzeitelegies.com), in questo caso rapprsentati dal solo The Doommonger. Da sempre il nome Worship и legato a dischi di valore, ed il loro modo di proporre “Evoken” и senza dubbio personale, freddo ed ostico. Lentissimi, i Worship creano un senso di squallore misto alla tristezza piщ cupa, che colpisce nel cuore gli ascoltatori. Ottima prova.
Doom puro, cantato con voce pulita, per i finlandesi Umbra Nihil (http://www.umbranihil.net/). “The Twilight Fade” и realizzata con un piglio deciso, e sembra rifarsi al doom piщ classico di Saint Vitus e compagnia bella. La coda strumentale dona al tutto atmosfere leggermente settantiane. Piacevoli.
Il “Volume 1″ и chiuso dal rifacimento di “Dancing In The Realm Of Shades”, canzone mai pubblicata ufficialmente e circolata tra i fan in una cassetta di prove. Gli americani Persistence In Mourning (http://www.myspace.com/persistenceinmourning) hanno compiuto un’opera di archeologia musicale, e grazie ai loro sforzi la canzone ha ripreso vita. Questo trio dell’Oklahoma si distingue per un suono davvero marcio e slabbrato, ma anche per la solennitа del loro incedere. Una prova di sufficiente personalitа.
Il “Volume 2″ и aperto dall’esibizione curiosa dei russi Noida (http://www.myspace.com/nojda), che riproducono a loro modo “Evoken”. Ovviamente, data la discografia limitata dei Thergothon, и abbastanza ovvio che i gruppi qui presenti abbiano dovuto suonare piщ o meno le medesime canzoni. Ma и interessante vedere in che modo la creativitа degli artisti abbia trovato espressione. Il duo di Domodedovo ha realizzato dunque un brano strano, dalla ritmica rituale, discretamente psichedelico anche grazie alle notevoli suggestioni orientaleggianti. La ritmica и piuttosto spedita, lineare, e tanti effetti sonori rendono piщ intrigante l’arrangiamento. Questa versione и piuttosto lontana dalla poetica musicale dei finlandesi, ma и un piacevole diversivo.
Ancora piщ lontana dagli originali и “The Unknown Kadath In The Cold Waste” reinterpretata da Otzepenevshiye (http://www.myspacecom/otzepenevshiye), progetto solista di Arnold pR/Asterius. In realtа questa traccia non ha nulla a che spartire con il funeral doom, ed и piuttosto un brano industrial/dark ambient, caratterizzato da campionamenti. Originale dunque.
Si ritorna su territori piщ usuali con gli americani Krohm (http://www.krohmcrypt.com/), anzi dovrei utilizzare il singolare visto che si tratta del progetto solista dell’artista di Seattle Numinas. Dopo le due tracce precedenti, il ritorno di un funeral doom cosм ligio ai propri canoni risulta quasi deludente. Eppure Krohm dimostra di sapere il fatto suo, sebbene non brilli nи in quanto a fronzoli, nи in quanto a potenza. La canzone proposta da Numinas и “Everlasting”.
L’originalitа ritorna ai suoi picchi con “Who Rides The Astral Wings” nella versione dei russi Inter Arbores (http://www.interarbores.doom-art.ru/). In realtа, la canzone и riprodotta con accenti folk, a volte ambient, che creano una tristezza senza fine, senza perт essere tenebrosa. Buono il lavoro del trio, attento ad utilizzare la piщ ampia gamma timbrica disponibile, anche grazie a strumenti inusuali.
Deludenti invece i finlandesi Astral Sleep (http://www.astralsleep.net/), autori di bei dischi, ma poco ispirati in questa “Yet The Watchers Guard”. A parte un discreto potenziale di depressione, la traccia non va oltre alla pura routine. Comparata poi alla versione dello stesso brano proposta dagli Evoken, questa traccia scompare nell’anonimato piщ completo.
Il secondo CD sembra voler esprimere il linguaggio dei Thergothon nelle maniera piщ impreviste. Ed ecco quindi far di nuovo capolino le sonoritа folk e ambient, grazie a “Crying Blood And Crimson Snow” rivisitata dai finlandesi Aarni (http://www.aarni.info/). Carina, con l’utilizzo del flauto e la voce mormorata. Insomma, personale come poche volte и capitato nel corso di questo tributo.
I canadesi Axis Of Advance (http://www.aoa.arkss.net/) propongono invece una rigorosa versione di “Elemental”, che si fa apprezzare pur non sorprendendo. Il trio non prova a cambiare le carte in tavola, ma esercita il suo mestiere con una cover priva di slanci. Onesti.
Ecco ora la canzone finale di questo incredibile tributo. Si tratta di “The Twilight Fade” realizzata da Singultus, un curioso artista inglese. Doom semplice e rozzo, con vocalizzi distorti ed acuti. Dura solo due minuti questo brano, e sembra interrotto apposta, bruscamente. Un errore del mio promo, o и proprio cosм?
Credetemi ragazzi, ci ho messo una vita e mezza per ascoltare a dovere questo tributo ai Thergothon. Ascoltare e riascoltare, perchи solo cosм и possibile scrivere una recensione decente. Ne и valsa perт la pena. Per gli amanti del funeral doom, si tratta di una pubblicazione irrinunciabile. Non penso che ci siano tantissimi lettori in grado di apprezzare questo lavoro, perchи il funeral doom non и un genere adatto a tutti i palati. Ma una nicchia di appassionati non potrа che gioire per questa nuova, interessantissima pubblicazione della Solitude Prod, che ha finalmente omaggiato con tanta passione i suoi numi tutelari.

Fundados en 1990 en Kaarina (Finlandia), estos pioneros de lo que luego se denominaría Funeral Doom, son versionados por diferentes artistas, quienes tomaron canciones del oscurísimo disco debut del grupo “Stream From The Heavens” (1994) para hacerlas propias y regar de lamentos el disco doble que Solitude Productions lanzó en Noviembre del año pasado.
En el primer CD se destacan las intervenciones de OFFICIUM TRISTE con el cadavérico “Crying Blood And Crimson Snow”, los reconocidos EVOKEN y su “Yet The Watchers Guard” (el funeral sí que mete miedo amigos), COLOSSEUM y “The Unknown Kadath In The Cold Waste” y en el cierre PERSISTENCE IN MOURNING y la versión cadaverica de “Dancing In The Realm Of Shades”.
En la segunda parte, encontramos ocho bandas más, todas practicantes del Doom y el Death Metal más denso que podamos conocer, y entre estas resaltamos la acción de KROHM (“Everlasting”), ASTRAL SLEEP (“Yet The Watchers Guard”) y AXIS OF ADVANCE (“Elemental”).
Sabemos que éste es un sub género difícil de asimilar y por ende de encontrarle “la vuelta” como para meternos de lleno con alguna banda, pero sepan que aquí hay una muy buena producción, con gran sonido, completo booklet, fiel arte de tapa y canciones…que en definitiva, son lo que más interesa.

Compra CD, poster, merchandise e tanto altro… Cerca Tribute To Thergothon su ebay

Quando si inizia a pensare alla scena doom nord-europea è naturale che vengano in mente i Thergothon, band che, formatasi nel novanta in Finlandia, con soli un demo e un disco all’attivo nella breve discografia, è riuscita ad essere leggenda. Ma che disco?! Stream from the Heavens, titolo del debutto di cui sopra, ha ispirato una bella fetta di band sia nel proprio stato, che nei dintorn. Ebbene, come avrete già capito, ci troviamo di fronte ad un tributo, una compilation in onore di questo storico gruppo, costituita da una bella marmaglia di band di fama totalmente diversa, alcune letteralmente sconosciute, ed altre con un buon feedback. Spaziando dal funeral doom fino ad altri generi, pur sempre restando nell’area più oscura e cupa del metallo, con diverse qualità di registrazione e produzione. Due dischi, nove brani interpretati da diciassette diverse realtà della scena.
Si parte col primo capitolo, dal fare lento e maestoso, imponente e brutale, nebbioso e tenebroso, un incedere di doom estremo che ricorda proprio la band elogiata con questa compilation, in cui i Colosseum, all’opera con The Unknown Kadath In The Cold Waste, riescono a tenere ben saldo il livello di emozioni della versione originale. Buona anche la prestazione degli Evoken con Yet The Watchers Guard e degli Asunder con l’opener Who Rides The Astral Wings.
Passiamo al secondo capitolo, anche perchè, a dir la verità, andrebbero citate tutte le canzoni, essendo tutte di livello piuttosto alto.
Ebbene, quì troviamo quel lato più innovativo e sperimentale di questo tributo, in cui la spuntano i Krohm per una reinterpretazione davvero macchinosa di Everlasting, decisamente particolare, a mio avviso. Grandissima la prova melodica ed evocativa degli Inter Arbores, alle prese con Who Rides The Astral Wings, e non da meno, di certo, gli Aami, strana a dir poco.
Per concludere brevemente, questa compilation in onore dei Thergothon è quindi riuscita alla perfezione, non si poteva fare di meglio direi, nemmeno una sola traccia al dì sotto delle aspettative, un doppio-cd che ogni vero cultore del doom dovrebbe far suo.

Despite having only a couple of demos and a single full-length to their name, Thergothon are widely regarded as one of, if not the, progenitors of funeral doom, and a tribute is as overdue as it is welcome. With seventeen bands spread over two CDs, it is inevitable that not only will practically every song ever penned by the legendary Finns be covered, but that some will be covered more than once. The biggest name is undoubtedly Evoken — a proverbial hairs breadth away from their own tribute — accompanied by a smattering of familiar doom names such as Mournful Congregation, Officium Triste and Worship, with a tiny handful falling outside doom. Most of the remaining bands are obscure to varying degrees, and it’s doubtful that many — nay, most — of our readers are familiar with say, Nojda, Otzepenevshiye or Aarni.
One cannot fault Solitude Productions for wanting to release an apt tribute to the scene godfathers, but they have been overambitious and listening to all seventeen songs in one sitting is a trying experience, as it tends towards monotony, not helped by repeated covers. Most have opted to stay close to the original; notable exceptions are the delightfully different covers of “Evoken” by Worship and Nojda. Nor are all the covers equal, yet on a balance this gets there is enough variety and quality for _Rising of Yog-Sothoth_ to get the thumbs up, as exposing a few unknowns to me that I will definitely be exploring further.

Кто бы мог подумать, что выпустив всего один альбом, финны Thergothon станут явлением на андеграундной сцене, и через некоторые время начнут появляться команды, играющие в новом подстиле фьюнерал-дум, основателями которого Thergothon и являются. Желающих отдать дань коллективу набралось немало каверов накопилось на два диска. При этом у самих финнов материала примерно в два раза меньше. Таким образом, та или иная композиция на данной компиляции представлена в двух интерпретациях от разных коллективов. Некоторые версии сыграны близко к оригиналу, как, например, у австралийцев Mournful Congregation (причем звучание также низкого качества), иные решили по-своему переосмыслить творчество Thergothon, при этом не выходя за рамки дум-метала. Неплоха версия от отечественного one-man band Otzepenevshiye, в которой вкраплены элементы эмбиента и нойза. При этой кавер на эту же композицию (которая, кстати, называется “The Unkwon Kadath In The Cold Waste”) от Colosseum также оставляет приятное впечатление, по крайней мере по качеству записи (равно как и Axis Of Advance). Понравились Umbra Nihil, представившие, пожалуй, наименее экстремальный трек, напоминающий Paradise Lost времен ‘Icon’.; Noida любопытны тем, что использовали при записи “Evoken” варган и ритуальный барабан, и на выходе получился прям какой-то tribal doom… Можно еще долго обсуждать различные композиции, их плюсы и минусы, но, пожалуй, будет лчше если вы сами послушаете трибьют и составите собственное мнение.

Det er flaut å innrømme, men sjøl om Funeral Doom er en sjanger som rager høyt i kurs om dagen (og om nettene) er Thergothon fortsatt temmelig ukjent farvann for undertegnede. Sånn sett har absolutt denne hyllest-plata en misjon og får eksponert folk for dette finske bandet (som regnes som en av de store pionerene innen genren). Utgivelsen er dobbel og huser mange store aktører, deriblant Evoken, Asunder, Colosseum (fin), Krohm og Worship. Det er likevel de mer ukjente bandene som utgjør majoriteten av bandene som gjør ære på Thergothon. Disk 1 rommer de mer «standardiserte» versjonene og soundet på de fleste bidragene her ligger nært opptil hva som var forventet, nemlig kvernende og surklende Funeral Doom. Kvaliteten er det lite å utsette på og det er da også denne delen av utgivelsen som faller best i smak. Likevel er det Disk 2 som bør vies oppmerksomhet. Her er det gjort rom for de bandene som leverer mer eksperimentelle tolkninger og mange av dem fremføres med stort hell. Særlig de fire første sporene er solide og viser at Funeral Doom-låter lar seg arrangere til å passe andre uttrykk på en fortreffelig måte. Siden Thergothon kun eksisterte en kort periode og ikke komponerte all verdens med material har Solitude løst det sånn at hver låt blir gjort av to band (bortsett fra Persistence of Mourning som er alene om å gjøre «Dancing in the Realm of Shades»). Det betyr at både Evoken og Astral Sleep, for eksempel, covrer «Yet the Watchers Guard». Noe som igjen gir den kostelige opplevelsen av å direkte sammenligne de ulike tolkningene. Det er dritrått å først høre Worship sin versjon av sporet «Evoken» for deretter å sette på Nojda sin versjon, som er totalt annerledes. Av de 17 bidragene er det bare tre som får tommel ned, mens fem av bidragene er helt på det jevne. Absolutt en utgivelse som bør sjekkes ut og skjønt bookleten kunne vært enda mer forseggjort med diverse opplysninger, kommer igrunn Solitude godt i fra det. PS. Om noen skulle lure på hvordan de ulike nasjonalitetene er representert, kan jeg opplyse om at det er fire band fra både USA og Finland, tre band fra Russland og to band fra UK. Nederland, Australia, Canada og Tyskland har med ett band hver.

Hm, that was right idea to do this Tribute I think! All of us are know that THERGOTHON was and is and will be most influential funeral doom metal band ever, and this little step to pay tribute to them is great. As always, when Tributes created there are many bands which music is not into same style with bands for Tribute, but in any way they got some influence from them too. And same is with this case. The bands from various countries throwing out lazy thoughts and did cover versions of beloved band. In our case here are next metal bands/projects: ASUNDER (USA), INTER ARBORES (Russia), OFFICIUM TRISTE (The Netherlands), AARNI (Finland), EVOKEN (USA), ASTRAL SLEEP (Finland), IMINDAIN (England), KROHM (USA), COLOSSEUM (Finland), OTZEPENEVSHIYE (Russia), MOURNFUL CONGREGATION (Australia), AXIS OF ADVANCE (Canada), WORSHIP (Germany), NOJDA (Russia), UMBRA NIHIL (Finland), SINGULTUS (United Kingdom), PERSISTENCE IN MOURNING (USA)… All the bands did decent job, it’s pretty good shown if we’ll look into quality of records and quality of music at all, all made professionally and interesting. No sense to describe how each band played song, so just if you like THERGOTHON too, this two CD edition is worth for your attention!
