Az első dal, amit szinte az elejétől a végéig élveztem, a negyedik Mourning Of The Sun. Itt be lett lőve a légkör, olyan egy kicsit, mintha az Amorphis Tales from the Thousand Lakes lemezét összegyúrtuk volna Ed Warby fentebb említett doom bandájával.

When Nothing Remains is a project founded by members of famous Swedish band Nox Aurea, a project where the clean vocals are being performed by Johan Ericson (Draconian, Doom:VS and Shadowgarden).

When you have this kind of persons in a band you can’t expect less than a very professional album.
“As All Torn Asunder” is an album where experience really makes its presence felt and in a somewhat ironic way, it brings a fresh air in the doom metal scene, counting on more classical approach. What’s this approach; it’s all about emotions, gloomy emotions, a deadly marriage between melancholy, longing and love.

Love? … Yeah, I could say that “As All Torn Asunder” has a very “romantic” touch, something that reminds me a little of My Dying Bride (especially on the lyrics part) and if we are here, at this subject, there are also some similarities with Draconian, Lethian Dreams, some songs go in that direction … not sure if it has anything to do with Johan Ericson (Draconian, Doom:VS) … The album is a very atmospheric, dark-romantic and melodic doom.

I will not go into “technical” details because the album is made by professionals with a solid background in the doom metal scene, they know their stuff. A thing I must say, the guitar is very sorrowful and melancholic, probably the most haunting element on the entire album. The clean and harsh vocals are also very well mixed in.
“As All Torn Asunder” has almost everything, very profound intros - “Embrace her pain”, aggressive rhythms and passages – “Her life lost”, a dark-romantic atmosphere - “As All Torn Asunder” and a very mournful outro.

It is not an album that will break the barriers in terms of innovation , but it certainly is an very well done album, an album full of emotions and a superb cover.

By some strange fluke of nature the swedes know how to do this thing with music.
- They have a music export that is worth millions and millions.
- They’ve produced international hits like Abba and as a metal nation created iconic bands such as Europe.
It’s in their blood and genes. They just know how to do it.

Bottom line is still that swedes have their niches that they do extremely well. We have Melodic death metal. Then there is Pop-music. Many great Power metal bands have also come from Sweden.
So how do they deal with Doom metal?

When Nothing Remains has a clearly Scandinavian take on doom, but it is closer to their Finnish contemporaries than anything Swedish. At times you get a strong Amorphis vibes from the material and overall the music leans more towards Finnish melancholia than Swedish optimism.

The music itself is rather much done according to the death/doom textbook. The music has the accoustic passages, growls and clean vocals. When Nothing Remains is not a carbon copy of anything, but does not feast on originality either.
The most powerful thing is the vibe you get afterwards. You find yourself thinking “that wasn’t all bad” - though you can’t lift any song out from the whole, nor hum any given melody off the album.

Clearly the swedes do now what they are up to in making good music, but the lack of originality is a nail in When Nothing Remains coffin.

The musical conception behind the awesome cover art hides a grim world full of sadness and pain. The slow and hymnic compositions lure the listener with melodies of rattling and sometimes clean vocal. The dark beauty of the album calls you like the songs of nymphs to have a dip in this mournful world while the whirl of songs grasp and pull us deeper and depper.

A svéd When Nothing Remains a semmiből felbukkanás művészetét űzi. Bár a csapat két éve alakult, mindenféle előzetes demó nélkül most teszik le elénk bemutatkozó lemezüket, aminek sötét romantikát árasztó borítójának King Diamond biztos egy teljes lemezt tudna szentelni. Peter Laustsen gitáros annak idején a Nox Aurea-ban is játszott, talán ennek köszönhető, a két csapat közti számos hasonlóság.

Szerencsére a borongós dallamok szépen végigvezetnek a művön.

A Portrait of the Dying az eddigiekhez képest lendületesen indít, csak a refrénre lassít be. A közepén lévő nyugis részben a tiszta ének mintha női énekhanggal lenne színezve.

A Mourning of the Sun személyes kedvencem.

A Solaris sem a gitárokra épül, hanem a zongorára. Bizonyára a borító miatt szeretném mindenáron benne látni, zeneileg nincs sok közük egymáshoz.

Az In Silence I Conceal the Pain egy szép, lassú dallammal indít. A második verzénél lesz érdekes a nóta, itt ugyanis a szokásos hosszan kitartott riffek helyett szaggatott, tompítottakat használnak.

Captivated by the wonderful dim cover artwork… I was eager to listen to their music… I was hoping the music would fit the doomed, shadowy background of the artwork… and hopefully, I was pretty much nicely surprised by When Nothing Remains.

The band is coming from Sweden and was formed in early 2010 by Peter Laustsen (Nox Aurea, The Cold Existence, Rimfrost) and Jan Sallander (The Cold Existence). The music can be described as emotional, melodic, dark, atmospheric, heavy, doom, death metal… but there’s more to it than meets the eye… as it is inspired and very well produced and arranged. Bands like: My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost, Ablaze In Hatred, Swallow The Sun and Draconian… will cross your mind when listening to the album… but When Nothing Remains… are adding their own doomed, melodic ethereal touches to their music… making it more dusky and mesmerizing. The production is excellent… very clear and “rich”. The album was mixed and mastered by Johan Ericson (Draconian, Doom:VS and Shadowgarden) who has also handled the clean vocals.

You will need several listens so as to capture the cold, doomy atmosphere of the album… and enter the mysterious, emotionless, condemned place where everything’s shadow and dust. The lyrics will be your flashlight in this dusky place… while you’ll be searching for an exodus out of this damned sinister domain. You have to enter deep inside this dark realm… for having a chance to come up clean after your personal catharsis... or you will be forever lost in the impassive paths of the netherworld…

The amazing doomed artwork… is showing the Charon waiting in his chariot for her ghost… as she’s leaving him and the up world… so as to enter the Underworld forever… an instant pic as the “Tears”… drop from his eyes… while saying the last farewell. Follow When Nothing Remains in the shadowland if you wanna taste the dramatic fated depressing music… that rules in Hades…

As, they say on their official FB page, they are already working on the next release which is gonna have some more female vocals. By making the songs shorter at times and adding more clean male & female vocals they can easily deliver a new album that will amaze us. This release is essential for the friends of the aforementioned bands…

PS: This is, probably, the best cover artwork of the year…
