This is the first full-length of this Greek band featuring guest vocals from the frontmen of Saturnus and Ataraxie creating a colossal atmosphere of dread and isolation. The keyboards play like a piano as opposed to a synth adding this ethereal quality that just broods sadness and desperation as the gutteral vocals bring in the evil and darkness that makes this genre its own. The epic closer “The Utter Void”, clocking in at 18 minutes is the sole reason to buy this album if it really needed a push… classic epic doom with gutteral vocals and lots of dynamics!!!!! Coming form someone deeply into Solitude Aeturnus, that should last sentence should hold some weight. Definitely another one next to the other two that needs to be heard, you can even make out the dark poetic lyrics which makes it even more rewarding.

This is the debut full-length from Greek six-piece Shattered Hope, they have also released two demos. The music is best described as melodic and atmospheric Death/Doom Metal, although there are hints of both classical Doom Metal and Funeral Doom. The music is. Of course slow and quite diverse, besides the heavy riffing there is a lot of different things happening. They infuse the music with both keyboards, violin and cello, as well as several layers of melodic guitar work. Interesting stuff, very dark and sombre and very atmospheric.

Goth-doom-death classico questo dei greci Shattered Hope, ma convincente, pesante ed atmosferico, melodico e di pari passo malinconico. ‘Absence’ si trascina tutto il peso del suo significato, colonna sonora che decanta e lamenta dell’Assenza e lo fa generando brani dall’incedere lento, tombale, gravidi di arrangiamenti vincenti ed evocativi. Uscito inizialmente nel corso del 2010 come autoproduzione, e con un artwork diverso dall’attuale pubblicato dalla prolifica russa Solitude Productions, è un disco ricco di pathos, e se consideriamo si tratta di un debutto, allora l’esaltazione cresce esponenzialmente. L’unica pecca è la mancanza di originalità, ma certo a mancare non è la personalità che si impersonifica essenzialmente nella figura del vocalist Nick, caronte dal growl cavernoso ed animalesco che ti conduce fin dentro i meandri più bui delle tracce con una naturalezza ed un’espressività disarmanti. Quindi lo spettro dei My Dying Bride – più di ogni altra band – sempre presente, ma è ispirazione e mai devozione. Struggente, dolorosa, romantica, ‘Absence’ è un’opera di qualità, a tratti anche commovente che soprende per i suoi clamori e le sue suggestioni autunnali, poetiche, tormentate, che non sconfinano mai nella banalità e che sapranno donare momenti di intensa riflessione sul senso di perdita che ci travolge giorno dopo giorno.

Pour leur premier album, les Grecs de SHATTERED HOPE ne font ni dans la prudence, ni dans la demi-mesure.
Jugez plutôt : un titre d’ouverture, « Amidst Nocturnal Silence », de 13 minutes et un titre de clôture, « The Utter Void », de 18 minutes (sans compter deux autres titres, « Vital Lie » et « Enlighten The Darkness », qui frôlent les 9 minutes). Certes, nous ne sommes pas à la pesée des bestiaux mais c’est dire que SHATTERED HOPE est fermement décidé à creuser son sujet.
Son sujet justement. Un Doom Death incroyablement lourd, pesant, claustrophobique, désolé. Chaque riff pèse des tonnes et semble tomber d’une falaise. Peu original mais bien maîtrisé, le chant est caverneux et lancinant. La section rythmique martèle pesamment, sans chercher les fioritures qui diversifieraient le propos. Tout juste constate-t-on une accélération relative mais très puissante sur un « Yearn » proprement dévastateur, suivie d’une autre sur un « Traitor’s Kiss » aux relents presque Black Metal.
Fort opportunément, des arrangements mélodiques densifient l’ensemble, tout en le diversifiant. Les claviers confèrent plus souvent qu’à leur tour une aura grandiose à une base musicale austère, un peu comme surent si bien le faire les précurseurs MORGION.
Pour la suite, SHATTERED HOPE aura tout intérêt à laisser libre cours à une personnalité encore trop marquée par les codes du Doom Death et des arrangements atmosphériques. Cela dit, avec un tel début, nul doute que l’on peut s’attendre dans un futur proche à une désolation encore plus grande. Exactement ce pour quoi nous écoutons ces genres musicaux…

Свой дебютный альбом греческая шестерка Shattered Hope записывала долго и обстоятельно – с 2002 года, когда музыканты собрались вместе под этим названием, ими были реализованы всего две демо-записи (что, согласитесь, не много), которых вполне хватило некоторым немногочисленным обладателям их копий, чтобы ожидать от долгостроя по имени «Absence» чего-то, по меньшей мере, интересного и познавательного. Разумеется, команда, назвавшаяся «Разрушенной Надеждой» (что, к счастью, не стало пророчеством для тех, кто ждал выхода этого релиза) должна играть doom, лучше всего со следами death metal и «похоронными» интонациями, и лучше всего как можно более атмосферный и предельно трагичный, чтобы клавишные пассажи, сменяющие все нарастающее напряжение неистовых гитар, падали льдинками застывших слез, а симфонические вставки растекались на заднем фоне серыми сумерками. Греки все это делают, и делают успешно – разумеется, они идут проторенной тропой и отголоски звучания многих культовых коллективов и альбомов, не вчера увидевших свет, слышны на каждом шагу, но все это реализовано настолько грамотно и с уважением, что не вызывает ни малейших вопросов. В каждой ноте, в каждом лязгающем death`овом риффе, в каждом параллельном движении сложных и эмоциональных гитарных партий, в каждой пульсации медленного ритма слышны годы упорной и аккуратной работы, когда выверялся каждый штрих. Помимо самых участников коллектива, к записи были привлечены вокалисты других греческих команд, а также несколько музыкантов с достаточным уровнем образования, что позволило им извлекать из скрипок нечто большее, чем тоскливый писк раздавленного комара. Добавьте еще безупречный студийный звук – и вы получите релиз, который полностью погружает слушателя в свой мир. Это не песни, это, скорее, картины, наглядно демонстрирующие истории человеческих страстей, разрушенных ожиданий, перечень потерь и редких находок. Или, если хотите, это еще и эпизоды долгого путешествия – по выжженной земле в самые темные уголки внутреннего «Я». Правда, в этом мрачном странствии всегда найдется маяк (см. обложку диска, очень красивую, хотя лично я задал бы пару вопросов типографии, которая печатала тираж, очень уж темной она вышла, отчего многие детали просто не видны), который посветит в темноте. Светит он и в самом финале «Absence», на последних минутах «космической» композиции «The Utter Void», на секунду-другую давая понять, что в жизни всегда есть место надежде.

I know Shattered Hope from Greece since their 2005 demo, at that time they were playing a very atmospheric version of death/doom metal in the vein of My Dying Bride of mid-90′s.
Now after five years we have a mature band that wants to express the full potential available in their first full-lenght album, ‘Absence’ for russian label Solitude Prod.
And it’s soon clear that all the time passed has been very productive for the songwriting of the band, since now they have their own sound, that starting from classic death/doom it winkles sometimes to funeral doom, sometimes to death metal, into something more personal and detailed, without forgetting the influences of the past.
Melodies and atmospheres (“Vital Lie”), aggressive parts where we have up-paced tempo (“Yearn”) or the long and final “The Utter Void” that can easily sum up all these features of the greek band. If sound has been a little developped, the lyrical asset has remained the same, I’d say the typical impersonal and existential issues related lyrics, quite boring indeed, but music itself is more than enough to let us enjoy more than one hour of pounding doom metal!

On dit parfois que le doom du sud, provenant des pays chauds et parfois exotiques, ne parvient pas à être aussi caverneux, écrasant et froid que le doom du nord (de la Scandinavie ou même de Russie), que sa force est happée par une myriade de mélodies et que la puissance destructrice des vocaux lamentées ne sont pas à la hauteur. Mais Shattered Hope, formation grecque de surcroît, prouve avec la sortie de ce « Absence » que tout n’est que préjugés.
Shattered Hope avait déjà charmé un certain public avec la sortie d’une première démo quelques années auparavant, démo étant presque passée inaperçue mais ayant cette particularité de présenter le groupe et son style, une sorte de doom funéraire agrémenté d’éléments death. « Absence », album à part entière, prouve bel et bien le talent de ce combo, qui arrive à faire dans la délicatesse et la finesse, mais aussi la lourdeur. Car l’ensemble, malgré les origines chaleureuses de Shattered Hope, se veut plutôt froid et sombre, même si les mélodies et les grandes nappes de claviers sont des plus importantes.
Si la pochette déjà très ténébreuse où se pose un phare pris dans une tempête ambrée pose le décor, la musique, elle, ne fait qu’accentuer cette impression de noirceur et de lourdeur. Car outre cet enchaînement de titres pour le moins très long (le maximum étant 18 minutes), l’album est irrémédiablement composé de vocaux graves et rocailleux, déchirés et lamentés, paradés par les plaintes très expressives des guitares aux riffs pourtant simplistes mais efficaces. Ces mêmes riffs flirtent souvent avec le death comme sur « Vital Lie », « Yearn » ou « Enlighten the Darkness ». Les claviers presque omniprésents renforcent cette sensation de froid, mais procurent parfois, paradoxalement, une légère sensation de chaleur, sensation aussitôt perdue inlassablement dans un élan de lamentation et de tristesse, elles-mêmes alourdies de nouveau par des riffs ténébreux.
La production, très bonne et lisse, Solitude Productions oblige, permet à l’auditeur de mieux ressentir les ambiances et les mélodies. Mais il est vrai qu’elle peut avoir tendance à justement nous extraire du gouffre, des abysses profonds dans lesquels on aurait pu se perdre. Certes, la musique peut être écrasante sur certains morceaux, mais à la longue et au fur et à mesure de ce « Absence », les parties les plus aériennes, atmosphériques, font perdre aux compos leur impact martial et terriblement mélancolique.
L’autre point négatif, c’est le morceau « A Traitor’s Kiss », lamenté peut-être, mais extrêmement répétitif et long. Les claviers sont trop dominants et, il faut le dire, gâchent l’ensemble de ce morceau. Et pour clôturer le tout, les vocaux, à la limite du clair, sont peu ancrés dans les structures…
Cela fait de ce « Absence » un bon album, relativement au dessus de la moyenne et permettant aux grecques de prouver leur talent et de renverser la tendance actuelle, même si, comme on le dit, une fois n’est pas coutume. A écouter donc pour les amateurs de doom, mais aussi de mélodies pourquoi pas.

Il Doom/Death atmosferico o se volete con derivazione gotica (spesso le due cose coincidono a seconda dell’interpretazione di chi ascolta la musica) è un genere che non ha bisogno di sperimentazioni e genialità illuminanti per esaltare, ha invece una necessità strabordante di personalità e capacità di far grondare le note di passionalità scura ed emotivamente sul malinconico andante sfiorando le rive del funereo.
I greci Shattered Hope sono una di quelle formazioni che attendevo al varco, dopo il demo “A View Of Grief” (2005) e un promo (2007) è giunto nel 2010 il momento in cui gli sforzi confluissero in una prova di maggior spessore e durata, è così che sotto l’egida ala della russa Solitude Productions viene rilasciato “Absence”.
Il background musicale attinge dalla primordialità dei Katatonia e My Dying Bride degli anni Novanta e trova punti di contatto con act come Officium Triste, Ethereal, Saturnus, una belle miscela greve, slow motion addicted che segna l’ora e poco più di durata del platter.
I brani non si distaccano notevolmente da una riproposizione canonica ma ben composta ed eseguita, sono le minuzie, gli accorgimenti a fare però la differenza, in primis è da sottolineare il fantastico lavoro svolto della tastierista Eugenia, ogni sua incursione, semplice accompagnamento o solo apparizione fugace riesce ad apportare il dovuto quid emotivo che adorna il pezzo caratterizzandolo e “Enlighten The Darkness” n’è l’esempio più fulgido.
E’ ben strutturata del resto anche l’intelaiatura del riffing che i chitarristi Thanos e Sakis costruiscono parte dopo parte facendo sì che l’opener “Admist Nocturnal Silence” sia seducentemente pericolosa, il mid tempo di “Yearn” divenga avvincente e serrato e la lunga, tortuosa e ambiziosamente epicheggiante “The Utter Void” alterni la potenza di riff schiacciasassi al vuoto etereo chiudendo un percorso in cui la melodia ha avuto in maniera costante voce in capitolo.
Trattamento separato merita lo strumentale “Lament, In F# Minor”, la musica si prende una pausa dalle sonorità aspre, dal growling allungato e calzante per lo stile di Nick addentrandosi in lande dove gli archi e il pianoforte divengono presenza carezzevole e obliante, esaltano il potenziale massiccio degli Shattered Hope tramutandolo in una leggiadra rappresentazione in note dedita alla dimenticanza.
Abbellito ancor più dai camei offerti in “Vital Lie” e “Traitor Kiss” dalle voci di Jo “Marquis” degli Ataraxie e Thomas A.G. dei Saturnus, “Absence” è un gran disco, curato sotto tutti gli aspetti fondamentali per sostenere un’opera del genere, non ultima la produzione che ben si presta a fornire una idea chiara sia della fase strumentale che delle atmosfere create.
Siamo davanti a una ex promessa divenuta oggi solida realtà, se riusciranno a mantenere in futuro i valori espressi sin qui potrebbero ricoprire un ruolo rilevante in una scena doom che dona sempre grandi sorprese e riconosce i meriti di chi ha ben lavorato, gli Shattered Hope sono decisamente fra questi.

In de juni/juli editie van vorig jaar besprak ik dit album van het Griekse Shattered Hope al. Hoewel ik er niet al teveel woorden aan vuil maakte was de boodschap wel duidelijk, ‘Absence’ is een erg degelijk melodieus doom/death album. Het Russische label Solitude Productions was dezelfde mening toegedaan en bood een contract aan en heeft het album nogmaals uitgebracht. Het is nu dus beter te krijgen en dat is mooi want ‘Absence’ is nog steeds de moeite waard. Het artwork is ook aangepast en door de Nederlander Geert van Mook gemaakt. Aan mijn mening is ook niets veranderd en inmiddels heb ik de band een paar keer live aan het werk gezien en ook dan laten zij horen dat het een prima band is in het straatje van acts als Saturnus en My Dying Bride.

Пожалуй стоит рассказать поклонникам дум-металлической музыки о важном релизе конца ушедшего 2010 года, который грех пропускать. Итак греческие funeral death-doom’стеры Shattered Hope выпустили свой первый полноформатный альбом «Absence», который был издан на Solitude Prod. в России. До этого на счету группы имеется лишь демо (2005) и промо (2007) альбомы, которые ребята свободно распространяли в Интернете, помимо всего прочего свободно общаясь с другими металхедами по всему миру. Еще тогда после выхода их промо столкнулся с их творчеством и понял, что их музыка не унылый проходняк. К тому же в 2009 году Shattered Hope были заявлены на фестиваль Metal Heads Mission в Крым, но к сожалению группы в лайн-апе в конечном счете не оказалось.
Перейдем собственно к альбому «Absence», который состоит из семи композиций. Диск и буклет оформлены в черных тонах, а считываемая поверхность CD отливается золотым цветом. Обложка альбома – маяк посреди темного бушующего моря, красивая работа. В буклете можно найти тексты песен, фото группы. С самого начала прослушивания появилось ощущение, что группа определенно выросла в плане качества саунда. Первый трек Amidst Nocturnal Silence с самого начала загружает слушателя фьюнеральным грузом и соответствующим отчетливым гроулингом. Прослушиваются различные характеры, а также появляются разнообразие ритм-секции, мелодичные эпизоды, но в конечном счете 12-минутный трек заканчивается офигительным гитарным соло-куплетом, который четко и ясно говорит – «Я из Греции, родины Septic Flesh и Rotting Christ». Вот это именно то, за что греки уникальны и просто фантастические – по выдумыванию соляков и к тому же со своим специфическим звучанием. Второй и третий трек продолжает мелодичную волну. Здесь с большой интенсивностью появляются эпизоды с красивейшими мелодичными мотивами, они просто хитовые! Ритм-секция то ускоряется, то замедляется. Все больше разнообразия, мелодий и оттенков, которые наполняют гитары и клавишные, мягкий бас, скрипки и виолончели, всякие хорусы, вокалы – как спойные речитативные, так и депрессивные. Стоит отметить, что на альбоме присутствуют дополнительные вокалы от фронтменов Saturnus и Ataraxie. Кстати именно преславутую датскую группу Saturnus больше всего напоминает греческий альбом «Absence» – из-за ярких душераздирающих гитарных мелодий. Четвертый трек Yearn более скоростной, в чем-то он даже вполне дарк металлический. Следующая композиция более тягучая с яркими гитарными мелодиями, и даже чередуется блэковыми бласт-битами со скримингом. Все это воспринимается с душой, так мягко и не напрягает. Предпоследний трек представляет собой такое себе грустное и очень тоскливое трио виолончели, скрипки и фортепиано. А затем эта музыка плавно перетекает в финальную 16-минутную композицию, заполненную то критически фьюнеральным темпом и тягучим гроулом, то резко взбитое карданным боем. К середине трека все стихает, лишь шепот и переборы по струнам. А потом все снова, по старой – зловеще и сурово.
Вцелом пластинка слушается ровно и на одном дыхании, оставляя желание послушать снова и снова. В «Absence» от Shattered Hope нет ничего лишнего, все так и должно быть, и это очень важно. Очень хочется верить, что очевидный успех полноформатника будет замечен в Европе и даст возможность в будущем выпускать им не менее клевые работы, да и выступать в различных уголках планеты, в том числе и в СНГ. Stay doomed!

Get ready for a healthy dose of depression. Greece’s Shattered Hope deliver the perfect slab of death doom metal with their debut album, ‘Absence.’ It’s a great mix of slow, churning metal, heart pumping aggression, and beautifully majestic passages. Everything anyone could want in doom metal is here… and it’s amazing that these guys did it all themselves (production and release included). Shattered Hope perform all different kinds of doom metal styles on this album… funeral doom, gothic doom, death doom, symphonic doom… you name it, it’s probably here.
The albums open with the epic “Admidst Nocturnal Silence.” There’s a few soft guitar notes and then the long, mournful chords along with deep, gutteral vocals over keyboards and funeral marching drums. It’s a crushing, overwhelming atmosphere that seems to go on forever until the interlude where the guitars get much more melodic and the drums foreboding and it just leaves listeners hanging until the whole thing starts crashing again. Depressingly beautiful! There is also the fast track “Yearn” that has a lot more pace and rhythm and sounds like energetic death metal. This is the sort of track get fans moving, and the keyboards keep it very atmospheric; it is certainly for fans of bands like My Dying Bride.
Then there’s a classically influenced “Lament in , F# Minor” which is an instrumental interlude that features only violin and keyboard. It probably would have suited better as the first track and a great introduction, but it is a fantastic nod towards greats like Virgin Black. Possibly one of the most beautiful tracks on the album before leading into the nineteen minute epic “The Utter Void.” This slow, crawling piece of death is some of the best funeral doom that anyone has come up with in a while since Esoteric. The sheer weight of this song is enough to make any heart heavy and not just because of the guitars and distortion. In fact, much of this track is melodically sound with piano, violins, and ominous picked strings that leave listeners hanging onto every note. It’s pure captivation, and Shattered Hope at their best.
It is very possible that this simple debut will skyrocket Shattered Hope to the ranks of greatness right alongside My Dying Bride, Draconian, and others like Revelations of Rain and Somnolent. The music is not only weighty, but also well melodically structured. The piano bits are fantastic and break up the monotony of the music while still keeping the atmosphere extremely somber. The production is also pretty clean too; a surprise for many doom death bands who believe that fuzzy productions helps obscure their work and create atmosphere that is dark and foreboding. Certainly a top album for 2010. Peaceville or Solitude Productions would be proud to have these guys,

Gran colpo della Solitude Productions quello di mettere sotto contratto i greci Shattered Hope. Il gruppo ripaga in pieno la fiducia dell’etichetta con un disco di notevoli proporzioni, un lavoro da mettere fra le cose migliori del 2010 alla voce gothic/death/doom.
Absence è un ascolto di certo non facile, ricorda certe produzioni “arcigne” di qualche tempo fa, quando non si pensava a riempire i dischi con zuccherosità o strizzatine alle cose più in voga del momento. Absence è sincero fino al midollo, sincero, lungo e romantico, un lavoro che fa passare il tempo lentamente ma senza annoiare. E’ completo ed elegante come pochi e ripaga tutto il tempo speso per il suo ascolto. Ed è proprio il particolare romanticismo di fondo la cosa che lo fa decollare nelle mie preferenze, le melodie hanno forse tardato un pelino per svelarsi ma una volta “scoperte” non ho potuto fare a meno di emozionarmi come un bimbo. Un grande merito se lo ritaglia senz’altro un growl accattivante, protagonista assoluto del tutto, sempre pronto ad incantare in versi sublimi, per la come la vedo io questo genere dovrebbe ricevere sempre questa dose di interpretatività per spiccare adeguatamente.
Tutte le doti confluiscono perfettamente nella opener Amidst Nocturnal Silence, dove le tastiere aggiungono la giusta dose emotiva e di pathos, applicando dove serve quella bellezza e particolarità che solo questo tipo di musica sa donare. I soliti My Dying Bride in cima alle influenze, seguiti a ruota da primi Novembers Doom e quei Necare che purtroppo molto poco hanno dato in termini di produttività, questi i nomi che mi sono rimbalzati continuamente in mente durante l’ascolto di Absence. Come si può poi non rimanere impigliati nella tela melodica di Vital Lie, altra canzone da novanta con strofe di pura emozione e un accelerazione perfettamente in sintonia con il tutto (e quel violino alla fine, mmmmm). Un vero trionfo di decandenza è Enlighten The Darkness, il vero gothic per come lo intendo io, sublime bellezza, perfetta armonia. La breve Yearn serve a movimentare un pò la situazione in tre minuti “sostenuti” piacevoli prima di tornare su tempi standard con una A Traitor’s Kiss (dove si percepiscono alcuni passaggi tipici della scena metal greca) dal ritornello quasi black metal (magistrale poi l’ultima strofa). La strumentale Lament, in F# Minor lancia la conclusiva The Utter Void (provate a resistere al giro di chitarra principale), l’ultima conferma di avere per le mani un prodotto superiore. L’ideale chiusura monolitica ed elegante di un disco fatto per essere ricordato.
Non distraetevi durante l’ascolto di questo album, prestate attenzione ad ogni singolo passaggio e assaporate tutta la classe espressa. Migliore uscita Solitude Productions anno 2010 assieme a Revelations of Rain e HellLight.

SHATTERED HOPE wurden 2002 gegründet und stammen aus Griechenland. Bei diesem Land denkt man sicherlich zuletzt an Doom Metal, doch ist es eben genau dieser Stil, welchem SHATTERED HOPE frönen, genauer gesagt dem epischen Death Doom Metal der Neunziger Jahre, wie er damals vor allem aus England kam, wobei teilweise auch die Grenzen zum Funeral Doom überschritten werden. Mit “Absence” liegt nun nach einem Demo und einer Promo das Debütalbum vor.
Gemächlich, mit ruhigen, dezenten Klängen beginnt das 13minütige “Amidst Nucturnal Silence”, ehe das Inferno losbricht: Getragener Keyboardteppich, langsame, zähflüssige Riffs, melodische Leads, wuchtig-getragenes Schlagzeugspiel und tiefe, langgezogen-grollende Growls, und alles sehr schwer und bittersüß in Moll mit tieftrauriger Stimmung. Ja, das ist die wahre Schule des langsamen Todes. Das abwechslungsreiche Stück trägt in sich viele Wechsel, so wird gerne auch einmal etwas flotter Fahrt aufgenommen und in Richtung Death Metal geschielt, wahre Rückkopplungsorgien, reichliche Dissonanzen finden sich genauso wie akustische Passagen. Das folgende “Vital Lie” ist mit knapp 9 Minuten ebenfalls nicht gerade kompakt gehalten, in der Basis ebenfalls ein langsamer Doomer mit bissigen Riffs, wenngleich hier auch mal schnellere Tempi eingesetzt werden. Sehr schön wurden in diesem Stück Violine und Cello eingeflochten, genauso wie leise halbakustische Passagen, und doch ist der Song recht eingängig und dabei leichter verdaulich als der teils etwas sperrige Opener. Veredelt wird das Ganze noch durch kranke Schreie von Jonathan Théry von ATARAXIE.
“Enlighten The Darkness” ist nicht nur ein schöner Titel, sondern auch ein Monster von einem schleppenden, episch-schweren Death-Doom-Song, mit trister Atmosphäre, verstärktem Keyboardeinsatz, PARADISE LOST-Leads, sakraler Stimmung und leider recht unspektakulärem Klargesang. Das folgende, erfrischende “Yearn” ist da gleich deutlich flotter und schwungvoller gehalten mit direktem Riffing, leichtem Groove, Gothic-Keyboards und einigen Doublebass-Wirbeln, mit 3,5 Minuten der kompakte Rocker des Albums. “A Traitor’s Kiss” ist da eine ganze Spur hoffnungsloser und auch wieder getragener, und siehe da, hier wird auch mal vehement der Black-Metal-Hammer geschwungen, sehr schöne Überraschung, diese kurzen Ausbrüche! Hier gibt es übrigens gesangliche Unterstützung von Thomas Jensen von SATURNUS. Wehklangende Violine, Cello und Piano tragen das wunderschöne und gleichzeitig melancholische Klassik-Instrumental “Lament, In F# Minor”, welches nahtlos in das Finale “The Utter Void” übergeht, einem schweren, komplexen Brocken von 18 Minuten, in welchem die Hellenen nochmals alle Elemente ihres Klangspektrums zum Tragen bringen.
Das musikalische Konzept dieser schleppenden Weltuntergangshymnen mit Schwerpunkt auf depressive Atmosphäre und Dramatik ist nicht neu, SHATTERED HOPE vereinen in sich die Einflüsse von MY DYING BRIDE, alten PARADISE LOST und alten ANATHEMA, als weitere Vergleiche müssen SATURNUS, NOVEMBER’S DOOM oder auch MOURNING BELOVETH herhalten. Indes zeigt sich die Umsetzung als ziemlich gelungen, lediglich beim Opener “Amidst Nucturnal Silence” haben sich einige Längen eingeschlichen, auf Dauer wirkt dieser zu eintönig, und auch der Klargesang müsste insgesamt noch verbessert werden.
“Absence” ist ein verdammt schweres, episches und abwechslungsreiches Album voller Hoffnungslosigkeit, mit tieftraurigen Melodien, prägnanten Riffs, nicht zu komplexen Arrangements und tiefen Growls direkt aus der Gruft. Und da herrscht kein Licht.

Nos encontramos ante el álbum debut de los griegos Shattered Hope quienes ya tenían una demo en el año ’05 y una promo de dos temas en el ’07. Ocho años tras su formación editan este “Absence”, un álbum de Funeral Doom con toques de Death Metal.
Estamos ante un disco que es para tomárselo con calma, para escuchar
sin prisas ya que contiene temas largos, sobre todo con el que terminan el disco
“The Utter Void” que se planta en dieciocho minutos de lentos pasajes,
riffs ultra pesados, melodías agónicas y que te sumergen en la oscuridad que
transmite el tema. Esto es algo que sucede en todo el disco, los temas son
cortados por el mismo patrón aunque quizás este al ser más extenso
encuentre algo más de variedad y sea menos agónico que el resto.
Destaca el tema “Vital Lie” donde cuenta con la colaboración del bajista y
vocalista Jonathan “Marquis” de los franceses Ataraxie, el cual cuenta con
algunos cambios de ritmo pasando de ritmos más death e incluso blackers a
lentos pasajes melancólicos. No es la única colaboración del disco, también
encontramos a Thomas Jensen, vocalista de Saturnus en el tema “A
Traitor’s Kiss”. El tema “Lament, in f#minor” es una
composición clásica escrita por Chris Gounaropoulos la cual se compone de
violines, contrabajo y cello además de acompañarse del piano de la teclista
del grupo Eygenia. Esta composición sirve para abrir el tema mencionado al
principio, enganchando una canción con la otra. Para el final he querido dejar el tema
“Yearn”, para un servidor el mejor del álbum, más directo y animado, con
cambios de ritmo y con mayorn protagonismo de guitarras, aunque no
sea el más indicado para dar a conocer el grupo ya que no mostraría el
desarrollo en los demás temas. En definitiva me ha parecido un trabajo
que para los que estén muy metidos en el mundo Doom será muy interesante
con una banda que ha comenzado a abrarse un buen camino, para los que
no estén tan familiarizados en el tema les costara empezar con este disco,
muy lento, muy pesado y muy lúgubre.

I know Shattered Hope from Greece since their 2005 demo, at that time they were playing a very atmospheric version of death/doom metal in the vein of My Dying Bride of mid-90′s.
Now after five years we have a mature band that wants to express the full potential available in their first full-lenght album, ‘Absence’ for russian label Solitude Prod.
And it’s soon clear that all the time passed has been very productive for the songwriting of the band, since now they have their own sound, that starting from classic death/doom it winkles sometimes to funeral doom, sometimes to death metal, into something more personal and detailed, without forgetting the influences of the past.
Melodies and atmospheres (“Vital Lie”), aggressive parts where we have up-paced tempo (“Yearn”) or the long and final “The Utter Void” that can easily sum up all these features of the greek band. If sound has been a little developped, the lyrical asset has remained the same, I’d say the typical impersonal and existential issues related lyrics, quite boring indeed, but music itself is more than enough to let us enjoy more than one hour of pounding doom metal!

Shattered Hope is a band formed in July 2002 in Athens, Greece. The band started their career by playing cover versions of My Dying Bride, Saturnus, Paradise Lost etc. all of their inspirations to this day.
They’ve released a demo in 2005 entitled A View of Grief and a two track Promo 2007. Finally this six-piece from Greece is ready with debut record Absence, which consists of seven mournful stories.
The musical style of Shattered Hope is epic, mournful and depressive with complex song structures. One, while listening to this new record, feels like being a part of a theatrical drama, best exemplified with the closing track “The Utter Voidâ€, where band is capable of building-up an atmosphere where you never know what comes next.
Most of the songs are obviously down-tempo and slow, but also with occasional screams, breaks and up-lifting moods. There’re numerous long passages around which the songs are built. The often used keyboard sound (played by a female named Eygenia) adds something special to this great piece of music.
Death Metal moments are rare as it is mostly a Funeral Doom sound that is a red-line through out this album. However, a song “A Traitor’s Kiss†is quite different as it is more groovy and death ‘metallish’ than the remaining six songs.
Another interesting feature about this particular song is the guest-appearance of our own Thomas Jensen (Saturnus) where he stands for some of the best vocals on the record.
Friends and lovers of Funeral Doom & Death Metal would love this release, but also fans of Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Anathema, Saturnus, Mar de Grises and Mourning Beloveth would appreciate it as well.

Shattered Hope is a Greek band that devoted readers of our webzine have already got familiar with. Absence is their latest offering, a seven-track long album released earlier this year. Absence is a solid and respectable melodic death & doom album. However, I don’t feel like they’ve managed to add this extra dimension to their well-known sound. It has many qualities, but they don’t offer anything new really. The only change now is the new artwork for the album, this time done by Geert van Mook.
In my opinion not much has changed, on the musical front, since the initial release of this album, so I would suggest you to read the ‘original’ review of Absence here. Still recommended for fans of Saturnus, Mar de Grises, Mourning Beloveth and My Dying Bride.

Quella che state per leggere è la recensione di un disco tutt’altro che facile.
Parliamo degli ellenici Shattered Hope, attivi dal 2003, con ben due demo al seguito e questo primo full lenght. Mi trovo di fronte a sette brani, tutti di durata non inferiore ai 10 minuti (fatta eccezione per la strumentale “Lament in F♯ Minor”) e capisco che non sarà un lavoro facile.
Qui non si vende tristezza a buon mercato, non troverete le solite frasi da copione, verrete bensì travolti in un vuoto desolante e disperato, cercherete di spegnere le casse ma i macabri accordi vi ipnotizzeranno finché l’ultima nota non metterà fine al nero incantesimo. Un senso di angoscia costante si fa strada ad ogni nota, ogni volta che Nick si avvicina al microfono caricando un grido soffocato, un growl da manuale.
Il suono è sempre grave , a tratti ripetitivo, ma quel che c’è di già sentito, scompare dietro il lento incedere della pesante batteria e dietro le abili dita di Eugenia alle tastiere, che incanta con le sue note meste ogni qualvolta viene (abilmente) lasciata l’unica protagonista della scena. Le inflenze che si scorgono fin dall’inizio sono molto chiare, specialmente per un orecchio allenato al genere, ma ben miscelate come in un calderone in cui si tenta di creare la pozione del perfetto Doom. La lenta cadenza del tempo è tipica di band come i vetrani My Dying Bride, passando per l’act alla Officium Triste e per le tendenze death degli irlandesi Mourning Beloveth.
L’opener “Amidst Nocturnal Silence” si fa strada sulle seducenti note di una chitarra acustica, che muta, dopo pochi secondi, in pesanti riff, sempre accompagnati, in un sottofondo che non passa inosservato, dagli accordi di un pianoforte.
La melodia dall’incedere strisciante, soffocante, di “Vital Lie” è impreziosita dal cameo di Jo “Marquis” alla voce (Ataraxie). Ma al pezzo sembra comunque mancare qualcosa.
Atmosfere dark ambient vengono evocate magistralmente in “Enlighten the Darkness”, probabilmente il pezzo migliore del disco.
“Yearn” è nata per scuotere. Il tempo prende carattere e il lato death del gruppo si fa notare nelle chitarre perfette e nella batteria di George, bravo e tecnico, in un pezzo che trascina e coinvolge (forse anche per la durata relativamente contenuta, almeno rispetto agli altri brani). Se vi risulta stonato nell’insieme dei pezzi di stampo funeral, ricredetevi. Anche “A Traitor’s Kiss” vanta un ospite d’eccezione al microfono, l’inconfondibile voce di Thomas A.G. dei Saturnus, che si cimenta in alcune parti quasi recitate.
Ma è il suono malinconico (a tratti quasi come una voce femminile) del violoncello di “Lament in F♯ Minor”, che smuove l’anima e dona tregua allo stomaco, costantemente squassato dal growl allungato di Nick. “The Utter Void” è quasi impossibile da distinguere, i suoi primi secondi sono dominati ancora dal piano e dal violoncello del pezzo precedente. La cadenza è sempre lenta al limite della sopportazione, eppure ipnotica nel suo incedere quasi epico, maestoso, soltanto a tratti animato da un’aggressiva doppia cassa.
Un disco pregnante, dal retrogusto acre. Se state attraversando un periodo felice, non avventuratevi nei suoi 63 minuti, e credetemi, non è una battuta. Vi travolgerà in un mondo di desolazione, di “assenza, come un faro abbandonato in mezzo ad un mare in tempesta, che non mostra più la sua luce a nessuna nave, perché non è rimasto nessuno da salvare. Wow!!! If I do not mistake now – during many years into Metal I NEVER heard Doom metal from Greece!!!!! So this is my first Greek doom metal (if my memory didn’t break, he-he) band ever, and this album is really brilliant as for the first full length. Seven tracks of doom metal, made in the way of ancient doo metal bands, and with huge funeral doom metal carcass. The music is slow, full of sorrow, and negtive emotions, with great keyboards and obscure vocals. Massive rhythm-section comes with same massive guitars, which are just like twisted wind came to your mind and spreading poison there… poison of dark feelings and like you not from this world at all. Also heavy death metal parts make their music yet more massive and devastating… here on the album were guests like vocalists from ATARAXIE and SATURNUS. All in all, “Absense” is one of those doom/death metal albums which you should have wihtout any doubts.

Schwere Nebelschwaden ziehen sich dicht und undurchsichtig über die raue See. Eisige Wellen branden tosend und schäumend gegen den, von der Zeit gezeichneten Stein. Doch das Mauerwerk des Turmes bleibt standhaft und trotz auch nach Jahren noch den wütenden Wassern um, wie seit jeher, seinen Dienst zu erfüllen. Mit einem schwachen aber beständigen Leuchten erhellt er auch die schwärzeste Nacht und weist den Weg durch den Sturm, vorbei an Klippen und Felsen, hinein in den sicheren Hafen. Ein Licht im Dunkeln, ein Hoffnungsschimmer für verirrte Seeleute…
beklemmenden Kompositionen
Bereits die schlichte Gestaltung des Artworks von “ABSCENCE” lässt eine Reihe düsterer Impressionen im Kopf des Betrachters entstehen. Aus musikalischer Sicht ist es der aus Griechenland stammenden Formation SHATTERED HOPE auch gelungen, exakt diese Eindrücke in beklemmenden Kompositionen auf ihrem Erstlingswerk zu vertonen.
Stilistisch gesehen ist das Schaffen des Sextettes durchaus dem Funeral Doom Metal zuzuordnen, wenngleich ein deutlicher Akzent todesmetallischer Anleihen nicht von der Hand gewiesen werden kann. Im Vergleich zu Genrekollegen zeigen sich SHATTERED HOPE sehr verspielt und präsentieren mit einer facettenreichen Saitenarbeit, sowie starken Keyboardeinflüssen alles andere als minimalistische oder gar monotone Songstrukturen. Insgesamt zeigen sich die 7 Stücke auf “ABSCENCE” sehr bemüht eine dichte Atmosphäre aufzubauen und diese über die gesamte Länge aufrecht zu erhalten oder mittels Spannungsbögen sogar zu steigern. Um dieses Ziel zu erreichen setzen die Griechen glücklicherweise nicht nur auf den Einsatz der Tasteninstrumentierung, sondern bedienen sich wohl dossiert veträumter Gitarrenmelodien und eines Streicherensembles, welchem gegen Ende der gut 60 minütigen Spielzeit zudem ein eigenes Stück zu Teil wird.
Mit “ABSCENCE” ist der Gruppierung ein durchaus gelungener Einstieg geglückt bei dem sowohl Qualität als auch Quantität stimmig sind. Puristen sollten vor einem Kauf jedoch zunächst antesten, ob ihnen die sehr atmosphärisch und melodische Spielweise von SHATTERED HOPE zusagt.

Motyw przewodni covera debiutanckiej płyty Greków jest bardzo mi bliski. Symbolika latarni morskiej jest tak wielce wyrazista i jednoznaczna, że z radością otwieram pudełko. Jest w tym albumie spora dawka nostalgii i swoistej mizantropii, która nadaje odpowiedniej tekstury brzmieniu. Siedem totalnie nastrojowo poukładanych utworów. Spójne zagranie tak melodyjnego funeral doom materiału zaczyna cieszyć już od otwierającego kawałka “Amidst Nocturnal Silence”. Absolutnie mnie rozbroił motyw klawiszy… kroplami delikatnych akordów spłynął po moich włosach i twarzy. Jak słona woda, która symbolizuje łzy i morska wilgoć. Nisko i gardłowo niesie mnie wokal Nicka. Ekstremalnie zwolnione i przygniecione tempo, przerysowane depresyjne brzmienie. Momentami na myśl przywodzi PANTHEIST i CATHEDRAL (“Forest of Equilibrium” z 1991 roku). “Vital Lie” trochę bardziej dynamiczny, z czarującą moje ucho zwolnioną partią gitary, w tle słychać kojący i tworzący niesamowity klimat, szum morskich fal… Niemalże czuję pod swoimi stopami zimną, kamienistą plażę, ostre klify, które rozrywają na strzępy życiowych rozbitków. Ostry, rozpaczliwy momentami vocal tnie osmaganą wiatrem skórę. Tak brzmi i pachnie kłamstwo, iluzoryczny obraz ideału w konfrontacji z realnym światem. No i zakochałam się w końcowej partii skrzypiec, które brzmią jak żaden inny instrument na świecie – czysta tęsknota… Jo “Marquis” Thery (ATARAXIE), gościnnie w tym utworze
. Krótkie eksplozje, niczym pocałunek Śmierci, to obraz vocalu. Ostry, bardzo dramatyczny i nieomal schizofreniczny krzyk – “Vital Lie” to także moja wizualizacja kłamstwa. “Enlighten the Darkness” jako bardziej epicka impresja na zatracenie i bezustanne poszukiwanie. “Yearn” – fajne, dynamiczne wejście, szybsza praca perkusji. Więcej klawiszy, jednak w rozsądnej proporcji, która równoważy vocal. W kolejnym kawałku – “Traitor’s Kiss”, gościnnie na vocalu Thomas AG (SATURNUS), który podniósł automatycznie temperaturę utworu, podkręcił nieco dramaturgię… Świetne. Doskonały “Lament,in F # Minor” – prawie trzy minuty czystego, ponurego piękna wykreowanego przez czarowną moc skrzypiec, wiolonczeli i basu. A to wszystko spowite zamszowo brzmiącym fortepianem, pomrukującym ciężko vocalem, walcującą perkusją… jak ja to kocham. Zamykający “Utter Void” z nastrojowym fortepianem, maksymalnie ciężkimi riffami, epickimi solówkami, spiął cały album w jedną, spójną historię, która pozwala doświadczyć wzlotu i upadku. Doom epopeję, której bohaterem codziennie jest każdy z nas. Odgłos kroków w epilogu… Ten utwór skradł moje lodowate serce. “ABSENCE” – warto mieć na swojej półce.

Tjonge jonge, wat een lange nummers. Het eerst nummer, Amidst Nocturnal Silence, is 13 minuten lang. Het is een goed in elkaar gezet nummer met zeker goede muziek. De zang is erg eentonig, maar wat hij doet, doet hij goed. Het 2e nummer, Vital Lie, is net zo doom als de eerste. Het is niet goed te onderscheiden van het eerste nummer totdat een rustig keyboard stuk melodie geeft in deze donkere doom. Zowaar lijkt het even alsof de zanger gaat zingen. Maar de rust word bruut gestoord door weer de zware grunts en het langzame gitaarwerk. Ik moet toegeven, de solo’s zijn erg mooi en melodieus, maar veel hetzelfde.
‘Yearn’ begint snel! Dit heb ik nog niet eerder gehoord. Dit is het eerste nummer dat mijn hoofd mee begint te bewegen. Hier zingt hij al iets meer, wat het meteen een andere sfeer geeft. ‘A Traitors Kiss’ is de volgende. In dit nummer zit iets meer variatie, want dit is langzaam en ook een beetje sneller met gevarieerde zang, van zingen en schreeuwen tot hoog en laag grunten. Tot nu toe vind ik dit het beste nummer. Tijd voor Laments, in F# Minor. Dit is een mooi instrumentaal nummer met violen en keyboard. Dit gaat mooi over in de laatste, ‘The Utter Void’. Dit nummer duurt 18 minuten. Toen ik dat zag was ik erg benieuwd, want een nummer van 18 minuten moet wel erg goed zijn wil je 18 minuten hetzelfde nummer luisteren. Ik moet zeggen, dit hebben ze netjes gedaan. Ze hebben een soort samenvatting gemaakt van het hele album. Alles van het eerdere zit er in. Een goed nummer.
Conclusie:
Alle nummer afzonderlijk zijn best aardig. Als album word het toch vermoeiend om naar te luisteren, vooral omdat de nummers zo lang zijn. het laatste nummer, ‘The Utter Void’, is ongeveer een samenvatting van 18 minuten die tot mijn verbazing niet verveeld door de variatie. Al met al, goede nummers en een goed album.

Immessi sul mercato come funeral doom act, i greci Shattered Hope a dire il vero paiono maggiormente interessati a voler seguire le orme dei maestri novantiani del doom death albionico, quindi My Dying Bride e primissimi Anathema su tutti. Patrocinati dalla Solitude Productions, “Absence” rappresenta l’esordio sulla lunga distanza per il sestetto ateniese; i sette brani qui contenuti, ad eccezione della strumentale “Lament, in F# Minor”, sono decisamente lunghi e strutturati, sebbene non brillino di luce propria. Oltre ad una certa, accettabile carenza di originalità, la musica dei nostri a tratti sfocia nella ripetitività e va incontro a momenti di stasi, probabilmente dovuti alla scarsa esperienza nel maneggiare una materia tanto delicata. Peccato, in quanto l’iniziale “Amidst Nocturnal Silence” pareva promettere grandi cose e riusciva a coniugare gli strazianti passaggi gothic doom a divagazioni romantiche e ad accelerazioni death-oriented interessanti ma non particolarmente ben riuscite. Già dalla successiva “Vital Lie” gli Shattered Hope paiono perdere quel tocco di grazia crepuscolare che rendeva gradevole l’opera e ci propinano un brano che, pur basandosi sulla stessa struttura del precedente, sembra esserne la copia sbiadita. “Enlighten The Darkness” è l’episodio maggiormente affine al doom più funereo, sebbene “illuminato” da melodie darkeggianti e da aperture mutuate dai My Dying Bride. “Yearn” è una sorta di heavy death scolastico e completamente fuori contesto, mentre con “A Traitor’s Kiss” si torna a battere il sentiero del death doom, ma anche in questo caso il songwriting è piuttosto debole e fallace ed il brano non riesce ad emergere, nonostante l’inserimento di mid tempo death nei quali viene esaltato il growl catarroso di Nick. In conclusione troviamo la lunga “The Utter Void”, che tenta di riunire in un unico calderone piuttosto slegato tutto quanto fatto vedere in precedenza. Gli Shattered Hope dimostrano di avere classe e buon gusto e di essere capaci di generare nell’ascoltatore sensazioni di tristezza e smarrimento, peccato che questa loro capacità venga a galla solamente a tratti, mentre la maggior parte del lavoro vivacchia su partiture mal congegnate, sebbene ottimamente eseguite. Sicuramente vanno tenuti d’occhio, ma al momento attuale paiono ancora troppo acerbi per poter lasciare un segno significativo sulla scena.

La Solitude Productions continua imperterrita nella sua ricerca di talenti in giro per il mondo, dediti al death funeral doom ed ecco questa volta saltar fuori dalla Grecia questi Shattered Hope (da non confondere con gli omonimi metallers olandesi). La band di Atene, in giro ormai da quasi dieci anni, giunge finalmente al debutto dopo un paio di demo datati 2005 e 2007. La proposta del combo dell’Attica, come avrete capito, è un death doom che si rifà ai primissimi Anathema (quelli di “Serenades” tanto per capirci), sia per la considerevole lunghezza dei pezzi, sia per la plumbea atmosfera che ivi si respira, capace di farci sprofondare nella malinconia più totale, fin dall’iniziale “Amidst Nocturnal Silence”, song dotata di un forte flavour gotico. I primi tre pezzi (per la cronaca in “Vital Lie” compare come guest vocals anche Jo Marquis degli Ataraxie) sono la rappresentazione in musica di uggiosi paesaggi autunnali, caratterizzati da ritmi lenti, ossessivi per la loro ripetitività di fondo, dato da un riffing granitico e dalla presenza di un meraviglioso violino, in grado di regalare quell’aura nostalgica tipica dei My Dying Bride, che emerge ben presto e mi fa apprezzare non poco la proposta del sestetto greco. Arriva il momento di “Yearn” e anche delle mie prime perplessità: si tratta infatti di una song a sé stante, della sola durata di 3 minuti e mezzo, che spinge parecchio l’acceleratore grazie ad un death anonimo, che viaggia su ritmiche abbastanza tirate e con il vocione profondo di Nick a fare il verso a Darren White. Con “A Traitor’s Kiss” ricompaiono fortunatamente le melodie crepuscolari e l’influenza delle band della terra d’Albione si fa ancora più forte, a scapito ahimè dell’originalità, anche se a metà pezzo uno screaming mutuato quasi dal black, prende il sopravvento, con le ritmiche che accelerano paurosamente, ma è solo un attimo perché si ritorna ben presto alle decadenti atmosfere iniziali; qui le vocals riescono addirittura a trovare lo spazio in versione pulita e il sound pesca a piene mani anche dal repertorio dei Saturnus (complice la presenza alla voce di Thomas A.G.) e agli irlandesi Mourning Beloveth. È poi il momento di un intermezzo strumentale, prima dei monolitici 19 minuti finali della conclusiva “The Utter Void”, dove l’aria si fa ancora più rarefatta e stancamente si arriva alla fine di questo “Absence” che ci rivela che una interessante, ma ancora un po’ acerba realtà, si è affacciata nel panorama death doom mondiale. Nostalgici!

An absolute tiring album, so much it’ll make you yawn, for being a band who straddles in the Atmospheric Doom / Death Metal and Funeral Doom Metal vein (simply Dark Metal) without making a solid attempt at captivating it’s listeners is diabolical, for Greece’s Shattered Hopes the band name is self-explanatory, for this release ‘Absence’ lacks quality, it is a real depressive release.

Симфоничный такой, мелодичный, суровый по форме, где надо, а где надо даже грустный и меланхоличный, слаженный такой, ровный альбом – это, конечно, плюсы вроде, но, как пела наша поп-певица из Молдовы: «Только-только-только этого мало!».
Всё технически и стилистически сделано безукоризненно, как мне показалось. Хорошее владение инструментами, хорошее наполнение жанровыми элементами, «фишками». Просто «легион» приглашённых именитых музыкантов, исполнивших вокальные и др. партии на некоторых композициях.
А что тут слышно? Doom-death с неуёмным использованием клавиш. Второе – первый весомый («килограмм на сто») субъективный минус альбома. Да и, в общем-то, термин «металл» тут не особо применим.
Да простят меня некоторые, но это металлическая попса! Самый мэйнстримовый мэйнстрим из doom-death сцены. Причём, есть примеры попсоватых doom-банд, но у них и музыка легче, там и напрягаться не нужно. Тут же – прямо скорбь сошла на землю и всем «крышка»… Всё бы ничего, это нормально для такого жанра, НО! Под такие слащавые, прямолинейные, предугадываемые и заезженные зарисовки не то, что сопереживать, а дослушать диск проблематично! Дорогая жвачка для «doom-ушей», не более того.

Těsně před vánočními svátky přišli Mortemem už několikrát prohnaní Solitude productions s dalším intenzivně umírajícím balíčkem hudebních žalmů. Vedle brazilských HellLight se do něj vešli také SHATTERED HOPE, řecká odpověď na klasické doom/deathové protagonisty. Ještě než jsem přistoupil k samotnému poslechu a studiu této jižanské šestice, byl jsem informován, že jejich způsob smutnění má být na stejné vlně, jakou plují My Dying Bride, či ve svém doomovém období také Anathema. Takové přirovnání ve mně však může vyvolat tak maximálně hraný úsměv, protože vlastně neznamená vůbec nic a zároveň ukazuje na to, že kapela pluje stejným korýtkem jako naprostá většina všech ostatních, co se teprve učí hudebně plakat za pečlivého sledování těch, kdo to umí nejlépe.
Realita je taková, že SHATTERED HOPE vsadili na osvědčenou kartu klasického doom/deathu, přidali na bombastických atmosférách, jemně přisladili, což ve výsledku budí dojem, že se dotýkají také starého ošlehaného gothic metalu. Celou dobu v jejich přítomnosti se člověk cítí tak trochu na hraně, mnohdy i za ní, neboť jsou zde momenty, které si zasluhují nejpřísnější měřítka (pravda, není jich mnoho) a pak jsou k dispozici i ty, bez kterých bych se osobně už obešel, jak kýčovitě a levně zní. Teď jde hlavně o to, jak se podaří mladé začínající kapele z této šlamastiky vybruslit a zachovat si přitom důstojnost. ”Absence” je první velkou deskou pod zahraniční firmou, první zkušeností, a z jejich nevyspělosti je to také cítit. Na druhou stranu nejde o vyloženou partu nazdárků, takže se s tím perou docela statečně a musím uznat, že s následujícími poslechy rostou a dokazují, že ještě bude třeba jim nějakou tu pozornost věnovat.
Pozornost, tu si určitě tahle řecká umírající výprava zaslouží. Naštěstí si ji dokážou získat způsobem, kterak jsou schopní své již mnohokrát obnošené motivy vhodně naskládat, rozvíjet je, neubíjet a celkově s nimi umět pracovat. Cením si toho, jak se kapele daří tak nějak svobodně plout v zajetí absolutně nesvobodných nápadů. Nebýt této šikovnosti, ani bych se nesnažil je nějak bránit a rovnou bych si je hodil do kolonky ‘nezpůsobilí’ a čekal, s čím se uráčí přijít příště. Nebo spíš nečekal… Faktem zůstává, že SHATTERED HOPE mě svým způsobem přesvědčili o svém talentu, o tom, že jejich skladby mají hlavu a patu a o tom, že odsuzovat je by bylo opravdu předčasné.
Debut ”Absence” na své hodinové ploše dokáže přece jen vyvolat jisté prožitky a chvílemi se člověk umí do alba naplno vžít. Spolu s prožitky tu ale navždy zůstane ona pachuť nevyzrálosti a skromnost ve smyslu vlastního ksichtu. Definovat SHATTERED HOPE jako naději, které bude nutno dopřát ještě cosi času, je příliš snadné, ale prozatím se s touto definicí budu muset smířit. Osobně od doom/deathové kapely čekám mnohem více, než jen sladkobolné trucování a plakání na cizích hrobech. To musí kopat, přesně tak jako kopou například kolegové ve stáji, němečtí Ophis. Vůbec mi nevadí, když je doom metal atmosférický, ale vadí mi, když je tahle atmosféra až po okraj jak cukrová vata na jen další zastávce průměrných kočujících cirkusáků. Právě tohle podle mě album sráží a větší mystičnost či opravdová (a ne jen strojená temnota) by albu slušela mnohem více. Taková je ovšem cesta SHATTERED HOPE. Věřím, že i tak si najde dostatek stejnosměrně kráčejících fans, ale já sám už se s nimi do moc častého kontaktu dostat nehodlám. Zůstávám stát opodál a čekám.
”Absence” je album s potenciálem ve smyslu talentu protagonistů, ne však ve smyslu přesvědčivosti a zasloužené pozornosti. Hrají dobře, řečeno fotbalovou terminologií formou rozhovorů s bystrými hráči o přestávce mezi poločasy. To je ale zatím málo.

Lighthouse ahead! The captain of the wretched ship wailed in awe happy to have found shelter for him and the crew; or so it seemed. A lighthouse in the middle of nowhere, no matter how bright it may shine, it shatters your hope. Soon the tormented ship would find its place among others at the bottom of the ocean, in Absence.
Shattered Hope, my co-countrymen, not only managed to release an album worth its burden in welcome amounts of crushing waves of the sea, they had the chance to depict everything their music has to present in an envelope which transformed their compositions into a highly expressive title/artwork and vice versa. Doom/Death with funeral Doom references is everything you have to expect and it’s enough to please your weary senses so as to keep on listening. As a matter of fact, Shattered Hope never let me down and it was during a Saturnus show in Greece I managed to get a hold of their first demo. Ever since they worked hard and achieved to play alongside renowned acts of the scene both indoors and outdoors and the progress of ’Absence’ is their reward, everything they tried to achieve throughout the years, everything they are at the present; the future still lies ahead, no matter how “un-Doom” this may sound.
Down–paced heavily distorted guitars and weeping melodies pave the way with their overburdened vibe, yet the band shows they aren’t afraid to fasten the march and burst into soaring fierce moments, until darkness falls again. Beauteous keyboard/piano melodies surround you as they enrich the overall ambiance and you can’t act otherwise but follow their lament. The rhythm section is imposing enough and compliments the compositions, lending depth, groove (no matter how slow it may be) and holding together the structure of the compositions. Nick’s gifted throat grunts from the core of the earth escalating the atmosphere with every single word he utters in his very own devastating manner. Needless to say some cleaner vocals and recites make the sound of Shattered Hope more affected and fragile, whereas some tormented screams deepen the band’s personal martyrdom. Lest not forget the harassing violin melodies that tempt your senses.
Of course the band’s not alone in their virgin ride (in terms of full-length releases) in the world of Doom metal. Having Marquis (on ‘Vital Lie’) of Funeralium/Ataraxie fame and Thomas (on ‘A Traitor’s Kiss’), his majesty from Saturnus, partaking in your work, then it must mean something and having said this, by no means I’m lowering the beauty of the album itself, it’s through a highly positive spectrum. As a matter of fact, to say things with their name, those two accomplished artists in the world of Doom metal wouldn’t lend their voices in an album not worth their/your attention.
Before leading my point of view to a natural end, I have to make a special reference to Vital Lie. I first listened to this song when their first demo came out and I stood in awe finding out how much it changed throughout the years and became the colossal tombstone it is nowadays. With respect to its sound roots, the band progressed its arch melancholy both in terms of length and emotion and with Marquis’ offering it reached completion.
Of course they have their references, varying from Saturnus to My Dying Bride and from Mourning Beloveth and Anathema to funeral Doom whispers. Originality is a difficult thing to find in Doom metal in general: after all, almost everything has been said and done. The key to enjoy (yes, Doomsters can actually enjoy their music) this kind of expression is beyond such small matters when aspects like personal experience, heart and soul come to the surface. Feel it or leave it.
If by any chance you haven’t come across Shattered Hope’s Absence yet, you could proceed without fear, but with passion. The band intends to reward you and make you wish for more in the near future. The best is yet to come, as for now, The Utter Void extends its hands just a breath away from you… would you dare to reach it?

Vibrayions of Doom

This time around, as Solitude Productions (based out of Russia, mind you) dips it’s toe into internation waters, it just so happens to make a pit stop in Greece, home to Shattered Hope. Now, I don’t know of many doom bands that hail from Greece, with the exception of Nightfall who have been around like FOREVER, but I had no idea such passionate and emotional doom/death bands were evolving in the land where some of the most passionate and dedicated heavy metal fans on this planet can be found. Utilizing landscapes and textures found most commonly within bands like Mourning Beloveth, My Dying Bride and even Ahab, I must say that every song on this disc is an emotional roller coaster ride filled with soaring synthesizers, well crafted high ended guitar notes, and deep vicious death metal roars. Solitary acoustic guitar work starts off the disc (the track ‘Amidst Nocturnal Silence’) before launching into amazing atmosphere. It reminds me of some of the most emotional parts of early Draconian alongside the epic instrumentation of a band like Ea! For a 13 minute piece, there’s lots of diversity, though I thought maybe a bit too much time was spent on sicker and heavier material. ‘Vital Lie’ follows up, and I gotta say that there’s one part of this song where you hear some of the sickest and heaviest vocal work you’ll ever hear, it’s almost like a shouted hardcore style mixed with vampyric black metal, and you’ll have to hear it to believe it! For all the dark and sinister vibes going on, though, there’s still many moments of melody, including some nice violin and piano notations. There are a few short pieces, though, and the track ‘Yearn’ throws you off a bit (at it’s 3:32 length) with the faster paced instrumentation; it’s kinda doomy but DAMN heavy. Though almost blackened vocals can be heard on ‘Enlighten The Darkness,’ the track stays predominantly in a more melodic and etherial mood, adding piano notations and landscape synths in all the right places. This CD features one instrumental track ‘Lament In F# Major,’ which mainly uses violins, pianos, and stringed instruments to lead you through the 18 minute album closer ‘The Utter Void.’ The track at times conveys the idea that this could actually be two or three separate songs, most noted by how some solitary instrumentation breaks the track and right before a variation in tempo or style and sound. The last 5 minutes of this song feature some great epic doomy instrumentation, which are extremely ear pleasing and catchy, and will leave you with a lasting impression long after the last notes have faded from this CD (And yes, I digitized the last 5 minutes of this track for you so you could hear what I was talking about!) I really enjoyed this disc, and can’t wait for the next release from this Greek band.
