Depresivní black metal z Ukrajiny v sobě skrývá něco zajímavého, temného, ponurého a také někdy až příliš přímočarého.

Płyta „Ghosts In The Shells” niezbyt przykuwa uwagę i w tym sensie w ogóle nie wprowadza w trans.

"Ghosts In The Shells", pubblicato quest'anno dalla Bad Mood Man Music, succursale della Solitude, и l'album d'esordio di Darktrance.
E' stata realizzata in una deprimente monocromia grigia, e mostra una cittа in rovina. Nessuna speranza. Solo rassegnazione.
Formalmente, "Ghosts In The Shells" и un disco perfetto.

Nos itt mindenért Deimos (alias Dmitry Gubsky) a felelős és a Ghosts in the Shells az első kiadvány, amit kapásból piacra is dobott tavaly nyáron a BadMoodMan Music.

He say Dark Metal, me say Black Metal. Who's right? Who cares? Suffice to say DARKTRANCE has crafted an opus with more atmosphere than you can shake a stick at (not that you could see it anyway.)

Essentially “Ghosts In The Shells” is a tug of war between rabid yet sombre Black Metal and brooding Dark Metal, both heaving equal weight and achieving an imperfect balance as there is still a see-sawing between the concussive and the contrived. Moods bagatelle around this bleakscape, shattering emotions and battering light into the distance so that only brief needles of positivity pierce the murk before being banished by shrouds of gloom. Take a sledgehammer to any of these tracks and the result will be a fall of soot, the devil-riding Black Metal sections belch out fuliginous clouds whilst the more cerebral Dark parts bring about a softly falling grey snow.

These compositions cumulatively sap the will, the tones draw warmth and energy, even when a sprightly plucked melody perks up during “Black Sun” it merely acts to mock, emphasising the melancholy surrounding it. There is movement rippling through this album, sometimes conspiratorial, sometimes a surge of affrontedness, the dynamic varying between a stalking menace and banked furnace intensity, it all convinces in its corruptive intent. The guitar manages to leave a smoking trail throughout the album, it has a cloying texture, a mix of ash and blood, even when a lead motif seeks to soar on “Human's Devilry” it is tainted and dragged back into the grey rush.

Whatever dark themes make up the lyrical substance of “Ghosts In The Shells,” portent drips from the tongue of the gargoyle. The vocals are suitably harsh, the mainstay being a croaked snarl that tears itself from the throat of this single entity and that evokes something unsavoury circling within a pit of filth. These songs are desolate without being empty, the atmosphere is thick to the point of smog during the likes of “Delusional Dreaming” and clarity is not a descriptive to be found anywhere here, despite the strength of the deliberately opaque production. Whilst austerity precipitates like some dour shower, it sometimes serves to wash the detritus away to reveal sinewed roots of sterner stuff, a black blaze sparks with orange embers throughout “Rain Of Sorrow,” besting the grim deluge that falls upon it.

There is no doubt that DARKTRANCE has constructed a work that brims with bitterness and fury, it does so without shrinking into the introspective self-loathings of some of the denizens of all things depressive, the inner strength ensuring this is as bold as it is cold. If the album title has piqued your interest, rest assured that the listening will bear its own reward.

Ghosts In The Shells – a cím kísértetiesen emlékeztet az s- betűk híján teljesen azonos című japán anime filmre, mely nálunk is kiadásra került DVD-n.

ENGLISH VERSION:

Lately I’ve discovered a couple of bands from Ukraine, the next one in the row is the one-man project Darktrance, which describes itself as dark metal with black and experimental elements. The band was formed by Dmitry Gubsky in the beginning of 2007, to express how rotten and lost the human race has became by now. Let’s see how much he succeed in that.

Ghosts In The Shells – the title, without the „s” letters, really reminds me of a Japanese anime movie with exactly the same title, which also got released in Hungary on DVD. Perhaps this movie inspired him or then maybe not, well at least for the album cover because we can see a destroyed city just like a city in the anime which was not yet destroyed but already on its way to that. But I can see other paralells between these two creations, mostly related to the atmosphere and the lyrics. Whether he was inspired by these themes or not, we must say that it’s a unique album no matter what. The vocals is an almost-standard screaming but sicker than that still, so not too cliché. This sick atmosphere rules the whole album, through all the 9 songs and personally I wouldn’t pick single songs, but if I had to, then I’d pick Between Two Worlds (see Abbath’s I-project with similar album title) where you can hear strange voices and noises, and the title song itself which is in my opinion, the sickest song of the album. Song titles such as Black Sun, Humans’ Devilry, Prison Inside Us etc., speak for themselves: they tell Dmitry’s opinion about our modern, sick world, from where’s no escape for the human race. There’s no problem with the sound and all, the quality is enjoyable and all the instruments sound correct.

All instruments, recordings and lyrics are the work of Dmitry, he has all my respect as he’s definietly not had an easy job with that. I think there’s a good future for the band in sight, I can realy recommend the album to those who enjoy such an atmosphere and themes that makes them think, but only when they’re in the perfect mood!

Black Metal from the Ukraine. This full length debute album displays a mix of depressive and ambient black metal. This one man creation called Darktrance will suck you into it's realm of gloom and doom with "Ghosts In The Shells" creating a haunted atmosphere bringing in a reminissencent feeling of good old Norwegian black metal but minus the religious drama (from what I can tell). Powerful sound with a great use of eletronics here but it is the chilling gnarling screetch of the the vocals that will either make or break this album."Ghosts In The Shells" is one of those albums you either will love or hate. There is not inbetween with this one. As for myself I am one who loves it and can appreciate where it is coming from. I would recommend you checking this out and I gladly drop this a rating of 4/5.

As a part of the trilogy of Solitude Productions albums that were sent my way (see also Ekklesiast and Raventale), Darktrance from the Ukraine is represented with their debut album, “Ghosts In Shells”.

Despite being signed to a label that primarily dedicates itself to Doom Metal, Dartktrance doesn’t strictly fall into the same category as the other bands on BadMoodMan Music. Musically the band is better compared to Black Metal bands, although the sense of atmosphere would probably make the band best described as kindred to Forgotten Tomb and Deinonychus. Seeing that not all that many bands have successfully blended Black Metal and Doom Metal with the same quality as Forgotten Tomb, one can only be impressed by Darktrance’s effort. The essence of Black Metal remains, but the delicate union with slower breaks, Doom-tuning and thick layers of atmosphere by the keyboards make the music break out of the confines of the genre to aforementioned cross-breed. The quality of the music is consistently high, and probably more impressively, the songs have a distinct character, making the album both good and varied. Personal favorites include ´ Delusional Dreaming´ and ´God Of Time´, but all the songs make it clear that Darktrance have released an impressive debut album in “Ghosts In Shells”, and are a band to keep track of for the future!
