Not A Gleam Of Hope”.

Of zoiets.

Hogyan is képzeljük el a Comatose Vigil zenéjét? Fenséges és tökéletes halálba vezető atmoszféra, szép, lassan hömpölygő örvény és reménytelenség. Műfajukat leginkább funeral doom stílusnak lehetne leírni. Az új dal, a „Narcosis" kétféle szövegverzióban, angolul és oroszul is felkerült a kislemezre. A harmadik szám pedig egy Crematory feldolgozás a "Tears of Time” dalra, ami állítólag nem fog sehol máshol megjelenni. Szóval igazi kincs ez a kislemez. Először beszéljünk inkább a saját szerzeményükről, a „Narcosis” dalról.

Utoljára a Thorns of Carrion lemezen hallottam ennyire sivár és kegyetlen könyörtelen pusztaságot.

Steady paces, hypnotic movements, Comatose Vigil brand of doom pretends to suggest a groovy atmosphere, a solemn march through darkness in the vein of the classic slow doom bands. Several listenings after, the veredict isn´t certainly outstanding for this Russian act, since their purposements don´t succeed when trying to create something unique. The synths and guitars drive the sound without complexities, the arrangements are simple but effective. The guitars are not the fuzzy, doooown-tuned, abyssic kind. The keys are quite monotonous and the chord progression is rapidly swallowed by the listener and it´s easy to get bored after some minutes. The band fail if they try to make reflective music or achieve a certain emotional crescendo through variation. That´s a too high expectation, taking into account the narrow range of nuances the band work with. I miss some risk, some variation, some courage trying to do something outside well-trodden patterns. “Narcosis” is ok; the performance is correct, the sound is clean and there are no major flaws in the technical side. However, it lacks emotion and variation somehow. The repetitive schemes are the major wound. Moreover, to release the same song twice is a big mistake. Of course this is a single, an EP or whatever you call it, but this style doesn´t make the difference when the only variation is lyrics language...
As for the bonus track, it seems like a song to fill the release. The keys may sound even a bit gothic. The pace is faster than in “Narcosis” albeit, strangely enough, one could think it´s more enjoyable than the title track, comparing both cuts. We´re before a release to make known the name of Comatose Vigil that after all is apparently a band with certain potential, as soon as they make some steps further into the pit and let their souls be driven by inspiration in their next work.

A limited edition of this EP, actually lasting over 36 minutes, makes me feel a proud possessor along with other 899 lucky ones.

The first track is in English, while the second in Russian, yet it is still the same song, the title-track, whereas the closer is less Doom, more classically guitar-oriented and Gothic, as it is a cover version of German Crematory's "Tears of Time"; in the end we can say Crematory play a sort of slowed-down Death/Gothic with some breaks along the lines of the early Paradise Lost. After all, a successful cover, yet not a masterpiece.
"Narcosis" reminds of Skepticism, but the keyboards add unique idilliac backgrounds at every passage. Moreover, Comatose Vigil also recur to additional vocals which do not belong to the Finns' repertoire, so it is correct to claim that the Russians' Funeral doom is less minimal, richer not only as for elements but also variations, like the final break, leading to another dimension, as though the listener suddenly fell into it. This different dimension is based on a keys layer, as well as howlings followed by noises similar to underwater laments of an animal or an autistic child drowning.
Guitars as heavy as boulders, ethereal keyboards, drumming sometimes majestic and grim, sometimes sliding away onto your heads are the quintessence of compositions that will make your spine thrill, suitable to abruptly decrease the temperature in your room of 30° C.
A further mention must go to the singer, clever both when it is necessary to be raw and when the scream or the growl doesn't need too much scraping, the guitarist and keyboardist, precise and essential.

This mini-CD, gifted with a basic artwork and lyrics concerning a deeper approach between a man and the Earth makes my mind travel not only above graveyards but also vast spaces, where nature is still almost completely incontaminated.
Excellent prosecution, let's hope there will be new stuff from this band in the future after two years of silence.
