Hm, yeah, this stuff is totally new face of Russian S.C.A.L.P… And yes, many changes were… For example line up changes, as well as musicians:). Again for example – A. Kuznetsov has “lost” hair somewhere, he-he, Pavel become much mature man:) etc… And finally musical changes… Hm… to be honest I even couldn’t think if this is SCALP if I’d not know this fact)). Music is into some kind of doom and just metal, with huge modern attitude… I can’t say I like a lot this album, but the music is interesting and even if you’ll not like it a lot since very first listening, you’ll be forced from inside to listen to this CD again))) (same with me). Yes, music on this CD is in some cases slightly original and fresh, but too modern as for me, but of course this isn’t problem, and SCALP is worth for attention of fans who are into both melodic and depressive music, with “life” texts. Also original thing is that musicians mixed many tunes in their music, so I can’t say if this is doom or melodic metal, he-he, look – doom, death, heavy and etc… Such mixture has the place therein nowadays SCALP’ music. Made on very good level and with good atmosphere, and will be good gift for open minded fans into such music.

I have just reviewed the re-release of S. C. A. L. P.’s debut full-length album “Through Eternity”, so I thought it fitting to review this album, their latest full-length. S. C. A. L. P. is a Russian band that started in 1991 and they have released three demos, one single, one compilation and three full-length albums, this being their most recent release. This album has a more Death/Doom Metal vibe to it then the first one. It seems like they have dropped all of their previous Heavy Metal influences. But then moved more into the Death Metal part of the spectrum. There is a lot of brutality and aggression to this album, a lot of faster parts. There are of course a lot of slower more Doom Metal parts on this album, but this time around those parts have a more Gothic feel to them, but not so much that I’m puking my guts out (which I often do when my ears are subjected to the Gothic plague). There is actually a good balance between the faster more aggressive parts and the slower more melancholic and sorrow filled parts. Not a bad album.

Oggi la Russia è la nazione più prolifica in campo doom metal. Devo fare ammissione di ignoranza, non conoscevo gli S.C.A.L.P. prima che giungesse sulla mia scrivania questo Chuzhaya Voina (in realtà il titolo è in caratteri cirillici, devo prender per buona una traduzione trovata su internet… purtroppo l’etichetta non mi ha fornito una scheda di presentazione…), e dire che la band è attiva dal 1991 e ha altri due album alle spalle (Through Eternity del 1997 e Tears And Blood datato 2004). Dal punto di vista musicale i riferimenti sono poco “russi”, scordatevi le atmosfere desolate e oscure dal fascino post atomico che caratterizzano le uscite delle band proveniente da quelle lande. Qui ci troviamo innanzi a un lavoro dal sapore inglese e probabilmente questo dipende dalla data di fondazione del gruppo, nei primi anni novanta spopolavano i gruppi Peaceville, Paradise Lost, Katatatonia e Anathema. Soprattutto questi ultimi sembrano la maggiore fonte d’ispirazione degli S.C.A.L.P., facile rintracciare in questo lavoro l’impronta dei primi lavori dei fratelli Cavanagh. Però i risultati non sono esaltanti, se l’album inizialmente è piacevole con le sue atmosfere malinconiche, a lungo andare diventa troppo monotono. Probabilmente pesa il lungo stop che ha caratterizzato l’attività della band dal 2005 a oggi. Con un po’ di ruggine in meno, sono certo che gli S.C.A.L.P. potranno fare meglio…

Ritorno sulle scene per gli S.C.A.L.P., tra le metal band russe di maggior spessore, i nostri giungono con questo nuovo “Chuzhaya Voina” al terzo full-length, il primo ad essere scritto e cantato completamente in lingua madre. Questa scelta, se da un lato aggiunge un barlume di originalità ai soliti stilemi che vedono trionfare l’idioma albionico su tutti, dall’altro potrebbe pericolosamente chiudere alla band le porte del mercato internazionale.
Prescindendo da ciò, questo nuovo album si pone, dal punto di vista qualitativo, sullo stesso livello dei predecessori , risultando sempre ben suonato e ben composto nonostante il sound dei russi (gothic metal) non brilli per originalità ed innovazione.
“Chuzhaya Voina” ci presenta nove tracce (più una bonus) che portano con se rimandi alla scena gothic metal inglese ed in particolare alle produzioni dei Paradise Lost. Discorso a parte va fatto per il feeling di fondo che pervade l’album tutto, questo si distacca enormemente da quello da quello oscuro della scena inglese in virtù del trasmettere una emozionalità epico/estatica, vera e propria arma vincente di questo album.
Dei pezzi che compongono questa nuova release degli S.C.A.L.P. meritano una citazione: la romantica “Skvoz Stenu”, l’aggressiva title-track e “Teni (Tvoi Mir…)”, brano che con le sue soffuse malinconie è di sicuro l’episodio migliore presente. A parte tali citazioni, l’album si mostra ben bilanciato nel combinare melodia e aggressività ed in particolare è ottimo nel rileggere gli stilemi classici del gothic metal in maniera personale.
Se amate il genere in esame e siete alla ricerca di una band con personalità, “Chuzhaya Voina” non vi deluderà.

E’ veramente sorprendente come, ascoltando di fila due album del medesimo gruppo si possano avere giudizi diametralmente opposti.
Si perché mentre in occasione della ristampa del precedente ‘Through Eternity’ i russi S.C.A.L.P. (che a proposito significa Sense’s Calming At dead’s Lament Places) mi avevano lasciato più che un amaro in bocca, in occasione di questo nuovo album, sempre per la BadMood Man, sono rimasto piacevolmente sorpreso e soddisfatto. E’ vero che fra questi due album ce ne sono altri, ma purtroppo non avendo avuto modo di ascoltarne qualcuno, non ho termini di paragone.
Passando da un goth/death anonimo e misero di ‘Through…’ ad un corposo thrash/death granitico al 100% di questa release, i nostri hanno guadagnato parecchi punti. Laddove la formula sonora era insicura e tremolante, ‘Chuzhaya Voina’ mostra un gruppo altamente esperto e rodato (sicuramente i 12 anni di differenza fra questi due album sono significativi) che francamente non riesco a paragonare a nessun altro gruppo precedentemente ascoltato.
Sembra quasi di ascoltare un altro gruppo. Sembra… A parte le mie precedenti critiche allo stile canoro del cantante Pavel Peristy, tutto il resto è decisamente avvincente, un album che sicuramente può beneficiare di una vita propria e di una longevità superiori alla media delle uscite. Non ho bisogno di aggiungere altro se non che ‘Chuzhaya Voina’ mi ha colpito positivamente.
Un gran bell’album di thrash/death metal maschio e potente dalla Russia. Un gruppo da tenere sotto stretta osservazione.

Als mooi contrast op het tegelijk verschenen debuut ‘Through Eternity’ verschijnt het laatste werk van het Russische S.C.A.L.P., en ja , de band heeft in de loop van de jaren een eigen geluid opgewerkt die wel nog de basis ideeën van weleer bevat maar veel kundiger gespeeld zijn, met meer kracht, passie en power en meer heavy metal dan op het debuut. Wat wel erg jammer is maar misschien niet eens zo onverstandig, is dat de band nu de tien nummers in hun moerstaal zingt. Dit komt de band best ten goede maar het bemoeilijkt sterk het doorbladeren van het booklet. Moedertje Rusland zou zich omdraaien in haar communistisch graf als ze mijn gevloek zou horen! Maar dat terzijde. Stevige rock en metal doom met een uitstekende productie, een gemoderniseerde, betere en verfijndere samensmelting van ideeën maar toch te zwak om meer dan eenmaal te luisteren. Niet echt een blijvertje.

Na das nenne ich doch mal eine Entwicklung! Nachdem ich mich mit dem recht durchschnittlichen Debütalbum “Through Eternity” auseinandergesetzt hatte, bin ich vom aktuellen Album “Chuzhaya Voina” der Russen S.C.A.L.P. doch positiv überrascht.
Auch heute sind noch die Einflüsse wie die alten TIAMAT deutlich hörbar, doch mittlerweile zeigt sich das Songwriting deutlich gereift, wirkt die Musik erwachsener. Der Kontrast ist schon prägnant. Die aktuellen Stücke wirken untereinander variabler, in sich selbst kompakter, kommen besser auf den Punkt. Nicht ganz alltäglich und erst einmal etwas exotisch wirken die russischen Texte, aber man gewöhnt sich doch schnell daran. Auffallend ist auch, dass das neue Album durchgehend härter, aggressiver, energischer, frischer und moderner ist, die atmosphärische Komponente wurde etwas zurückgeschraubt. Auch der Anteil an Heavy Metal wurde weiter ausgebaut. Wirklich herausragend sind die starken, packenden Hooklines. Auch der Gesang ist nun deutlich besser, wärmer, charismatischer, kraftvoller. Die effektiven Riffs sind nicht mehr ganz so traurig, dafür deutlich fetter. Und einige Leads versprühen puren Rock’n'Roll! S.C.A.L.P. drücken mittlerweile auch deutlich häufiger aufs Gaspedal. Doom Metal ist das sicherlich nicht mehr, eher moderner Dark Metal, wenngleich durchaus noch einige Elemente des Dooms enthalten sind. Es fehlen jetzt lediglich nur noch einige absolute Übersongs, um zu den großen Könnern aufzuschließen.

Az orosz S.C.A.L.P. 1991-ben alakult Orel városában. Korábban három demó és az írás tárgyát képező “Chuzhaya Voina” lemezzel együtt három nagylemez készült el a banda égisze alatt. Mivel a zenekarral kapcsolatos információim eléggé hiányosak voltak, amikor a lemezt a lejátszómba tettem, így előítéletektől mentesen vágtam neki a “Chuzhaya Voina” meghallgatásának.
Őszintén szólva, fogalmam sem volt, hogy mit várhatok ettől a zenekartól. A borítót, amikor a kezembe vettem, barnás-sárgás színvilága egy kicsit melankolikus metal anyag illusztrációnak tudtam elképzelni – az intróig nem is tévedtem sokat. Kellemes, könnyed nyitány vezeti fel az albumot a “Rassvet” című dal formájában. Modern megközelítésű, de még mindig lazább hangszerelésű dal a másodikként elhangzó “Skvoz Stenu”, kicsit nyersebb, direktebb vokálokkal, orosz nyelven. Ez utóbbi jellemző az egész albumot végigkíséri, ám általam kultivált orosz zenekarokkal ellentétben itt zavaró a nyelvezet, bár ez lehet, hogy inkább az én beidegződésem, hogy ehhez a zenéhez nem tudom elképzelni az orosz nyelvet. Pavel Peristy énekes hangja gyakran a Tiamatos Edlund-éval rokon (Clouds korszak), ami számomra kifejezetten pozitívum, mivel kedvelem a Tiamat ezen időszakát. A tiszta ének emellett kissé bizonytalan a kiállásoknál. A csapatban rejlő technikai tudás már az album első felében hallottak alapján megkérdőjelezhetetlen, azonban folyamatosan azt érzem, hogy ezt a zenében is folyamatosan bizonyítgatni szeretnék, és ez gyakran a befogadhatóság rovására megy, szerintem túlságosan öncélúak ezek a megoldások. Az album szűk háromnegyed órája eléggé színes, rengeteg stílus jegyeit magában hordozza. Az elszállósabb, rockosabb témáktól kezdve a tradicionális doom jellegű megoldásokon át thrashesebb, csapkodósabb megoldásokkal is találkozhatunk. Nem állítom, hogy ebből nem jöhet ki jól a zenekar, de a S.C.A.L.P.-nak ez nem sikerült maradéktalanul. Tény, hogy rengeteg jó téma van, de ezeket kicsiny kohézió tartja össze, ez pedig szerintem legfőképp az öncélúságból adódik.
Vannak ám emlékezetesebb pillanatok is, ezek legtöbbször a melankolikusabb témákban keresendők: a “Teni (Tvoi Mir…)” című dal például a Lake Of Tears “Forever Autumn” anyagára emlékeztet, jól megírt dallamaival a lemez egyik legjobbja. Ha ki kellene emelnem az albumról még egyéb szerzeményt, ami mindenképpen megérdemli a figyelmet, az a “Kto” című darab, ami lassú, súlyos középtempójával, kiabálósabb vokáljaival remekül összerakott dal. Itt kicsit a Paradise Lost “Shades Of God” és “Gothic” lemezei is felvillantak az emlékezetemben.
A hangzással nem vagyok igazán elégedett. Kissé tompának érzem, ami főleg a modernebb megközelítésű dalok esetében domborodik ki, a lazább, rockosabb témák esetében nem feltűnő. Összességében igen vegyes érzéseim vannak a “Chuzhaya Voina” albummal kapcsolatban. A jó pillanatok sajnos nem mentik meg egyértelműen a kiadványt, talán egyszerűbb lenne, ha a jelenlegitől egységesebb zenei világgal próbálkozna a zenekar a későbbiekben. Így viszont marad a kevésbé kedvező pontszám. Talán majd legközelebb.

ENGLISH VERSION:
The Russian S.C.A.L.P. was founded in 1991 in the city of Orel. They released three albums consists of three demos and “Chuzhaya Voina” which is the subject of this review. Since my information of the band was quite incomplete, I was listening to them without any prejudice.
To be honest, I’ve had no idea what could I expect from the band. The covers brownie-yellowish color had melancholic metal feeling – I wasn’t mistaken until the intro. A nice, fluent opening introduces the album in the form of the track “Rassvet”. The second track “Skvoz Stenu” is quite a modern, but loosely arranged one with raw, direct vocals in Russian. This last characteristic follows through the complete album, but contrary to the other Russian bands I like, the language can be disturbing here, although this can be only my opinion that I couldn’t imagine the Russian language to this music. The voice of Pavel Peristy can be matched with the voice of Edlund from Tiamat (Clouds era), which is a positive fact for me, for I liked this era of Tiamat. The clear voice however is a bit uncertain at the bridges. The technical mastery of the band is undoubted, but sometimes I always felt that they wish to prove this all along the album which is at the expense of reception; my opinion is that these solutions are rather having an end in itself. The almost 45 minutes of the album is quite colorful, it bears the marks of many genres. We can find rock themes, traditional doom solutions and trash themes as well. I don’t state that these things can’t result in a good band, but don’t fully resulted in S.C.A.L.P. It is a fact however, that there are many good themes, but those are kept together with a little cohesion which issues from the above mentioned having an end in itself.
There are memorable moments by the way, which can be found in the melancholic themes: eg. the track “Teni (Tvoi Mir…)” reminds me of Lake of Tears’ “Forever Autumn”, with its well composed melodies it became the best track of the album. If I had to call the attention to one more track, it would have been “Kto” with its slow, heavy tempo, shouting vocal. It reminded me a bit of Paradise Lost’s “Shades of God” and Gothic.
I’m not impressed by the sound. I feel it a bit blunt which swells out at the modern tracks, it isn’t conspicuous at the rock themes. To summarize it I have mixed feelings with “Chuzhaya Voina”. Unfortunately the good moments don’t save the release; perhaps it would be simpler for the band to try a different, more unified sound from the current. For now I can give this score. Perhaps next time.

Chuzhaya Voina is the title of this Russians’ new offering. It is hard to judge a music that you don’t understand a single word of, as both the lyrics and the whole booklet is written entirely in their native Russian. In addition to this there’s no info sheet accompanying this release.
However, I can tell you that they’ve released a debut Through Eternity some years ago. As far as I can understand from majority of my fellow colleagues it was a killer debut. What I can tell you with certainty is that Chuzhaya Voina is a solid piece of doom/down-tempo metal and respectful follow-up, but with very little heavy influences. Some would call it simply boring; others might find it interesting, unique and even exotic. I guess I’m somewhere in the middle, as I miss more heavier tunes and moods, but the fact that they have decided to sing in Russian is a plus as it adds this mystery and diversity that most doom fans would appreciate. It is very melancholic and depressive record but with some very nice melodies and fine arrangement of ideas.
S.C.A.L.P. with Chuzhaya Voina show that they are capable of creating yet another release where they are not afraid to change their sound and try something new and ‘dangerous’. Meanwhile; I guess this record can be highly recommended only for die-hard doom metal fans.

Первоначально прослушав пластинку, можно сказать фоном, я не знал, что написать, и оставил релиз пылиться на полке какое-то время. Трудно было подобрать слова, потому что отсутствовали ясные образы, все было в одной куче. Но это был первый раз. До этого, читая рецензии моего коллеги Esoteric’а на предыдущие диски группы, я знал, что все ну никак не может быть так просто. S.C.A.L.P, старейшая российская метал формация, не так уж и проста. Команда довольно опытная, интеллектуальная, следовательно, требуется более вдумчивое и детальное рассмотрение, а не поверхностное прослушивание. Немаловажным фактором является и настроение. Я бы лично посоветовал слушать команду, находясь в состоянии легкой грусти и меланхолии. Это именно тот случай, когда можно найти резонанс, использую в качестве возбудителя музыку. Определить стиль материала весьма проблематично. В большинстве своем жесткие риффы напоминают heavy, плотно сплавленный с doom и небольшим количеством death metal. Хитовые вещи на работе присутствуют, но так много как хотелось бы. Нужно отдать должное, команде удалось сформировать свое звучание. Но несмотря на все это, то ли из-за записи, то ли из-за самого материала звучит музыка пресновато, особенно под конец. Все-таки стаж обязывает записываться на ступеньку повыше. Прежде чем прослушать альбом настоятельно рекомендую ознакомиться с оформлением и текстами. Русскоязычные тексты являются приятным исключением среди того, что я привык наблюдать в буклетах. Отличная символичная лирика очень подходит музыке и возбуждает соответственные мысли. Для меня главной темой , судя даже по названию диска, является тема никчемности современных войн. Нет, не показать ужасы, а именно акцентировать внимание на безысходности людей, оказавшихся по принуждению под перекрестным огнем, и бессмысленность их страданий, а чаще их миссии. Если бы еще не столь частое использование определенных слов-клише, таких как «вены», лирика могла бы пол. Оформление простое, но зато аккуратное Работа зрелая, но дожать реализацию, я считаю, не получилось, как в композиционном, так и техническом плане.

Так получилось, что «Чужая Война» стал всего третьим полнометражным альбомом за без малого двадцатилетнюю историю S.C.A.L.P. И первым релизом, который группа выпустила без Евгения Рыженка, потерю которого музыканты переживают до сих пор. Но жизнь продолжается, и, пусть, похоже, и не без некоторого колебания, но группа продолжила свою деятельность под старым названием. И тут вольно или невольно, появляются ассоциации с одной из самых известных команд в истории русского хэви-метал ЧЕРНЫМ ОБЕЛИСКОМ. А стоит зазвучать музыке, как эти ассоциации не просто появляются, но и прочно укореняются в сознании. Понятно, что лишившись голоса Рыженка, как одной из главных составляющих своего саунда, Павлу Перистому, взявшему на себя роль вокалиста, и его соратникам, пришлось искать для своего творчества какие-то новые формы, но, признаюсь честно, то, в каком направлении двинулся S.C.A.L.P. в новой для себя эпохе, стало для меня неожиданностью. От былого атмосферного дума остались лишь некоторые фрагменты, которые вписаны теперь в жесткое современное трэш-металлическое звучание, в котором явственно прослеживаются нотки, характерные для старого (еще Крупновского ОБЕЛИСКА). Если немного утрировать, то «Чужая Война» выглядит как «Стена» (или даже «Цветы Зла»), записанные ФАКТОРОМ СТРАХА. Понятно, что как в любых сравнениях, здесь есть изрядная доля натянутости, но выпуклые, отрывистые риффы и простые, рубленые мелодии в сочетании с тембром голоса Павла вызывают в сознании именно такую картину. Сформировавшись как музыканты в начале 90-х годов, S.C.A.L.P. используют тенденции modern-thrash metal как составную часть своего нового саунда, но не как его основу. В результате получается довольно специфичное блюдо, которое может прийтись по вкусу как сторонникам old school, так и любителям современного звука. Впрочем, в равной степени те и другие могут эту пластинку и не принять. Она словно бы застыла на перекрестке между прошлым и будущим, не решаясь сделать шаг ни в одну, ни в другую сторону, пытаясь на ощупь определить правильное направление. Такие потенциальные хиты, как «Сквозь стену», «Солнце Мертвых» или баллада «Тени», вроде бы показывают, что группа на верном пути, но… В случае со S.C.A.L.P. никогда нельзя быть ни в чем уверенным: группа может опять замолчать на несколько лет, чтобы потом вернуться с неузнаваемым имиджем. Ну а пока «Чужая Война» для тех, кто знаком был с творчеством группы много лет, воспринимается несколько непривычно.

Одновременно с переизданием на BadMoodMan Music первого альбома группы “Through Eternity” силами музыкантов при дистрибутивной поддержке сразу трех российских лейблов (BadMoodMan Music, Wroth Emitter и Fantazone Sound Inc) выпущен новый, третий альбом группы “Чужая Война”, запись которого была завершена еще весной 2008 года. Если вкратце охарактеризовать записи S.C.A.L.P., получится следующее: ранние демки (1994-1995) – brutal death и death/doom; первый альбом “Through Eternity” (1997) -dark metal; “Tears And Blood” (1999) – doom metal. Новый материал, строго говоря, мало общего имеет с doom metal – в его основе лежит жесткая смесь modern/thrash metal (вокал Перистого чем-то напоминает голос Анатолия Крупнова) с небольшими мелодичными вкраплениями, которые отчасти напоминают о былых думовых деньках. Плюс ко всему S.C.A.L.P. перешли к русскоязычной лирике. Такие серьезные изменения вполне понятны – ведь столько времени прошло (хотя последний трек, записанный еще в 2002 году уже показал серьезные изменения в звучании группы), сменился фронт-мен, изменились ориентиры самих музыкантов. Так что любителей старого S.C.A.L.P.а может постигнуть разочарование, но те, кто открыты для нового звука найдут и приятные моменты, ведь альбом выполнен на уровне – профессионализм музыкантов и качество записи вопросов не вызывает. В оформлении альбома использовалась золотая рабочая поверхность диска и пит-арт.

Одна из старейших российских думовых команд (существует с 1991 года) разродилась по весне новым своим, третьим по счету, альбомом, напрочь ломая представления о том, что главное время года для дум-металлеров – осень. Впрочем, судя по материалу «Чужой войны», выход этого альбома именно весной воспринимается весьма символично. Диск получился… странным. Необычным. Неожиданным. Сложным для восприятия. Экспериментальным. Интересным. Благословенные времена меланхоличного и атмосферного дум-дэта остались в далеком прошлом – для группы это, похоже, уже пройденный этап. Обновлено-весенняя «Чужая война» встречает слушателя русскоязычной лирикой, сложно воспринимаемыми с первого раза ритмическими рисунками, жестким качем и весьма ощутимой агрессией: выведенная на передний план ритм-секция играет роль основного стержня-тарана. Стилистические границы нынешнего творчества S.C.A.L.P. сильно размыты, вмещая в себя – и довольно успешно, надо сказать, – и хэви, и дум, и дэт, и модерн-метал, и трэш, и черти что еще: за 44 минуты «скальпы» успели много что сказать. Правда, нынешняя музыка группы стала, на мой взгляд, менее глубокой, но более разнообразной и эклектичной – а хорошо это или плохо, пусть каждый решит для себя сам. Совершенно не понравился блеклый вокал Павла Перистого (он заменил на посту фронтмена трагически погибшего в 2004-м Евгения Рыженка) – сиплые надрывные завывания здорово разрушают хрупкую и с таким трудом выстраиваемую атмосферу думовых корней. В качестве бонуса на альбоме имеется композиция “The Last” с самопального двухпесенного сингла 2003-го года, неплохо вписывающаяся в общую картину «Чужой войны» (невзирая на английскую лирику). В общем, если альбом хоть чем-то зацепит с первого раза – не поленитесь, потратьте время на дальнейшие пару-тройку прослушиваний: подозреваю, что он таит в себе немало субъективно воспринимаемых нюансов, способных открыться только вам.

Metal Archivesin mukaan tämä jo vuonna 1991 perustettu venäläisyhtye aloitti levytysuransa nauhoittamalla vuoden 1994 demolleen parin oman biisin lisäksi covervedot Napalm Deathilta ja Bad Religionilta. Sittemmin tyylisuunta on muuttunut jokseenkin täydellisesti. Aiemmin tänä vuonna julkaistu Chuzhaya Voina on nimittäin deathdoomin sekaista melodista metallia. Pääosin keskitempoista sellaista.
S.C.A.L.P.:in musiikki on siinä rajalla, onko se itäeurooppalaisella tavalla positiivisen hellyttävää ja aidon linjatonta vai yksinkertaisesti kyvytöntä. Vaikka mistään mestariteoksesta ei voida puhua, sanoisin, että Chuzhaya Voina on aitoa ja ajoittain mielenkiintoistakin musiikkia. Levyltä huokuu selkeä omaehtoisuuden tuntu, eivätkä kaikki S.C.A.L.P.:in ratkaisut länsimaisiin metallikonventioihin kalibroiduille korville kuulosta ensi alkuun lainkaan toimivilta. Varsinaisen eksoottista ei bändin musiikki ole paitsi ehkä laulukielen osalta, mutta monin paikoin yhtyeen metalli tulee ikään kuin hieman epätavanomaisen suodattimen läpi.
Kieltämättä tämä tekee S.C.A.L.P.:in muutoin hivenen horjuvasta, linjattomuuteen taipuvasta ja paikoin perusideoiltaan jopa tavanomaisesta musiikista ainakin näennäisen kiinnostavaa. Esimerkiksi Teni (Tvoi Mir…) -biisin voimakkaasti venäläisen kuuloiset melodiat tuntuisivat toimivan useammankin kuuntelukerran jälkeen mainiosti, kun taas suuri osa levyn materiaalista hahmottuu nopeasti keskinkertaiseksi. Vaikkapa Zhazhdan laulujen heittäytyvyydessä olisi joka tapauksessa opittavaa yhdelle jos toisellekin yhtyeelle. Onkin mukava kuulla venäläisen Solitude Productionsin suunnalta (BadMoodMan on SP:n alamerkki) kerrankin jotain edes etäisesti “kotimaista”, eikä aina vain toinen toistaan kehnompia deathdoom-kopioita.

Met de re-release van Through Eternity (1997), het eerste album van deze Russen, weten we nu hoe de band in 1997 geklonken heeft. De relevantie van die heruitgave is mij geheel onduidelijk maar het heeft mij in ieder geval op de hoede gemaakt voor ander/nieuw materiaal van deze band.
Dit Chuzhaya Voina is weliswaar beter dan het album uit 1997 maar ook dit is van een wel heel bedenkelijk niveau. De band heeft eigenlijk geen extreme muzikale koerswijzigingen doorgevoerd en klinkt nog steeds als een smeltkroes van allerlei stijlen waarbij doom metal nog steeds de boventoon voert. Het titelnummer, bijvoorbeeld, heeft echter ook meerdere snellere thrash metal passages die het luistergemak niet echt bevorderen – integendeel. Vergelijkingen zijn dan ook moeilijk te maken. Misschien dat een band als The Blood Divine (van ex-Anathema zanger Darren White) er een beetje bij in de buurt komt. Of eigenlijk, andersom natuurlijk, want het lijkt me onnodig om te vermelden dat S.C.A.L.P. dit niveau bij lange na niet haalt. Als ik toch een pluspunt moet noemen dan is dat de taalkeuze, nu ze in hun moederstaal zingen stoort de slechte beheersing van de Engelse taal in ieder geval niet meer en zijn we gelijk van dat verschrikkelijke accent af.

S.C.A.L.P. to rosyjski zespół grający doom metal z wpływami, który zapewne w Polsce jest znany nieco starszym sympatykom tego gatunku. Dokładnie w roku 1997 ukazała się płyta „Through Eternity”, która dotarła w kilka miejsc w naszym kraju. Swoją drogą, niedawno materiał ten doczekał się reedycji nakładem BadMoodMan Music. I właśnie ta wytwórnia wydała jeszcze całkowicie premierowy album kapeli pt. „Chuzhaya Voina”. Mijające lata, jak się okazuje, nie miały większego wpływu na tę grupę. Bowiem nowa muzyka Rosjan zdecydowanie ma w sobie ducha czasów minionych. No, może tylko S.C.A.L.P. znacząco oddalił się od heavy metalowych wpływów, których na debiucie było więcej. Na najnowszym krążku takim echem jest tylko ostatni bonusowy utwór „The Last”, szczególny także dlatego, iż został zaśpiewany po angielsku. Tak, tak, jest to ewenement. O ile Pavel dawniej dawniej śpiewał „po europejsku” (prawdę mówiąc, z nie najlepszym efektem), o tyle na „Chuzhaya Voina” teksty są w ojczystym języku chłopków. Poza tym S.C.A.L.P. balansuje na granicy… po prostu melodyjnego metalu (bowiem jednak nie jest to typowy doom/death), z klawiszami, ożywionego w rytmicznych tempach. I to ostatnie akurat się nie zmieniło, bo twórczość Rosjan nigdy nie była posępna, miała w sobie takiego optymistycznego, ożywionego ducha. Podobieństwa do staroci są jeszcze zauważalne w aranżacjach, no i oczywiście w brzmieniu, które „pilnuje”, żeby muzyka była cięższa i mroczniejsza. Jeśli chodzi o konkretne fragmenty wydawnictwa, kompozycja tytułowa to w sumie balladka, w „Skvoz Stenu” słyszymy chwilami toporne „blasty”, zaś gitary mogą przywodzic na myśl TOOLa, „Teni (Tvoi Mir…)” to znowuż taka pieśń, w „Zhazhda” i „Kto” wokal jest bardziej zaangażowany, kreowany na dramatyczny (poza tym generalnie jest to brzydki, „niedorobiony” growl, ale z czasem staje się znośny, można się do niego przyzwyczaić). Podsumowując, pewnie powrót S.C.A.L.P. nie był potrzebny fanom doom metalu na świecie, ale przecież tyle kapel reaktywuje się w dzisiejszych czasach, że nic już nie dziwi i pojęcie przesytu jest względne. „Chuzhaya Voina” nie jest płytą, która przywróci (a właściwie przysporzy blasku tej grupie), ale pewnie troszkę osób po nią sięgnie, pomimo paru niedociągnięć…

Este que tenemos aquí es el tercer trabajo de esta banda rusa de nombre conformado en siglas y cuyo significado, por mera curiosidad, al parecer se corresponde con “Sense’s Calming At Dead’s Lament Places”. Desde su creación en 1991 hasta la grabación del que fuera su primer trabajo de larga duración ‘Through Eternity’ en 1997 vieron la luz tres demos que plasman los inicios deathmetaleros de la banda, si bien un cambio de estilo marca la nueva dirección con la que continúan su trayectoria.
La mención de este trabajo del 97 no es sólo casual, ya que el actual ‘Chuzhaya Voina’ viene precedido de una reedición de este primer disco, lo que además de constituir una oportunidad de hacerse con él, sirve como referencia para ver más o menos cual ha sido la evolución de la banda.
Teniendo esto en cuenta y después de la escucha de ambos, en realidad se podría decir que en sí apenas ha cambiado su rumbo, aunque desde luego pueden apreciar ciertas variaciones, si bien lo que más salta a la vista es que en general todo suena bastante más maduro y sólido. Al igual que en su disco de debut, aquí también se encuentra esa extraña mezcla de varios estilos que da como resultado un Metal difícil de clasificar, a caballo entre el Gótico, el Doom y el Heavy mayormente. Si hay algo que no ha variado es que se trata de canciones de tempo más bien tirando a lento, pero tampoco sin descartar salirse de cuando en cuando de este molde, tanto hacia un lado, como hacia otro. Todo el disco viene envuelto en un halo melódico y en cierto modo triste y oscuro, siguiendo más o menos en esa línea combinada de estilos, eso si, de mejor composición, más enérgico, y por supuesto más actual. La esencia Doom no se ha perdido pero, en contraste con su primer trabajo, los elementos de corte Heavy ganan algo en intensidad mientras que el componente ambiental se reduce bastante.
Otra característica destacable que hay que mencionar es que en esta ocasión han cambiado el idioma pasándose al de su tierra natal tanto en letras como en libreto… vamos… en todo, lo que da un punto algo exótico y algo raro a este trabajo si bien tampoco ayuda mucho a la hora de extraer algunos datos.
Sea como sea, lo cierto es que es muy posible que para todo aquel que no aprecie un estilo de Metal con tendencia Doom (aunque mezclado) este disco resulte un tanto aburrido al poco de empezar a escucharlo. Con todo, no es un mal trabajo y tiene algunas cosillas interesantes, así que para aquel que se encuadre un poco más en estos términos quizás no estaría de más probar a ver que tal.

К великому сожалению, группа S.C.A.L.P., не только не отошла окончательно, вместе со своим возрождением, от своего названия (имею в виду корней в дэте), но и нашла возможность, сделав перерыв на создание коллектива Инталия, вернуть все прошлое в настоящее, потеряв чувство стиля и испортив зародившееся восхищение от своего дебютного альбома.
На новом альбоме новособранного коллектива, который распространялся по поводу качества записи дебютника, мало того, что вы услышите звук, едва ли не более плохой, чем тогда. Ко всему прочему полностью утеряна нить, по которой вилась эстетика группы, все те чувства и атмосфера, которые были заложены на старте. Теперь, с ватными ударными поддерживающими столь же пещерные гитары, на этот раз выведенные чуть вперед и без эффекта эхо, зато “мясом” звука поедающие все вокруг, в том числе и гнусавую соло гитару, коллектив словно отскочил назад, представляя некую помесь своей собственной дум стилистики с чем-то подобным недо-трешу (“Черный Обелиск”, например). Наибольшее влияние на это оказывают даже не возросшие до дэтовых скорости песен, не неудачная агрессивная подача материала, а вокал – хриплый крик, в духе худших образцов советской тяжелой сцены. Где уж там чувственный хрип или чистый вокал – хорошо, если так получается…
Лишь две композиции вызывают положительные эмоции в процессе прослушивания “Кто” и дилогия “За Горизонт”, которую я позволю себе объединить в моем восприятии. Все остальное настолько бездумно и не интересно, что диву даешься, как можно так снизойти с небес на землю. По большей части придэтованный хеви-треш диссонирует не только с прошлыми работами, но и с хорошей музыкой в целом. Полубаллады в духе “Тени” очень напоминают нечто вроде Лепс meets Paradise Lost – ну разве это дело? А истерические “Жажда” и заглавная вещь, просто вырывают желание слушать с корнем. Лирика похожа на песни раненых, ну или здоровых, солдат у метро, в которой красной линией проходит некая (кажется, даже догадываюсь какая) война, теряющаяся среди стандартных штампов детей на обложках, глаз, смотрящих на тебя и внутренних лабиринтов неясных блужданий, внезапно разрывающих военные нити диска, таящиеся в русскоязычных текстах. Оформление, частично о котором упомянуто в предыдущем предложении, к тому же выполнено на уровне демо-запси, особенно дико странно расположенные строки технической информации, которые в лучшем случае можно прочитать, а не понять.
Отвратительная метаморфоза из красивой, душевной музыки, в балаганные воспоминания прошлых лет. Нужен ли нам такой S.C.A.L.P. большой вопрос… иногда можно просто красиво уйти, а если возвращаться иными, то, забыв и простив себе все сделанное, а, не трогая его одной рукой, и стоя где-то в другом месте.

This is the new S.C.A.L.P. album, and boy have they changed since back in the day. Well, I didn’t know of them back then, but since I got the re-release of their debut at the same time as this album I would be a complete moron if I didn’t hear a change of style. While the old material wasn’t really my cup of tea I still felt it was good stuff, but this is even further off my radar and I’m confident I won’t listen to the album again. Not saying it’s all-out horrible, it’s just not for me.
They’ve gone all-out melodic, completely melodic, and with a semi-industrial edge at times. I felt their old stuff was somewhat in the vein of older Tiamat, and to tell you the truth there’s something about Chuzhaya voina that reminds me of said band’s later efforts. You know, when Tiamat suddenly went all gay and left their death metal roots behind, the same way I feel about S.C.A.L.P.. I don’t get this laidback metal that feels almost like rock at times, just heavier. With a track like Teni (tvoi mir…) I’m guessing they’re going for a saddened and melancholic atmosphere, but it backfires horribly. Maybe it’s because the lyrics are in their native tongue this time, but it just sounds awful when the vocalist tries to sound emotional, he doesn’t have the voice for it. But I guess it’s a different vocalist from the Through eternity album, ‘cause it’s not as strong and powerful throughout the remainder of the album either. He goes for the same kind of raspy, yet clean, vocals, but I’m not convinced.
I have no idea what to think of this; there’s nothing wrong with their musicianship, but I don’t like it. A couple of times I even feel it reminds me of Clawfinger, minus the rap vocals and way heavier, or like a heavier Rammstein with a gothic touch. It’s mid-paced to slow music, all the way through, and it lacks any real punch. They go through heavier and more aggressive bits, like Solnce mertvih, but it still sounds like bad heavy metal in my ears. They also go all-out melodic with tracks like Kto, which sounds almost power metal bad. So it’s easy to say this is not my cup of tea. I don’t see any appeal in this type of music; the melodic leads are too melodic, the music in general is too mellow and the vocals aren’t very powerful. But I guess it’s all done with a sense of industrialism and progression, and that’s just not my bag (at least not like this).

Etter å ha lidd meg gjennom debuten til dette bandet, var det ikke særlig enkelt å gi seg i kast med deres siste tilskudd til diskografien. De har bare rukket å gi ut ei skive mellom denne og sin første fullengder, men å kvalitetssikre låtmaterialet sitt det har de neimen ikke klart. Alle de negative tingene som ble påpekt i forbindelse med debuten er også gjeldende her. Lyden og produksjonen er kraftig forbedret, naturlig nok, men der stopper også rosen. Det skal vedgås at denne skiva er marginalt bedre enn debuten og opparbeider seg dermed ett ekstrapoeng, men trioen er blottet for noenting som ligner musikalitet. For min del må bandet gjerne holde seg på de russiske stepper til evig tid, de har iallfall ingenting å gjøre på stereoanlegget…

Ветераны российской дум-метал сцены S.C.A.L.P. уже неоднократно становились гостями наших рубрик DemoZone и CD-Reviews, и вот они снова с нами – на этот раз сразу с двумя релизами: переизданием классического альбома ‘Through Eternity” 1997 года и совершенно новой пластинкой ‘Чужая Война’. О переиздании особо и сказать нечего – тот же трэк-лист, то же оформление, разве что имеет место быть ремастеринг, датированный 2005 годом, но радикальных изменений в звучании (особенно по меркам 2009 года) он не дал. Новый же альбом – это полностью русскоязычная работа, выдержанная в стиле дарк-метал, с надрывным вокалом и прямолинейными риффами. Работа добротная, но, увы, яркой или интересной её никак не назовешь – это, скорее, подарок преданным фэнам S.C.A.L.P., нежели шаг для завоевания новой аудитории.

Come giа anticipato nella recensione di “Through Eternity”, la ristampa del primo album degli S.C.A.L.P. per mano della Bad Mood Man Records, eccoci qui a parlare invece della nuovissima pubblicazione del gruppo, ovvero il terzo disco, “Chuzhaya Voina”, che segue dopo parecchio tempo “Blood And Tears”, dato alle stampe nel 2004.
Dal secondo album, comunque, di cose ne sono successe, in primis la prematura scomparsa del cantante/bassista Evgeny Ryzhenok, che ha reso necessario un cambio di line-up. Cosм oltre a Alexey Kuznetsov alla batteria, abbiamo Pavel Peristiy che, oltre a occuparsi della chitarra come nelle precedenti pubblicazioni, prende posto anche dietro al microfono. Infine il nuovo arrivato, Evgeny Semenov, ricopre il ruolo di bassista.
Il CD che ho tra le mani и ancora una volta ben curato grazie all’ottima Bad Mood Man, che di certo non si accontenta di prodotti amatoriali e quindi abbiamo una copertina pregevole, una registrazione senza sbavature e una buonissima resa sonora; eppure questa volta c’и qualcosa che mi convince meno del solito. Il debutto “Through Eternity” riusciva a convincere anche nella sua ingenuitа (parliamo del 1997) e, anzi, proprio grazie a quella la musica del quartetto (all’epoca c’era anche un tastierista) l’opera risultava fresca e sincera; allo stesso modo “Blood And Tears” convinceva per i suoi progressi verso un contesto piщ professionale sebbene meno spontaneo e il risultato non era inferiore. Invece questa volta qualcosa si inceppa nel cammino degli S.C.A.L.P. e il risultato finale и un album che non и brutto, ma di certo non aggiunge assolutamente niente al percorso della band. Questo, attenzione, non vuol dire che l’album и una fotocopia dei precedenti, anzi, le sonoritа sono cambiate e di parecchio, ma intendo che questa nuova direzione artistica non sembra portare la band a fare un passo avanti.
Oltretutto l’incipit dell’album mi aveva fatto ben sperare: i due minuti di introduzione di “Rassvet” erano un bell’esempio di intreccio chitarristico, con la malinconia di una chitarra solista languida che si appoggia su un leggero arpeggio acustico. Giа dalla seconda “Skvoz Stenu”, invece, la musica si appiattisce su ritmiche pesanti e metalliche che perт mancano di mordente e dinamismo; la sezione ritmica sottolinea i momenti piщ forti senza grande inventiva e anche la voce di Peristiy non и sicuramente un passo avanti rispetto a quella giа non eccezionale del povero Ryzhenok.
Forti cambiamenti si vedono con chiarezza in altri episodi, come nel caso della title-track, che sacrifica l’atmosfera del primo disco in favore di una struttura piщ dondolante e groovy; il taglio della musica si fa nettamente piщ moderno e le chitarre vanno a pescare in certe soluzioni del thrash, senza perт riuscire ad averne la tagliente forza. Restano di tanto in tanto degli episodi interessanti come “Teni (Tvoi Mir…)”, piщ triste e malinconica, o “Za Gorizont II”, dove si vedono buoni spunti melodici. Perт la sensazione generale и quella di avere a che fare con un gruppo che dopo tanti anni vuole cambiare completamente pelle, senza sapere bene come muoversi.
Se quindi non conoscete gli S.C.A.L.P. e volete cercare qualcosa di adatto per scoprirli, il mio consiglio resta quello di puntare sulla ristampa del debutto appena pubblicata, oppure su “Blood And Tears”, che perт и forse un po’ piщ difficile da reperire. Per quanto riguarda il nuovo corso della band, speriamo che il prossimo album chiarisca loro le idee e che riescano a uscire da questo momento di confusione.

Chuzhaya Voina brings together a mostly doom style that erupts into more aggressive moments, then then goes into some rock ballad-esque numbers. The music is never bad, but never rises above a level of generically good.
What’s really hurting this album, though, is the vocals, and, more importantly, the role that they play. The vocals are largely in that kind of delivery common to countries formerly part of the U.S.S.R., a delivery that evokes a rabid dog barking: hoarse, mean, and not particularly musical. Here, the dog barks attempt to be semi-melodic, or try to go off and do their own solo thing while the music does what it’s doing, which results in consistently achieving the opposite of musicality. It’s ludicrous, especially considering how prominent the dorky vocals are placed in the mix, telling the listener that we should believe these vocals are a seriously viable anchor to hold the songs together. They are not.
Chuzhaya Voina would have been an average album, but the implementation of the terrible vocals make it an increasing drag to listen to.

J’ai laissé S.C.A.L.P. sur un Through Eternity en demi-teinte : un bon potentiel mal utilisé selon moi. C’est donc aujourd’hui que je m’attaque à Chuzhava Voina avec une envie d’être surpris !
L’artwork est pas mal, on retrouve des photos des trois protagonistes, les décors sont sympas, peut être plus professionnels que sur Through Eternity.
L’album débute avec un dialogue subtil entre deux guitares. C’est très beau, c’est planant et j’ai de suite une lueur d’espoir dans les yeux. Malheureusement, cette lueur sera de courte durée. Puisque dès la fin de l’intro, on se retrouve sur une musique très (trop) éloignée du Doom/Death pour que je puisse m’y retrouver. La musique et les mélodies sont de qualité, assez proches du Heavy métal, mais dès l’entrée de la voix, je me retrouve toujours face à ce problème : apprécier la musique malgré cette voix “saturée” de mauvaise facture. Entre Through Eternity et Chuzhava Voina, 12 ans se sont écoulés et le groupe reste trop fidèle à ce qu’il faisait. Aucune évolution et du coup, toujours autant de mal à pénétrer le monde de S.C.A.L.P.
N’accrochant pas du tout la voix, un sentiment de gâchis m’envahit. Les idées ne sont pas mauvaises, pas très originales, mais les mélodies sont là, accrocheuses. Des morceaux tirent même leur épingle du jeu comme Teni (Tvoi Mir…) avec une voix “saturée” moins présente, ou Za Gorizont I où la voix est complètement absente. Mais même là, la démonstration entre les guitares devient vite sans intérêt. Za Gorizont II est quant à lui plus recherché, la voix se fait plus claire, plus maîtrisée et on commence à apprécier la musique de S.C.A.L.P. mais bien trop tard.
Avec de bonnes mélodies, des idées qui pourraient être plus exploitées, S.C.A.L.P. montre une nouvelle fois son potentiel. Mais pour un groupe existant depuis 1991, il serait temps de concrétiser ! Les fans de Heavy s’y retrouveront peut être, mais pas moi. Pour la première fois, je peux dire que je préfère la voix claire à la voix dite “saturée”, beaucoup plus maîtrisée !
Déçu donc par cet album, par ce groupe qui par un mauvais choix de voix (pas de chanteur) gâche toute sa musique. Concept à revoir !

Es lo primero que escucho de esta banda rusa y puede que sea lo último. No tanto porque sea una patata, el tema es que no me dicen gran cosa.
Practican un Metal con parecidos a algunos discos de Paradise Lost, a los fineses Sentenced (no cuando hacían Death Metal), guitarras potentes, otras veces acústicas, algo de melodía, teclados Góticos y un guitarreo que llegó a recordarme a Pantera, no tanto por la manera de escribir riffs, más que nada por la potencia de la guitarra.
No acaba de convencerme la voz, no es que el tio cante mal, tampoco es que lo haga muy bien, pero es normalito y corriente y si a eso sumamos que canta en ruso con esa sonoridad tan “rara” que tiene pues hace que no tenga suficiente atractivo para mí.
La sensación que me queda tras escuchar el disco unas cuantas veces es que no destacan ni para lo bueno ni para lo malo, no hay ningún tema que llame la atención, es todo bastante similar y no sorprenden para nada.
Quienes disfruten a tope con estilos como estos pueden encontrarles más cosas positivas que yo, aún así, repito, es un disco muy corriente y moliente.

S.C.A.L.P. has been categorized as doom/gothic, but that’s definitely not what you’ll find here. Going between thrash, black metal, and a few other genres, Чужая война provides a variety of sounds. The guitar hooks come off with a distinct, Russian quality while occasionally pulling out hardcore punk with more traditional thrash. The title of the album is hard to translate, coming off as ‘A Foreign War’ but it’s almost impossible to put into English properly. The bardic quality of the vocals brings it together for some awesome Russianness, but you won’t understand that aspect unless you’re familiar with the language and musicians like Okudzhava. Чужая война paints a picture of the vastness of the steppes with Cossacks jumping over running horses, but if you’re a foreigner with little knowledge of Russian culture, it’s going to push you away.

S.C.A.L.P. is an underground Doom Metal band from Russia. The project was formed in 1991, but this is only their third full-length album. In Russia there are many interesting Doom Metal bands, because in the twenty-first century interesting projects are beginning to grow like mushrooms. “Чужая Война” is not one of those great Doom Metal releases – it has really annoying vocal parts, too primitive guitars, normal mood, but it is not involving enough. You can’t find great variety, well there are acoustic guitars in songs here… For the most part it is boring, but sometimes better than average.
The album begins with an instrumental song, which sounds like Progressive or instrumental Rock, all the music is constantly changing – one second the song sounds like Heavy/Doom, later it gets darker and more atmospheric colors. That’s why in the beginning I want to talk about the instrumental side. Despite the fact that everything is full of diversity, the technical side sucks. The first idea is that these are people from school, those who have a guitar for only one month in their hands and now try to play everything that I write, no matter that you bumble everywhere. The composition is not bad, and sometimes gives something really interesting it’s just that the technical side is poor and not professional. Is this typical to underground music scene? Probably, yes. But here it doesn’t create something dark, raw and grim atmosphere. It just shows us how bad it could be played. The drums are okay, there is nothing that I want to mention, no feeling, good and it’s all.
Vocally this is terrible. If you have heard drunken Russian people singing with no ear, it is a really similar view, just add second class Doom Metal music and here we have S.C.A.L.P.. It is difficult to say how bad the vocals are. Try to imagine a great introduction of the song, normal first accord, and then suddenly your song is destroyed by some outside noise – your neighbor shouting at his dog – why he is not pooping and pissing. Every atmospheric insertion, every wonderful instrumental song is damaged by this type of voice. And this is not normal singing – if you say some tensioning vowel with some annoying melody, you can sing like that, if you’re drunk and you feel fun, but this is an album, not a table in a bar, this is supposed to be music, not a party.
In the end I leave a good point for the album. It’s the solos, yes, they play solos and that sounds great. Okay, I probably re-value their technical side, on the second part of the album the situation changes a bit and we have nice solos reminiscent of good Heavy Metal bands like Accept or Iron Maiden. The worst thing is that the solos are found in only one or two songs, and end too fast.
“Чужая Война” is a really poor album, it has some nice insertions and songs, but the bad vocals and non-technical guitarist made listening to this album torturous. The band is old, their vocalist is dead, and they probably had to split-up. The question is why they decided to continue since they are just one of a thousand.
