It is easy to single out Raventale from the already high and still rising number of various Ukrainian Black Metal projects. This quite popular band is a peculiar mix of Doom Metal and Atmospheric Black Metal. The melancholic, slow sound never reaches the aggression and power which is characteristic to the true BM. Therefore the author himself describes his music as “Atmospheric Blackened Metal”. The one-man project Raventale was established in 2005 when Astaroth, a member of Den of Winter (now known as Virvel av Morkerhatet), decided to create his own band. Raventale have surpassed its mediocre former band and present high quality performance and originality. Astaroth has released six albums in total which is quite a solid number for a project that has been active since 2005.
The fourth Raventale album “After” doesn’t distinguish itself from previous releases. The reason is that when you discover a specific, interesting and successful formula you don’t go searching anymore. This is usual to other similar type of Ukrainian bands, e.g. Drudkh, Khors, Astrofaes. “After” follows the pattern of previous album “Mortal Aspirations” where music tended to poetry rather than to the spread of hate and slow guitar parts created by a massive and dismal atmosphere. Therefore there are no changes in “After”, only that the features of previous works are improved and the whole content is performed even more professionally. Usually this repetitiveness would be a disadvantage for some other bands, but Raventale manage to retain the interest in music, hide flaws under high quality performance and play everything with typical Ukrainian sincerity.
“After” probably is the best work of Raventale although on this album (and the following ones) nothing new is presented. So why “After” is so good? Well, when so many bands cannot retain the attention of listeners and begin to bore them, Astaroth continues to improve his music. Yes, the content of albums remains the same, but each time better and better results are presented because of progressive and motivated advancement. So for those who haven’t heard Raventale yet I advise to begin with this “After” album. And if you like it, you can continue to other releases of similar content

More melodic doomdeath, but with an army of lush synths. Moves at many paces, but the atmospheric dropouts are the best parts.

Ukrainalainen yhden miehen black/doom metal –projekti Raventale tarjoilee tällä neljännellä täyspitkällään reilun puolen tunnin verran mustutettua hidastelutunnelmointimetallia, joka onnistuu kuulostamaan, allekirjoittaneen musiikkimaun huomioon ottaen, jopa yllättävän hyvältä. Viidestä kappaleesta koostuva After on varsin tasaista laatua ja tällaiseksi yhden miehen tunnelmointiprojektiksi jopa huomattavankin korkealaatuinen.

Raventale todellakin onnistuu luomaan musiikillaan melkoisen vahvoja mielikuvia syksyisistä öisistä metsistä ja karun kauniista luonnosta yleensä. Musiikki on sopivalla tavalla dramaattista ja viitegenreistään huolimatta vieläpä varsin melodista tavaraa, joten toteutuksenkaan puolesta levy on enemmän kuin vain lievästi onnistunut. Emperormaiset laulut tuovat mieleen black metalin eeppisemmän puolen, vaikka Raventale keskittyykin teknisen suorittamisen sijasta nimenomaan tunnelmointiin.

Raventale is yet another Ukrainian (Kiev) metal band which I had no knowledge of, nor could I find any information on the internet about this band. What I figured out while listening to this new opus After is that we’re dealing here with one-man project very much doom & death metal oriented. In addition to this his music also contains some minor black and gothic metal elements, which makes it quite diverse to begin with.

Being a lonely rider in a band has both its pros and cons. On the positive side I would say it gives you a unique opportunity to leave your own personal touch on the music, without compromise. On the other side; if you’re in doubt or just unable to come up with new angels and inspirations; it can be a very varied result. This is exactly the feeling I’m coping with now. This guy has maybe the biggest possible artistic freedom, but he’s not doing anything to break the monotony of this lengthy release. It only contains five tracks, but I must say it was becoming more and more boring towards the end.

Meanwhile, cover artwork and production are top-notch and it definitely shows another and more creative side of this individual. If you add some modern passages, down-tuned guitars, symphonic synths and nice arrangements, alternative sound effects and heavy riffing – then I can still suggest you listening to After. Especially for those into melodic & melancholic doom/death in the vein of Katatonia, Opeth, Monokromia and similar acts.
