Russische fascinatie met eeuwenoude culturen, en wel die van de Maya, Aztec en Inca. Civilisaties die wat leefstijl en locatie behoorlijk ver van het thuisland van deze band verwijderd zijn, zou je zeggen. Ach ja, iedere gek z'n fascinatie. In dit geval vijf gekken, die allen op een andere locatie wonen en samen muziek maken via het internet. Een heus virtueel project dus.

Wat sound betreft heeft Tenochtitlan enorm veel weg van Öxxö Xööx. Avant-garde, gemixt met een vleugje doom. Zelfs de machinaal aandoende productie, met zeer heldere gitaren heeft er wat van weg. Vreemde muziek, maar zeker genietbaar, hoewel ik moet zeggen dat Öxxö Xööx toch wel wat sterker is.

Probeer deze bijzondere muziek vooral eens. Verwacht wat niveau betreft niets wereldschokkends, maar de mogelijkheid bestaat dat je verrast wordt en meegevoerd wordt naar verloren tijden.

Помню предыдущие три альбома этого российского виртуального проекта мне совершенно не понравились. Слишком они уж были заумными, скучными и навевали полнейшую тоску в отличие от их западных аналогов, вспомнить хотя бы о BETRAY MY SECRETS или SPI-RITUAL. Однако новый релиз от TENOCHTITLAN мне пришелся по душе. "Сотворение мира" - это атмосферное путешествие в восьми (?) главах повествующее о мифологии народов, принадлежащих культуре Месоамерики. Трио в лице Brutal Harry (DARK DREAM), Lefthander'a (SEA OF DESPERATION, RAXA) и Senmud'a (BITRAYER, HARMANIS), создали действительно интересный альбом о жизни и верованиях ацтеков, майя и инков. Добавьте сюда ещё приятное оформление и вы врядли сможете пройти мимо этого диска.

Nazwa tego zespołu obiła mi się już wcześniej o uszy. Dlatego byłem przygotowany na miksturę etnicznych brzmień z mrocznym, ale i melodyjnym metalem. Taki swoisty dark metal można właśnie napotkać na czwartym już albumie w dyskografii rosyjskiego duetu TENOCHTITLAN. Generalnie rzecz biorąc, to wydawnictwo nie jest niczym absolutnie nowatorskim, ani w żaden sposób niestety nie stworzy ono nowej tendencji do łączenia metalu z elementami folkowo-orientalnymi, ethno-ambientowymi czy jakkolwiek to zwać, bo przed nimi było wielu śmiałków, którzy robili ciekawe rzeczy, ale wielu z nich odeszło w niebyt z nieznanych mi bliżej powodów. Weźmy choćby taki zupełnie zapomniany BETRAY MY SECRETS stworzony przez lidera niemieckiego goth-metalowego DARKSEED, gdzie w doskonały sposób współgrały ze sobą ekstremalny często metal z tak zwaną ‘muzyką świata’, już nie mówiąc o różnych folkowo - mistyczno - metalowych mariażach powstałych na prawie wszystkich kontynentach naszej planety. Jest jednak coś magicznego w dźwiękach komponowanych i nagrywanych przez dwóch muzyków: Lefthandera i Senmutha, a co wciąga i intryguje. Gdyby już na siłę szukać pewnych śladów, które pozwolą wyobrazić sobie cóż ci panowie umieścili na „Sotworienije Mira”, to odwołałbym się do SAMAEL’a ze środkowego okresu ich historii, na pewno też do „Into the Pandemonium” CELTIC FROST, niektórych pozycji z dyskografii PARADISE LOST czy MOONSPELL, ale to tylko pewne symboliczne odnośniki, gdyż nie brakuje tu też heavy metalowych czy wręcz rockowych solówek gitarowych, death metalowych growli, akustycznych wstawek, śladowych ilości symfonicznego black metalu, a nade wszystko różnych etnicznych fragmentów, a te wywodzą się z tradycji indiańskich szamanów (specyficzne zaśpiewy), używania sampli przeróżnych dziwnych instrumentów (od sitaru po piszczałki) i bogatego, rytmicznego tła instrumentów perkusyjnych. Same utwory są dość rozbudowane i oscylują między siedmioma a dziesięcioma minutami z okładem i charakteryzują się sporym rozmachem aranżacyjno-brzmieniowym. Jako że nazwa TENOCHTITLAN wiąże się ze stolicą państwa Azteków na terenie obecnego Meksyku, tak też muzycy odnoszą się mocno do brzmień z Ameryki Środkowej i Południowej i nie są to na siłę robione ozdobniki, a stanowiące istotny element, integralne części utworów stworzonych przez tych dwóch muzyków. Jeszcze więc raz użyję określenia ‘dark metal’, gdyż jest kwintesencją tego albumu, choć nie do końca odkrywa to, co jest na nim do odkrycia. Inna rzecz, że odnoszę wrażenie, iż TENOCHTITLAN nie wyciągnął jeszcze wszystkich atutów, co w sumie dobrze rokuje na przyszłość.

I’m sure all around the world know this Russian band (TENOCHTITLAN was even released in Mexico and distributed wordwide). So here is the time to see what they brought for us with the fresh album. Here are 6 tracks, intro + 5 songs. Musically here is the same atmospheric doom metal, but not typical doom metal, but based on Aztec, Maya and Inca civilizations history; as well as filled with some folk elements. As for me personally, I have two feelings listening to this band. First – it’s really interesting listen to doom metal inspired by ancient civilizations, feel all those really interesting and catching melodies and thoughts. But from the other hand – for me personally again – this sounds a bit boring… I do not know why, but I have listened to this album just 2 times and I can’t listen this anymore… But as a whole, TENOCHTITLAN is pretty talented band, musicians were able create such deep ancient atmosphere and just well-structured music. So I think this far not bad album. Try this if you want listen to some ancient tunes mixed with doom metal.

Folkish metal has an exotic subgenre, called pre-Hispanic („before the Spanish conquest”) or native (American) metal. At first some pagan and black metal bands from Latin America started to build the folk music of their ancestors in metal and the local folklore in their lyrics, and later prehispanic doom, death, power metal bands have been born and then pure prehispanic folk metal groups have also appeared. Tenochtitlan, as their name – after the capital of the Aztec Empire – shows, also hails the native Latin American civilizations building folkish ethnic elements in doom/dark metal. The unusual stuff about them is that they’re a Russian project with Russian lyrics (although in Russia exists a Vedic/Hindu death metal band, with pure Russian members, too, Kartikeya).

By the way, Tenochtitlan isn’t so young; they’re active from 2004 but they exist rather as a virtual project, because the members live far from each other, they have no gigs, they only release albums. The last one, their fourth full-length album was unleashed in mid-summer of 2012, entitled Сотворение Мира (Sotvorenie Mira – “Creation of the World”) via the local extreme metal label, BadMoodMan Music.

“Creation of the World” lasts 46 minutes containing an intro and five long epic songs, but for me it’s one of those albums where 8-10-minute-long tracks don’t become boring. But it is partly because it can’t absorb my attention, this material is kind of background music for me. Every song is in Russian, the lyrics are all about the Aztec, Mayan and Inca mythology and history. The project has four members together with the composer but one of the members, Eresh (clean vocals and ethnic woodwinds) didn’t participate in the recording of this material. This is why the folk instrument tunes are played by synths and samples, sometimes it sounds worse than it supposed to be, but it’s not a serious problem. The CD gives floating, slower tracks with typical doom and sometimes dark metal riffs and solos, more kinds of growls and clean vocals, atmospheric keyboard themes and many native woodwind melodies and tribal drumming. Musically we can call Сокол и Змей (Sokol i Zmey – “The Falcon and the Serpent”) a summing or “resume” song because it contains every element in its 11 minutes which are used by the band.

As last words I can sum up that the album isn’t bad, musically and in its own genre it’s absolutely okay and it’s interesting, that Russians hail the Mesoamerican native tribes, but there’s nothing extraordinary in the tracks. None of them sticks in the memory and they neither attract attention. It’s perfect as background music, the track-lengths aren’t forced and I guess metalheads who like doom metal more than me will find more entertainment in the album. So I feel free to recommend this material to the friends of Native American cultures and doom metal!

Siguiendo con el desfile de novedades por parte de BadMoodMan, llega a mis oídos este "Sotvorenie Mira", cuarto disco de estudio de los rusos Tenochtitlan. Nuevamente el disco ha sido editado íntegramente en cirílico, algo que viene a ser muy habitual últimamente en los grupos de allí, lo cual hace creer que la campaña de promoción fuera de sus fronteras resulta realmente peculiar. Así pues la traducción del título vendría a ser "Creation Of Earth" (‘Creación de la tierra’ por si hay algún perdido).

Cabe decir que Tenochtitlan opera íntegramente de forma virtual, pues todos sus miembros se encuentran repartidos por la vasta demografía rusa, siendo el núcleo, por decirlo de algún modo, Lefthander, encargado de las guturales y parte de las guitarras, y Senmuth, más de lo anterior y responsable de la programación. Ambos acumulan muchos años en la escena extrema, con sendos proyectos como "Sea of Desperation", destacando especialmente a Senmuth, quién acumula una discografía surrealista a sus espaldas, habiendo publicado ya tres álbumes en lo poco que llevamos de este año.

Tal y como deja entrever cada ápice gráfico de este "Sotvorenie Mira", la definición rápida de los rusos pasa evidentemente por un Doom Metal en este caso más añejo, con un apartado melódicos bastante colorido, colando algún solo bastante decente, pero el verdadero atractivo de este disco, así como su peculiaridad, reside en el fondo, y especialmente en la gran presencia de instrumentos de viento, característicos de las tierras aztecas, mayas y demás, que pueblan su sonido global, todo ello enlazado con un teclado bastante más actual, creando un peculiar cruce al sonar el piano en medio de flautas e incluso bongos, en el caso de una épica "Falcon And The Serpent".

Cabe destacar cortes más oscuros, en el caso de "Nual", cuyo ritmo resulta muy contundente, pese a que el hecho de que la batería sea programada, les acabe pasando factura; incluso con un extraño regusto "folk", en comparación con una primera mitad, bastante similar en cuanto a ritmo se refiere, poniendo como gran pega a este "Sotvorenie Mira" la voz limpia, excesivamente forzada y dramática hasta abochornar. Sin embargo su equivalente masculino es uno de los puntos fuertes del disco, una voz poderosa e inspirada.

Destacar, nuevamente un muy buen criterio a la hora de diseñar el libreto, desgraciadamente inteligible, pues Tenochtitlan han apostado por su idioma natal en todos los aspectos. En líneas generales, es evidente que los rusos siguen empeñados en seguir creando nuevos sub-géneros del Doom Metal, en algunos casos, como el que aquí expongo, con cierto criterio, pues su peculiar homenaje a las culturas pre-colombinas resulta realmente homogéneo, pese a la extrema programación a la que ha sido expuesto, aunque posiblemente la mono-temática acabe resultando precisamente eso; monótona.

I Tenochtitlan sono un gruppo russo composto da musicisti che vivono a distanza ma sempre all'interno della stessa nazione, finora hanno pubblicato quattro dischi, l'ultimo dei quali è "Creation Of Earth" e trattano tematiche relative alle popolazioni del Centro-Sud America. Non a caso il loro nome è stato preso dall'antica capitale del regno azteco.
Descrivono il loro modo di approcciarsi al doom come atmosferico e tribale, in effetti il sound da riprova di tale affermazione, il loro album è infatti orientato a ricreare un'ambientazione ancestrale, dispersa nelle ere ormai trascorse, e l'uso di vari strumenti folkloristici ("sintetizzati" e non) in parte vi riesce.
La magagna vera e propria sta nella meccanizzazione industriale della batteria programmata che alle volte è tutt'altro che piacevole da sentire, difatti uccide quanto il riffing melodico, arioso, ma allo stesso tempo carico di sensazioni che conducono a ricordi solenni obliati, è capace d'infondere alle tracce. Il medesimo discorso si può attuare per le sezioni dalla ritmica tribale, purtroppo i suoni utilizzati sono quello che sono e ne pagano le conseguenze.
Non posso certo asserire che questi musicisti abbiano dato vita a un capolavoro, eppure "Creation Of Earth" gode di un più che discreto operato delle tastiere, possiede una prestazione vocale tutto sommato apprezzabile nel suo alternare growl/scream e canto in clean, anche nelle fasi corali, del riffing ho già scritto in maniera positiva e allora?
Tirando le somme, i sei pezzi contenuti nel platter si riducono a un piacevole passatempo, il ritual/misticismo confezionato dai Tenochtitlan viene gambizzato, per non dire esorcizzato, da quella carenza ahimè limitante e un viaggio a ritroso di quasi sette secoli diviene paragonabile a una più comoda visita all'interno di un museo: bella per carità ma deludente rispetto alle premesse.
Piccola nota sui testi: la loro lettura è stata una scommessa dato che i russi cantano in lingua madre e non esiste una versione inglese, mi sono così affidato (ma non fidato!) a Google Translator e ciò è stato sufficiente per trovare un paio di riferimenti a Tlaltecuhtli, il mostro marino che secondo le leggende dovrebbe popolare l'oceano dopo il quarto grande diluvio, e altri sulla storia del Montezuma che fece grande l'Impero Atzeco ma sul funerale di quest'ultimo proprio nulla, a quanto pare i sacerdoti spagnoli erano più che altro intenti a cercare l'oro che a pensare all'anima di quest'uomo.
Interessanti, dalle buone potenzialità ma ancora in fase di accentramento, chi volesse provare a cimentarsi nell'ascolto dei Tenochtitlan qualcosa di piacevole lo riscontrerebbe, speriamo che in un futuro prossimo siano più accorti e considerino con maggiore attenzione il peso delle scelte intraprese, per ora oltre il diversivo non si va.

Nos dias de hoje nesse mundo globalizado, tornou-se um tanto comum bandas de um país de origem que cantam coisas de uma outra cultura. Talvez a mais conhecida foi o Grave Digger com a indefectível Rebellion, e com o doom metal não está sendo diferente.

Chegando ao quarto material, esses russos cantam em sua língua nativa e tem em suas letras todo o misticismo das civilizações antigas dos Maias, Astecas e dos Incas.

Após uma introdução que parece que nos transportam aos tempos remotos, fazendo um clima perfeito para a faixa de abertura, Nachalo.

Guitarras pesadas, instrumentos de percussão, sons das flautas e vocais guturais são encontrados aqui. Alguns cantos ritualísticos também são encontrados facilmente o que acaba por cativar o ouvinte, principalmente a nós os sulamericanos.
O que deixou um pouco a desejar foi o som da bateria programada que ficou com um som um pouco artificial, faltando o “peso” da bateria acústica, mas não dá para menosprezar o trampo que eles tiveram para compor as linhas dessa bateria.

Outros detaques vão para a bela Sokol I Zmej, que ao fechar os olhos, o ouvinte parece ser transportado e ter formulado em sua cabeça uma cena qualquer daquela civilização. A atmosférica Pohorony Montesumy, tem seu início tocado de forma que nos lembram aqueles músicos peruanos/bolivianos que ficam em frente as lojas de departamento, só que de uma forma mais climática e “doomzisticamente” falando.

Para que não conhece o som, fica a dica que lhe renderá uma hora de cultura e boa música.

Нет ничего лучше, чем накануне наступления пресловутого апокалипсиса, предначертанного индейцами Майя, слушать проект Tenochtitlan и альбом о сотворении мира, посвященный по задуманной традиции - культуре древних народов Месоамерики. Разумеется, релиз отличается глубокой мифологической концепцией, равно как и другие проекты этих музыкантов, если кто не знает – Lefthander и Senmuth, которые в очередной раз покорили меня своими пронзительными «кричащими» текстами и чарующим звучанием дарк-этники. Полностью отключившись от внешних дел и проблем, и внедрившись в «Сотворение мира», удалось мысленно побывать на территории великой цивилизации древних народов и раствориться в созданной Tenochtitlan волшебной атмосфере. А прекрасно сконструированный буклет с русскоязычной лирикой позволяет еще глубже проваливаться в хроники «Сотворение мира», что только добавляет резкости и большей эмоциональной фокусировки. Хочется поблагодарить дуэт за подаренные великолепные ощущения и прикосновение дыхания мифов и легенд.
Шесть экстравагантных композиций позволяют нарисовать образ жизни и преданий древних народов в нашем воображении. Сотворение мира обретает причудливые яркие формы и, благодаря своей насыщенности получает воплощение очень близкое к реальности. Загадочные истории, покрытые тысячелетней пылью, пронзают снова и снова.
Вокал варьируется от рычащего до чистого, к которому было сложно привыкнуть - сначала чистый войс мне показался стопроцентно лишним здесь, однако, потом пришлось понять насколько он был важен и необходим на этом диске. Что касается гроула, то он, безусловно, придавал всему альбому общую зловещую атмосферу, уводящую далеко за собой по лабиринтам мексиканского фольклора. В итоге, встреча интересов разворачивается в полномасштабную картину, уже, наверное, принадлежащую к антиквару.
Мне бы не хотелось загонять насильно в жанровые рамки, так как здесь замешено многое, особенно полноценна структура инструментов в этническом плане. Экзотика, как мы знаем, ценилась во все времена и это однозначно беспроигрышный вариант в сфере творчества. Tenochtitlan всегда отличались своим уникальным преобразованием мыслей и идей в полноценную музыкальную форму с оригинальной подачей, а главное – грамотным, увлекательным и доступным подходом к слушателю. Such an interesting release this is... I was surprised to find myself captured by Tenochtitlan's music from the first sounds of this album until the very end, to discover such a powerful and attractive combination between Russian language and Aztec / Indian ethnic elements. If nowadays we have a genre called World Music, Tenochtitlan's music could be labelled as Ancient World Music... At its core, their music is Doom Death Metal, but when spiced up with so many elements from different cultures their Doom Death Metal becomes exquisite, and the best part is that as a whole the album sounds curdled and very mature, faultless. I love this album, it's exactly what I was looking for, a music that I haven't heard before, but also a music that will keep my interest high for almost an hour. Besides the Russian written booklet/lyrics I have nothing to object here, I loved every part of it and will continue playing it again and again. A band that I hope will develop this multi-cultural investigation on following albums also.
