This is actually a re-issue of Mournful Gust’s first album (2000), which is accompanied by a bonus CD containing their 2006 demo “The Frankness Eve” and more special material. Mournful Gust is a Ukrainian Death/Doom band that started in 1999, their second album was released a couple of years ago. The music is slow and heavy Death/Doom Metal, with some gothic influences. Quite a bit of heavy riffing, and an abundance of melodic moments, skilfully woven into the dark and heavy Death/Doom Metal. If you like My Dying Bride and Tristania you will most likely enjoy Mournful Gust.

Huh, what a surprise! Ukrainian cult doom metal band’s old stuff re-issue on great double CD release! I still have somewhere in my collection their Tapes which were released about 10 years ago, and now I have this stuff on CD format… that’s great thing, as their music is pretty awesome and worth for attention of fans who still looking for something made in pure way, without modern shit… As a whole here are two CDs with 16 songs, which will sink you deep into depression and dark melancholy and which you’ll listen again and again depending on mood… Low tuned death metal guitars with massive drumming and various threshods, good vocals, growls and female ones (from time to time). Variable guitars crossing with drumming and deep keyboards, filled with total depression and despair… Guitar solos… excellent! Deep and vortex, with great feelings and memorable, freezing performance… Shit, this is nostalgia for 10 years ago in my lifeJ. Also great thing is folkish melodies here, made by both guitars and keys, and sounds excellent! Thus there is awesome doom/death/folk metal, made with great passion and true attitude, beautiful, full of feelings and memorable… I do not afraid the word – masterpiece when it comes to early records of MOURNFUL GUST, because if there in ex-USSR area was huge metal scene evolution those years, then MOURNFUL GUST could be signed on some major doom metal label those days, but time and country’ politics make the deal and band got its deserved status just now… Anyway, if you like doom metal then you should find this re-issued double CD without any delays, find it and enjoy… Ukrainian’s doom metal pride is ready to be on your shelf!

Az 1999-ben Krivoj Rogban (Ukrajna) alakult csapat gyűjteményes, best of lemezét takarja ez a dupla kiadvány. Ha elárulom, hogy a lemezhez köze van a Solitude Productionsnek is, akkor a csapat által képviselt zenei világot nagyon könnyű belőni.
Igen, igen, doom metal, de nem funeral, hanem gótikus, bánatos death/doom. Az első disc a 2000-ben megjelent debütáló anyagot, a She’s My Griefet rejti. Kétségtelen, hogy a csapatra a Gothic/Shades Of God korszakos Paradise Lost illetve a The Angel And The Dark River környéki My Dying Bride fejtette ki a legnagyobb hatást, ennek megfelelően Vladislav Shahin énekes hangja, előadása nagyon hasonlít a fiatal Nick Holmesra illetve Aaron Stainthorpe-ra. A műfaj minden jellemzője felvonul a dalokban, a gitáron, a basszuson és a dobon kívül zongora, fuvola, hegedű, sőt, ha jól hallottam az As A Wingless Bird-ben még csembaló színesíti a dalokat, megfejelve az előírt, kötelezőnek számító szomorú hangulattal. Értelemszerűen női énekeket is hallunk a hörgést és a dallamos éneket kiegészítendő, azok Anna Dobrydneva és Oksana Krivenko (szoprán) tolmácsolásában csendülnek fel. A második korongon a 2008-as The Frankness Eve album illetve a She’s My Grief dalainak demóváltozatait hallhatjuk, megtoldva a With Every Suffering videoklipjével.
Semmi újat sem tesz hozzá az ukrán zenekar a műfajhoz, minden, ami a lemezen hallható, hallottuk már ’92-ben is. Nothing special, ahogy mondja a művelt francia.

Mournful Gust seems to be a strong player in the Ukrainian Gothic Doom Death Metal scene, I’m ashamed of never hearing anything about them until I got this pack from Solitude Prod. They started back in 1999 and the material I’m reviewing here is some sort of a anniversary release celebrating 10 years of existence. We have here a Double CD, the first CD being their debut album, “She’s My Grief” remastered, and the second one a collection of Demo tracks plus some very interesting and successful covers of their tracks made by other musicians of whom again I’ve never heard of. Well, I guess that’s the bad thing about having such an overpopulated metal scene nowadays, you can only discover a good band by luck or if you follow zines
. The underground is so crowded that rarely a band gets the recognition they deserve. Solitude is one of the most respected Doom labels out there so I’m sure Mournful Gust will get a good exposure.
I’ve listened first to the second CD, the compilation of Demo songs and covers and I have discovered a honest Doom Death band, sorrowful, powerful, emotional and expressive, one of those bands that get you thinking of lost loved ones… The addition of those covers brings more fresh touches and makes the CD even more attractive.
The next CD is actually their debut album from 2000 remastered, and as a difference from their demos here we make contact with violins, flutes and female vocals, a more Gothic influenced music, a tough decision for the band as now it gives impression of some sort of lack of cohesion. From time to time the whole sounds a bit too chaotic even if the band’s ideas are great; taken one by one each instrument does its job perfectly adding more and more grief and nostalgy to Mournful Gust’s music, but it fails to keep my attention for the whole duration of this CD (56 minutes). This will make their fans happy, but I wouldn’t recommend it to profane persons as I am.
To sum it up Mournful Gust is indeed a strong band with interesting, fresh ideas, but still keeping the “old-school” Gothic Doom Death Metal path. I should get their latest album, “The Frankness Eve” from 2008, for a coherent opinion on their actual music.

The press release sheet for this 2CD set reads re-issue of the legendary album of Ukranian Gothic doom death metal band! It also boasts that this is “state-of-the-art” music. Big claims for a band who myself up to recently and everybody else i have spoken to has never heard the band. Of course labels want to move merchandise and i have no problem with the art of selling product but legendary? One look at the album artwork and you know what to expect from this Ukranian band, its Gothic Doom/Death Metal. As the press release info states, its a re-released of a album recorded in the year 2000. On the second disc called “Decade”, you get basically a best of demo recordings from the band. One thing which i find a little strange about the re-issuing, re-mastering of the “She’s My Grief” album is the band have only recorded 2 real albums is 11 years as this third release from Mournful Gust being a re-issue of the first album recorded in 2000. This made me think this album must be something really special so i was a little disappointed to find its really no different from the endless quagmire of Goth-Doom outfits from that part of world. Is it bad?, not at all but its just so predictable in its concepts and musical delivery that i would have thought a brand new album would have been a more creative thing to do.
One element to the sound of Mournful Gust’s sound that is the vocals of Vladislav Shahin who also performs in Autumnia. The exceptional vocal delivery stands out as a feature on the recording but everything else is just well – ordinary. The songs on “She’s My Grief” were written by former guitarist Alexander Glavniy who is a accomplished musician as is all the musicians involved in Mournful Gust. I will never have a bad word to say about their musical ability, its finely tuned, classy playing throughout but the songs just don’t shine in anyway. Its for the most part, experimental and complex with the added addition of female vocals (it is Gothic Doom after-all), violins and flutes also make a appearance. There is a total of some 6 musicians in the band with 4 more adding various elements to the pieces. While heavy riffs do feature from time to time, most of the songs are based around delicate, elegant melody’s and the usual melancholic Goth trademarks. The songs do evoke some kind of atmosphere but most of it sounds tired, recycled heavily from 90′s Goth bands and lacks any real catchiness. When it does work, its pretty powerful stuff however. “Path Of My Tears” is a good track that never gets dull over the course of 8 minutes and “I Saw Her Sad Eyes” at least gets me intrigued and slightly mesmerized. The rest is pretty forgettable, standard Gothic, Death, Doom material that just bores me these days.
The second disc “Decade” is a real pain to listen to because you get three different versions of “The Cold Solitude” from the “Frankness Eve” album which is much much better than She’s My Grief” in my opinion. Even though “The Cold Solitude” is a great track, sitting through three different versions of it is just too much for me to handle and i subjected myself to this form of torture at least 6 times before starting this review. Elsewhere you get other tracks from that album including “A Pain to Remember” and “It’s Our Own Tragedy”. While these are demo versions of these pieces, they do sound good but still nothing compared to the versions on “The Frankness Eve” album released in 2008. The Decade disc is purely a “for fans only” disc and me being basically tired of the whole Goth-Doom scene anyway left me bored to tears especially towards the end of the CD. If you are a fan of the Euro-Doom scene especially the Gothic genre, you will find something to like about this though. While i have basically torn this album apart with petty judgments on Gothic Doom and the Mournful Gust’s predictability factor, the musical skills are without question, top notch. I just find the whole European fixation of Goth-Doom to be very one dimensional and very tedious these days and She’s My Grief…Decade is one of the worst examples of it. Ok start typing hate-mail now, my ranting and raving review is over.

Bei dieser Truppe handelt es sich um ein hierzulande wohl mehrheitlich unbekanntes Sextett aus der Ukraine, das seinen bereits zehnten Band-Geburtstag begeht und sich als Geschenk dafür ein Scheiblettchen eintüten hat lassen. Genauer gesagt ist es eine Doppel-CD geworden, auf der das bisherige Schaffen von MOURNFUL GUST retrospektiv verewigt wurde und einen wirklich guten Überblick über das Werk der Truppe schafft.
“She’s My Grief” nannte sich das Debütalbum im Jahr 2000 und dieses ist auf vorliegendem Doppeldecker auf CD 1 in soundtechnisch überarbeiteter Form verewigt worden. Als Nachtisch serviert man uns auf dem zweiten Silberling “Decade” eine amtliche Kollektion an Demo-Versionen weiterer Tracks, die in Summe allesamt zu schade gewesen wären, hätte man diese in der Schublade gelassen.
Betrachtet man vorliegendes Werk eingehend, lässt sich feststellen, dass die Ukrainer im Laufe der Jahre eine Stilwandlung durchwandert haben. So klingt “She’s My Grief” – das im Original aus dem Jahr 2000 stammt – deutlich experimentierfreudiger und auch vielschichtiger. Neben zwar reichlich vorhandenen harten Riffs beinhaltete die Musik von MOURNFUL GUST damals jede Menge an Anleihen aus dem Gothic-Bereich, ebenso griff man gerne auf Violinen und Flöten zurück. Weiters wäre auch noch eine Damenstimme zu nennen, die einen nicht unerheblichen Beitrag zum Gelingen des Debüts geleistet hat. Vor allem in den elegisch angelegten Momenten lässt sich aber dennoch deutlich erkennen, dass hier Metaller loslegen, denn die Basis war schon in den Anfangstagen der dem Death Metal zugewandte Gothic Doom Metal.
Und exakt dorthin führt den Zuhörer die Reise auf der Demo-Compilation “Decade”, auf der weniger ausprobiert wird, als vielmehr ordentlich zur Sache gegangen wird. Ausdrucksstarke Gesänge in untersten Stimmlagenbereich sind hier genauso wichtig für die Gesamterscheinung, wie herrlich wohlige Moll-Klangkaskaden. Im Klangbild wirkt das zwar ein wenig reduziert, auf der anderen Seite jedoch intensiver als zu Debüt-Zeiten und vor allem “jahreszeitgemäßer”, denn genau damit lassen uns die Ukrainer endgültig den Sommer vergessen.
Ein vollständiges Eintauchen in den Kosmos von MOURNFUL GUST ist jedoch absolut empfehlenswert, denn mitunter läuft man durchaus Gefahr versteckte Details regelrecht zu überhören und den Vortrag als langweilig abzutun. Doch dem ist definitiv nicht so und man täte der Truppe unrecht, schließlich verstehen es MOURNFUL GUST wirklich gut mit ihrer Mixtur, die irgendwo in der Grauzone zwischen Death / Doom / Gothic Metal anzusiedeln ist, für Atmosphäre zu sorgen und diese mit jeder Menge an Emotionen und Esprit darzubieten.
Zwar weiß ich nicht, ob sich die Band in jüngster Zeit noch weiter verändert hat, da ich ihr aktuelles Werk “The Frankness Eve” nicht in vollem Umfang kenne, sondern bloß einige Tracks davon, die als Demo-Versionen auf “Decade” zu vernehmen sind, dennoch möchte ich Genreliebhabern diese Band ans dunkle Herzchen gelegt wissen.

Ukrainalainen Mournful Gust, joka jakaa jäseniä mm. Autumnian kanssa, on julkaissut kymmenvuotisen taipaleensa kunniaksi kaksi levyä käsittävän kokoelman, joka koostuu She’s My Grief -debyytin uusintajulkaisusta, sekä levystä, joka sisältää demoja ja vaihtoehtoisia versioita yhtyeen muusta tuotannosta.
Mennään ensin kuitenkin She’s My Grief -debyyttiin. Pikaisesti kuunneltuna levy antaa vaikutelman ammattitaitoisesta, mutta valitettavasti myös varsin geneerisestä goottidoom-partiosta. Lisäkuuntelujen myötä kuitenkin yhtyeen maailma avautuu huomattavasti paremmin, ja se alkaa jopa vaikuttaa hieman tavanomaista goottidoom-ryhmää kiinnostavammalta tapaukselta. Vielä lisää kuunneltuna alkuperäiset tuntemukset valitettavasti palautuvat: ei tätä suoranaisesti voi tekniseltä kannalta katsoen haukkua, jos ei suuresti ylistääkään. Suurin koko genreä vaivaava ongelma on tietysti se, että bändeillä on taipumus kopioida soundia melko suoraviivaisesti genren isommilta nimiltä. Lisäksi murinalaulut ovat monesti sen verran kökösti toteutettuja isompiin nimiin verrattuna, että ne monesti aiheuttavat lähinnä vaivaantuneita tunteita: suuria ja synkkiä tunteita yritetään ilmaista, mutta lopputuloksena on pohjimmiltaan pelkkää teennäisen hempeää läpsyttelyä. She’s My Grief jää tämän genren levynä jotenkin kummallisesti välimuodoksi, joka ei ole niin paljoa omaperäistä jos ei täydellisen epäomaperäistäkään ja epäinspiroitunutta. Kuten jo tuli sanottua, yleisesti ottaen teknisesti bändin ulosannissa ei ole paljoa moitittavaa.
Sitten kakkoslevyyn, eli …Decade -kokoelmalevyyn. Pikaisesti kuunneltuna jälleen levyn demot ja erilaiset versiot yhtyeen muusta tuotannosta eivät tunnu suuresti poikkeavan tämän kaltaisen musiikin massasta. Myöskään toisintoina niillä ei ole mielestäni edes kovin paljoa kuriositeettiarvoa, jotta niistä jaksaisi innostua enempää kuin muustakaan yhtyeen tuotannosta.
Kokonaisuutena julkaisua voi toki suositella tämän genren suurimmille faneille, mutta muille tästä tuplasta ei varmasti ole kovin paljoa iloa.

Cult band in patria(Ucraina) e nel resto dei paesi ex-sovietici i Mournful Gust danno alla stampe la versione remastered del loro primo album. Col l’aggiunta di un bonus cd di versioni demo di brani tratti dal precedente disco e dall’attuale, la prima cosa che salta all’orecchio sono i suoni: se questa è una versione “ripulita” del lavoro, figuriamoci come suonava l’originale. Quindi, suoni soltanto accettabili. La seconda, invece, è la derivatività. Niente di originale, My Dying Bride a manetta, ma almeno con un minimo di personalità. Allora via con brani lunghi e sofferti, decadenti, romantici, che si consolidano nella durata con innesti di violini, flauto, tastiera ed in alcuni casi di voce femminile e soprano. La sensazione finale è che le potenzialità ci sono, ma queste vengono sfruttate poco a causa dei continui rimandi, e dalla troppa generosità, chiamiamola così, impiegata nel creare l’universo di dolore che nasce dalla mancanza d’amore, dall’assenza dell’amata, dalla morte della compagna. Motivo per cui a volte risulta anche un pò stucchevole, nonchè iettatorio – basta dare uno sguardo ai titoli dei brani. Il secondo cd non aggiunge nulla se non qualche versione dei brani remixed, oppure lettaralmente storpiato in quelli che sono a tutti gli effetti semplici esercizi di stile. La novità essenziale è che ora il disco è reperibile grazie al lodevole lavoro della Solitude Prod. Mentre nella sostanza ‘She’s My Grief…Decade’ resta un buon album che gode anche di un certo fascino, ma ascoltato due volte, tre volte, affiora il desiderio di rimettere nel lettore i padri del genere, quella Sposa Morente che, proabilmente, non ha ancora trovato un degno erede.
Valido reissue e poco altro.

Кто бы мог подумать что в 2000 году дебютный альбом криворожской gothic/doom/death metal группы MOURNFUL GUST – произведет своеобразную сенсацию в украинском андеграунде, и спустя 10 лет со дня его выхода на кассете, мы будем держать в руках шикарное двухдисковое переиздание. Напомню, что это уже второе переиздание этого альбома в цифровом виде, впервые диск “She’s My Grief” вышел в 2005 году на московском лейбле Metal Agen/Soyuz Music. Тогда, правда, издание получилось не особо удачным в плане звука и оформления, да и слабый промоушн релиза привёл к тому, что диск оказался практически незамеченным. На издании от BadMoodMan Music все эти недочёты устранены. Был сделан новый ремастеринг, в следствии чего на альбоме теперь нет дикого перегруза и диск слушается без напряга для ушей, а новый, красивый 16-ти страничный буклет созданный Вячеславом Смишко из Nurgeslag Art (GRIMFAITH, AUTUMNIA, TANGORODREAM), безусловно, стал одним из главных украшений на этом переиздании. Что касается содержания бонусного CD, то оно оставляет двоякое впечатление. Если кавер-версии от группы SOMNOLENT (“The First Spring without You”) и Стаса Мищенко (“I Saw Her Sad Eyes”) логично вписываются сюда (которые к тому же получились довольно оригинальными), то про остальные шесть треков я такого сказать не могу. Всё дело в том, что взяты они из второго альбома “The Frankness Eve”, который по сути никакого отношения к дебютной работе не имеет, и куда логичней они бы смотрелись на переиздании “The Frankness Eve” (если оно, конечно, будет), чем здесь. Идущий в самом конце видео-клип на композицию “With Every Suffering” – также мимо “кассы”, его надо было размещать ещё на прошлом релизе, а не тут. Жаль, что на бонусном диске не оказалось демо-версий или концертных треков периода “She’s My Grief”, вот это было бы куда интересней фэнам, чем нереализованная солянка песен с прошлого альбома. Что же касается основной программы состоящей из семи треков, то тут придраться не к чему, материал слушается просто на одном дыхании. Все любители классической doom/death metal школы просто обязаны иметь этот альбом у себя. Один из лучших релизов когда-либо выходивших на постсоветской территории

Décidément, le label Solitude Productions ne chôme pas en ce moment et nous propose des tas de groupes de doom/death, symbole même de la tristesse et de la lourdeur, du déchirement et de la désolation. Après Ophis ou même The Sullen Route, voici le tour d’un groupe Ukrainien nommé Mournful Gust, qui nous sort ici un double album, une compilation, regroupant la réédition de leur tout premier album « She’s My Grief », ainsi que des remix ou des démos versions de leur second album « The Frankness Eve » afin de fêter leur dix ans de formation (d’où le mot « decade »). Moyen efficace de se faire connaître qui plus est et de faire découvrir une musique aux relents folk malgré l’agressivité du death et la lenteur du doom. J’ai bien dit folk en effet car on retrouve par moment des chants féminins et des instruments traditionnels tels que flutes et violons, ainsi que les chœurs qui vont avec. Ce sous genre apporte d’ailleurs pas mal de couleurs et de joie à une musique pour le moins mélancolique.
She’s My Grief….
Premier CD de l’album et plus de cinquante minutes de diversité. Car en effet, on peut dire que ce terme est le maître mot de l’album. Le doom, le death, le folk, et même l’ambiant se côtoient si on en croit le premier titre, « The First Spring Without You ». Lent et terrible, avec ce clavier en arrière plan, et cette voix lamentée aux premières loges, comme un murmure dans les ténèbres. Malgré ce côté simpliste, ce morceau se veut vraiment magnifique même avec l’absence des guitares. Le clavier fait tout, la voix aussi, juste ces deux éléments et nous voilà plongés dans un abîme de désespoir.
Les autres titres sont très longs et extrêmement bien exploités puisqu’ils ne se ressemblent pas. Guitares lamentées, instruments traditionnels divers, voix tantôt claire, tantôt rocailleuse mais surtout décharnée, rythme lent et pesant, claviers…tous ces éléments contribuent à la diversité de l’album, d’autant plus que les mélodies sont bien recherchées et originales. « Path of My Tears » est sans doute la chanson la plus folk, « Where Once We Were Happy » possède des solos super émouvants et lamentés, les chœurs en arrière plan, mystérieux, apportant plus de profondeur au titre, « Sweet Embrace of Scarlet Twilight » est le titre le plus agressif où le death est bien mis en avant, les riffs, les jeux de batterie et j’en passe…
Une bonne réédition du premier album en somme où l’impossibilité de s’ennuyer prédomine. Un très bon point pour ma part qu’il me faut souligner.

Deuxième CD de l’album, voici donc quelques titres du second album de Mournful Gust en plus de nouvelles versions. Ici, même principe, si ce n’est que le tout se veut plus recherché pour ma part. « A Pain To Remember » regroupe tous les styles que j’ai pu énoncer plus tôt, et possède donc un côté progressif qu’il est impossible de louper. Que de mélanges de styles, d’autant plus qu’on peut notamment retrouver un côté dark mais aussi gothique dans les ambiances. Eh bah me direz-vous, que de diversité en somme. Eh bien oui, beaucoup de diversité et d’émotions au sein même de ce seul titre long de plus de neuf minutes. Le chant est parfait, l’instrumentation aussi, la mélodie super prenante, les solos magiques…un vrai régal.
Les autres titres sont moins longs mais tout aussi intéressants d’autant plus que le chant est de plus en plus alterné. Les harmonies sont toujours aussi belles, mélanges subtiles de contrastes entre joie/tristesse, lumière/ténèbres, etc. Le piano met en relief ces contrastes tout en jouant des mélodies qui ne nous étonnent pas. Les ambiances ukrainiennes, presque slaves, sont bien audibles comme sur « To Your Deceits…Again ».
On retrouvera la reprise de « The First Spring Without You », présente sur le premier CD de l’album mais en mode ambiant. Ici, c’est plus dans une veine doom/death, mais elle est beaucoup moins intéressante. Plus linéaire et plus longue, je n’ai pas retrouvé la force et la magnificence de la toute première version, dommage. Mais je n’ai pas dit que c’était pas bien pour autant.
La version presque électro de « I Saw Her Sad Eyes » est aussi décevante car on retrouve cette lenteur accablante car vide de sens, et cette apparition de beat électro par moment et de bruits électro. Le piano est le seul vrai fil conducteur et la voix est totalement étouffée. On croirait entendre de l’indus. Pas que je n’aime pas ça mais ça colle simplement pas avec l’identité du groupe et surtout le reste de l’album.
Enfin on retrouve trois versions de « The Cold Solitude ». La première est assez jazzy avec des instruments typiques et un rythme typique. Une basse prédominante et des trompettes. Un petit peu d’électro par moment surtout au milieu, c’es étonnant. La deuxième version est plus lente et plus fidèle au groupe mais pas aussi transcendante. Juste une guitare acoustique en tête et c’est tout. On se serait attendu à mieux. La troisième et dernière version et la version démo, donc la vrai version si je puis dire, et la mieux par ailleurs. Très fidèle au groupe pour le coup, le chant est un peu faiblard, mais les mélodies précédemment retrouvées sont là, les instruments divers aussi ainsi que les solos lamentés. Un bon titre en somme, concluant comme il faut l’album.
Une très bonne compilation pour un groupe en devenir. Mournful Gust tient le pari et nous propose vraiment quelque chose d’intéressant et varié, qui nous tient en haleine jusqu’au bout. Seules les nouvelles versions et remixes sont à rejeter mais heureusement qu’il y en a peu. Si vous voulez passer un bon moment plein de sensations et d’émotions, je ne peux que vous conseiller cet album ci, où les genres se mélangent avec précision.

It’s quite difficult to understand the reverence that Mournful Gust are held in quite frankly. They are certainly not the most prolific of artists with only two full length releases in the last ten years, and yet here we are with a 2 disc ‘Best Of’ compilation package which just reeks of shameless cash in. What we have here is yet another re-release of 2000’s ‘She’s My Grief’, and ‘…Decade’ which is a collection of demos and remixes of some of those songs and songs that comprised the 2008 follow up ‘The Frankness Eve’. My question is why? There are bands out there with much more material at their disposal who do not feel the need to do this, so what is there in this package that Mournful Gust’s fans will not already have?
So, what is so special about ‘She’s My Grief’ that warrants it being released twice in 10 years? Well, I’m really not sure having given it several listens. Firstly, for an allegedly remastered recording, the production quality is terrible, sounding almost as if it’s been transferred directly from a tape recording. The intro track ‘The First Spring Without You’, is little more than a mess with no atmosphere at all, but that’s a common occurrence. First actual song ‘Path Of My Tears’ is standard gothic doom, the kind of thing that My Dying Bride knocks out in their lunch break. The individual elements are all perfectly reasonable, with Vladislav Shahin providing a very strong vocal, reminiscent of Draconian’s Anders Jacobsson, and the guitar is suitably mournful and brooding if slightly scrappy, but the presence of the flute adds nothing to the ensemble. The drum sound sticks out like a sore thumb with its light, tinny and occasionally haphazard delivery. The thing with doom metal and its inherent low bpm rate is that it’s very easy to tell when a drummer is out of time, and Vjacheslav Kapusta generally is. The same can be said for Alexander Glavniy’s lead guitar, as he unleashes one of the worst solos I’ve ever heard on ‘Sweet Embrace Of Scarlet Twilight’. To call it disappointing would be a chronic understatement, because underneath it all there is some very good songs on ‘She’s My Grief’, they are just invariably shoddily performed.
Slipping ‘…Decade’ into the player and going straight into ‘A Pain To Remember (Demo)’, the difference is astounding. Considering that this is a demo, the quality is 3 to 4 times better than anything on the allegedly remastered main album and considerably better in musical quality too. This is far more mature, considered and mournful doom. The guitars are immeasurably more competent in the hands of Evgeny Vecher and the result is more coherent and aurally pleasing. Thankfully Mr Kapusta must have taken the lengthy time between the first two albums to invest in drum lessons, as his performance here is greatly improved, especially on ‘It’s Our Own Tragedy’, unfortunately the singer adopts a clean vocal here which comes across much like Primordial’s A.A. Nemtheanga, which whilst perfectly competent, detracts from the music and lessens the impact. Despite the early promise of ‘…Decade’, things take a big nosedive towards the end with three separate versions of ‘The Cold Solitude’, one of which is an instrumental and is seemingly remixed by what I can only assume is the Ukraine’s most influential Latino band. It’s a complete waste of time and only true Mournful Gust fanboys will find any worth in it. The final version on here is the original demo, and it is a very good song, clearly one of the redeeming features on here.
So once again, I ask, just what is the relevance in this release? A re-release of the first album, (and as I understand it, this is the second time they have done this in ten years), and a few demos and remixes. I heard ‘The Frankness Eve’ before listening to this, and was really impressed and I’d urge any of you to seek it out, but with this, I really wouldn’t bother. ‘She’s My Grief’ is vastly overrated, and to release it in that state originally, never mind the fact that it’s supposed to be a remastering…I’ve really heard far better efforts from bands who have recorded demos in their bedrooms and garages. ‘…Decade’ is worth a listen, but you’d really just be far better off with ‘The Frankness Eve’. Mournful Gust would be far better off spending their time and effort on new material rather than wasting theirs and everyone else’s time on what is a rather pointless release here. With all their effort behind an album of new songs, I’m sure that Mournful Gust will blow a mighty wind with their next release, rather than the sad fart that this turned out to be.

Судите сами: ремастеринг, новое оформление, бонусный диск, pit-art… Новое прочтение альбома “She’s My Grief” пришлось на его 10-летний юбилей. С тех пор MOURNFUL GUST прекращали свое существование, породили другую замечательную группу AUTUMNIA, вновь собрались, создали второй альбом, вновь разошлись и вновь собрались… Но тогда, в 2000 году, спустя лишь год после появления самой группы, был записан дебютный альбом и тогда же в 2000/2001 году он был выпущен на кассетах на Metal Force Records/Music Violence Productions. CD-версия увидела свет много позже – в 2005 году на лейбле Эджена Прайса MetalAgen/Союз. Первый диск “She’s My Grief” представляет собой непосредственно альбом, над которым очень плотно и педантично поработал Александр Главный (AUTUMNIA, ex-MOURNFUL GUST, ex-VAE SOLIS). Озвученные в рецензии на издание 2005 года проблемы с качеством записи были нейтрализованы настолько, насколько это было вообще возможно! Красивый, мелодичный doom metal, мягкий благодаря ненавязчивому вкраплению женского вокала, трогательных клавишных, скрипок и флейт, классический в своей сути и по своему содержанию. Как всегда в подобных случаях, не удается удержаться от фразы: “эх, да выйди этот альбом в 95-м…”. Впрочем, это ни в коей мере не умаляет красоту и очаровательность этого альбома. На втором диске расположилась обширная бонус-секция, состоящая из демо-записей к альбому “The Frankness Eve” (2008), а также признаний коллег по цеху – кавер-версий, но обо всем по-порядку. Демо-треки A Pain To Remember, It’s Our Own Tragedy, To Your Deceits… Again и The Cold Solitude ранее уже были изданы на 4-песенном promoEP 2006 года. От альбомных версий эти записи отличаются в основном качеством записи. Кавер-версия The First Spring Without You от одесситов SOMNOLENT отлично вписалась в релиз и, в то же время, внесла некоторую изюминку своим почти фьюнеральным звуком. Следующим стоит трек I Saw Her Sad Eyes, сделанный Стасом Мищенко, нынешним клавишником MOURNFUL GUST. Получился симпатичный клавишно-электронный этюд несколько в духе STILLIFE. The Cold Solitude представлен сразу двумя каверами – совершенно необычным от SOUNDFORM & PRACTICAL SENSES и акустическим инструменталом от Александра Найденова. Также на диске можно найти профессиональный видеоклип на композицию With Every Suffering со второго альбома. Отдельного упоминания стоит новое оформление – отличная новая обложка, сверстанный на твердую пятерку 16-страничный буклет, инлэй, сделанный по мотивам обложки 2005 года и pit-art на дисках.

Переиздание культового альбома “She’s My Grief”, вышедшего в далеком 2000 году на кассетах посредством Metal Force Records. На CD-носителе альбом появился в 2005 благодаря MetalAgen Records. И вот, новая реинкарнация. Хотя, назвать данную работу просто переизданием, язык не поворачивается. Альбом подвергли ремастерингу, снабдили новой обложкой и оформлением, а также бонусным диском. По поводу обложки, я правда, ни секунды не сомневался в том, что там снова, по традиции будет дама.
Так и оказалось. Очень порадовал 16-страничный буклет, все продумано и реализовано на твердые 5+. По поводу самого альбома, я думаю нет нужды расписывать снова и снова, все давным давно уже сказано и написано. В свое время альбом стал краеугольным камнем для всей украинской сцены. Что же касается бонусного диска, то на него вошел демо-альбом “The Frankness Eve” (2006), а также различные кавер версии на MOURNFUL GUST от украинских групп и музыкантов. Кроме того, присутствует также видео на вещь “With Every Suffering”. В итоге,имеем классику doom metal на всем постсоветском пространстве в новом облачении. Приобретение данного релиза даже не обсуждается, он просто обязан быть у любого думстера в коллекции.

La scuola Doom est europea è in continuo fermento, le produzioni escono una dietro l’altra senza sosta e mantenendo quasi sempre una qualità più che dignitosa. E’ il turno dei Mournful Gust stavolta, la formazione ucraina non si presenta a noi con nuovo materiale, la label BadMoodMan ha infatti deciso di dare l’opportunità a chi non avesse avuto ancora occasione di conoscerli di accaparrarsi il debutto “She’s My Grief” in versione rimasterizzata e dato lo scoccare del decennio dalla sua prima uscita arricchirlo con un secondo cd contenente la demo version di “Frankness Eve” risalente al 2006, versioni alternative di un paio di brani e il video di “With Every Suffering”, pezzo appartenente proprio all’ultimo lavoro citato del 2008.
Fortemente influenzati dai My Dying Bride e dai Tristania, quando nel 2000 rilasciarono quest’album ci si trovò fra le mani un disco che per quanto inficiato da una produzione sin troppo amatoriale, più adatta a un demo che a un disco vero e proprio, metteva in evidenza le qualità di una band che aveva ben chiare le idee su cui costruire il proprio cammino, cosa che concretizzarono appieno con il successore. Il merito di questo andava a composizioni chitarristiche virtuose ed espressive, all’uso delle voci femminili e del baritonale pulito, così come del growling.
Il genere proposto mantiene viva la chiave melodico/romantica per tutto il percorso che le tracce verranno a segnare, stavolta però il sound più limpido permette un ascolto più approfondito e di conseguenza anche più gustoso da assimilare con i vari passaggi che si succederanno nello stereo, sfiorando dei veri apici di godimento con brani quali “Once We Were Happy”, “I Saw Her Sad Eyes”, e “…And We Shall Die”.
Nello scorrere le canzoni verremo a contatto con inserti di violino, flauto e tastiere, strumento immancabile nello stile, che supporteranno l’umore sconsolato e malinconico che fornisce impronta a “She’s My Grief”.
Il secondo cd offerto come dono per l’anniversario in corso vi da l’occasione per venire a contatto con il loro secondo lavoro “Frankness Eve”, come capita di frequente in questi casi vengono inserite più versioni di un brano, la scelta è ricaduta su “The Cold Solitude” proposta per tre volte con arrangiamenti e impostazioni lievemente difformi fra le quali spicca la “soundform & practical senses version” in quanto più ricca, diversificata e inaspettata rispetto alle altre due, da citare anche l’alternativa, intrigante e quasi del tutto strumentale rivisitazione di “I Saw Her Sad Eyes” di Stas Mischenko.
Chiude il lotto bonus il video di “With Every Suffering” a completare un quadro che oltre alla versione musicale da la possibilità anche di vedere la band in azione.
“She’s My Grief… Decade” è un album diretto a chi non ha ancora incrociato i Mournful Gust, trovandosi ora a disposizione in un solo formato un’ampia visuale sul lavoro svolto dalla band sino a questo momento, al tempo stesso però può attirare l’interesse anche di chi possedendo la prima versione del platter ne vorrebbe godere appieno in questa nuova veste più curata.
Qualunque sia il vento che vi conduca in direzione di questi ucraini l’acquisto per chi segue il genere è vivamente consigliato.

Jak niewiele nam wiadomo o scenie metalowej w Rosji i krajach ościennych, które w przejściowym czasie określano jako Wspólnotę Niepodległych Państw (w skrócie WNP) świadczy choćby fakt, że jako fani metalu przeoczyliśmy na przykład ukraiński MOURNFUL GUST. Zespół może nie nadzwyczaj oryginalny, bowiem poruszający się w estetyce szeroko pojętego gothic/doom/death metalu, ale na pewno poszukujący właściwych sobie środków, by oddać mroczny klimat wsparty wyrazistą melodyką, ambitnymi rozwiązaniami czy bogactwem pomysłów oraz zaprawiony odpowiednią dawką mroku i melancholii. Mam świadomość, że takich kapel było kilkanaście lat temu na pęczki, wiele z nich sczezło i nie pozostawiło nic ciekawego po sobie, jednakże już sam fakt, że w roku 2000 młody ukraiński zespół nagrał płytę, która dobrze brzmi, przynosi sporo ciekawych rozwiązań i całkiem niezłe wykonanie wskazuje, że mimo wszystko warto było wznowić tę pozycję i paru odbiorców się na pewno znajdzie. Oprócz typowo rockowo-metalowego składu MOURNFUL GUST zaprosiło do wykonania wielu fragmentów flecistę, skrzypka oraz dwie wokalistki. W ten sposób muzyka jest wzbogacona o inne brzmienia niż jedynie powielane schematy w rodzaju: tu damy pograć gitarze akustycznej, tu damy jakieś gitarowe solo, a tu niech się “produkuje” klawisz. Ale jak wiadomo, przy budowaniu długich, ośmio-, dziewięcio- czy dziesięciominutowych utworów (a tylko takie występują na “She’s My Grief”) nie sposób popaść w pewne zbędne dłużyzny, drobne błędy czy przerost formy nad treścią, jednak pamiętajmy, że to taka estetyka i poza drobiazgami wszystko tu sztymuje i jak najbardziej odpowiada normom atmosferycznego metalu. Tym bardziej, że ukraińscy muzycy nie ograniczają się do kreowania powolnych, a przez to łatwiejszych do zagrania i nagrania rzeczy, lecz czasem potrafią też ciutkę podkręcić tempo. Przede wszystkim jednak urozmaicają utwory wieloma pomysłami (o czym już wspomniałem), przeróżnymi wokalizami i młodzieńczą świeżością. Powyższe słowa mogą tyczyć się nie tylko zawartości pierwszego dysku, czyli zremasterowanej wersji debiutanckiego albumu “She’s My Grief”, lecz także czterech kawałków z powstałego 6 lat później demo “The Frankness Eve”, a to już część bonusowego dysku pt. “Decade”, na którym oprócz tego można usłyszeć nagrane przez innych muzyków wersje różnych kompozycji MOURNFUL GUST. Tu ciekawostką są choćby mocno elektroniczna wersja “I Saw Her Sad Eyes” z debiutu zespołu w wykonaniu Stasa Misczenki, jazzowo-folkowo-taneczne wykonanie “The Cold Solitude” z drugiego krążka Ukraińców (wersja demo MOURNFUL GUST znajduje się na tym samym dysku) autorstwa SOUNDFORM & PRACTICAL SENSES i jeszcze jedno, całkowicie akustyczne i instrumentalne wykonanie tego samego kawałka, za które jest odpowiedzialny Alexander Najdenow. A na deser można zobaczyć całkiem poprawny video clip “With Every Suffering” do numeru z CD “The Frankness Eve”. Cóż tu więcej dodać? Jeśli mienicie się fanami stareńkiego grania spod znaku klimatycznego metalu mocno zakorzenionego w latach 90-ych i jeszcze Was nie przekonano, że liczą się tylko w tej stylistyce stanowczo zbyt mocno reklamowane NIGHTWISH i WITHIN TEMPTATION, to warto dać niewielką kasiorę za posiadanie tych dwóch dysków w swojej kolekcji.

Van, aki eddig is ismerte, s van aki a kritika után se fog emlékezni az ukrán Mournful Gust formációra. A csapat 1999-ben alakult és már 2000-ben kijöttek a She’s My Grief című debütjükkel, amit nagy csend után egy demó 2006-ban, majd két évvel rá a második nagylemez folytatott. A frontember (Vladislav Shahin) egyik projektjéhez már volt szerencséje általam a nagyérdeműnek megismerkedni Autumnia néven. A mostani kiadványuk egy dupla korongos best of – válogatás – gyűjtemény, vagy nevezzük bárminek is a dolgot. Természetesen a koncepció alapját az képezte, hogy az eddig ki nem adott demó, vagy kimaradt dalok vagy ismert nótáik más verziói, átiratai végre elérhetőek legyenek, de mindez felveti annak kérdését, hogy szükség volt-e ennyire magasan és igényesen közreadott archiválásra.
A válasz természetesen az, hogy korántsem, de a BadMoodMan Music és társaik mindig a maguk utjait járják, így tehát nem fogom a dolgot túl hosszúra nyújtani. Az ukrán Mournful Gust világát leginkább a korai Theatre of Tragedy-éhez tudnám hasonlítani, tipikus középtempós zakatolás, mély hörgés kíséretében, csilingelő női orgánummal, suttogással és szép szólókkal, no meg klasszikus zenei hangszereltséggel. Igazából az tudja majd ezt az egészet valósan is értékelni, aki eddig is ismerte a bandát, így a ki nem adott nóták és alternatív megoldások szelei kellemes pillanatokat fog majd szerezni annak a minimális rétegnek. A hangzás nem egységes, ahogy a dalok se, ám ettől függetlenül szép munkát végeztek a stúdióban és a külsőségek is igazán jól sikerültek, avagy éteri gothic… Ja, és akinek nem derült volna ki eddig, ukrán barátaink doom-deathben utaznak némi gothic hátszéllel megtámogatva. Míg az első lemez ragaszkodik a múlthoz, addig a második korong sokkal intenzívebben kísérletező, így tehát található rajt minimál jazz-techno elektró (kissé C=64 vagy Amigás filinggel) ilyen a The Cold Solitude (Soundform & Practical Senses version) vagy az I Saw Her Sad Eyes (Stas Mischenko version). Érdekes az összkép, egy picit kronologikus, egy csipetnyit felesleges, no de a műfaj szerelmesei ettől még mély szívdobogás közepette átadhatják magukat a ragacsos elmúlásnak…
…főleg, ha egyszer már a TOT elkurvult, a korai szintjét nem üti meg, kellemes alternatíva főleg a szláv és balkánon keresztül nézve a dolgot. A második korong, pedig tartalmaz bonusz gyanánt még egy klipet is, melyet itt is csekkolhattok:

Not a new album, this is instead a rerelease of Mournful Gust’s little-heard debut She’s My Grief, along with an extra disc of demos and alternate versions. I actually liked their last album quite well, and so I was keen to hear this, but I shouldn’t have gotten my hopes up. The production is the first problem here, as it is thin and hollow-sounding, with an uneven mix that renders it hard to listen to. The vocals are an awful sotto-voice croaking mixed in with poor growling, the female vocals providing only a little relief. This is of interest only to diehard fans of this band, as it is not really bad, but not good either, mostly just coming across as disjointed and amateurish.

Continua la rovinosa caduta in picchiata da parte della Solitude Prod.
L’etichetta russa, dopo essersi distinta per delle interessanti produzioni nei primi anni di lavoro, ultimamente sta dando alle stampe una moltitudine di uscite discografiche dal valore decisamente discutibile. La politica di produrre solamente bands provenienti dall’area dell’Europa dell’est e dell’ ex blocco Sovietico non si è rivelata vincente, essendo queste delle zone notoriamente distanti da certe sonorità e che solamente negli ultimi anni si sono avvicinate alla scena doom, risultando in ritardo di qualche decennio, con una conseguente ingenuità di suoni ed idee facilmente percepibile da chiunque segua la scena da più di un lustro.
Oggi ci giunge tra le mani il doppio degli ucraini Mournful Gust, prodotto che altro non è se non la riedizione di vecchi lavori della band; difatti il primo CD racchiude il debutto intitolato She’s My Grief, edito dalla Metal Force Records nel 2000 e ristampato nel 2005 dalla Soyuz/Metalagen con una cover differente. Il secondo CD racchiude invece il demo The Frankness Eve del 2006 – successivamente integrato per intero nell’omonimo album del 2008 – oltre ad una manciata di covers ed un video.
Per chi non li conoscesse, i Mournful Gust sono un collettivo di 7 musicisti formatosi nel 1999, alle prese con un gothic/doom non certamente brillante ed innovativo e che cavalca le tendenze mainstream tipiche dei gruppi gothic: ad esempio il dualismo tra male & female vocals, oppure l’uso del flauto che, ad onor del vero, è l’unico elemento distintivo nella musica di questi ucraini.
Lo stile delle vocals di Vladislav richiama alla mente una gran varietà di singer ben noti, saccheggiandone ora uno ed ora un altro senza aggiungere nulla di personale a quanto già proposto da altri in tempi ben più floridi. Le female vocals sono ad opera di due guest singers – una delle quali addirittura soprano – semplicemente imbarazzanti nella loro inutilità e freddezza. Le chitarre del duo Vasiliy/Evgeny si rendono protagoniste di altrettante razzie, special modo ai danni di bands come My Dying Bride e Mournful Congregation, ma senza raggiungerne i medesimi standard qualitativo/tecnico/atmosferici. In mezzo alla numerosa refurtiva accumulata dal duo, possiamo anche notare qualche pezzo di valore – sfortunatamente non supportato da una registrazione adeguata – in special modo nelle parti acustiche, le quali si riescono ad apprezzare nonostante la povertà del suono.
Per quanto riguarda basso e batteria, mi limiterò a dire che svolgono supinamente il loro ruolo senza strafare; mentre per quanto riguarda i synth, è bene aprire un capitolo a parte. Certamente Stanislav, già alle tastiere con i Requiem, è colui che riesce ad apportare un contributo personale all’interno delle composizioni della band, nonostante non sia certo un virtuoso dello strumento. I synth non ricoprono un ruolo di rilievo nell’economia dei brani dei Mournful Gust, tuttavia lo stile compositivo di Stanislav apporta delle soluzioni nuove – sicuramente provenienti dalla tradizione popolare del loro paese d’origine – che forse inizialmente possono stridere con le tipiche atmosfere doom, ma non appena metabolizzate, si riescono anche ad apprezzare.
Dulcis in fundo vorrei parlare dell’aspetto lirico/attitudinale. Sono certo che se la band fosse Italiana adorerebbero la Pausini e tutta quella sfilza di cantanti che delle pene d’amore ne hanno fatto una ragione di vita. Le donne ucraine sono famose in tutto il mondo per la loro bellezza che – a quanto pare – ha causato non poche pene d’amore ai nostri cari musicisti, spingendoli a dedicare il titolo di questo lavoro proprio ad un amore sofferto. Non so ben dire se preferisco dei riferimenti a funerali o sofferenze varie, ma titoli come The First Springs Without You, mi riportano in mente tormentoni del calibro di L’estate Sta Finendo dei Righeira. Sul secondo CD è apprezzabile una maggiore vena creativa rispetto alle produzioni più recenti, sicuramente complice una più spiccata propensione per sonorità più grevi e pesanti. Nonostante ciò non mancano le influenze gotiche, come ad esempio l’uso del flauto che dona un valore aggiunto al sound, mentre anche la produzione risulta più piena e compatta rispetto al nuovo lavoro. Un aspetto che invece rimane invariato è l’uso delle vocals, impersonali e troppo derivate anche su questo secondo disco.
Passando al discorso cover, interessante risulta quella dei Somnolent, molto dura e pesante e – a mio parere – anche migliore dell’originale. Non si può dire lo stesso della cover di I Saw Her Sad Eyes per mano di Stas Mischenko, impegnato in un remix elettronico pseudo danzabile che di certo non ha incontrato i miei gusti.
Molto più interessante invece la cover di The Cold Solitude, per la quale si sono adoperati gli sconosciuti Soundform e Practical Senses in un remix che definire alcolico è davvero dir poco.
Per concludere il video di With Every Suffering, abbastanza professionale per una band emergente come questa, non si fa certo apprezzare per le innovazioni apportate, ricalcando i classici clichés del genere – ovviamente con una protagonista femminile – tra cimiteri, statue, luoghi malinconici e flashback.
Le conclusioni si traggono da sole: finchè questi Mournful Gust non troveranno qualcosa da dire, forse è meglio che non dicano niente…

With a band name such as Mournful Gust and an album title such as She’s My Grief coupled with the genre tag Death/Doom, it’s very easy to create an image of what the band sounds like in your mind; something like My Dying Bride or Draconian I’m sure. While there many similarities to the former here, to call this worship in any way would be demeaning. The music is structured around lead melodies and yes, heavy violin work. Despite the gothic imagery this is really quite upbeat and energetic instead of the melodramatic and angsty initial ideas one leaps to.
The band play some of the most melodic and light death/doom I’ve heard, none of the riffs here are particularly heavy or menacing, even during the slowest and dirtiest moments, the lead guitar is exclusively soaring and majestic. Despite the fairly percussive delivery of the growls, the frequent juxtaposition between harsh and clean vocals neuters any sort of violent imagery. Along with the band’s fairly light core the extra use of keys and violins to fill up the sound is bombastic and lively, rather than solemn or mournful. The band simply isn’t as sad as it thinks it is, but that’s probably a good thing since the few sections soft passages (and the introduction track) are pretty poor. Mostly the band steers clear of any lame melodramatic faggotry and sticks to the lively melodies. Most of the songs have genuine soloing in them which again removes the music from any state of despair and adds a lot of colour, I wouldn’t call it virtuosity, but again it brings more attention to the epic side of the band. The whole album is generally pretty pleasant on the ears, but severely lacking in heaviness, emotion and really, substance; this is the melodeath of doom. There are a few moments where quality shines through, such the riff and violin combination a couple of minutes into “As A Wingless Bird”, but for the main part this just sort of wanders from nice melody to nice melody, merely being a pleasant background track.
The production is pretty meagre for the main part, clear and roomy, but really devoid of low end. The guitar buzz is largely thin and weak, and the keys are very sharp and thin which makes She’s My Grief a fairly neutered release. Nothing sounds obnoxious, but there’s not a whole lot of thickness or power to any element of the sound. While the band is obviously not going for a heavy production, everything goes down a little bit too easily with the choice of tones here.
While most of the music is pretty bearable, there are a couple of elements which hold back the whole album; most notably the flute and the female vocals. With the already heavy use of various orchestrations, the flute seems kind of needless, and is the only element of the band which really brings on the emasculating feelings the rest of the sound thankfully avoids. The female vocals are shrill and irritating, and slightly out of key, the best comparison I could give would be the chick from Alas trying to sing the vocals of the woman from Funeral. Luckily they are used pretty sparingly only appearing once or twice per song.
Mournful gust are a decent band, and this is a decent album, sure there’s not much in the way of memorable riffs or genuinely haunting music, but it’s certainly not a chore to listen to, and it’s not as uncomfortable as what the imagery would imply. Fans of melodic, lead driven doom should give this a listen.

Pokud se stejně jako já setkáváte s MOURNFUL GUST poprvé, vězte, že se jedná o uskupení z ukrajinského města Krivoy Rog a deska “She’s My Grief” je jejich prvotinou z roku 2000. Kotouč, který se mi dostal do rukou, však není deset let starým záznamem, nýbrž jeho reedicí obohacenou o bonusový disk s mnoha dalšími skladbami, dokumentujícími dosavadní existenci kapely. Ukrajinská hudební scéna je pro mě velkou neznámou, ale pokud bych měl soudit podle této nahrávky, dají se v jejím vývoji najít styčné body s několika tuzemskými spolky.
Třeba s počátky šumperských DYING PASSION, kteří ve své tehdejší tvorbě stejně jako MORUNFUL GUST využívali flétnu. Právě tento nástroj je na albu tím, co ho nejvíce oživuje a zároveň vytrhuje z místy hodně nepřehledného spletence kytarových melodií a riffů. Další tuzemská kapela, která mi vyvstala na mysli, byli FORGOTTEN SILENCE a i v tomto případě to byly jejich počátky, konkrétně prvotina “The Last Remembrance…”. Na této desce dodnes obdivuji její progresivitu, vychytané klávesové postupy a rafinované melodie. Ukrajinci sice nedisponují takovým hudebním potenciálem a už vůbec nejsou tolik progresivní, ale minimálně se o to snaží. Bohužel mi však přijde, že jejich snaha o progresivitu začíná i končí u využití široké škály nástrojů. Výsledkem je pouze mnohokráte ohraná melodická směsice deathu, gotiky a doomu. Tento dojem pak jenom utvrzuje uchopení mužského i ženského hlasu, mnohokráte směřujícímu k modelu “kráska versus zvíře”.
“She’s My Grief” je určitě velmi kvalitním debutem, který by si i v dnešní době zasloužil mezi konzervativci velkou pozornost. Její velkou devízou je upřímnost, se kterou MOURNFUL GUST celý materiál předkládají. Dále je to snaha o vykročení ze zažitých postupů, což se i v několika případech podařilo. Co však celkově materiál sráží k zemi, je přes dlouhou stopáž jednotlivých skladeb jejich slabá kompozice.
MOURNFUL GUST mají v dnešní době vydánu již druhou řadovku s názvem “Frankness Eve” a její vznik částečně dokumentuje druhý bonusový disk. Podle obsažených demonahrávek lze soudit, že Ukrajinci pokračují ve stopách své prvotiny a pokoušejí se i dále rozvíjet. Podle těchto dvou disků si myslím, že MOURNFUL GUST by nyní, po deseti letech existence, mohli patřit k tomu lepšímu, co na této scéně můžeme najít. I “She’s My Grief” patří s ohledem na dobu svého vzniku mezi lehký nadprůměr.

Ожившие приятные воспоминания? Да, это возможно, благодаря переизданию от BadMoodMan дебютного альбома группы Mournful Gust далёкого уже 2000 года. Альбом не открыл в своё время ни одной новой дверки, ни форточки для doom metal-сцены, но он есть, и это не может не радовать поклонников стиля, слушателей, следящих за отечественной сценой и просто, металхэдов, не лишённых тонких ощущений меланхолии и печали. Музыкальный материал хорош, ибо ортодоксален до последней ноты и тембра. Видны те истоки, которые легли в основу просто шедеврального альбома этой группы – «The Frankness Eve», а именно – классическая, но разнообразная гитарная работа, клавиши, задающие весь сюжет, но не мешающие металл-основе, уверенная и разнообразная работа ударных; глубокий гроул и фоновый женский вокал.
Ремастеринг сделал своё дело, но из г… …из некачественного оригинала конфетку сделать, конечно, не получилось. Слышны характерные для кассетных записей завалы частот, сам частотный диапазон сродни порезанному mp3. Но, с другой стороны, если бы в начале 21 века альбом вышел в нынешнем качестве, то многих не лестных отзывов просто бы не было, ибо восприятие меняется на порядок, как в части улучшенного звука, так и в части шикарной полиграфии с текстами и тематическими образными фото в стиле предыдущего релиза.
В нынешнем релизе компакт диск с оригинальным ремастированным материалом дополнен неким диском с кучей материала, как аудио, так и видео. Выглядит этот «пришлёпок» абсолютно не концептуально, т.к. материал в большей части относится к последнему альбому. В итоге, слушатель получает в нагрузку ненужный хлам, претендующий на коллекционность.
Релиз рекомендую всем перечисленным выше комрадам, а Solitude в очередной раз удивляет выпуском классического думового материала на экспериментальном подлэйбле.

The Russian label Bad Moon Man brings us the re-release of the ‘She’s My Grief’ CD that originally was released some ten years ago by Metal Agen Records. The cluttered and shallow produced Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride inspired doom metal however is hardly worth this re-release. The structures are disheveled and the female vocals are simply appalling and dreadful. The guitars on ‘Sweet Embrace Of Scarlet Twilight’ and ‘Once We Were Happy’ are like the arrangements: irritating flute and keyboards that interrupt with the flow of the song and are hesitant to mean something or do some emotional damage. Still I like the male vocals and naturally there are great parts on the mainly seriously mediocre album. As an extra we get some demo recordings of some songs of the much better second ‘The Frankness Eve’ CD. Also we get a video clip from that time (we speak of 2008). Even these demo recordings are better than the whole of the ‘She’s My Grief’ misfit, of which I truly think that the aspirations were too high for a beginning band.

A la toute fin des années 90, le groupe ukrainien Mournful Gust se formait et s’avérait d’entrée de jeu prolifique avec son premier album “She’s My Grief”. Sorti initialement en 2000 sur bande, l’album avait été une première fois réédité en CD. Aujourd’hui, le label russe BadMoodMan ressort l’objet dans une version remasterisée, avec un nouvel artwork (très gothique dans les thématiques mais très professionnel) et surtout un second CD comportant huit titres bonus ainsi qu’une vidéo.
Fortement influencé par le Doom Death torturé, à consonnances gothiques, de My Dying Bride ou d’Anathema première période, Mournful Gust avait d’emblée choisi d’accentuer les apports extérieurs à l’univers du Metal : chants féminins en contraste avec un chant rauque Death ou pleuré typiquement gothique, claviers sinistres presque planants (« The First Spring Without You »), violon (« Path Of My Tears », « Once We Were Happy »), flûte.
La bonne volonté du guitariste et compositeur Alexander Glavniy ainsi que celle de ses comparses interprètes conférait à cet album un cachet underground encourageant, sans pour autant gommer le trop grand classicisme des plans Metal utilisés et une production étriquée qui rognait les ambitions réelles du groupe.
Cette réédition de « She’s My Grief » peut toutefois intéresser les fans de Doom Death peu connu. Les huit titres figurant sur le second CD sont pour l’essentiel des démos enregistrées en 2009 et qui dévoilent un groupe toujours très classique dans son approche mais beaucoup plus affuté. Le chant de Vlad Shahin a notamment gagné en assurance et en efficacité. Qui plus est, le son de ces démos de 2009 s’avère de meilleure qualité que celui de « She’s My Grief », ce qui ne gâte rien. Figurent également trois versions du morceau « The Cold Solitude » : une instrumentale folklorique et technoïde à la fois, une instrumentale et acoustique, la dernière avec Mournful Gust au complet (la meilleure).

Помню выступление украинцев Mournful Gust на третьем “Московском думовом фестивале” 2008 года, – они тогда открывали вечер. Эти мужчины были наряжены в кожаные штаны и белые рубашки с кружевами, – этакие барочно-романтические фигуры с налётом советчины. Исполняли эти персонажи бодрый дэт-дум во вкусе My Dying Bride, один раз мне даже показалось, что звучит кавер. На самом деле, каверов не было.
Так что с этими ребятами нам всё ясно. Остаётся послушать юбилейное двухдисковое издание “She’s My Grief… Decade”, где нам предлагается ремастерированная версия дебютного альбома “She’s My Grief” 2000 года и сборник “Decade” с демками для второго альбома “The Frankness Eve”, несколькими каверами и видео-клипом на песню “With Every Suffering” со второго альбома.
Альбом звучит хорошо. Никаких шумов или перегруза, что, по слухам, было на оригинальном CD-издании пластинки. Материал – стандартный дэт-дум. Вспомните что-нибудь сопливое у MDB, и вы поймёте, что здесь записано. Тем не менее, криворожцы (люди из Кривого Рога, а не с кривыми рожами) пытаются сделать песни поинтереснее с помощью клавиш, скрипок, флейт и женского вокала. То есть, доля слизи увеличивается. Хотя, флейта в песнях “Once We Were Happy” и “As A Wingless Bird” звучит действительно интересно. А вот вокальные фокусы здесь, пожалуй, потребуют предварительного расположения слушателя, – с непривычки эти стоны и оперные завывания, что у твоего Шаляпина, несколько обескураживают. Даже Аарон, сами знаете откуда, не так экстремально ноет.
У альбома есть, конечно, и положительные стороны. Музыка местами действительна приятная. Атмосфера, красота, все дела. Есть хорошие риффы, женский вокал вроде не противен, да и гроул у Влада Шахина что надо. Он, кстати, насочинял для альбома томных текстов о разлуке и боли утраты. Ошибок наделал море, – правописание и выбор слов у дяденьки сильно хромают. Но интересно другое, – эти стихи были написаны до разрыва Шахина с подругой. То есть, Влад сам себе напророчил разлуку, боль и душевные томленья. Воистину, слово материализуется! При написании лирики к пластинке “The Frankness Eve” дяденька следил за собой и был осторожен…
55 минут звучания альбома расшиты кружевами – совсем как рубашки музыкантов. Кружева из женского вокала и флейт воспринимаются весьма хорошо. А вот украшения в виде гитарных соло порой вызывают недоумение: налицо уклон в псевдоклассическое мелодичное нарезание, пресное на вкус и нелепое на вид. Хотя, конечно, есть места, где гитарист не ударяется в виртуозничание и выдаёт просто красивые атмосферные лиды. Собственно, красоты и атмосферы на альбоме ложкой ешь. Забудем о путоватом интро и получим пятьдесят минут красивого дэт-дума, оценить который можно на 6 или 7 баллов из 10. Засим перейдём ко второму диску.
Демки ко второму альбому радуют более плотным материалом, прибавившим в весе и жёсткости. Исчезло женское пение, хотя остались клавиши, скрипки и флейты. Кроме того, Влад Шахин форсировал свой чистый вокал, избавившись от нытья и занявшись серьёзными делами. Очень приятно слушаются демо-записи.
Так же приятно идёт могучий кавер на песню “The First Spring Without You” от ВИА Somnolent. Удивительно, под этим названием на альбоме идёт невнятное интро, а Somnolent сделали из него лихой боевик с тяжелейшим звуком. Отлично!
Разогретого таким образом слушателя со всей силы лупит по маковке электронный ремикс на песню “I Saw Her Sad Eyes” авторства некоего Стаса Мищенко. Ремикс освежает.
Очевидно, этот элегантный ход должен подготовить нас к троекратному прослушиванию песенки “The Cold Solitude”, пусть и в разных вариантах. Сначала мы слышим зажигательную пляжную версию в стиле… ммм… не знаю даже, как обозвать эту плясовую чертовщину… На дискотеке хорошо пойдёт, наверное. Затем следует расслабляющая акустическая инструментальная пьеса. И наконец, мы слышим родную демку от самих Mournful Gust с дико страстным чистым вокалом и разухабистой мелодией, отлично использованной в танцевальной версии два трека назад.
Ещё можно посмотреть красивый клип на красивую песню. Никакой иронии.
В целом, второй диск получился интересным. Не могу сказать, что более интересным, чем альбом, но вполне приятным. Весь релиз заслуживает внимания, пусть и не такого большого, как то пророчит пресс-релиз. Но любителям дэт-дума должно понравиться.

Da skal vi tilbake til den ukrainske septetten som leverte et meget bra album for et par år siden. Det er intet nytt material som møter oss på denne utgivelsen, da det er en dobbel-cd som tar for seg debutalbumet deres og en oppsamling av demolåter og tolkninger som andre band gjør av deres låter. Jeg aner ingenting om hvilke midler og ressurser som har vært tilgjengelig for bandet rundt 2000, så «She’s my Grief» blir bedømt utfra dagens standarder. Det som møter deg på albumet er et særdeles uferdig band som definitivt har stå-på-vilje og en vital forståelse av den romantiske delen av Death/Doom-genren, men de faller fullstendig igjennom på den lydmessige biten og til tider på det arrangementmessige. Ikke i den forstand at lyden er elendig, men de mangler en sammenheng mellom alle instrumentene. Man kommer aldri forbi musikerne som står i studio og strever så mye med å spille inn sin del at de helt glemmer å ta hensyn til hva de andre gjør. Trommene funker for eksempel ikke i det hele tatt sammen med gitarriffene. Og den malplasserte tverrfløyta som dukker opp i tide og utide!? Det den presenterer i seg selv er fint nok, men igjen; hører den i det hele tatt på hva som skjer ellers i låta? Det hadde vært mer interessant med en re-innspilling av alt materialet, for det er et potensial her, men det er vanskelig å bedømme uten illusjonen om at man hører på musikk. Kompilasjonscd-en inneholder fire demolåter som ble å finne på «The Frankness Eve» og allerede her er det en markant økning i kvalitet på alle områder fra debuten. Det er forøvrig disse fire låtene som finnes på 2006-demoen deres. Deretter følger det fire tolkninger av låtmaterialet deres gjort av andre artister. To av låtene kommer fra den grusomme debuten, mens «The Cold Solitude» fra andrealbumet blir gjort i to ulike versjoner. Graden av gjennomførthet er høyst variabel, for å si det mildt… Den tekniske og designmessige biten rundt utgivelsen er av høy klasse (som alltid fra denne russiske labelen), men det er ikke til å komme bort fra at innholdet kun er for hyperblodfans og bandet selv. Den «høye» karakteren (bonuspoeng for demolåtene og den akustiske coveren) til tross; resten av verden kunne fint vært spart for denne utgivelsen.

Iniziatori, o comunque tra le prime bands, ad impostare in territorio sovietico una uscita da confini del Doom Metal classico, gli ucraini Mournful Gust tornano sul mercato con questa riedizione del proprio primo studio album intitolato “She’s My Grief… Decade”. Il lavoro comprende due cd, il primo di questi è come già detto l’album del 2000 “She’s My Grief”, il secondo è invece un bouns platter contenente versioni demo ed alternative di brani del secondo album “The Frankness Eve” (2008) con l’aggiunta di una traccia video.
Prescindendo dai meriti della band e dalle composizioni, che lasciano trasparire un sostrato compositivo ancora acerbo, la pecca fondamentale di questo album (almeno per ciò che concerne il primo cd) è la produzione indissolubilmente legata al lontano anno 2000. Detto questo bisogna però affermare che il Death/Doom Metal della band risulta ancora oggi ben congeniato e profondamente elegante, grazie soprattutto all’uso di strumenti classici (flauti e violini) e alle massicce vocal da soprano di Oksana Krivenko. Tale comparto di natura classica, bene si adagia sulle strutture delle sette tracce malinconiche che la band mette in campo e crea delle atmosfere particolarissime ed emozionanti, come accade per “…And We Shall Die Together” o per “I Saw Her Sad Eyes”, pezzi che nonostante il corso degli anni, sono ancora capaci di reggere il confronto con le più moderne produzioni del genere in esame.
Per ciò che invece concerne il secondo cd che compone questa riedizione, beh questo è da prendere come un piccolo regalo che la band fa ai propri fans, anche perché il materiale in esso contenuto è già edito, anche se in forma diversa e non aggiunge nulla al corso musicale degli ucraini.
In conclusione, se avete apprezzato l’ottimo “The Frankness Eve” e volete scoprire le origini della band, questa è una opportunità più che buona, per far vostro anche un cd di materiale bonus, se invece non possedete nulla dei Mournful Gust, il mio consiglio è di andare a scoprirli proprio con il lavoro del 2008.

Russian-based label Bad Moon Man has decided to re-release She’s My Grief, a legendary album by Ukranian Gothic/doom/Death/prog Metal band Mourful Gust.
The album material has been fully remastered and the production is simply amazing and a true pleasure for ears. Furthermore; it has been supplemented with a bonus CD containing their 2006 demo The Frankness Eve, cover versions of MR-songs by some invited musicians. Also interesting video for the track “With Every Suffering” is to be found here.
I esp. enjoyed the appalling and dreadful operatic female voices of Anna Dobrydneva, but also the overall structures are pleasant. I like the general mournful, melancholic and emotional side the band presents here; while the irritating flute parts (performed by Alexander Ulanov) and keyboards (Artem Lygun) are something that is annoying and repetitive.
On the more positive note I would point to the guitars; being razor sharp, heavy and dominating the overall sound picture.
However; is that with this new-found and enforced power She’s My Grief proves to be still state-of-the-art piece of music coming from Eastern Europe.
Esp. recommended for the fans of Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bide, Saurnus and such.

Мода на юбилейные переиздания классических альбомов добралась и до нашего
рынка. Вот только если на Западе такой чести удостаивается настоящая
классика жанра, а юбилей подразумевает под собой внушительные цифры 30, 25,
ну или на крайний случай, 20, то у нас всё оказывается скромнее и
прозаичнее. Вышедший в 2000 году альбом украинской группы Mournful Gust
‘She’s My Grief’ по тем временам оказался хоть и далеко не революционной
пластинкой (в Европе с подобной музыкой наигрались ещё в середине 90х), но
всё же по местным меркам заметной и интересной работой. Красивый и
эмоциональный дум подкупал именно своей эмоциональностью, а не техничностью
или фирмовым саундом. Тем не менее, на российском лейбле BadMoodMan Music
приняли решение переиздать этот диск к 10-летнему юбилею релиза, и сделано
это было на достойном уровне. Ремастированный альбом зазвучал несколько
лучше, хотя и не идеально, но главным подарком фэнам стал бонусный CD, на
котором можно найти 4 композиции с демо ‘The Frankness Eve’ (2006),
несколько каверов на песни Mournful Gust, а также мультимедийный клип “With
Every Suffering”. Я бы ещё заменил стандартную “стекляшку” на приятный
дигипак – и тогда бы это переиздание стало настоящим коллекционным релизом!

Mournful Gust is some case in the Russian Doom scene. First, because it is almost the first band of its kind to emerge on the Doom scene in 1999. Secondly, because their music is very special. Mournful Gust never hid the pleasure they get in mixing very diverse genres, and this reissue of their debut album (released on cassette in 2001) demonstrates that.
The first CD is the album ‘She’s My Grief’. What is on: sophisticated Gothic/Doom with alternating male/female voice, flute and keyboards, melodic solos overflowing on a Doom/Death rythmic – sometimes bringing to mind to the early efforts of Dream Theater – while not hesitating at times to navigate into purely Folk/Viking Metal but without ever sounding like a late night of the german Oktoberfest. More like a country fest under the Tsars.
Feelings are perfectly rendered; that typical melancholy that I tend to associate with the Slavic soul is fully present and shows up in the various songs without never sounding clichй while avoiding the trap of repetition. When you see the conditions under which the album was originally recorded, and with the limited equipment available to the band, you are amazed by the fact that a simple sound lifting is enough to challenge the modern releases. Another positive surprise: the singer speaks with a really good english accent; many Russian bands scarcely master that somewhat exotic language.
The second CD is made of unreleased tracks, under the appellation ‘… Decade’. There are four demo versions of tracks that have been released on the second 2005 album, ‘The Frankness Eve’: A bit more sophisticated than what can be found on ‘She’s My Grief’ “, the music is still pure Gothic/Doom: note, however, the appearance of excellent clear male vocal lines. It is thus relatively calm, yet sad. You also find the clip of ‘With Every Suffering’, the full-set with all genre’s clichйs (marble statue, young girl in white silk, lake, derelict castle, all filmed in black and white)…
And finally, the remixes. These are very good, even if they may hurt the sensitivity of pure Metal fans. ‘The First Dream Without You’ is reworked in a Dream/House version; ‘I Saw Her Sad Eyes’ is pure Slavic folk music when ‘The Cold Solitude’ gets a ‘Goa’ treatment at first, then an acoustic version. This will require some open mind to get into this part of the disc but, as unusal as these exercises are, the remixes are all successful and interesting.
This new edition allows you to rediscover a great band that unfortunately went somewhat unnoticed in our countries. What is amazing when you see the western approval rating of Autumnia, the other band of Mournful Gust’s singer and guitarist. Anyway, if you are looking for an album that is both quiet and melancholic, get this ‘She’s My Grief … Decade’: in the genre, it is a little gem that deserves your interest.

Non allarmatevi ragazzi perché questo non è il nuovo lavoro degli ucraini Mournful Gust, bensì la loro etichetta ha pensato bene di raccogliere in 2 cd, il disco d’esordio dei nostri, completamente rimasterizzato, più versioni demo, alternative di alcune altre songs del combo est europeo. Il risultato? Beh, come potete ben immaginare da un cultore del genere come il sottoscritto, non potete che attendervi buone parole. Si sente subito che non si tratta di pezzi proprio attualissimi, visto che il cd risale al 2000, e dove forti sono le influenze dei gruppi storici della scena dell’epoca, con i Tristania e i primi Within Temptation come influenza basilare per l’alternanza di growling maschile e angeliche e soavi voci femminili. Devo aggiungere che il sestetto di Krivoy Rog (città ben più famosa per detenere il record di città più lunga al mondo) affonda le radici del proprio sound anche nelle produzioni “Pentecost III” e “The Silent Enigma” degli Anathema, quando ancora il growling prima di Darren White, poi di Vincent Cavanagh, si inseriva in un contesto altamente malinconico/deprimente. E cosi le songs di “She’s My Grief”, accompagnate da struggenti violini e inquieti flauti, permeati da una intrinseca inquietudine di fondo dettata dai suoni irrequieti delle chitarre, mettono in mostra le indubbie qualità compositive dell’act della ex repubblica sovietica. Difficile scegliere una song che possa svettare sulle altre in quanto la qualità della proposta è comunque medio alta. Forse la cosa che faccio più fatica a digerire ora come ora, è la presenza del soprano Oksana Krivenko, ma basta farci un attimo l’orecchio per poter godere appieno delle lunghe songs offerte. Il cd “Decade”, come dicevo, è una sorta di regalo per i fan più accaniti, con demo version del secondo lavoro della band, “The Frankness Eve” (incluso anche il video clip di “With Every Suffering”) e altre songs completamente rivisitate in più modi (è il caso di “The Cold Solitude”). Che altro aggiungere, se non che, se siete fan del genere death doom, non potete far mancare questo cd nella vostra collezione, in attesa che un nuovo lavoro sia rilasciato dai Mournful Gust.
