A tre anni dal debut “Fragile Monuments” i serbi Tales of Dark... danno alle stampe il secondo album dal titolo “Perdition Calls”, un lavoro che è una summa di quanto fatto dalle produzioni doom/gothic metal negli anni 90, in particolare per le sue referenze alla scuola inglese, My Dying Bride su tutti.

Prescindendo da questo vizio di fondo, che elude forme di forte originalità, l’album riesce ad esprimere in maniera ottima, quella fosca interiorità che fa da sostrato al genere in esame.

Le nove tracce presenti si fanno strada attraverso il gioco di vocals creato da Arpad Takač e da Jovana Karajanov, che alternano senza fatica growl ed eteree inflessioni dal feeling sognante. Per ciò che concerne il punto di vista strumentale in senso stretto, la band serba, non aggiunge e non toglie nulla a quanto detto in passato dai diversi esponenti di spicco del genere. Ed è qui che l’album mostra il proprio tallone di Achille, ovvero nel suo essere un semiplagio delle produzioni che 10/15 anni fa hanno tracciato nuovi confini per il doom/gothic metal.

Nonostante il punto debole di base di cui soffre, “Fragile Monuments” non è assolutamente un lavoro da condannare, perché ben suonato ed altrettanto ben prodotto e se non vi fosse un passato di cui tener conto, questo album, potrebbe davvero essere considerato un piccolo ed oscuro gioiello, ma fatto sta, che la storicità del genere è evocata dalla stessa band traccia dopo traccia e questo incide fortemente sul giudizio globale.

Un lavoro che evidenzia buone doti esecutive, ma anche scarsa personalità. Unicamente per i die-hard del goth/doom.

What do we have here? Heavy riffing, yes. Melodic guitars, yes. Heavy bass, yes. Steadfast drumming, yes. Solemn keyboards, yes. Deep growling vocals, yes. Clean male vocals, yes. Clean female vocals, yes. Tales of Dark... started in 2001 and is a Serbian band, that ahs gone through quite a few members over the years, they have also managed to release one demo and two full-length albums, this being their most recent release. I think you can gather from reading the opening part of this review what type of music "Perdition Calls" contains. Dark and heavy, slow and melodic Doom/Death Metal with a clear My Dying Bride and Anathema influence. Maybe not my favourite genre, a bit to melodic and dramatic for my taste and that's why I do not know that much about bands in this genre, so I can not really rank Tales of Dark..., and I can not compare them to their peers. But listing to them, they have a couple of interesting moments and I am only guessing now but I think that people into this type of music would appreciate "Perdition Calls".

Mede dankzij labels als Bad Mood Man, een sublabel van Solitude Productions, wordt steeds duidelijker dat er in voormalige Oostbloklanden erg goed gemusiceerd wordt. Neem nou Tales Of Dark uit Servië dat met dit tweede album een erg lekkere pot doom/death neerzetten.

Okay, het is erg duidelijk dat My Dying Bride het grote voorbeeld van deze band is, maar dat neemt niet weg dat de muziek erg goed in elkaar zit en de productie ook ruim voldoende is. Het feit dat de band gebruikt maakt van zowel een zanger als een zangeres betekent gelukkig niet dat we met de zoveelste gothic metal act te maken hebben. Tales Of Dark speelt gewoon erg goede doom/death en daarmee is “Perdition Calls” een album om te checken.

Meg lennék lepve, ha a Doomos zenékben jártasabb emberek közül valaki ne említené meg a MY DYING BRIDE nevét a TALES OF DARK… kapcsán. Elcsépelt szlogennel azt is mondhatnám, ők a szerb MY DYING BRIDE (bár bizonyos tagok nevei alapján van némi honi kötődés is a bandában). A helyzet azért ennél jobb, tehát nem feltétlenül rossz dolog ez, bár tény, hogy számomra több helyen erősen visszaköszönt a brit zenekar munkássága. De nézzük meg közelebbről, mivel is van dolgunk.
63 percben összesen 9 dalt halhatunk, ami már jelzi, hogy itt ugye nem 3 perces szerzeményekről van szó. Lassú, hömpölygő, keserű dallamfüzérek viszik a lemezt hátukon az elmúlás felé. A változatosságra törekedvén pedig néhol szép akusztikus kiállások is fellelhetőek, tehát a stílus kötelezőnek mondható jegyei az album építőkövei kétségtelenül. Az erős, kitűnő megszólalás mindenképpen jót tesz ennek a fajta zenének, nem is lehet ebben szinte semmire panasz. Arányos a keverés, minden hangszer szépen hallatszik, és egy egységes, meleg, organikus produkció kerekedik ki belőle. Természetesen a szintetizátor sem hiányzik, ám jelenléte nem igazán hivalkodó, inkább csak egy plusz színezetet ad a lemezhez. Takács Árpád énekes dallamos vokálja eléggé Aaronéra emlékeztet, néhol pedig hörgéssel operál. Tudom, a dallamos énekhangon nem igazán egyszerű változtatni, de így nekem kissé a szükségesénél jobban idézi a zene a MY DYING BRIDE-ot. Továbbá a dalszövegek is érezhetően sokat köszönhetnek a brit dalnokoknak. A női ének használata egy üdítőbb ötlet talán, bár ez sem ismeretlen a stílusban. Mindezek ellenére a lemez egésze kellemes hallgatnivaló, jók a dalok, érzékkel vannak megírva (sőt, a negyedikként elhangzó, tényleg kitűnő Unassembled még akár egy afféle Doom slágernek is beillik, már amennyiben beszélhetünk ilyenről ezen stílusban), és a kivitelezés (hangzás, borító, artwork) is professzionális.
Ha nem ismerném a MY DYING BRIDE-ot, a pontszámom simán lenne egy nyolcas, így viszont (mivel nem tudok szemet hunyni a néholi túlzott hasonlóság miatt) most ez egy erősebb 7-es.

ENGLISH VERSION:
I’d be surprised if people familiar with Doom music did not mention the name of MY DYING BRIDE regarding TALES OF DARK… With an overused slogan, I could also say that they are the Serbian MY DYING BRIDE (though according to the names of certain band names they have some ties with Hungary too). The situation, however, is better than that, so it’s not actually a bad thing though to me the activity of the English band can be felt at several points. But let’s have a closer look what we have here.
We get 9 songs in 63 minutes so that’s also indicating there aren’t 3-minute-long shorties here. Slow, flowing, bitter melody-strings carry the record on their back toward passing away. Trying for variety, there are also nice acoustic breaks so we have the so-called compulsory marks of the genre obviously. The strong, excellent production does surely god to this kind of music, there’s nothing about it we can have problems with. The mixing is well-proportioned, every instrument is well-audible and we get a uniform, warm and organic production. Of course the synth is not missing either but its presence is not ostentatious at all, it’s just giving an extra colour to the record. The clean vocals of Árpád Takács rather remind me of Aaron, but sometimes he uses growls. I know it’s not really easy to change one’s clean vocals but this way it the music is much more reminiscent of MY DYING BRIDE than needed. Moreover, I can also feel the influence of the English bards on the lyrics. The use of female vocals is maybe a better idea though it’s also not a new thing in the genre. Despite all this, the record is enjoyable, the songs are good and composed well (moreover, the fourth one, Unassembled is quite a hit-like song if we can speak about such a thing in this genre), and the design (sound, cover, artwork) is also professional.
Had I not known MY DYING BRIDE, it would have been 8, but (since I cannot dispense with the obvious similarities at times) it's now a stronger 7.
