You Are Loved by The Death Of Her Money is a bit of a frustrating listen. From a review standpoint, it reminded me a lot of one I did two years ago for Buried Inside’s Spoils Of Failure. Both were post-metal. Both have some good music going on. And both have vocals that annoy me to seemingly no end.

So, yeah, as mentioned above, The Death Of Her Money are post-metal in the Cult of Isis vein. Musically the band shows some promise, despite some inconsistencies. They have a decent vibe. In tracks like the opening to “Enguelades” the guitar goes up the neck a bit and adds in a little wah while the bassist and drummer hold the groove. Later in the track, more of the same… the backbone of the band hold Fort Groove while the guitarist hops around on some effects pedals to a cool segue.

In “Truth” they manage to create a somewhat disconcerting edge, in which the vocal shouts don’t do the song any damage, while the opening to “Maya Deren” almost feels a bit like 5ive… well, before the vocals.

The clean (and mercifully instrumental) “New Bodily Functions” is three minutes of really low key mellow, fairly stark music, a nice lead in to the slow, building riffing of album closer, “The Tonality Of Despair”.

So while perhaps the music isn’t original, and not everything is compelling, I’ve just listed off five tracks that all manage to intrigue this listener through slightly different approaches. To me, it shows some promise.

As for the vocals, I could pretty much end this review plagiarizing the last two paragraphs of my aforementioned Buried Inside. Blah blah harsh shouted/throated vocals that are perhaps a bit loud in the mix, thus burying cool stuff going in the background with something that chaps my ears like leather chaps chap my hide. Fortunately they are absent for huge stretches at a time in this album.

You Are Loved, you are liked. At least musically.

Post-metal oli vuosituhannen vaihteen aikoihin ehkä huolimattomimmin bändeille lätkitty nimike. Moderniin tyyliin kohtuullisen järjettömästi nimetty The Death of Her Money kuitenkin tarjoaa toisella kokopitkällään suurin piirtein mitä ”metallin ohittaneelta” musiikilta voi kuvitella: junnaavia rytmejä, hallittua kakofoniaa ja painavia huutolauluja.

Vaikka You Are Loved alkaa mukavasti Held Handsin leppoisan raskaasti soljuvan pääriffin ja värikkäiden taustamelodioiden johdolla, ei biisi juuri kulje mihinkään, ja tämä on kokonaisuutena albumin ongelma. Onneksi arvostelukappale tuli sentään cd:nä, koska vinyylistä olisi joutunut tusinan kertaa tarkistamaan ettei vanha neulaparka ole jäänyt jumiin. Sludge ja post-metal toki ratsastavat hyvin paljon loputtomilta vaikuttavilla riffeillä ja toiston aiheuttamalla raskauden tunteella, mutta silloinkin tarkoituksena on parhaimmillaan tietynlaisen tunnelman toteuttaminen. The Death of Her Money näyttää pitävän sitä itseisarvona.

Esimerkiksi jenkkibändi Deadbird hallitsee monimuotoisen junnauksen, päähän jäävät riffit ja kuin veden alla soivat raskaat soundit. Vaikka The Death of Her Money on yrittänyt luoda näitä samoja tunnelmia, ei se onnistu juuri missään. Laulaja Darren Kaskien laulut eivät kanna juuri tusinahardcorehuutajaa paremmin, joten laulujen miksaus matalalle onkin ollut ehkä hyvä idea. Muiden instrumenttien osalta vahvaa hällä väliä -fiilistä on vaikea välttää. Maya Deren muodostuu käytännössä yhdestä rumpukompista, jonka tahdissa kitarat hieman varioivat samaa riffiä. Näillä rakennuspalikoilla on vaikea odottaa kovin tajuntaa räjäyttäviä biisejä.

Notevole mix di Cult Of Luna, Godflesh e Neurosis.

Slow Burn Records, rosyjski konkurent amerykańskiego Hydrahead zaproponował tym razem płytę walijskiego The Death Of Her Money.

Neurosis, Cult of Luna, Isis czy nawet Callisto.

Ciężkie gitary, brudne brzmienie, surowy sound perkusji i rozwrzeszczany wokal w stylu Aarona Turnera czy duetu z Cult of Luna. “You Are Loved” zawiera stosunkowo mało spokojnych momentów. A szkoda, bo akurat w tych wyciszonych partiach zespół wypada najciekawiej.

Ci, którzy dopiero wchodzą w temat, na pewno mają do poznania wiele ciekawszych płyt aniżeli “You Are Loved”. Poczekamy, zobaczymy.

Hm, we all know there in United Kingdom are pretty talented bands, and in such style like sludge metal too… But, as for me, this release is for modern scene lovers mainly, as for those who like obscure music there is no place. Seven songs of vortex and measured played sludge made in modern way, with some good tempo-changes and cosmic atmosphere with hysterical vocals. This is their second album so far, I didn’t heard about them earlier, and to be honest this is not my cup of tea… So if you like moderd sludge metal – check this out.

I am only a medium-sized fan of Neurosis and Cult of Luna so why would I like a second-rate version of those kind of bands? That is the case here with The Death of Her Money from South Wales. They play in the same post-rock meets sludge and doom vein as those bands and this album starts off with 2 pretty good tracks, after that however it all gets very mediocre and tedious, very quickly. This album’s opening track ‘Held Hands’ has huge distorted guitar passages and decent melodies. There is some fine riffing but it gets kind of buried under the distortion along with the drums and thus weakens its effectiveness. There is some angry vocals which are also kind of buried under the distortion but ‘Held Hands’ is a good apocalyptic, sludgy tune. The problem is the second track follows the same formula as does the third and so on and it all gets tedious about 20 minutes into the album.

The band is minimal and repetitive in musical style and in sound but it also has its moments. The album’s epic track, ‘Truth’ has more melody and less distortion and also some quieter passages. This makes for a break from the harsh and punishing rhythms that the band need repeats over and over again. The last track on the album called ‘Tonality Of Despair’ edges closer to traditional doom-metal and has a mesmerizing, depressing atmosphere and is full of emotion and I hate to say it but that is about it for highlights. Too much of this seems to be missing something – the second track for example titled ‘Enguelades’ would sound great if it had a big clear pounding drum-sound and precise, crunchy guitars but it doesn’t. Another track, ‘New Bodily Functions’ is an almost relaxing tune in comparison to the rest of the album and would have benefited greatly if it had some dramatic twists and turns, again it doesn’t happen.

‘You are Loved’ is very atmospheric, I will say that about it but it also lacks soul or something. It is hard pin-point where it goes wrong exactly but I am guessing it sounds too much like ‘Cult Of Luna’s second or third cousin. This is one of those albums you have to let soak in to get anything out of it and with thousands of CD’s to choose from, I just don’t have the time or the stamina. I am also guessing it is just too generic of a style that reached its use-by date for me many years ago. To be fair, a lot of post-rock enthusiasts will like this especially if you are just now exploring the genre. For more experienced listeners, it might just be too little, too late…

THE DEATH OF HER MONEY bestehen den Genretest auf Atmosphäre ziemlich gut.
