The third album from German band Doomed continues the dark affair of Pierre Laube started with his previous works: traditional sound based on powerful harsh rhythm guitars, low accented bass and intensive solo guitars – everything is fully packed and ready to shake the surroundings! «Our Ruin Silhouettes» ia a perfectly found balance between uncompromising brute and heavy doom death metal in the classical vein and non-sentimental melodicism. Pim Blankenstein (Officium Triste and The 11th Hour) and Andreas Kaufmann (Hatespawn and Charon (DE)) appear as the guest vocalists at the album. And, finally, Doomed have managed to provide their fans with conceptual album art inside 12-page booklet.

Although it's a one man band, Doomed seems to be a live act, too, since Pierre Laube usually gets session musicians for his live acts, and that's impressive and gives more trust in this moniker and its ambitions. This is its third full-length album and second out on Solitude Productions, and I have to say it's a crushing hour of music, 7 tracks of traditional Doom Death Metal highlighted by brutal, low-tuned guitar riffs, melodic leads and solos, deep guttural vocals, intense bass lines and tight druming, and I also have to mention the crystal clear, awesome production by Pierre himself, probably he should think of making this a real job as I'm sure a lot of similar bands would appreciate and book his work. Ah, and the cover and booklet artworks are all done by Pierre, too, so I guess with this new release he makes a statement and it might be a real milestone for him as an artist, I'm sure a good reaction from the listeners will give him more courage to continue on this way. What I liked the most about this release were the guitar leads and solos, they sound like starting to have an own identity, and if developed in the same direction I'm sure we'll soon say the band has its own identity in this scene. If you think you'll like a tough, melodic and just a bit melancholic Doom Death Metal with a stong approach on the Death side, too, go for it, this is a very good choice.

Starý opuštěný dům. Rozvaliny kdysi živoucího organismu. Do zdí obtisknuté vzpomínky, smích i pláč, stíny a siluety postav.

S „Our Ruin Silhouettes“ je to podobné.

This review deals with the German act Doomed, and not the American or, to my concern, the Antarctic one. This act was formed in 2011 in Saxony by Pierre Laube, and in 2012 Doomed satisfied us with two albums, the self-released The Ancient Path, and In My Own Abyss, their debut for Solitude Productions.

Our Ruined Silhouettes, which lasts for about fifty five minutes (for seven tracks that last in between six and nine minutes), opens with When Hope Disappears. It features guest vocals by Pim Blankenstein, whom you might know from Officium Triste, also a very unhappy and un-fast combo. The track starts with an esoteric multiple-voiced chant, a soft-screamingly guitar line, and some church bells -very nice!- before turning, after one minute, into a mostly oppressing and grimly-atmospheric piece of Funeral Doom. For a better part, the quality generally lies in the huge variation, and more specifically in the unique and perfectly executed mixture of hypnotic tremolo leads, the deep-throated grunts, and the slow-paced yet extremely heavy rhythm section. Every excerpt has its own character, with a focus on a total experience, a totality that translates dreamy mindscapes into Aural Art. It’s not by being varying that everything just fits. In Doomed’s case, however, it’s always a (figuratively) shot in the (figuratively) bull’s eye, figuratively seen, of course. Each single minute brings something new that accompanies this aural experience to dimensions beyond light or darkness. And still there’s a coherence, which makes each single composition a majestic journey, and the whole album a majestic² journey. The whole multi-layered experience introduces some of the purest elements from related and (sometimes) equally-blessed genres, like Traditional Old School Doom-Death -you know, the primal scene, without fake catchy electronics of modernist additions- or Black Metal from the most freezing and desolate kind. And to go on… Doomed do not eschew to explore other sonic dimensions by having the whole recording injected by some experimental moments too - though these ones being decently mixed and well-adapted to the whole conceptual approach.

Just for your information: besides Officium Triste’s Pim Blankenstein, also Andreas ‘Deathmonger’ Kaufmann (known from e.g. Charon, Impending Doom, Krypta, Hatespawn a. o.) figures as guest vocalist, on The Last Meal.

A to používá pouze jednoduchou formulku – „hudba více či méně doomová, anebo „hudba více či méně deathmetalová“. Jeden z rychlejších kvapíků je např. ke slyšení ve skladbě „The Last Meal“, jediném to záchvěvu, kdy potemnělá atmosféra ustupuje kytarovému hromobití.

Celkově je ovšem nahrávka o totální valivosti a ponurosti, přičemž nelze opomenout ani dosti tvrdou kytarovou slupku, umocněnou vskutku parádním zvukem.

Daar is alles mee gezegd.

A few years ago I reviewed this one man project’s second album of starkly despairing doom-death metal. Pierre Laube from Germany is the creative force behind Doomed, overseeing all aspects of artistic direction. Multi-instrumentalist, writer, layout designer and cover creator the man certainly is a talented individual. The art work adorning has the theme of a sickly dirty green backdrop with various silhouetted characters scrambling upon a tormented likewise silhouetted head. The type face used on the titles is difficult to read in places and all that coupled to his unique ability to write doom-death monsters means you have to take everything into consideration and not just the music.

With seven tunes clocking over 50 minutes, this is a sprawling and arduous sonic journey that will melt your mind and devour your soul, if you let it. A distorted monastic chant starts the opening track of “When Hope Disappear” before a deep growl and punishing riff soaks into your head. Pace is slow as expected, with haunting and drifting melodies creating a Katatonia like style I suggested in my review of the previous album. The glaring melodies are often superseded by monochromatic deathly dirges of violence. That violence is slow, tortured and painful as “In My Own Abyss” (also the title of the last album) with its snare drum marching style and some really beastly vocals. The song slithers along, grimily and toxically infecting every inch of your head.

“The Last Meal” starts slow but is jolted by a sudden blast that disappears as quick as it arrived. The structure is strange, schizoid, and manic, the tune is laboured in parts but then contrasts with the behemothic doom sludge style. Is it possible to enjoy albums like this or does one endure them as some form of cathartic release, certainly the album isn’t for a jolly night with your mates, more appropriate to wallow in self pity, where deranged melodies traumatise the listener with the sauntering pace and deviant harmonies. This album seems darker, more sinister and mournful than the previous release, a sign of the mood at the time of writing, “Our Ruin Silhouettes” is a driving dirge, with soulful aggression married to despondent threnodies.

Forgotten Path
5/10

Maybe I have sclerosis or maybe it’s because of info overload, but I can’t remember writing about this band. But there it is in the last issue, page 88, 4/10 - another boring, annoyed, clichéd review. Oddly enough, I still can’t remember having listened to or written about Doomed. Most probably in a couple of days I will forget about “Our Ruin Silhouettes” as well and not without the reason.
Doomed’s new release has a good balance between Death and Doom Metal with some features of Funeral Doom; it has slow tempo and an engaging, gloomy atmosphere. Song structures and vocals are quite standard; drums and guitars go well together and there’s a commendable lack of melodiousness. I can’t point out anything else because it’s a pretty uninventive album just as the previous one. Doomed made the same mistakes or rather stuck to the boring truths and so “Our Ruin Silhouettes” lacks potential and energy. Its only advantage is that the album is easy to listen to and would work great as background music at midnight.

East German doom project started by Laube in 2011, creating a traditional sound based on powerful harsh rhythm guitars, low accented bass and intensive solo guitars.

Starting with bells and various choral voices 'When Hope Disappears' grabs the attention straight away, soon moves into slow pounding doom with gutteral vocals.
The guitar is very melodic playing harmonies as opposed to de-tuned powerchords.
Towards the end the pace picks up, very 70's in style, then ends on more harmony.

Slow funeral doom for six solid minutes and 'In My Own Abyss' creates the perfect soundtrack for misery.

While 'A Reccurent Dream' returns to the style of track 1, the next one, 'The Last Meal', is more Black Metal with hyper drumming mixing it up with slower passages

Some really nice spoken word parts to 'My Hand In Yours', bringing yet another element to Laube's clever take on the doom genre, even some late 60's sounding guitar playing in this one.

'Revolt'could almost be a mainstream heavy metal song, quite a "nice" commercial take on Doom riffs, very catchy guitarwork, and a hypnotic drum beat.

Some prog elements to 'What Remains' at the start and then keeps the pace throughout, this one, again, has a lot more to offer than just Doom, very well put together, some striking bass work towards the end and that deep demonic vocal style all go to create something special.
