El actual trio moscovita que antaño empezaba a dar sus primeros pasos, en forma de una prometedora banda de metal atmosférico con guiños al Doom, claro ejemplo de ello fue su primera demo ‘Breath of Deceased’, en la cuál un tal Dmitry "Letarg" Tolokonnikov tiraba el solo del carro, definitivamente ha pasado a mejor vida. Letargy Dream continuaron todavía, aunque ya en sentido descendente, por esa senda durante sus dos anteriores obras hasta la fecha. Sin embargo fue ya en el último compacto de los rusos, titulado sencillamente ‘2’, donde la transición hacia un despropósito del calibre de los ingleses Anathema, aunque con menos clase y ahora explicare el porqué, se ha acabado consumando y el resultado final se traduce en este tercer e incomprensible ‘Heliopolis’, cortesía una vez mas, aunque esta vez inexplicablemente, de BadMoodMan music.

Como ya nos tienen acostumbrados, Letargy Dream han decidido, una vez más, apostar por editar el disco en su lengua materna de forma íntegra, un hecho sobre el cuál he de admitir que tengo sentimientos bastante cruzados, ya que pese a que por una parte, me parece genial que los rusos quieran defender sus raíces, como tantas veces han hecho varios grupos, y obviamente me refiero a Alemania, creo que si tu idea es de que el disco tenga cierta repercusión a nivel internacional, no debería darse el caso, aquí presente, en el que los títulos sean incomprensibles sin tirar de diccionario, o peor, que echando un vistazo al libreto y particularmente a las letras, lo único que se entienda sean los enlaces promocionales. A lo mejor se trata de una novedosa estrategia de marketing.

Una vez dicho esto, y centrándome ya en el apartado estrictamente musical, ‘Heliopolis’ es sin lugar a dudas el disco más personal de la trayectoria de los moscovitas. Personal, extraño, incomprensible...muchos son los adjetivos para definirlo, empezando por el hecho de que tan solo y pese a que los temas pasan ampliamente de los diez minutos, sean cuatro, aunque visto lo visto, casi que mejor. A día de hoy, si tuviese que etiquetar de algún modo a Letargy Dream, me decantaría por una especie de rock progresivo muy plano y bastante difícil de coger por algún lado, y más de primeras. Los temas se basan sobretodo en una estructura de riffs muy repetitivos, ocasionalmente oxigenados con algún que otro acorde de rock ochentero, moviéndose en frecuentes cambios de ritmo realmente insípidos, ya que la única sensación que consiguen transmitir es la de una monotonía absoluta, e indiferencia de un tema a otro, salvando los muebles con breves pinceladas atmosféricas, que en ocasiones se transmiten en débiles señales de cierto pasado Doom que ya se esfumó, como es el caso del tema homónimo.

De la sección rítmica podría destacar el gran protagonismo que tiene el bajo aunque todo lo contrario se podría decir de una batería muy pero que muy discreta. Breve guiño a un apartado vocal, que salvo algún broche corrosivo, especialmente en la inicial "Saturn", muestra poca variedad, siendo una especie de coro a dos voces, ya de por si arropado por un ambiente denso y asfixiante.

De lo más "destacable", por decirlo de alguna manera, se encuentra el cierre con "Prominence", ya que vendría a ser lo mas cercano que encontremos a la palabra "variado". Aquí las guitarras se muestran más aceleradas, aunque ello no quita que acaben despotricando agónicamente cuando se les presente la ocasión, mientras que la parte final deja entrever un mayor protagonismo de unas ambientaciones bastante limitadas durante el transcurso de ‘Heliopolis’, aun así muy sencillas y frecuentemente cutres. Si a eso le añadimos un sonido bastante precario, cebándose sobretodo con una percusión que acaba sonando como si estuviese en un garaje, más un diseño visual correcto aunque como ya cito anteriormente, poco efectivo, el resultado es un disco decepcionante, poco convincente y una propuesta demasiado centrada en el lema de “toda idea es bienvenida”.

Dudo mucho de la repercusión de este disco aun así, ‘Heliopolis’ no acaba sonando como un disco de Noise y pese a todo han conseguido que mayormente consiga sonar uniforme. Pero ello no quita mi decepción hacia una banda que prometía y mucho.

Russian, melancholic, cosmic-themed, progressive, metallic, introspective, epic, ambient, blasting, Pink Panther, chamber, classical... oh, hell. Even if we tried to describe Geliopolis bit by bit, you'd still be none the wiser. But trust us, you haven't heard a band like Letargy Dream yet. And you should hear them.

Progressive rock bands usually don't have vocalists switching between mellow and growl or blastbeat intrusions, metal bands usually simply don't play like this. Not even the most progressive ones, but what is "progressive" actually? Another band staying within the limits of what Dream Theater or Opeth achieved? Well, Geliopolis is better than anything you've heard from Opeth recently. And yet, it sounds like no band in particular.

Letargy Dream are well aware of everything that can be used to make music, but they are not limited by where they usually hear it. Like the aforementioned blastbeats -- it's more like "hey, such a thing exists, so let's use it in a song" -- and the song is nowhere near the stuff where you usually hear blastbeats. But the song doesn't care as it is fluid, steady, persuasive, and above all, a thing that requires concentration. And it's not even the delicate kind of concentration, just general attention, as, once a couple of minutes have passed and you are inside Geliopolis, you can just relax and go wherever it takes you. The easy parts are still distinctive, the hard parts still sound natural, not resembling a product of someone abusing years of study to make pretentious. Instead, they come off as someone using years of passion to make inspired music. Letargy Dream are genuinely progressive, and they are genuine musicians. Count in a ton of Russian personality (and Russian language) and the end result can only be one of a kind.

From Moscow (Russian Federation) comes Letargy Dream. Initially planned as one-man band Letargy Dream is now known as a quintet that has not only changed its line-up/formation, but also the genre. The band has developed own style of melodic and progressive metal, shifting away from slow and depressive melodic metal into more experimental and progressive direction.

Their latest material is a third offering is called Heliopolis, containing not only the above mentioned influences but also those of psychedelic, stoner, doom and black/death metal. In other words; these four songs presented here are quite diverse, yet boring as it runs over 50 minutes?! Quite a challenge for the most listeners, I think.

Heliopolis is conceptually based on anti-utopian literature of 20th century. It gives a new look at Letargy Dream. Lyrically it is all in their native Russian, leaving no space for us non-Russian speaking folks to understand, but I guess music is a universal language. The male vocals are clean while to times they get supplemented by some desperate female screams. The guitar sound is solid and distorted, supported by technical drum passages and again occasional blast bits. Atmospheric keyboards add an extra dimension to their overall sound, creating this special atmosphere of desolation, fear and confusion.

On the less positive note I would say that Heliopolis is not the best structured album and an album without coherency. It seems like they loose themselves in this wide range of possibilities and various musical directions.

Therefore, the best thing I can say about this unit is their obvious passion to the progressive and melodic metal music that will undoubtedly affect further releases of this band and their colleagues from Russia. This is maybe an interesting release for fans of dark metal in general or progressive doom/death.

Третья работа московской команды Letargy Dream "Гелиополис" представляет собой экстрим прогрессив метал, в котором весьма гармонично соединились влияния дум метала и мелодик деза со всеми из этого вытекающими. Но всё же, именно прогрессив рок-метал составляет большую часть музыкальной составляющей данного альбома. Стоит похвалить музыкантов за достаточно высокий уровень владения инструментами, идеальное качество записи, умение создать специфическую думовую атмосферу. Да и размеры композиций явно прогового характера - 3 из 4 песен выходят за 10 минут своего звучания. Поклонники прогрессива будут приятно удивлены этой работой.

This is a project of three members from the Russian Technical Death Metal band Beheaded Zombie, but their music with Letargy Dream has nothing to do with the one they play with Beheaded Zombie, and that's great, it makes sense this way.
"Heliopolis" is a 4 tracks release lasting for 50 minutes, so you can easily guess how long the tracks are. I think when releasing it BadMoodMan Music only thought of the Russian speaking buyers as the booklet is all in Russian, I have no idea what the lyrics are all about. The progressive touch in their music is brought by the continuous breaks and rhythm changes, the band passes easily from melancholic parts to Extreme Metal aggressive ones. I could say this is a very interesting musical venture, but although overall it is full of catchy stuff and displays a large variety of rhythms, sometimes you can get carried away and think of other things while listening. This happened to me a few times on the album when I found myself dreaming on other things and not listening to the music. Anyway, not your typical Doom Metal release, I could recommend it even if only for this.
