(Edge Of Sanity, Novembre, Opeth, Katatonia, Theatre Of Tragedy)!

If Burton C Bell and Dino Cazares were hopeless romantics with an ear for chamber music they’d renamed their band As Light Dies. On their sophomore effort Ars Subtilior From Within the Cage, Spanish quartet As Light Dies does a nice balancing act between the soulless metric sound of Fear Factory and the lush and overloaded arrangements from an overtly ambitious gothic metal band. That the results are not embarrassing and cheesy is an accomplishment unto itself. Over the course of nearly an hour As Light Dies vocalist Oscar Martin shows his multiple talents and personalities by singing (clean, growls and effected) in Spanish, English and French. It works to a degree because the music is just as over the top. As Light Dies bathe their metal with layers of crystal clear strings, church organ (in fact, they offer a full track of just that in “Die Letzge Fuge Vor Der Flucht”), plentiful of romantic violins and cellos, flutes that approximate Braveheart grandiosity, saccharine female vocals and melodic metal that approximates Viking fromage. Coming from a gothic metal hater, I must admit, this works in several levels. Sure, the sound of this band is all over the place (on “Sombra y Silencio” the band go full cheese, but I forgive them), but somehow, their songs flow and the arrangements though intricate are also easy on the ears.

EP “3 Views Of An End: A Trip To Nowhere” (2004) и LP “A Step Through The Reflection” (2005; издан в 2007) и зарекомендовали себя, как экспериментаторы на попроще дума, дэта, блэка, прогрессива, готики, фолка, в общем, много чего. И экспериментов на альбоме “Ars Subtilior From Within The Cage” действительно немало: прогрессив-техно-дэтовые The Disinherited и Insignificant Among Insignificance с думовыми замедлениями и совершенно отвязной скрипкой, вносящей значительную лепту в творящееся безумие, разнообразные инструменталы – от хоррорового The Very End до этериального Yearning For Blissful..., готик-думовая Le Nebeleux Sentier с блэковой гитарной структурой и ярко выраженным симфонизмом, живой орган на Die Letze Fuge Vor Der Flucht, записанный в кафедральном соборе Alcala de Henares, трогательная Sombra Y Silencio с очень красивым женским вокалом, прогрессив-готик-думовая Trapped In Flesh – самая красивая вещь на альбоме, за счет совершенно замечательной клавишно-скрипичной партии, срывающаяся под конец в совершенно невообразимые дэтовые дебри!

Don't know why, but this band's name gave me the impression I'll have to review a metalcore release... but coming from Solitude Prod. this is highly unlikely and indeed I was wrong, very wrong.
As Light Dies is a quartet from Spain formed in 1999. This is their second album, after "A Step Through the Reflection" released on Mondogo Canibale in 2007. "Ars Subtilior..." is a 9 tracks release lasting for almost an hour. The music on it is very complex and complicated to understand, just immagine a combination of '90's Czech and Polish progressive Gothic / Doom metal scenes (with acts like Demimonde, Lux Occulta, Silent Stream Of Godless Elegy, Cemetery Of Scream, Love History) taken to the extremes. ALD presents here a stunning work, it's hard to believe there's only 4 members in this band, and the instrument that stand in front of the whole is the violin that gives both an atmosphere of melancholy and a crazy, deviant feeling. The vocal part is a plus as well, going from clear, melodic vocals to growls, but also parts of female voices. An original part is the lyrics section written in: Spanish, German, English, French and Italian, differing from track to track. The guitarist is also doing a complex job that might seem too complex, too much for an unwarned listener.
It was fun to listen to this album, it has a looooot of influences, sounds of all kinds, complex rhythms, it is catchy enough, so all in all I recommend it to those of you into listening to an album countless times before understand it completely, this is meat for your teeth. :)

This is another one of those Doom bands that throws in everything, adding more and more to their sound in an effort to create value, without really getting that 'more' is not 'better' in every case. As Light Dies have a sound that is a total mess, mixing heavy riffs, violins, piano, smooth as well as harsh vocals, organ music, narration, sound samples, acoustic guitar...on and on. The problem is that all this stuff should be here for a reason – to serve some songwriting purpose – but it isn't, it's all just there in a desperate attempt to create some excitement and interest. Different sounds come in and rattle around, crashing into each other and creating nothing but a huge mess with no shape or order to it. This isn't unlistenable, but it features no songwriting of any substance or even basic coherence.

По прежнему в музыке AS LIGHT DIES мне слышатся отзвуки норвежцев SOLEFALD и IN THE WOODS…, но на сей раз в ней явственно проглядывает кастильский акцент.

It's nice to have some Spanish musicians that push their music to un(limits) where some renowned international bands did, or even better, sometimes didn't. And some of them, like As Light Dies, do it with a good taste, and also well done. It's to mention, by the way, that they got help by the legendary nineties legend Dan Swanö himself, who mastermixed the album to such a delicate refinement.

Yeah, so the album sounds cool. It's not only that, these Spanish people know to handle their instruments quite well, and move in very varied moods and styles, as you can imagine by the Eclectic tag. And everything is played right, from the brutal death metal parts with blastbeats and things, to the progressive heavy ballad like parts. But my favourite passages are those with violin-sound thingies and strange, inclassifiable moods, that remind of the unknown and uncharted in one's mind. The music is mostly nice, or rather beautiful, but there's the occasional twist to madness here and there, and almost all of the songs have some detail in weirdness to be noted. As well as beautiful parts. Some songs evolve from a rather nice setting into a strange mood, or the other way around, and these changes carry stylistic changes with them. But I miss some black metal moments that I perceived in their previous works, or it may be just the production or me.

So, the songs are eclectic in themselves (note that I write primarily about the "proper" songs, which are just 5, there are some instrumental interludes that fit quite well most of the time and are quite beautiful in general, but I focus on the songs or on the album as a whole). Let's talk about the album, there's eclecticism right from the start if you look at the song titles. That's four different languages, although there's "only" three languages to be sung. Yeah, I don't speak french but to me it's sung in a right way, as well as the (predominant) English songs. Style-wise we have almost every genre one could find in metal (and even small folk and jazz hints), but the good thing is not that eclecticism, the good thing about this record is that when you are listening to it you are not thinking of a collage of metal styles or anything: the different parts flow and interlace in a natural manner, one style serving the other in a succession of riffs and arrangements. And what arrangements! The violin in the album is one of the best performances of this instrument in metal I have heard, because it uses the weird sounds one can obtain, but also the beautiful ones, and never gets over the top. Sometimes it's background and sometimes it makes sounds that set the riff apart from everyday metal.

So, what will I find when listening to this record?

Metal. Despite the wide range of influences they have for sure, the record is Fucking Metal of Many Sorts. You want death metal and brutallity? Here, you have it. Progressive metal and delicate passages with female vocals? Sure! Unclassifiable riffs of brutal metal with clean vocals that send chills and transport me to another dreamy places? Of course, that's what you'll remember the most, indeed. But what defines the album is Metal with all it's energy and emotion, just that the sub-genre is unknown, or depends on the moment, or depends on the listener, or it just warps from genre to genre within seconds.

Fuck it, the only thing you need to know is that this is Metal that you'll remember, that you haven't listened to before even if you recognise the patterns and riffing styles, and that it features Quality and, in the end, it's quite original, despite the apparent "mix a bit of this and a bit of that" philosophy.

Only that one could find annoying/hard/strange to change styles and moods so much in one record, but then, why could you be reading this magazine?
