9.5/10

Prawie dokładnie w dwa lata po “Horror Vacui” rosyjski ABSTRACT SPIRIT atakuje kolejnym funeral doom metalowym dziełem zatytułowanym “Theomorphic Defectiveness”. Jeszcze bardziej złożonym i pokręconym muzycznie, miażdżącym ciężkimi riffami, ekstremalnym growlem i starannie dobranymi dodatkami.

Theomorphic Defectiveness is the fourth full-length release by the muscovite band Abstract Spirit. The band’s musical style is pretty slowish funeral doom and the six songs on the album clocks for a bit over an hour. The first impression I got of the album seems to be misled, after giving it more time to wallow in it’s dark ambience and depressing soundscapes.

The oppressing and crushing feeling is achieved by the use of a very crisp guitar distortion and good coordination amongst the rhythm instruments. The drums and the bass does not participate in any kind of useless gimmickry either, but settles down to their own droning, which works perfectly well. The music is given more nuances by the use of a piano or electronic effects that are used from time to time. The band does not shun away from melodies either, but instead guitars go on to play some very atmospheric riffs. I think that this solution is the correct one, because an album full of only oppressing droning would tend to get boring in the long run. The vocals are your typical aggressive, deep growling, which does not really make you hate or love them either way.

As I said before, this album requires a bit of time and attention, but I think that the end result really is worth getting to know. Theomorphic Defectiveness is surprisingly atmospheric release, and it contains a lot of little nuances, that you really find only after listening to the album for a few times.

Forgotten Path
7/10

In recent years “Solitude Productions” has released a lot of Russian Doom Metal albums. “Theomorphic Defectiveness” by a quite well-known Funeral Doom Metal band Abstract Spirit is one of them. The album was produced by four people, although the regular line-up is made of three members who also contribute to other projects. As is customary for this genre, the album features six slow tracks and lasts for about an hour.
I am sure I’ve heard of Abstract Spirit, but I can’t recall their music. After listening to “Theomorphic Defectiveness” I realised why. Although the album is of high quality and engages the listener, it’s quite abstract. Well, that was probably intentional as the influence of Xasthur is evident. The peculiar dissonances create a feeling of “drowning in dark water with increasing despair”, but leaves the listener without vibrant imprints of separate tracks. Abstract Spirit’s main focus is on Funeral Doom Metal as it continues the traditions of Evoken rather than DSBM. But the members didn’t avoid some experimentation with guitars and compositions. “Theomorphic Defectiveness” has dominating male vocals, which are occasionally backed with a chorus of two other members. Moreover, the guitars are quite melodic, but not as repetitive as in some melodic Metal genres. Another important part of the compositions is the use of keyboards, which slightly bring out Gothic sounds. However, the atmosphere of a funeral chapel is retained. The instrument that follows all canons of Funeral Doom is the drums, which are dull and repetitive as hell. But they perfectly embody a feeling of grief when walking to a loved one’s grave or a gruelling, purposeless journey of life.
“Theomorphic Defectiveness” is an album worth listening to as it accurately continues the tradition of Funeral Doom Metal. However, eventually you might get fed up with it due to increasing monotony, especially in the Scepticism cover.

Evelized

Abstract Spirit is a Russian metal band that comes with their fourth opus entitled Theomorphic Defectiveness. The album consists of only six (lengthy) tracks including "March October", a Skepticism cover, which can be heard below. However, on this new record they offer us something which is very representative of for this kind of music.

The band is playing a funeral doom, which has almost become a trademark for the still evolving and developing Russian (metal) scene. Meanwhile, they continue to surprise me with each new opus showing off all of their many talents and professional skills. Even though they're playing a traditional funeral doom they are unlike anyone else. Their music is gloomy, majestic, intense and pretty insane too. It is recognizable mostly for its unique atmosphere sounding like a funeral orchestra playing a soundtrack to apocalypse. It is naturally very depressive, haunting, desolate and misanthropic feel to their music, just as it is supposed to be.

This trio from Moscow successfully incorporates new and various keyboard effects together with those slow parts, rasping dark and majestic growling vocals, as well as strings, choirs, piano and brass instruments.

This fourth opus is overall another success for this Russian group. The band sounds like still on the search for that perfect expressive sound, but with Theomorphic Defectiveness they've done an almost perfect job. The insanity goes on and you're invited to take a free ride.
