Ea’s Au Ellai is a great CD to pull out every few months for a gigantic slab of emotional funeral doom. The three tracks on this full-length are rife with beautiful, sad melodies that are woven together to make the album a thematic experience where the songs are parts of the greater construction of the whole.

The music, whose most poignant parts come from clean piano tones, weaves a mood in which the compositions take their time; indeed, for being heavy, oppressive music, Au Ellai has a sense of relaxation to it, where the music does not seem forced or trite. The material moves slowly yet poignantly through fields of melody and ambience with something like symphonic grace. The main vocals, low, buttery growls, sit in excellently with the music, acting as another instrument in the overall texture. Sometimes clean female ambient vocals are used, and again, as well-implemented textures.

Au Ellai is not an album to listen to everyday, as the heavy, deliberate, thematic nature of its material can become stale with over-familiarity. However, dust it off periodically for a renewed dose melancholic wonder.

Rispetto ai precedenti due lavori questo cult act americano allegerisce il sound a favore di atmosfere messianiche, sacrali, ma ariose e melodiche, e concede più spazio alla chitarra ora più presente e funzionale alle composizioni. Sullo sfondo, invece, sempre le tastiere a dettare tempi e modi dei tre brani che si dilatano a più non posso senza cedere mai d’intensità grazie ad un comparto orchestrale che sferra assalti emozionali ora sinfonici, ora darkeggianti, ora più smaccatamente liturgici. Un percorso evolutivo che man mano prende forma e si discosta lentamente dai canoni funeral, quest’ultimo ormai presente ancora e soltanto espressamente nelle ritmiche rallentatissime e mortifere, e solo di striscio nell’incedere “cerimoniale” imposto dai tasti d’avorio. Ad ogni modo in “Au Ellai” si respira, i suoni lasciano intravedere ampi spiragli, e la vena sperimentale si fa sentire lungo tutta l’ora di un disco che emana bagliori mistici, misteriosi, che probabilmente fara storcere il naso ai fondamentalisti del genere, a chi ha apprezzato visceralmente le prime opere. Gli EA guardano avanti, provano ad andare oltre mettendosi sempre in gioco pur esprimendosi in ambiti essenzialmente “estremi”. Probabile perderenno qualche fan, come probabile ne acquisteranno di nuovi: sintomo che la band ha creato qualcosa di veramente interessante.

Un funerale diverso dal solito.

I missed the opportunity to review this album last issue, even though it’s last year’s release, but felt it would be a damn shame not to review this one. First thing I will say is: TWENTY THREE MINUTE SONG… Has that scared you off? ‘Aullu Eina’opens the disc right off the bat with BEAUTIFUL lead guitar work. The amazing ambient synths accompanying this album shows me that were Ea ever to become a pure ambient styled band, they would STILL be amazing. You’ve got TONS of beautiful atmosphere all over the disc. Heavenly synth chanted vocals, and even some female sung vocals on this album! The emotional content of this one track alone is overwhelming. Right around the 11 minute mark, solo synth landscapes add a small break. The death metal styled vocals are still harsh, and rarely pushed into the foreground so they don’t distract from the amazing atmosphere. That being said, the last few minutes of this song got weird. Consisting of simply bell, synth and piano notes, the darker instrumentation was a bit unsettling. Then they suddenly get a darker and heavier vibe which was indeed odd. Still, 20 – 21 minutes of great music far outweighs that few. Then track 2 (a ten minute piece) ‘Taela Mu’ kicks in, and right off the bat I am not much into the odd solo piano notes and weird ambient synths. This continues on for about 1:41, and then once the heavier guitar work comes in, things are MUCH better. But damn, that guitar sounds familiar! Why yes, it’s the EXACT SAME RIFF PATTERN that was found on track one, only expanded and lengthened (time wise) a bit. From 5 minutes on, however, this becomes a VERY different track. Nice piano layers suddenly become more complicated and comprised of more than just one note hits. The drums are probably utilized in a more complex fashion, with the cymbals being loud and used more. It’s another good track, however the bit near the end of the track gets weird once again. It seems ot be those “haunting” and dark low register piano notes again. CD ender ‘Nia Saeli A Taitalae’ is an 18 minute piece, and probably contains the most solo synth work on the disc, creating some diverse and amazing ambient moments, even to end the track rather dynamically. And there’s TONS of that amazing high end lead guitar notation, though once again you’re going to hear the SAME guitar notes that graced tracks one and two. Despite that repetition of patterns, it DOES NOT make up the bulk of material on the last two tracks, and I think is used as highlight material. My guess is since the tracks flow together without periods of silence (LOVE the synth “violin” pieces that start the final track, which flowed nicely from the previous piece), this could be taken as one long 51 minute work of art, split into three “songs.” Despite the few flaws, Ea continues to create beautiful works of art, some saying this album is more “accessible” than their previous release. In any case, the scoring unfortunately works out to “II” being the better album simply due to this album containing a bit more “undigestable” material. The fact remains that Ea has created another genre defying masterpiece of funereal doom/death, an album that deserves every high mark it gets.

Having already downed two of Ea’s albums like an anti-depressant horse pill, we move on to the third. At this point, it seems you’ve been popping this one too many times. Au Elai has a slightly different approach, but the same vastness, stress on same. The vocals rumble on again and the drums occasionally interject with some rapid kicks. The symphonic work is more impressive, but still, onwards to the church we go. This church needs a new organist. The guitars have less of a focus as in II and more drive than Ea Taesse, but it’s very clear by this release that funeral doom is not an easy genre. Out with the rawness, and in with the, well, the same fucking thing as before. As the music trudges along, you can’t help but feel you heard this the first two times, and you probably did.

Auf dem dritten Album der mysteriösen EA aus Russland
behält die Grabesstimmung die eiserne Oberhand: Selbst
unaufhaltsam zerstörerisch sich ihren Weg bahnende
Lava verströmt mehr Leben als der finstere Doom Metal,
in welchem angeblich Botschaften vergangener Kulturen
transportiert werden. Leider schaufelt sich die Band damit
ihr eigenes Grab, wenn auch handwerklich geschickt: Die
drei überlangen Lieder wirken zu konstruiert, der Darbietung
mangelt es schlicht an Leidenschaft, auflockernde Elemente
wie Keyboard-Chor, Piano, Glockenspiel und Gitarren-Solo
sind gut hörbar, verleihen „Au Èlla“ jedoch weder Tiefgang
noch echte Abwechslung. Wie am sprichwörtlichen
Reißbrett entworfen, schleppt sich die Musik träge dahin,
nur im dritten Lied ‘Nia Saeli A Taitalae’ zügelt die naive
Klaviermelodie spöttisch am dunklen Klanggewand. Wer
dem Funeral Doom noch nicht näher begegnet ist, den mag
EA mitsamt der dräuenden Weltuntergangsstimmung sicher
faszinieren. Wer solcherlei Musik nicht erst seit gestern hört,
der mag sich nach einer Weile beim Gähnen ertappen.

Ecouter un album d’Ea, c’est un peu comme rentrer chez soi après une dure journée. On retrouve enfin un univers qui nous ressemble, un univers connu dans lequel on se sent bien. L’univers du groupe est de ces univers car, même si cette musique nous est inconnue, le groupe arrive à nous mettre à l’aise avec des mélodies apaisantes.

Au Ellai arrive toujours avec autant de mystère autour de ces auteurs. Qui sont-ils ? Ce troisième opus est-il le dernier du groupe ? Car en effet, le concept d’Ea est organisé autour d’un triptyque formé d’Ea Taesse, de II et aujourd’hui, d’Au Ellai.

La grande caractéristique de la musique d’Ea dans cet album est la mélodie. Tantôt mélancolique, tantôt apaisante, cette mélodie laisse libre court à votre imagination. Elle s’insinue dans tout votre être, posant une main amicale sur votre épaule pour vous réconforter et en vous murmurant de la suivre. Cette mélodie, si réelle et si sensible, est une véritable entité dans la musique d’Ea.

Cette musique n’a rien de révolutionnaire, ce qui ne veut pas dire que l’expérience n’est pas unique. En effet, les parties claviers très aériennes, les intrusions de la voix gutturale rares mais intenses et les complaintes à la guitare sont extrêmement bien pensées et naturelles. Certains passages plus oppressants se répètent dans les trois morceaux d’Au Ellai, tel un fil d’Ariane pour nous guider dans le monde d’Ea. Ce monde est très vaste, possède de multiples facettes et couleurs et est maîtrisé de mains de maîtres. Les parties rythmiques et plus puissantes côtoient les parties atmosphériques et aériennes avec beaucoup de doigté. Chaque partie possède son importance, son message et sa volonté.

Cet album est pour moi une véritable expérience. On retrouve des touches de groupes comme Shape of Despair, mais il est impossible de crier au plagiat tant Au Ellai est unique et magnifique. Bien sûr, le groupe ne se renouvelle pas car, même si cet opus est plus aérien que les autres albums, le voyage est le même. Et c’est en cela que les trois albums se lient puisque le voyage n’est pas le même, il se poursuit, tout simplement.

Est-ce que ce voyage se termine avec ce troisième album ou est-ce juste une pause pour reprendre son souffle ? Seul l’avenir nous le dira. En ce qui me concerne, ce ne sera qu’une pause, une pause magnifique dans ma journée, une rencontre irréelle avec cette créature faite de cordes (vocales et métalliques), de touches et de cymbales. Cet être venu me chercher pour effectuer un grand et long voyage dans cet univers stupéfiant, un monde fait de notre imagination.

Стыдно признаться, но предыдущие два альбома таинственной группы EA прошли мимо меня, так что, набивая эти строки, буду оценивать именно этот альбом, а не всю задуманную и реализованную трилогию – хотя после прослушивания «Au Ellai» желание ознакомиться с ней выросло многократно. Как и прежде, музыканты поют свои песни на древнем и забытом языке (скорее всего, выдуманном прямо по ходу создания материала, тем более манера исполнения вокалиста такова, что слов все равно не разобрать, да и буклет угрюмо молчит, отказываясь делиться какой-либо информацией), воссоздавая атмосферу давно исчезнувших цивилизаций. Стиль «Au Ellai» можно охарактеризовать как epic funeral doom, причем стоит оговориться, что от funeral здесь осталась манера подачи материала, но никак не общий настрой музыки. Она, музыка, получилась возвышенной, масштабной и довольно эмоциональной, чему очень способствует разнообразие использованных инструментов и приемов – мелодичные гитарные соло (с которых альбом начинается), положенные на характерный медленный ритм, соседствуя с тяжелым рыком вокалиста, сменяются вспышками размашистого оркестрового гула, атмосферными партиями синтезаторов, грустными переборами пианино, мелодичным перезвоном треугольника, раскатистыми партиями хора. Совмещая все это в монументальной композиции «Aullu Eina», музыканты четко соблюдают гармонию и логику, лишь под конец допуская некоторое «провисание» повествования, когда неторопливое течение музыки отдается на откуп скупым и монотонным риффам. Вторая композиция «Taela Mu» – это симбиоз синтезаторной подложки, меланхоличных клавиш и обступающих их со всех сторон напряженных гитар. Эта вещь становится предтечей «Nia Saeli a Taitalae», вот уж воистину монументальной и эпической вещи, слушая которую, совершаешь путешествие уже не по древним странам и континентам, а по сказочным, фэнтезийным мирам. Заполняющие пространство и соседствующие с тишиной голоса, масштабные мелодии, впечатляющие гитарные соло в конце – все это производит впечатление качественного саундтрека к высокобюджетным странствиям придуманных героев. Подчеркивая кинематографичность своей музыки, Ea делают очень убедительную заявку на самое достойное завершение альбома (и всей трилогии в целом) – многоголосье хора еще долго будет витать вокруг слушателя после окончания диска, не давая ему покинуть созданный музыкантами волшебный мир – его малую частичку запечатлели на обложке, а все остальное каждому придется додумывать самостоятельно в меру своей фантазии. Не удивлюсь, если после этого альбома Ea или исчезнут, так же таинственно, как и появились, или же кардинально сменят направление своего творчества – в данном воплощении они сказали и показали все, что хотели, оставив нас наедине с замечательной музыкой, которую не скоро удастся заменить чем-то новым.

Сочувствующие археологии музыканты из команды с загадочным названием «Ea» выпустили на отечественном лэйбле Solitude prod. свой третий альбом с неудобоваримым названием на тарабарщине. Умело пущенная легенда о древних цивилизациях, некие знания о которых стали доступны музыкантам, сыграла и играет до сих пор неплохую роль, как минимум, банальной рекламы и напускает «тумана», что ни имён, ни паролей, ни явок… Обложка в очередной раз только усугубляет неопределённость, подкидывая лишь образы воображению.

К делу! Третий релиз неплох и, на мой взгляд, сочетает в себе эпичность и монументальность первого альбома, нудность второго и к месту появившийся мелодизм. Всё в звуке и музыке группы узнаваемо, разве что условно-соло-гитара на протяжении всех целых трёх песен не унимается и просто неутомимо поливает пассажами монолит симфонического funeral doom’а, чего раньше не замечалось. Правда, порой это так и тянет назвать «пиликаньем», ввиду весьма скудного мелодизма и используемых приёмов. Партии слишком размеренны (мелодия теряется в тактах гигантской длительности), однотипны и затянуты. Разве, что в третьей композиции эта условная-соло-гитара выдала на гора замечательную импровизацию на несколько минут, чем выгодно скрасила чересчур мерную поступь «древних».

Из трёх релизов для ознакомления с творчеством группы я всё же рекомендовал бы первый шедевральный альбом и, если хочется чего-то ещё, то этот – третий. Могу констатировать, что группа нашла силы, вдохнуть жизнь в своё творчество после более, чем средненького второго альбома. Но, во всём наблюдается самоповтор. Оно и понятно – жанр, в котором творит группа, весьма скуден на музыкальные приёмы. Если не упираться в смакование гудения гитар как таковых, «похоронных» клавишных и пр. фишек, то можно выделить штучное количество действительно ярких и музыкально интересных релизов в данном жанре. И, кстати, на этих пиках творчества, многие из тех немногих групп прекратили своё существование, чем оставили о себе яркие воспоминания. Нет, не пророчу группе Ea завершение творчества, но хочу пожелать, искать и находить музыкальные и околомузыкальные находки, претворять их в жизнь и разумно расширять рамки стиля(ей)! Потенциал у группы, думаю, для этого есть.

Ea. No se trata de la localidad y río en la costa vizcaína con dicho nombre (dato que seguramente desconozcáis) ni de una manera muy común en los castellano-parlantes para animar o tratar de estimular a alguien según la RAE o mucho menos una palabra coloquial usada en la zona de la mancha. Ea son una misteriosa banda de Funeral Doom de desconocida procedencia, aunque por su cercanía con el sello Solitude Productions, a muchos nos hagan pensar que puedan llegar a ser rusos.

“Au Ellai” es el epílogo de esta trilogía que comenzó en 2006 con el debut “Ea Taesse”, seguido el año pasado con “II” y que cierra puertas con este nuevo trabajo editado este mismo año. Francamente es mi primera incursión en esta enigmática y misteriosa banda de Funeral Doom por lo que no soy la persona más indicada para determinar la evolución que han tenido, aunque franca y honestamente Ea se postulen como una banda “más”, dentro de los terrenos más estándares de dicho género.

Este Cd está compuesto por únicamente tres temas, de 23, 10 y 18 minutos, por lo que nos iremos a una duración total de 52 minutos de un Funeral Doom lento, cadencialmente tortuoso, no exento de partes muy ambientales y que me traen a la cabeza a dos bandas principalmente: los primeros trabajos de Shape Of Despair y unas ciertas similitudes con los germanos Ahab. Sin duda a lo largo del álbum el misterio rodea a todos los temas por igual, con buenos arreglos a piano/teclado, hipnóticos y repetitivos bucles que se suceden sin parar decorado con melódicos punteos y una profunda y sempiterna voz gutural (aunque en el primer tema podamos escuchar unos tímidos coros melódicos). No es que sea el material más “original” dentro del estilo, ya que tiran siempre de clichés muy pre-establecidos dentro de este mismo, y a mi gusto la producción carece de un pelín más de graves, fundamental y vital en una banda de Funeral Doom. De todas maneras a los maníacos y degustadores del Funeral Doom en su concepción más clara y concisa, estoy más que seguro que disfrutarán de esta banda.

No tienen digamos ese aura o aroma a banda “especial” dentro del género como otras, aunque se encuentra digamos dentro de una “media” ponderada y se trate al fin y al cabo de material que se deja escuchar, eso sí no bajo cualquier estado de ánimo u hora a lo largo del día. Avisados quedáis.

После выхода в свет этого диска у всех возник вопрос: продолжит ли и дальше свое существование загадочный коллектив EA? Ведь согласно пресс-релизу третий их альбом “Au Ellai” – это завершение трилогии EA, и соответственно может означать либо закрытие проекта, либо появление новой трилогии в будущем. Но вернёмся к их новому детищу “Au Ellai”. На этот раз, как и на дебютной работе, вас снова ждут три длинных эпических funeral doom/ambient трека длинною почти в час, которые вполне могли бы звучать в какой-нибудь часовне вместо церковного органа. Прекрасные мелодии и невероятная атмосфера просто очаровывают, а появляющийся внезапно божественный женский вокал окончательно убеждают в том, что на данный момент это самая лучшая работа в дискографии EA. Будем надеяться, что не последняя…
