Raventale is a one-man project featuring “Den of Winter” guitarist Astaroth. This album is being advertised as the band’s transformation from depressive black/pagan metal to black doom metal. Interesting way to promote the band as it is still half black metal to me, adding a few slower riffs and some extra keys doesn’t make you a doom band all of a sudden but anyway this is still a great album despite the mis-leading promotion. I must stress however this ain’t no traditional black metal album so just beware black metal heads, this album is way more diverse than that. The album starts off very doom with a haunting goth/doom sound using keys before it explodes into typical bombastic black metal style. The track is called “The Fall Of The Mortal Aspirations” and is a great attempt at making something heavy and dramatic using keys but avoiding sounding like just another goth/black/doom hybrid. The sound from that out-set is real powerful and is really highlighted on the excellent “My Birds Of Misfortune” which has everything from metallic chugging riffing which got me sucked right away, the track features some breath-taking musical interludes that mellow things out a bit but doesn’t sound distracting or out of place. This is one heavy track that also features some strong melody lines and like most of the album, the arrangement is faultless. Raventale gained significant notoriety for their first record and its portrayal of the nature inspired lyrical themes and still a lot of themes remained with this album. One thing that has changed though is the use of English texts which will make a lot of us happy as the lyrics are beautifully written. “A Fading Scent Of Cinnamon And The Naked” once again includes a lot of somber emotive sections but all bundled with some catchy but real crunchy guitar sounds. Astaroth clearly shows he has high standards of musicianship, song writing and diversity and while this album sounds a lot cleaner than the first album from them, it actually benefits the bands style perfectly. The rasping vocals of Astaroth is what gives the songs the black metal edge but this album is diverse enough and has so many strong and sometimes beautiful melodies, it can appeal to a wide section of metal fans who like metal that is powerful emotionally as well as musically. The album is interspersed with instrumentals, most of which are so short that they blend in with the following track so they sound like a integral part of the album. The next major highlight for me is track 8 “Suicide As The Destined End”, this track reeks of sorrow and sadness and is the most funeral doom sounding track on the album. The epic sounding track on the album and once again, beautifully constructed and playing. It has a almost symphonic metal vibe to it towards the end of the track, this is a black/doom sound that can make you cry if you let it. A note for fans of the first album from this band, the sound has distinctly changed as well as the style and the shaping of the production around the music has been molded in a different light to the previous efforts, which was a little monotonous on occasions, this has a epic symphonic sound driven by sorrow and sadness while retaining some viscous metallic crunch in places. Hard album to categorize, some doom fans will say not doom enough, some black metal fans will see it as a sell-out which its not at all in my opinion. Hell, i was ready to tear this album apart before listening to it but i was instantly was drawn in by the excellent musicianship and the intense emotional pull that this album has, great album.

I Raventale sono in realtà un solo project, l’unico membro Astaroth ha nel tempo modificato la natura della sua creatura nata come una sorta di depressive black act verso lidi black/doom.
“Mortal Aspirations” è il terzo capitolo, una virata netta che già dalle prime note scandite da “The Fall Of The Mortal Apirations” fa intravedere chiaramente il percorso intrapreso.
Se ancora vi è una forta presenza della matrice black il lato depressive è stato quasi totalmente obliato a discapito di una visuale doomica profonda, scura e dall’uso di atmosfere gotiche dense.
“My Birds Of Misfortune” è dotata di un bel riffone portante avvolgente e trova negli attimi di respiro accarezzati da scelte pastose una valida soluzione che non distoglie ne fa calare la tensione creata dai passaggi antecedenti.
“A Fading Scent Of Cinnamon And Naked” e “The Silhoutte Of Despair” mettono in mostra il miglioramento compositivo e sopratutto strumentale dal primo disco a oggi fatto da Astaroth, il riffing è pressante e costantemente avvolto da quell’emotività cupa che sembra ricoprire l’intero platter.
I brani strumentali posti a intermezzo formano dei prolungamenti che mantengono viva la connessione fra la traccia appena trascorsa con quella che verrà a seguito, un filo conduttore ben costruito, un solo continuo andare che trova il suo punto più funereo e triste in “Suicide As The Destined End”.
Le liriche rappresentano e sono incentrate sulla natura, il suo corso cosa che non è variata dal suo primo lavoro, è invece cambiato l’idioma che dalla lingua madre ucraino e passato ad un inglese ben strutturato e raffinato.
E’ un album di difficile catalogazione, è vero che il doom e il black sono le fonti principali ma le venature gotiche ed epiche offrono all’ascoltatore quella sinfonicità posta a valore aggiunto.
“Mortal Aspirations” è un gran disco, la maestria compositiva di Astaroth ha forse raggiunto i livelli più alti regalandoci un brillante nero che vi coinvolgerà, l’Inferno mostra il lato più malinconico/suadente e lo fa attraverso le sue mortali note.

Третий альбом Raventale ознаменовал радикальные перемены в саунде и концепции этого украинского one-man-проекта. Если ранее мультиинструменталист, скрывающийся под ником Астарот, играл атмосферный блэк-дум с русскоязычными текстами, посвященными осенней природе (в чем, надо отметить, преуспел), то “Mortal Aspirations” представляет собой куда более жесткую и тяжелую музыку, которую лучше всего описать термином «дарк-метал». Это значит, что в материале Raventale теперь сочетаются элементы не только блэка и дума, но и дэта – хотя композиции по-прежнему выдержаны в среднем темпе, гитары и барабаны заметно прибавили в тяжести. При этом “Mortal Aspirations” сохранил всегда присущую проекту мелодичность, никуда не делась и значительная доля клавишных в саунде, а блэковые пассажи, хоть и сократились по продолжительности, по-прежнему являются неотъемлемой частью творчества Raventale. Изменились и тексты – мало того, что с русского языка Астарот перешел на английский, он теперь поет не о природе, а о человеке, точнее, о его месте во вселенной, о природе времени, о самопознании и о смерти. Во многом они основаны на личном опыте автора, о чем недвусмысленно свидетельствует посвящение “Escape To The Stars” некому Дмитрию Бектимирову, «погибшему слишком ранней и слишком внезапной смертью». Соответственно, изменилась и атмосфера, создаваемая материалом – от былой созерцательности и умиротворения не осталось и следа, теперь музыка Raventale переполнена осознанием скоротечности времени, хрупкости жизни, ничтожности человека на фоне сил, управляющих вселенной… По сути, мы имеем дело с совершенно другим Raventale, имеющим что-то общее со старой ипостасью этого проекта разве что на уровне мелодики. Но лично мне “Mortal Aspirations” понравился ничуть не меньше, чем «На хрустальных качелях» (2006), причем не потребовалось даже времени на привыкание. Если творец не теряет вдохновение, и если в основе его творчества лежат сильные эмоции, которые он умеет адекватно выражать в музыке и текстах, то он остается интересен в любой ипостаси…
P.S.Тексты, правда, явно переводились с русского со словарем, и хотя грамматических ляпов не так много, смысл конкретных строчек порой «расплывается». Но в остальном, прекрасный альбом.

Das Drittwerk des ukrainischen Ein-Mann-Projekts RAVENTALE wird als Black/Doom Metal beworben, aber das sollte man so nicht ganz stehen lassen, denn ein paar langsamere Riffs und atmosphärische Keyboardeinsprengsel machen noch kein Doom-Album. “Mortal Aspirations“ ist zugegebenermaßen nicht ganz einfach zu kategorisieren, aber sehr gemäßigter, melodischer Black Metal mit Elementen aus Doom und auch Death Metal trifft es eher. Das mag Korinthenkackerei sein, mit der man sich nicht unbedingt aufhalten muss, aber es soll hier dennoch Erwähnung finden, damit niemand fälschlicherweise einen Sound wie etwa auf den beiden Erstwerken der finnischen UNHOLY oder bei FORGOTTEN TOMB erwartet.

Unter den gelisteten neun Nummern sind nur fünf volle, aber dafür sehr lange Lieder, bei den übrigen vier Titeln handelt es sich um kurze instrumentale Zwischenspiele (darunter das titelgerecht spacige, aber deplatziert wirkende “Cosmos Inside“ und das einem verstorbenen Freund des Protagonisten Astaroth gewidmete “Escape To The Stars“).
Der Albumopener “The Fall Of The Mortal Aspirations“ startet mit gotisch anmutender Keyboard-Spielerei, bevor typischer bombastischer Black Metal ertönt. Die atmosphärische Unterfütterung durch das Tasteninstrument verleiht der Sache eine recht erhabene Note und erinnert an (die Posaune bei) SEAR BLISS, der tiefe Gesang – auf vorliegendem Album erstmals nicht von Astaroth selbst, sondern einem Sessionsänger übernommen – hat mehr Ähnlichkeit zu AMON AMARTH als zum Durchschnitts-Black-Metal-Kreischer. “My Birds Of Misfortune“ mit seinem flott vorpreschenden Hauptriff und seiner insgesamt mächtigen Ausrichtung verweist dann noch stärker auf die Schweden; ein ruhiger, verträumter Mittelteil rundet diesen achtminütigen Höhepunkt des Albums ab. “A Fading Scent of Cinnamon and Naked“ und “The Silhouette of Despair“ können den vorangegangen Tracks nicht das Wasser reichen, warten aber auch mit der für RAVENTALE anno 2009 offenbar charakteristischen Mischung aus schwarzmetallisch-melodischen und schweren Riffs sowie ruhigen, kummervollen Abschnitten auf. Das abschließende “Suicide As The Destined End“ ist dann im Kontrast dazu die Nummer des Albums, wo das Black/Doom-Etikett am ehesten passt: Die den vorangegangenen Liedern mitschwingende Aggression ist komplett verschwunden, stattdessen marschiert man elf Minuten lang hoffnungslos mit in den titelgebenden Freitod.

Was bleibt also festzuhalten? “Mortal Aspirations“ ist mit seiner Melange aus symphonischen, elegischen und schweren Passagen nicht leicht in eine Schublade zu stecken und aufgrund seiner Vielfalt für zahlreiche Hörer potentiell interessant. Dem Album als Ganzes fehlt aber aufgrund dessen auch ein wenig der rote Faden; es hinterlässt den Eindruck, als ob RAVENTALE-Protagonist Astaroth unentschlossen war, in welche Richtung die Reise denn führen soll. Immerhin: Die Nummern, die in nicht zu vielen Gehegen gleichzeitig wildern, sondern klarer in eine Richtung gehen – etwa “My Birds Of Misfortune“ und “Suicide As The Destined End“ –, sind atmosphärisch dicht und funktionieren gut.

Longtemps retenus à l’intéreur de leurs frontières, les albums en provenance des pays de l’ex-Urss arrivent maintenant jusqu’à nous. Nous découvrons donc progressivement des formations métal qui valent largement le détour. Dans le domaine du black, voici par exemple le dernier opus de RAVENTALE, projet musical Ukrainien d’un seul membre multi-instrumentaliste, Astaroth. Ce dernier opus en date intitulé “Mortal Aspirations” est dèja la troisième œuvre de son géniteur qui a lancé son projet en 2005. Astaroth a donc beaucoup de choses à nous présenter sans laisser son inspiration retomber par de longs atermoiements.

“Mortal Aspirations” n’est pas facile à classer d’entrée de jeu, à la première écoute, il faut le souligner. Entre Black metal et Doom, entre puissance heavy/thrash et passages ambiants, on ne sait plus où donner de l’oreille, mais on se laisse facilement entrainer dans le monde du musicien Slave qui vous emmène loin, très loin dans les sombres forêts glacées de son pays.
Neuf titres assez longs nous sont proposés donc, mais quatre d’entre-eux sont des instrumentaux et font office d’introductions aux compositions où le chant death agrémente les envolées thrashisantes sur fond de claviers qui tissent la trame de fond de chaque titre. Musique inclassable donc où l’on retrouve des penchants à la IMMORTAL, du old-black à la SAMAËL première période, de la rugosité primaire à la VENOM, et même des bidouillages électroniques me faisant penser à “Crystal Lake” de KLAUS SHULZE (ambiant electro des 80′s).

Le premier mot qui me vient à l’esprit pour qualifier le démarche d’Astaroth est “riche”, riche de part les émotions procurées, riche de part une certaine simplicité dans la complexité des compositions. Bref, une certaine fraîcheur se dégage de cet album, fraicheur qui est la bienvenue après certaines avancées trop virtuelles d’un black/doom actuel où il faut se “masturber le cerveau” pour essayer d’en digérer le contenu trop élitiste et technique.

Comme vous l’aurez compris, j’ai adoré “Mortal Aspirations” et je pense que beaucoup d’entre vous, voyageurs du dark-métal “doomesque” et cosmique seront subjugués à son écoute tout simplement.

Ah more arriving from that cold metal hotbed the Ukraine, good; I really must visit some day. Not black metal this time but what I would describe as atmospheric doom with certain sensibilities towards both black and death. One thing I was surprised on researching after a fair few listens is that this is pretty much all the work of one person Astaroth although on this the third full length album he has enlisted the help of Athamas on vocals.

Atmospherics are instantly evoked with a sparkling frost laden keyboard sound (again think the likes of Astrofaes). Not sure what it is about Ukrainian synths but they always sound like they have been found in an old bunker and left over from the cold war, they certainly have their own unique feel about them. Songs are generally long and progressively flow; they are well constructed and put together. This first one ‘The Fall of the Mortal Aspirations’ clocks in at over 9 minutes and when the vocals come in you can feel the hoary and craggy demeanour behind them. Guitars strum, drums sound like they are from a machine and the bass drives away. The recording is not all sparkly but has a good cold feel about it that kind of makes you shiver and melody is rife here mainly due to expansive tripped out keyboard parts. “Sadness of death and decay of love” were apparently influences and inspiration on making the album and it is felt on the maudlin moments that meld together the upfront gallops.

‘My Birds Of Misfortune’ has a particularly stomp heavy riff about it and drives it home with a good pummelling groove that will stay in your head. It could have been left as a 4 minute number to get the message across but that appears not to be something in the group’s makeup as they let things evolve into long flowing instrumental swathes before finally nailing the coffin door shut by repeating the riff heavy chorus again. Some things are lost in the translation a bit such as song title ‘A Fading Scent of Cinnamon and Naked’ but the nice doom laden and depressive mindset of the number is easy to comprehend. It is pretty easy to get lost here and just let the music flow; it did actually take a few listens to fully get to grips but now I find myself nicely won over. The majestic instrumental ‘Escape To The Stars’ reminds a bit of Insomnium with its cold flow as well as Catamenia who I note are amongst top friends on the bands MySpace page. So if you have not yet decided, as the song says, to take ‘Suicide As The Destined End,’ this is well worth checking out.

Terzo studio album per la one-man band Raventale, la band ucraina costituita dal solo Astaroth si fa autrice di un ibrido sonoro a metà tra black e doom metal che non disdegna puntate nelle melodie a tinte fosche di matrice svedish death.

“Mortal Aspirations” è un lavoro che è un piccolo paradosso, in quanto è costituito da ottime songs, prese singolarmente, ma che nel proprio insieme evidenziano un certo immobilismo di soluzioni e strutture che non mettono al riparo l’ascoltatore da sensazioni di tedio. Ciò nonostante l’album si lascia apprezzare grazie ad un feeling oscuro e morboso che viene fuori con particolare veemenza nell’uso delle tastiere, queste disegnano di volta in volta freddi scenari fatti di tristezza e di mortiferi slanci sui quali prendono forma vocals spettrali e rarefatte movenze di chitarra.

Tra i brani di maggior spessore di questo lavoro vanno annoverati: “My Birds of Misfortune” e “Suicide As the Destined End”, brani dove vengono in eccellenza stati d’animo che trovano nel trapasso, il raggiungimento ultimo.

Un lavoro che conferma ottime doti compositive che però necessitano di un maggiore piglio eclettico. Consigliato a chi è alla ricerca di un album dai toni decadenti e che vuole andare oltre il solito nugolo di bands di primo piano. Ascolto propedeutico al possibile acquisto.

Az ukrán zenekarokkal egyre jobb viszonyt ápolok. Csak elmélkedve ülök néha a hangszóró előtt, hogy milyen jó muzsikákat hoznak össze észak-keleti szomszédaink. Elég, ha csak olyan zenekarokra gondolni, mint a Nokturnal Mortum, Acephala vagy Kurgan, hogy csak tényleg párat említsek. Azért, hogy még bőven van mit felfedezni eme ország undergroundjából azt ékesen bizonyítja a most bemutatásra kerülő egyszemélyes Raventale is, ami biztosan nem fog rontani az ukrán zenekarokról kialakított képemen.
Astaroth név alatt futó úriember játszik az összes hangszeren, csak a dob megy gépről amit én sem nagyon szeretek, de itt egész jól megvan oldva, egy-két kivételtől eltekintve. Hangja is teljesen rendben van inkább mélyebb black metalos tónus. Amúgy a „Mortal Aspirations”-ra keresztelt lemez már a harmadik a sorban. A borítóra ránézve, már kirajzolódott előttem a zene milyensége, ami részben be is igazolódott. Azért csak részben mert, egy kicsivel lassabb muzsikára számítottam. Persze így sem egy gyors lemez ez, többségében középtempóban fogant. Ennek tudatában talán a doom/black metal kategóriába lehetne besorolni. Talán a szintén ukrán kiválóság Drudkh egy lassabb verziójának tudnám nevezni.
Astaroth a billentyűs hangszert sem fél kezelni, mely a hangulat megteremtésében játszik nagy szerepet és ezt igyekszik mindenhol ki is használni. Rögtön az első dal „The Fall of the Mortal Aspirations” lendületesen kezd jó riffekkel és a lassabb elmélkedős részek sem maradhatnak ki, a majd tíz perces monumentális szerzeményből. Hangulatilag egy tökéletes kompozíció melyben a kellő erő is megvan. Szintén ilyen dal a „My Birds of Misfortune” is. A döngölős gitárok itt szintén erőt sugároznak, hogy aztán egy szép gitárharmóniás dallam is előtörjön a durvább zenei közegből. A negyedik dalban aztán jobban a húros hangszerek dominálnak gyors és lassú részek váltakozásával. Már itt kirajzolódik a Raventale zenei ösvénye mely végig is kísér minket az egész lemezen. Megemlíteném még a dalok sorából az “Escape to the Stars”-t, mely az egyik leggyorsabb tétel a lemezen és a közepén megbúvó szóló is szépre sikerült. A nyolcas „Suicide As the Destined End” aztán egy végig doom-os lassúságú darab, mely hangulatilag az egyik legsötétebb téma.
A Raventale erejét az a bizonyos atmoszféra adja, ami végig ott lapul a dalokban. Amiért, pedig kifejezett jó hallgatni, hogy a természet ereje is fellelhető, ami szintén fontos összetevője a lemeznek. Félre értés ne essék, sok újdonságot nem rejt ez a korong, azonban csak ajánlani tudom akárkinek, aki egy kicsit is rajong a sötétebb atmoszférikusabb itt-ott dallamosabb zenékért.

Sono un metodico (tenete in mente questa affermazione).
Ad esempio mi attraggono donne che ben conciliano con la mia attitudine musicale: decise, impenetrabili e con quel fondo di malinconica tristezza che le rende misteriosamente irresistibili.
L’assenza di una sola di queste caratteristiche mi provoca indifferenza totale.
Proprio come succede per un disco.

Con il nuovo Raventale nessun problema a riguardo: un platter indiscutibilmente vivace, particolare nella propria costruzione archetipica e dotato di quelle tinte notturne che lo posizionano a metà dall’essere un titolo semplicemente aggressivo ovvero meramente introspettivo. Sempre (troppo) costante ad uno schema timbrico-compositivo che non intende distanziarsi radicalmente dal post black industrial che prevede la voce elettrizzata dall’harmonizer, la chitarra frequentemente in tremolo ed un mixage di up tempos piuttosto regolari, Astaroth innesta valori (liriche) e sentori (act) tipicamente melodic doom. I brani di Mortal Aspirations godono così di molti richiami onirici che ne guidano lo sviluppo, ora alleggerendo l’impatto e lavorando di fioretto chitarristico, ora intensificando l’apporto tastieristico così da creare un’atmosfera vorticosa e drammatica. Il progetto è un solo-work piuttosto radicale in cui ogni strumento è studiato e realizzato dal mastermind Astaroth che dimostra di avere un buon seme compositivo di fondo, una discreta perizia nel maneggiare la strumentazione base e l’elettronica, ma un po’ troppa ripetitività. La terza My Birds Of Misfortune rappresenta la sintesi cantata di quanto vi ho appena descritto: ferale l’attacco di metà brano quando tra 2 porzioni scariche la programmazione della drum-machine (dalle restituzioni esageratamente plastificate) dispensa un tappeto di bass-drums su cui la single note produce una velocissima melodia psico-horror. L’espediente della variazione ritmica basata sull’intensificazione della cassa nei momenti con minor contenuto timbrico sarà un must imprescindibile per tutto il platter: in A Fading Scent Of Cinnamon And Naked è, ad esempio, facilissimo notare che con l’ingresso delle keyboards la frequenza diminuisce, alleggerendosi ulteriormente una volta montati anche gli arpeggi in perfetto pagan-style; stesso discorso nella vicina Escape To The Stars in cui la differenza rimane molto più marcata da una prima parte tirata e decisamente black metal ed una seconda ultramelodica e ritmicamente molto trattenuta.

L’apporto atmosferico aumenta di brano in brano, aiutato dalle brevi cuciture alla Cosmos Inside (molto “space”) e Watching A Luna Becomes Thy Face, ma soprattutto dalla crescita delle tastiere, spesso posizionate a guidare la main-line dei 9 act (The Silhouette Of Despair, Suicide As The Destined End tanto per proporre i due esempi più eclatanti). In questo senso i Raventale sono ancora lontani dall’abbandonare completamente i richiami ai conterranei Drudkh, anche se dai primi esperimenti discografici l’album (il terzo) gode di una maggiore personalizzazione. Due accorgimenti lo rimodellano rispetto al limitrofo Long Passed Days: il rafforzamento della base chitarristica prodotta con un maggiore utilizzo del riffing bitonale e stoppato, e la maggiore distorsione applicata al cantato; se il primo, fondamentalmente positivo, aiuta a rendere più risoluto l’amalgama, il secondo mi pare invece un passo falso bello e buono; il registro di Athamas (non più nella band ed utilizzato solo in Mortal Aspirations) viene infatti schiacciato nelle sue armoniche naturali rendendo la restituzione lineare e priva dei normali alti e bassi interpretativi. Molto meglio in passato quando Astaroth si occupava anche di questo aspetto.

Ed è proprio questo il punto: l’omogeneità delle tracce (non solo del cantato) e l’ortodossia metodologica della loro costruzione stilistica, ci consegna un lavoro che se da un lato non ha cadute improvvise o evidenti inciampi, dall’altro si indebolisce nel continuum suonando come un insistente autocitazionismo delle prime 3 tracce. In tal modo è difficile trovare lo spazio per una votazione che possa elevare i Raventale, pur buoni e mai stucchevoli, ad un rating che superi il 70.

Insomma, ascoltare Mortal Aspirations è come trovare la donna di cui vi parlavo, uscirci (con soddisfazione) 10 volte e capire che, nonostante le evidenti qualità, tutta la vita così non può andare.

Proprio non ce l’ho fatta. Mi dispiace ma, che si prenda in esame la lunghezza media dei brani, o la loro effettiva consistenza o valore che dir si voglia, beh: non andiamo lontani. Ci sono alcune idee, ed una traccia in particolare che fa salire di qualità il disco, ovvero “Escape To The Stars” con quella bella progressione nel mezzo. Più passano i minuti però, e purtroppo più l’idea generale è che tutti i riff e i brani composti dal gruppo, siano ancora desiderosi di una maggiore revisione e ristrutturazione. Black a tinte oscure e doomish si intersecano in un’atmosfera troppo poco estrema per poter convincere appieno.
L’anno di gestazione, per dare alle stampe questo lavoro, non rappresenta appieno il tempo realmente sufficiente, anche se da una parte, le tastiere e alcuni stacchi accompagnati dalla voce di Arthamas sono ben inseriti: ma non da regalare quel momento e quel risultato finale che ci si aspetta. A volte doom, a volte black, altre volte più verso lidi eterei, il nostro artista ucraino non fa spiccare il volo a quel volatile in copertina.
In poche parole è un lavoro immaturo, non da buttare completamente anzi, ma ogni brano è così tanto pieno di clichè che si fatica a mandarlo giù tutto al primo ascolto…

Еще не успели остыть эмоции от Давно Ушедших Дней 2008 года, предыдущего альбома украинского one man-проекта RAVENTALE, как ко мне в руки попал уже новый опус Астарота. О, диск 2008 года был великолепен во всех отношениях, и потому я с благоговейным трепетом начинал свое знакомство с Mortal Aspirations. Стоп… на сей раз альбом англоязычный? Перемены? Да, именно так: не ожидайте продолжения Давно Ушедших Дней, ибо вместе с лирикой претерпела изменения и музыка проекта. Звучание RAVENTALE стало еще более холодным и отрешенным, как ночное небо на страницах буклета (оформленного, кстати, довольно стильно), что слышно с первых же минут, и с первых же минут удивляет. Во многом этому поспособствовали мелодичные doom-death-вкрапления, которые раньше практически отсутствовали. В целом увеличился темп композиций, гитарный риффинг стал более уверенным, а мелодии – более запоминающимися, и вообще балом правит красивый, атмосферный черненный метал. Но атмосфера его уже иная, поубавилось в прошлом столь явной депрессивности. Однако не стоит думать, что настроение изменилось радикально. Просто если на Давно Ушедших Дней царила прозябшая осень с последними угасающими проблесками жизни, то здесь музыку будет уместно сравнить с бескрайним звездным небом, где нет ни жизни, ни смерти, а лишь одна бесконечность во всей своей величественной и пугающей красе. Это тоже магия, пусть и несколько иная, магия звезд… да, со звучанием клавиш Астарот определенно не прогадал.
RAVENTALE по-прежнему остается узнаваемой, оригинальной и безусловно талантливой группой одного автора. Но, боюсь, многим данная работа придется не по вкусу, так как отличия от ранних записей достаточно ощутимы. Мне же альбом очень понравился и, думается, я еще не раз к нему буду возвращаться, как и к предыдущим работам.

Raventale est un one man band formé en 2005 venu tout droit d’Ukraine, officiant dans le Dark/Black metal mélodique. Pour ma part cet album ne fait pas l’unanimité et je vais m’en expliquer.

Bien que ce “Mortal Aspirations” bénéficie d’une production à la hauteur, la musique d’Astaroth, seul maître à bord de ce vaisseau en perdition, n’a pas la moindre once d’originalité et s’enlise dans des compositions, certes bien réalisées, mais fades et sans surprise.

Les structures des morceaux sont ultra téléphonées, le clavier est omniprésent et lasse de part sa simplicité. Le chant (interprété par Athamas de Deferum Sacrum) est plat et sans âme, la batterie programmée est certes inventive, mais cette grosse caisse est insupportable lorsque la double pédale s’en mêle.

Par ailleurs ce qui blesse aussi c’est qu’à aucun moment la musique de Raventale ne décolle. Malgré un son de guitare massif et incisif les compositions de ce si bien nommé “Mortal Aspirations” n’ont aucun relief et c’est assez difficile de ne pas être tenté de passer les pistes avant que celles-ci ne soient finies tellement l’on s’ennuie à leur écoute.

Sur les neuf titres qui composent cette galette, pas moins de quatre instrumentaux font leur apparition et jouent plutôt un rôle d’interlude qui sont totalement en inéquation avec le reste des compos, à l’image de ce “Cosmos inside” interprété seulement avec ce clavier insipide, bourré de sons littéralement “techno” (de qui se moque-t-on?).

Malgré un artwork assez soigné (livret six pages avec paroles des chansons et un design gothique bleu nuit), cet album de Raventale est une bien pauvre offrande à nos pauvres oreilles en manque de nouvelles sensations. Vous aurez compris que ce “Mortal Aspiratons” ne restera pas dans les annales, ne reste qu’à Raventale de se remettre sérieusement au travail pour faire très vite oublier cette bévue qu’est ce “Mortal Aspirations”.

Da er Astaroth ute med skive nummer tre og det har blitt en mer variert affære denne gangen. Det er fortsatt mid-tempo og atmosfærisk Black Metal som utgjør grunnvollen i hans låtskriving, men denne gangen har han spedd på med både litt Death Metal og noen hint av Doom. Det har ført til et mørkere preg på musikken, uten at vi prater om gravferdstemning som får det til å gå kaldt nedover ryggen. Synth-bruken hans sender tankene i retning av Silent Hill-spillene og da tenker jeg særlig på kuttsekvensene hvor stemningen er av den mer ubehagelige og illevarslende varianten. Totalt sett er «Mortal Aspirations» meget melodiøs og harmoniserte tremoloriff går stort sett igjen i samtlige komposisjoner, men innførselen av andre impulser har også ført til at det finnes mer rocka og groovy rytmer. Stemmebruken er også mer variert, så i det store og hele er det tydelig at Astaroth er interessert i å utvkle bandets sound gradvis, uten at noe skal virke for hastig eller anstrengt og det lykkes han med. I debatten stemning versus originalitet er det fortsatt førstnevnte som regjerer og sjøl om det ved forrige korsvei ikke trakk særlig ned, er det nok det som forhindrer en sterkere sluttkarakter.

Podobne ako u recenzovaných Kauan, i tu ide o počin vydavateľstva BadMoonMan Music z Ruska, ktorý vydali i tento jednočlenný projekt Raventale. Myslím však, že tento krát nebudem tak kladne hodnotiť, ako u počinu kapely Kauan. Astaroth, ktorý svoj hudobný projekt založil v roku 2005, ako black/doom metalový očividne chce osloviť omnoho viac poslucháčov, nielen UG osadenstvo… V poradí tretí album „Mortal Aspirations“ je toho len dôkazom. Predošlé hudobné smerovanie nabralo istý obrat, už to nie je to, čo to bývalo. Hneď úvodná skladba mi svojou atmosférou evokuje niektorú zo skladieb kapely Dimmu Borgir. Celá tvorba na tomto albume je na míle vzdialená predošlým dvom nahrávkach, u ktorých mimochodom i „Long Passed Days“ začal „vykazovať istú zmenu“. Album „Mortal Aspirations“ je oproti predošlým počinom omnoho uhladenejší, heavy metalovejší, symfonickejší ale rozmanitejší. Spočiatku som bol s touto nahrávkou i celkom spokojný stále som však akosi nedokázal prekúsnuť vývoj tohto projektu. Je z cela jasné, že sa Astaroth využitím anglických textov (s ktorých prekladom pomáhal istý Lillian Gatta), uhladenejšej produkcie a celkovej zmene hudobného žánru snaží zapáčiť širšiemu publiku, avšak na úkor kvality jeho hudby. Čo ostáva nezmenené je vokalista Arthamas, ktorého vokál taktiež nadobudol patričným zmien. Za najsilnejšie momenty albumu považujem inštrumentálne skladby „Watching a Luna Becomes Thy Face“ a „Escape to the Stars“, ktoré sa naopak oproti „Cosmos Inside“ i celkom vydarili. Dobre podtrhujú tú kozmickú atmosféru, ktorú sa snaží Astaroth týmto počinom evokovať u poslucháčov. V závere by som dodal, že tento album nie je až tak zlý, ako možno z mojej recenzie vyplýva, nedokážem však akosi nájsť cestu k smerovaniu Raventale. Niekedy sa jeho hudba dokáže pohltiť, ale to nie až natoľko, ako by si možno prial samotný Astaroth, celkovo tento album pôsobí ako nejednotný celok. Nových poslucháčov si určite nájde, to som si istý, bojím sa len, aby jeho ďalší album nebol ešte slabší! Pre tento krát za tri body, čiže priemer.

It’s nice to see an artist with a vision of his own, to hear some good music with a focus. Raventale is a one man band from Ukraine; Astaroth, the headmaster has gathered together the heavyness of Doom, the sharpness of Black, the eeriness and spacey vibes of electronic music to bring us an original, tasty and exciting album. Mortal Aspirations is already his third release and the quality never failed.

I remember having recieved Long Passed Days, the previous one from Solitude Productions – which, through its subdivision BadMoodMan Music, supports the artist since that second album – and at that time having thought: ok, THAT is good (which means than the selective tastes of Solitude/BadMoodMan can sometimes be more hazardous). Anyway, when I gave that third album its first spin, I was at once reassured: the sound was as heavy and dark, the blend was once more perfectly balanced.

There is grandeur in Raventale’s flights of brooding lyricism. The keyboard’s part are cleverly placed rather far in the mix, only serving as a melodic backing, always present, always discreet ; it works as an omnipresent mournful aura that gives depth to the music and lightens it a bit also. Otherwise, this is a thick broth; I like the hoarse black-ish vociferations of Astaroth, never too far from the typical Death Doom growls. The drumming is obviously processed, what I don’t mind personnaly; it adds some kind of bleakness and urgency.

But there’s a true originality in Raventale’s features: about some bands, you can say: ok, the guys scream their lungs out and they also grunt; there are blastbeats and mammoth drumming, there are tremolo pickings and heavy guitars; it’s sharp and crushing: it’s BLACK DOOM then! That’s how it goes most of the time. With Raventale, i’d say it’s different : what you have here is a Doom band covered with a Black-ish shroud. The sound is black-ish: it’s fierce, bleak, cold. The guitars, if very heavy, keep that archetypal blurred texture – they sometimes also venture in softer and more melodic territories, some delicate lines that Astaroth perfectly delivers. This is Doom in the intentions: mournful and epic poetry, oppressing fate; this is Black in the uneasiness and instability of the forms and volumes.

Raventale achieves some very coherent music on this opus. On top of it, he does it with great talent. Let’s hope he will go on producing albums of this kind; we can’t have too many of them.
