Smutná současnost dnešní Ukrajiny a doslova tragické vyhlídky k nějakému razantnímu zlepšení situace.

Trápení a trápení lidu ukrajinského a bohužel trápení i v podobě CRYPT OF SILENCE.

Last week I was poring over a list of new releases and saw the band name Crypt of Silence. I thought that was pretty cool sounding, so I looked the band up on YouTube to try to hear them. After a brief listen I started going back through all my promo emails looking to see if I had received anything on the band. Nada. I tried iTunes, but had no luck there either. I finally hit pay dirt at Bandcamp. For a mere $3.99 the album was mine.

Crypt of Silence is a Ukrainian death doom band and “Beyond Shades” is their recently released first album. While I was looking for the album it was hard to find much of anything at all about the band, but some time in the last few days a page has popped up on the band over at The Metal Archives, so I was able to find some little bit of information.

When I started listening to “Beyond Shades” these guys had me before I even heard any vocals. Granted, the vocals don’t show up until just after five minutes into the first song, but the music was so good that I wasn’t going to care how the vocals sounded.

Not that I had to worry, the vocals are really good too. For the most part they tend toward impressive harsh vocals that sound like they should leave the guys throat shredded, but he does some pretty impressive clean doom style vocals as well. This was the clincher; beautiful and melancholy metal music with very competent harsh and clean vocals? I am entirely sold on Crypt of Silence. I have been searching for a new album like this one, and now that I have found it I am going to be listening to this album incessantly for months.

There are only four songs on “Beyond Shades,” but two of them are over eleven minutes, one is over twelve and the final song is over 14 minutes. That means almost 50 minutes of music over four tracks. Nice!

There are all kinds of great doom-style guitar pieces, both clean and distorted. Long instrumental passages will lull you into a relaxed and depressive state, and then bam, the drums and harsh vocals will slam into you and shake you from your reverie. The mix of beauty and power is impressive. I like that the mix leaves all the different elements plenty of room to breathe; there is a feeling of big open spaces when listening to these songs with headphones.

Seriously, if you are at all into doom or death doom, you need to check out Crypt of Silence. I really do love this album. But I don’t expect you to take my word on it. Give a listen below to the album’s opening track “Walk With My Sorrow.” Enjoy!

The eyes of the world are currently focused on Ukraine because of the political situation there. That's where the band Crypt Of Silence hail from. Beyond Shades is their debut album.

The songs are long and epic doom metal with death influences and harsh vocals. On the opening 12 minute track "Walk With My Sorrow" they establish their musical identity for the first five minutes with somber guitars and even a bass interlude before the vocals kick in about five minutes in. Each of the four songs unfolds slowly, sinking in deeper after multiple listens. It's a melancholy album full of emotion and despair.

Convivial Hermit #7

Though it might have been frustrating to the few people familiar with the band in Ukraine, I think it was a laudable move on the part of Crypt of Silence to keep silent for five years after forming in 2009. Of course, there might have been other reasons, but upon listening to Beyond Shades, one at least gets the feeling that the album is the outcome of serious thought and deliberation, not something pulled out of somebody's ass and stitched together from a few months of rehearsals. The four tracks of Beyond Shades slowly and carefully unwind at over 10 minutes apiece, fencing the listener in with melancholic negativity with a surprisingly high standard of riffs - I mean to say, these riffs actually have something of their own to communicate and don't sound as if they've been recycled ten times over before they found their place here (which is pretty rare these days). What's more, the album does not sound as if it was pasted together on a computer with a drum program supplying the pace; the songs feel organic, fluid and lacking in anything pejoratively "digital," aside from the clarity of the sound. It is due to these qualities that I had positive impressions of this album. It even reminded me of early Mourning Beloveth. However, as I returned to the recording later the lack of overall originality, despite the riffs, grow more bothersome. I think that Crypt of Silence are a good group, heads above many of the other countless doom/death bands out there today, who just have not yet found their own sound and identity. Hopefully that will occur soon enough. In the meantime, for anyone who yearns for the old 90s doom/death sound and who is more forgiving of the originality factor, I feel confident that the debut of this young group will satisfy for at least a few spins.

Négy nóta a zenei tisztaság jegyében.
A dalok középrészében finoman kidolgozott instrumentális részek, néha akusztikus pillanatok csaponganak. Van ennek a muzsikának egyfajta átszellemült, naiv bája, amelynek eredményeként a hallgató mosolyogva kel fel a hifi elől. Ezt tényleg kevesekről tudnám elmondani.

Dalokat nem érdemes kiemelni, kortalan művészi előadás ez, amit minden doom/death hívőnek hallania kellene. Engem kilóra megvettek! Köszönet érte.

This intense, traditional death-doom moves at an unhurried, regal pace. Ukraine’s Crypt Of Silence have created four colossal tracks, each measuring 11 minutes or more, that offer a beautifully simple, subtle grandeur. Solitude Productions have unearthed another gem.
