Checkt einfach mal Track 5 ("Похороны Монтесумы") an und ihr wisst was ich meine.

In a world that is always more competitive, where supply is overabundant, the small producer has to find new niche markets, develop new and innovative services. Targeting a specific audience by marketing new engaging concepts should help your business not only to stay afloat, but to grow!!

It seems that capitalist mantra has managed to find its way through the most underground layers of popular culture. See Ahab and their 'Nautical Funeral Doom', see Ea and their 'lost civilisation-forgotten language' sticker, see Nile and their 'Egyptian' Death Metal, see Sleestak using the TV series "Land of the Lost" as a strong vehicle for nostalgia (nostalgia sells), see the wave of all the modern-proto Rock Doom bands – also known as the Vest Metal Scene: they have been smart enough to summon all the cheapest 70's occult gimmicks and create a real hype. You have to be different. Do your own, never-heard-before stuff. Ideas over talent. Ideas are talent some would reply… well…no, too easy.

Okay, all that precedes is of course meant to be slightly ironic. A tongue-in-cheek introduction to what I still perceive as a 'smart oddity': Tenochtitlan isn't a Mexican band as you might have been tempted to guess, they're Russian but all their musical themes are based on a kind of antique Mexican folklore – the one you can only picture in fantasy, as it sounds more Hollywoodian than Pre-Columbian, to be honest. The framework is Death Doom: growls, crushing guitars, an overall ominous atmosphere. The setting is somewhat familiar but it it only serves as fundament for a whole different building: it is an Aztec city that the band organizes; complex, vast, powerful, threatening, towering high over the wild surrounding landscape.

To achieve that evocative picture, the band makes use of various exotic instruments that, I must say, are unheard-of in the Doom genre, and I don't think they've been much used elsewhere either. Now, you'll rightly want to know what those instruments are. I have to tell the truth: the booklet is in Russian, I don't read Russian; I didn't find any useful info on that subject, I even tried to type the words printed in the booklet using a cyrillic alphabet in the hope I could have them translated by some software, but it seems the characters weren't all available! In that situation, I won't venture to guess; I can definitely say there's flute, a lot of it, maybe Pan flute? Of course, the band largely rests on the keyboard to set the 'Pre-Columbian' background moods. That concept has an immediate effect on their personal vision of Doom: it sounds very 'totalitarian'. In the same manner as you imagine the Aztec, Inca or whatever local civilisation, it releases a savage energy, a feeling of 'supremacy' hardly tempered by mournful weeping guitar leads and gentle folky lines. The intro of 'Похороны Монтесумы' for example is very cinematic, somewhere between Gibson's Apocalypto, Milius' Conan the Barbarian, Herzog's Aguirre (Tenochtitlan's effective use of instrumentals makes me think of Popol Vuh, for that matter), it takes you to actually SEE that archaic world right before your eyes. Choirs, gong, tom-tom, epic soaring keyboard chords, and that overall somber pride that underlies the album from beginning to end.

The vocal work is often conceived as a duet: a harsh barking growl and a weird semi-chanting clean male voice where the two singers' lines intertwine for a strange mesmerizing effect. The growls are often used as a brutal counterpoint to the exotic music like on 'Цветок Иш-Чель', where furious blasting Metal passages are brutally interrupted by gently bouncing folky instrumentals.

The album has its flaws: it can be too repetitive and some moments, like the majority of 'Сокол и Змей', recycle the same patterns over and over again. But on the whole, this is an enjoyable trip with enough exciting rhythm ideas to recommend it as an original work, an interesting diversion from the usual Death Doom album. Its soul might be a bit artificial, but at the end of the day, when you don't feel bored after the fourth spin, it means there's some quality in it. Check it out for yourself.

A découvrir!

This is a Russian group who play in the majority doom death material. But rather than being totally one dimensional, they mix it up with ambient pieces of music added for effect and it a good way to differentiate them from the many other doom death bands out there. The attempt is valiant but not a perfect combination when Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride mixes hand in hand with Johnny Violent on acid or something like that. The tracks are sung in their native tongue which is always going to limit your market, and the delivery whilst pleasant, often loses the listener in quieter moments of atmosphere. With such a mix you miss the little intricate passages of music designed in for effect. This is not party music people, although I can hear a genuine level of seriousness to the bands delivery, especially on ‘Nual’ which is very much in keeping with their lyrical tradition.

I endure the release and there is some interesting stuff occurring, especially the use of wind instruments. This happily takes prescience above the normal formula usually taken by artists and that usual weapon of choice is the keyboard. This album is not without its limitations though, a couple of the songs outstay their welcome, they are a little too long and don’t have enough energy to keep even the most enduring person in the world marginally going with a strong pulse. However, listen intently to this album and you will gain a sense of surprise and relief through the mind bending variation of themes used under the sub-genre of doom death, but it is not an album for the purists and I think this is where my allegiance slightly falters on ‘Sotvorenie Mira’. Thinking more about the album, maybe I am being a little too generous in my rating, but I have to commend the band for using a variation of instruments within their art form.

(he-he!) A lemez leghosszabb, 10 perc fölötti játékidővel rendelkező szerzeményét tartom a legkiemelkedőbbnek.

If there is one thing this album demonstrates, is that metal is truly international. When I saw the description of this band and its music, I was intrigued to say the least; Russian Aztec-influenced ethno-doom-death! Even that description fails to do justice to the music that this unusual band play, however, I will attempt to describe it in more detail!

It is true; Tenochtitlan are indeed fixated and obsessed with the ancient, mysterious cultures of the tribes of South America, the Aztecs, the Mayans, and the Incas et al. The album title translates into English as “Creation of Earth”, as with previous releases, some of the song titles are in Russian, and some are in one or other of the tribal languages. Incredibly, this is the band’s fourth full length album dealing with such topics as `Montezuma’s Funeral’, `The Falcon and The Serpent’ (which I assume is about the legendary founding of the city Tenochtitlan) and so on. So, what does ethno-doom sound like?

Well, for start, this is epic with a capital E. Having no preconceptions of what this band’s sound would be, I was interested to find a subtle, multi-layered approach to the music, once the instrumental at the start had completed (a pastiche of primitive, hypnotic drums, pan-pipes and sinister noises). There is a dramatic layer of keyboards which really adds a majestic touch to the enormous, expansive atmosphere, as well as all sorts of other touches; the occasional blast of a wind instrument, drifting, harmonised guitar leads, melancholy piano breaks, and a host of unusual sounds. Every song on the album is a vast, elaborate monolith, with layers of music which drift in and out hypnotically. The pace is always kept slow to mid-paced to ensure maximum heaviness; it is like being buffeted by enormous icebergs on theArctic Ocean. A lot of the guitar work is fairly minimal, in that there are not great swathes of riffs roaring out of the speakers at you. The guitars are used either to add heaviness to the music passages with heavy power chords following the tune, or drifting, dream-like solo sections, some of which are extremely reminiscent of Pink Floyd (to my ears at least).

There is also a detectable industrial element here; some of the drum programming really reminds me of bands like Skinny Puppy, and also some of the percussion sounds are distinctly and deliberately artificial sounding (as far as I can tell). There are also a lot of unusual, harsh electronic noises peppered throughout the album which adds a strange `ancient versus modern’ vibe to the music. Vocals are also varied; there is a deep, aggressive death growl, a throaty, impassioned roar, and even some harmonised singing. All in all, the creativity of this band is staggering. It doesn’t always hit the mark exactly; I found my attention wandering in places to be honest. However, this said, when Tenochtitlan’s music comes together, it is vastly epic, heavy, atmospheric and quite unlike anything I have heard before.
