Hmm. I think this label really aught to rethink their definition of a “best of.” Last month on this site we reviewed one by Mournful Gust, a band who have released a whopping…er, 2 albums in their career, and now it appears they have done the same for Canonis, who while having been around since the early 90’s have only put out a few demos in that time. Considering they are a virtually unknown band probably with the exception of a few people in their home country of Russia, I would have thought it would make sense just to call this a debut album and be done with it – plenty of bands rework demo tracks for their first album after all. It’s not as though this is a particularly disjointed affair that one might expect from a compilation either, in fact to me this actually works rather well. So rant over, now I’ll get to the music.

If you’re really au fait with the Solitude/BMM roster then this is perhaps not quite what you’ll be expecting. Their stuff is typically in the death/gothic/drone doom category, and Canonis lacks the heaviness that can be heard in a lot of these releases. If you’re seeking something crushing and brutal then this is definitely not for you, but if you appreciate a more wistful, Gothic sound then read on. The album soars in gently with opening track ‘Apple Of Discord’ which has a subtle piano melody and some female vocals which are rather beguiling. The band doesn’t appear to have a permanent vocalist, with two previous ones listed and with seemingly only two full time members in the band. ‘Memoria Vasta’ is quite a striking number with its vocal lines of ‘Twinkle twinkle little star, like a diamond in the sky’ (I’m sure they missed a couple of lines out from that rhyme!) It’s pretty and rather ethereal, while the music behind is brittle and understated with a dark, mournful feel to it.

The vocals on ‘Cold Sea’ are particularly pleasant, wailing out like an exotic bird over a mellow, acoustic backdrop, while I like the Celtic infusion on ‘Snow River.’ There’s a rather aquatic feel to some of the later tracks which fits in with the titles – the sound of waves crashing on ‘The Aquarell’ which is a nice, dreamy number which is suddenly accosted by violins which add a sense of elegance. ‘Amalgama’ has a whimsical charm and quite a romantic flow to it. The saccharine vocals here bring to mind Liv Kristine. This is a really pleasant and enjoyable album, perfect for a lazy Sunday morning; it’s fragile, feminine and haunting – perhaps not suited to you if you’re after something to bang your head to but for those with an open mind this is worth a listen.

The Russian outfit Canonis is a legend in the district of Naberezhnye Chelny. I kid you not! ‘Apple Of Dischord’ is some sort of best of collection from all their recorded singles, dating back to 1997! The sound of the middle ages, the dark folk music, the intriguing piano pieces, the strong powerful guitars and melancholic power ballad female vocals in either Russian or English remind me of bands like Die Verbannte Kinder Eva’s and Penance. This could have been bigger if their geographical situation had been different. The CD has a great production, a nice lay out and entertaining and exciting sound twists. This CD-R includes professional printing, a booklet, a flyer and a hand-numbered certificate with unique copy number )since this edition is limited to merely one hundred copies). To top it off, it is packed in a mini-LP-sleeve of solid cardboard. Dark gothic folk freaks reach for their wallets now!

Canonis is a Russian band, started in 1994, but have only thus far released demos and is as far as I can tell inactive at this moment. This is compilation contains, once again as far as I can tell, most of their recorded material. Sort of based in Doom Metal, but travelling far, far, far into the Gothic realm, much more Gothic Rock then Doom Metal. Definitely not my type of music, nothing I listen to on a regular basis, and nothing that I can claim knowledge in. So I can’t really review this, if you like Gothic music, go to their Myspace page and give them a listen, this is not for me.
