Solitude Productions с гордостью представляет альбом легендарной норвежской группы, под названием «To Mourn Is A Virtue». Этот релиз – недостающее звено, между классическим альбомом группы «Tragedies» (1995 год) и «In Fields Of Pestilent Grief» (2002 год). «To Mourn Is A Virtue» может стать неожиданным открытием для поклонников группы и для тех, кто интересуется жанром.

Convivial Hermit #6

Exhumed from a 15 year slumber, Funeral’s “To Mourn Is A Virtue” is an extremely unusual album, to say the least. Originally recorded by the infamous Mags in the Academy Studio in Yorkshire, England, where bands such as Anathema and My Dying Bride have worked, this 1996 release was originally meant to be a demo and little else, and did not even have its current title, if I understood the booklet information correctly, until five of its tracks were selected and sent out to various labels – with no success. Consequently it collected dust on a shelf somewhere for a decade and a half, until Solitude Productions decided to unearth it. Why it was not released earlier had probably to do with the lack of vocals. Sara E., who dropped in and out of the band during this period, was recruited to sing on five of the tracks, only one of which has been included here. The rest of the songs in which she sings were replaced by different versions; tracks one to four feature the abominable voice of Frode Forsmo, who sang on the bands last two albums, and five to eight Oystein R., who appeared on In Fields of Pestilent Grief, possibly the bands greatest album. So in essence this is a hodgepodge of different vocalists taking turns at singing tracks from an older demo. The music is correctly described by Anders (presumably) in the booklet as a bridge between Tragedies and In Fields of Pestilent Grief, although with much greater weight toward the latter. None of the songs are long or drag out very much and the classical touches, like the baroque style guitar interludes, are mostly missing. Nevertheless, the material is quite strong in parts, displaying a classic attitude to doom that is seldom heard these days, and the production is hard to complain about, a muscular, thick, yet rounded production with a very nice equalization through all of the instruments. It is easy to hear that the vocals were put in only later, those of Frode, for instance, recorded 9 years later. It wasn’t soon enough that Frode departed since, in my opinion, he completely ruined the atmosphere of the band after the In Fields album with his monotone, droning voice. I simply could not enjoy From These Wounds from 2006, no matter how much I tried, thanks to him. Here, similarly, the same story applies, but the music overshadows him, to a degree, as these are riffs written during the days when Einar Fredriksen and Christian Loos were still around in the band. Curiously, the first few times I listened to this collection I could not spot a difference between Oystein’s voice and Frode’s – indeed, I thought it was the same person! They tend to sing very alike... I had to check the booklet and listen carefully again to notice the difference. Of nine tracks, the final one, Wrapped All In Woe with Sara E., is easily the very best, and makes this compilation worth buying, in my view. It’s an extraordinary song that brings out everything I like about this band, on par with In Fields, definitely. As for the rest, there are moments, but none are as consistently strong from beginning to end.

The booklet design features a painting by the French realist, William-Adolphe Bouguereau, which is quite fitting to the band and concept. The rest of the art is, however, rather stark and empty, with iterations of the same painting appearing throughout. It would have been nice to find some new photos of the band, for instance. Apparently there is an unreleased video of the recording process of the To Mourn demo. They could have taken some stills from there, possibly. Regardless, this is a quite decent, long overdue recording. Excepting the first four tracks, I think it was very much worth releasing and is worth its weight for the final song alone.

Funeral is a cult doom metal band hailing from neighbouring Norway. Their latest material has been released through Russian-based Solitude Productions and To Mourn Is a Virtue is the title for this 9-tracker.

To Mourn Is a Virtue is actually a collection of demos and recordings made by this band between 1996 and 2004, being a true treasure for any die-hard fan of the band and the genre. All the songs have been remastered and sound more or less fresh and modern despite of its relatively high age.

Funeral’s approach on these recordings is well-known, but equally interesting and captivating as before. The band delivers some crushing power riffs, mournful guitar melodies, slow tempo drumming, thick bass-lines holding the whole thing together, and finally; melancholic and tragic vocals, that most of the time are just spoken words, rather than singing. The closing track “Wrapped All In Woe” the vocal-duties were taken by a female called Sara E.

Funeral manages to break the monotony with some piano or/and keys interludes, adding another dimension to their sound. It shows a self-confident and secure band, which is not afraid to experiment.

The overall feeling is the one of joy and pleasure, and despite of the tragic and desolate nature of this material, it kind of gets you in a right winter mood. Anyhow, this will definitely not be the last of album of Funeral that I’m going to check out.

“TO MOURN IS A VIRTUE”, so der klangvolle Name des aktuellen Outputs, stellt dabei keine gewöhnliche Veröffentlichung dar.

TO MOURN IS A VIRTUE” gleich drei Vokalisten verantwortlich.

Funeral Doom is an interesting genre, while it can be powerful and emotionally stirring, it can also be extremely boring. The music is meant to be slow, but should it really feel like its slow? The music should be engaging enough to make excite the listener.

One of the original bands to explore the genre is Norway’s aptly titled Funeral and they are one of those bands that know how to make this music exciting, and they do just that with their latest release “To Mourn is a Virtue.”

The album is actually a collection of unreleased demo-recordings, and it contains nine previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1996 and 2004, all of which were remastered in 2010. While the band has evolved into a more Death Metal influenced Doom band, this album documents their start in the Funeral/Classic Doom style.

The music here is a mix of acoustic passages, slow, glacial drumming, heavy riffing and dark, melancholic vocals and together it creates that atmosphere I crave from my music. For me, the mark of a great record is its power to affect me at an emotional level, its cathartic in that the darkness helps exercise my own demons and I actually come away from it refreshed and this album does that at times. While some of the songs are a little weak and there are moments where I’m not sure what the band was thinking, this is overall an excellent release.

The Funeral Doom genre is not for the casually listener. It takes a bit of commitment and an interest in the various extremes of metal, but for those with the patience and willingness to explore those extremes, it can be extremely rewarding. If you’re up for the challenge, I would highly recommend “To Mourn is a Virtue.”

Funeral are veterans of the Doom Metal scene being around since 1991 and releasing 6 full-lenght albums so far. This sixth one is actually a compilation of older material recorded between 1996 and 2004, with 3 different vocals: the first one sings on tracks 1-4 and gives the band a deep, grave atmosphere, the second one on tracks 5-8 is more epic, and the third one, a lady, on track 9 brings a gothic-like feeling into the band's music, but one thing is certain, they are all good and can make the difference from other such bands, it's like listening to 3 different bands on this release. The instrumental part isn't special, there's nothing to stand out from the crowd, but that doesn't mean it's bad, just not special. The tracks being re-mastered in 2010 benefit from a crystal clear production, so I recommend this to all Gothic Funeral Doom Metal followers out there.

How Death May Linger, Father, Wrapped all in Woe.

As The Light Does The Shadow.
