Abstract Spirit, Who Dies In Siberian Slush.

Second full-length album for this Russian band that has recently (actually a few days ago) announced its split, so Comatose Vigil is no more, at least that's what they say.
"Fuimus, non Sumus..." is composed by only 3 tracks, of course, very long ones, so that the total playing of this CD is more than 75 minutes! If you don't know this band yet you should know they are deeply planted in the desolate, depressive fields of Funeral Doom Metal. This album benefits from a crystal clear sound that allows the listener to be attentive to any and all instruments or composition parts and analyze this music as he/she desires. The instrumental part is quite minimalist, but the occasional background guitar leads, keyboard atmospheres and growling vocals freshen the whole a bit giving it a mysterious aura that's worth being discovered. This is definitely recommended to connaisseurs of Funeral Doom, but I would also suggest it to the old-school Doom Death Metal followers nonetheless.

A címadó dal “Fuimus, Non Sumus” angolul szólal meg, a “Autophobia” németül, míg a “The Day Heaven Wept” oroszul szólal meg. Szóval bátran ajánlom a nagyérdeműnek a lemez hallgatását, és bátran adják át magukat ennek a végtelenül sötét hangvételű korongnak szellemi erejüket.

his is one of the most odd, bizarre and obscure doom metal releases I’ve heard lately. Alone the moniker of this Russian (Moscow) trio; Comatose Vigil is strange, but adding to that the new title for the new album Fuimus, Non Sumus (translate; We Are, We Are Not) it is getting really strange.

Their latest material is actually only a three-tracker CD, where each of the three tracks is a virtual sonic marathon. Only the shortest song “Autophobia” is app. 23 minutes long. Obviously, it is very lengthy and monotonous material, but I guess it was done deliberately. Alone the core nature of this release is a funeral doom with distorted down-tuned guitars, growled and slow-paced vocals, plodding drums and a lot of keyboard atmospheric parts. Main lyrical themes are about death, solitude, despair and pain.

Fuimus, Non Sumus is bizarre, scary and emotional material, but this special raw atmosphere and some variation in the sound is desperately needed. Like the case is now, no single track is different than the rest, although all three nicely packed into the depressive, monotonous and repetitive background soundtrack for any perfect funeral.

Comatose Vigil is a band that is active for over 8 years in the music branch. You might think that after 8 years they should be well known in the metal scene, well due to their musical approach and what music style they play, the band is more known in the underground metal scene.

Over the years the band has released three demos (2003 – 2004), an EP (2006) and two full length albums. “Fuimus, non Sumus”, the second full length album of the band and the album we’re going to talk about is release 6 years after the first release, “Not a Gleam of Hope”, back in 2005.

If we say that the break between albums was long, then we can say as easily that the songs on the album are equally long. There is a saying, “You know it’s funeral doom, if the intro is longer than 5 minutes” … well, “Fuimus, non Sumus” has only 3 songs, but all three songs are with a playing time longer than 20 minutes and the entire album has a total length of 1 hour and 15 minutes. Three songs and one hour of crushing, slow, droning, funeral doom.

The album is not reinventing the genre, there are no experimental passages, the approach is very rigid and classic. If you’re not into funeral doom and slow, oppressing music, then “Fuimus non Sumus …” is not the album that will make you fond and interested into funeral doom, it has classic funeral doom trademarks.

Unlike “Not a Gleam of Hope” and the other releases, the album seems to put a stronger emphasis, but not exaggerated, on the keyboards / synthesizer and it has a better feeling for fine details. The sound created by them is more evolved, there is a more professional approach to it, all of this giving the album a very cathedral background sound, it creates the mystical, dark and mournful atmosphere.

Apart from this, the rest of the album continues the cold, dark and gloomy journey that Comatose Vigil used us with. Distorted guitars, heavy and very slow paced riffs, insanely slow drum rhythm and heavily growled vocals. It is a doom album that follows the line of the previous releases but in a more balanced, mature and rich way.

“Fuimus non Sumus …” is a cold, oppressive and very atmospheric funeral march, a quick pass from existence to non existence, a easy way to say “We are, we are not” and I must say that this album is and it’s going to be a “classic” among funeral doom albums.

One more review today from our Russian friends, this one from the Funeral Doom band Comatose Vigil. It’s been five years since the band released their EP “Narcosis” and after a few line-up changes the band returned to their original line-up to record and release “Fuimus Non Sumus”

With some metal sub-genre’s it’s difficult to know exactly what the music will sound like. Genre’s such as Black Metal have so many different styles that while you may know basically what to expect, you’ll be hard pressed to peg down the exact sound. Funeral Doom however, sounds exactly as the name implies. It’s always a dark, slow, heavy, depressing, cold dirge. One problem with such a definable style of music is that it tends to get stale; the various bands start to sound the same. So it’s refreshing when a band is able to maintain the genre while creating something original.

Now I am no expert when it comes to the genre but after listening to “Fuimus Non Sumus” many times over the last few weeks, it’s obvious to me that Comatose Vigil manages to do just that.

With only three songs, all of which come in around the 25 minute mark, the songs here are long, cold brooding dirges of despair. And even with the length, the songs never bored me, there are some repetitive parts and the songs could have been a little shorter but overall, I never felt my self waiting for them to end.

If you are familiar with the genre and have the time to commit, this is an excellent album, however, if you have yet to experience Funeral Doom and you prefer your music is short bursts, you’ll probably want to stay clear.
