New extraordinary work from a famous melancholic metal band from Moscow, The Morningside. As we were told by band members the idea of this release appeared quite a long time ago as the story behind “The Trees” song was longer than the song and now it has its final. TreeLogia was step by step gaining its present form and finally appeared as a tale. The listener could make a decision himself if this is a story of a man lost among the trees and permanently became one of them or a stort of man fleeing from something, perhaps, his past, who found the harmony or loneliness or… gone insane. Or is it a very different story? One of band member considers The Trees Part Three as a chronologic beginning of the story, not a final. The second album title “The Album As It Is Not” also has some idea behind it as there is actually only one song at the album, despite of its diversity. Thus, The Morningside are ready to present their first CD-single which lasts for more that 50 minutes! The CD is issued as a limited digipack including an inlay with band photo, individual copy number, and original signatures of band members.

Помните дебютный альбом “The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past” этой замечательной московской группы? Так вот, музыканты решили, что одна композиция с упомянутого выше дебютника под названием “The Trees” не совсем закончена и требует продолжения. И это продолжение в итоге вылилось аж на 43 минуты! По сути, на диске всего одна песня, но разбитая на 3 части, соответственно и треков тут тоже 3. С одной стороны - это вроде как сингл, с другой же стороны - материал вполне тянет на полноформатный релиз. Впрочем, не важно как его будут называть, главное ведь то, что релиз получился не банальным, а как всегда необычайно интересным, да и можно ли ожидать от THE MORNINGSIDE плохих релизов? Уж эти музыканты знают, как выражать свои мысли и эмоции при помощи инструментов. Диск издан в виде красивого Digipack'a лимитированным тиражом (всего 1000 штук), который содержит также вручную пронумерованный флаер с фотографией группы и автографами музыкантов. Ну и по уже сложившейся традиции, сам диск издан с золотым напылением и с применением pit-art.

Pure Nothing Worship

"TreeLogia – The Album As It Is Not" is the EP of this Moscow band. For those that don’t know, The Morningside plays melancholic doom/rock with traces of Katatonia’s "Brave Murder Day", only with a much more melodic approach in the style of Agalloch. "TreeLogia" is comprised of three songs.The first is re-recorded version of the song "Trees" from their debout album. It’s difficult to decide which version sounds better, as they both have their own charm and special melancholy. "The Trees Part Two" is a 13 minute song which is closes to Agalloch with it’s atmosphere. The melodic arrangements are quite similar to the mentioned band but that is just a plus, as no one managed to get close to the atmosphere that Agalloch creates. "The Trees Part Three - TreeLogia" lasts a bit more than 21 minutes and is made from three parts: "Return", "Burned", and "Going Away". The song is very nostalgic and has a post-rock feeling as the atmosphere folds out as the minutes pass. An excellent composition for an autumn walk through a park covered with fallen leaves. Actually, the whole EP has that atmosphere. Consume this work at dusk, while walking on fallen leaves.

When I first heard The Morningside (their debut album “The Wind, the Trees and the Shadows of the Past” in 2007), I thought there was nothing better in the Russian lands... However with time the music of this band lost the charm it had in the beginning. Nowadays I have a few new personal favourites - for example Comatose Vigil or Откровения Дождя - and if we compare the latest works of these bands (not taking into account their different subgenres), The Morningside would rank somewhere near the bottom. This mini disc is interesting and satisfactory, however, for a band that can play much better, it sounds too stale. There is a lack of drive, dynamics or even elementary heaviness in Melodic Death/Doom Metal here. It seems that the band began to copy themselves. Three tracks are long enough and bloated with repetitive themes so much that they begin to get boring. Every track could be made 2-3 times shorter and nothing much would be lost. And they could have won quite a lot - concentrating more on the music, more diverse and not such boring compositions. Nice, but too much toying with needless ideas. Since their debut release The Morningside went lower and lower. It’s about high time to change the path, preserve their own standards and set musical priorities better.

Москвичи в попытке расширения слушательской аудитории пошли на поводу у порока, спонсируя психически неустойчивых личностей и различных фетишистов, схватив за горло одну, конкретную тему с первого альбома и углубив, развив, расширив ее, практически натянув на горизонт, дабы фито-, гербо– и прочие древофилы могли наслаждаться своим пристрастием в большом варианте, длиной с хороший альбом – 47 минут – собственно их же первая работа короче.

Озаглавив, ставшую из одной сразу тремя песнями "The Trees" EP, хорошо поиграв словами не родного, английского языка и изыскав "Древологию" (по-русски тоже отлично звучит!), группа продолжила свой творческий путь как нельзя более логично. Практически никаких изменений в музыкальном плане кардинально, зато по насыщенности и наполнению всех трех песен явный прогресс, насколько это возможно при весьма хорошем исходном качестве. Нам представлен вылепленный еще на прошлом диске меняющийся от минуты к минуте гибрид doom, gothic, melodic death и частички black начинки. С каждым релизом баланс склоняется не в сторону облегчения, как часто бывает, но в сторону одухотворения, эмоционального артистизма, а уж что для этого потребуется – блековый скрим или synth-pop подложка (которых тут конечно нет, это я образно...) – совершенно отдельное, другое дело. И этот мини-альбом звучит мягче и проникновенней, и при этом не легче. Зато параллели с Katatonia остаются где-то позади, хотя доминировали на дебюте.

В своем опусе о втором диске группы было отмечено о некоем разделении на группы инструментов, так вот – перезаписанная "The Trees" с самого начала демонстрирует редукцию этого элемента, вероятно приобретавшегося в процессе сведения. Теперь все инструменты звучат единым потоком музыки, а точней мелодии: постоянная, текучая, плавно переливающаяся из одной темы в другую, сопровождающая риффы и полностью самостоятельная, вьющаяся бесконечной змеей под ногами она повсюду. В этой, первой вещи, удлиненной, кажется, за счет великолепного вступления, она словно целиком лишь начало, композиция, что готовит нас к развитию и кульминации, томительная, вправду, ожидающая продолжения (как музыканты и сделали). А следующие, намного четче, чем прежде, выражающие структурность осмысленность, дисциплинируют и соло гитару, ныне, если не запоминающуюся, то не уплывающую нечетким касанием прочь после первого, второго и любого другого прослушивания. Все изыски, коими нас она радует, трогают за душу, жмут на сердце и погружают в атмосферу, постепенно нагнетая, вплоть до конца. Именно этого не хватало релизом ранее, опоры. Вторая композиция перехватывает суть так легко и непринужденно, что пробуждение наступает уже в районе конца первой трети, где вновь взвивается новыми перестановками акустическая интерлюдия первой вещи, переходящая в самозабвенный соляк по мотивам. Постепенно в композиции обретается настойчивость вместо выжидающей томности, вплоть до наращивания динамики до нового уровня. Последняя вещь вполне возможно немного затянута (зато нашли место приложения клавишных в большом объеме), но так как и вас затягивает в прослушивание, это практически незаметно навскидку, если абстрагироваться от семплов ветра и дождя на второй части Древологии, по идее необходимых в самом конце ее.

Мини-альбом идеально вписался в тот формат, которым он был заявлен. В рамках такой длительности, такого его концептуального восприятия со слегка видоизмененными установки мелодизма это лучший релиз группы, нашедшей много, чего не хватало в первых двух работах. Насколько это будет работать в иных условиях подачи материала – имею в виду третий альбом – не понятно, но данный диск задержался в центре на длительное время по некоторым обстоятельствам, за что ему можно быть только благодарным: множество душевных минут проведено за его прослушиванием.

The Morningside atto terzo. Dopo due full-length accolti positivamente dalla critica, il gruppo russo dà alle stampe questo maxi-EP di tre tracce per quasi 50 minuti di musica. A livello di lunghezza dei brani, i nostri qui sembrano proprio volere fare il verso agli Opeth dei tempi d’oro, ma il paragone finisce lì, perchè basta poco per rendersi conto che tutto sommato il materiale sia ancora una volta ispirato a maestri del doom-death come primi Katatonia, My Dying Bride e Novembre. Su “Treelogia” i nostri danno vita a lunghe suite in cui prendono le mosse da sonorità prettamente anni ’90, allungandole e, in un certo senso, “complicandole” con l’aggiunta di grandi parentesi strumentali, che a volte si profumano di post rock. Il risultato questa volta è un lavoro decisamente pacato, tutto giocato su cambi di marcia molto graduali, in un insieme complessivamente arioso e carezzevole. Del resto, anche quando il cantante/chitarrista Igor Nikitin sfodera il suo screaming, la musica si guarda bene dal divenire arrembante, prediligendo invece inflessioni intimiste, su cui le chitarre hanno vita facile nell’allestire intrecci passionali, che in più di una circostanza strizzano l’occhio allo stile di Andrew Craighan della Sposa Morente. Rispetto a “Moving Crosscurrent Of Time” affiora dunque una maggiore rilassatezza… un senso di abbandono che i The Morningside riescono nuovamente a gestire con sobrietà e misura, senza scadere in arie troppo ampollose, che li porterebbero pericolosamente vicini a certe scellerate gothic metal band dei giorni nostri. Certo, rispetto a determinati riferimenti, i ragazzi continuano a mancare di quel guizzo di personalità che li porterebbe su un livello superiore, ma la perizia messa in mostra, abbinata a una giusta attitudine, compensano più che degnamente l’eventuale impressione di “già sentito”.

Soll keiner sagen, Melancholiker hätten keinen Sinn für Humor: Wenn ein Album drei Stücke enthält, die allesamt nach Bäumen benannt sind (‚The Trees Part One’ bis ‚The Trees Part Three’), muss das Album beinahe zwangsläufig ‚Treelogie’ heißen. Das war es dann aber auch mit Originalität. THE MORNINGSIDE, vor etwa zwei Jahren mit „Moving Crosscurrent Of Time“ schon nicht durch besonderen Esprit aufgefallen, machen auch jetzt recht hausbackene Musik. Keine schlechte, zumal das Moskauer Quartett eine Art Exotenbonus für sich beanspruchen kann. Doch was vor allen Dingen aus Finnland über Karelien bis ins russische Kernland an Doom-Einflüssen herüber wandert, wird der Tiefe der russischen Seele einfach nicht gerecht. Geboten werden drei Stücke mit einer Gesamtlänge von 47 Minuten. Dabei wird auf stilechte Einrahmung großer Wert gelegt: das Sample eines knisternden Feuers im dritten und mit über 20 Minuten längsten Teil, das Rauschen starken Regens, unterlegt mit Donner, im Opener, dazu auf Streicher getrimmte Synthesizer. Das hört sich nicht schlecht an und wird eins ums andere Mal ergänzt durch extrem eingängige Leadgitarren. Doch für mehr als guten Durchschnitt reicht es schon aufgrund der trotz der Song-Längen recht ausgewalzt klingenden Song-Strukturen nicht. Da fehlen die Überraschungsmomente, es ist, als kratze „TreeLogia“ über die gesamte Spielzeit nur an der Oberfläche. Den Russen zugute halten lässt sich immerhin, dass sie ihrem Stil treu geblieben sind; und eine ganze Ecke tighter klingen als auf dem Vorgänger. Fehlt nur noch das gewisse Etwas.

The Morningside is a mature four-piece band from Russian capital city of Moscow. The band has recently released its new EP named TreeLogia: The Album As It Is Not. It contains only three tracks and is a limited edition with only 1000 copies. To start with, this release seemed very approachable and simple, and judging from the song titles “The Trees Part One”, “The Tress Part Two” and “The Trees Part Three – Treelogia” it is very simple and cliché. However, the songs are much more complex and obviously very lengthy. TreeLogia has probably a longer playing time than most of full-length albums, and it offers a lot of variation within each of the tracks.

The Morningside loves and nurtures lengthy intros and outros. It helps creating the atmosphere which is again supported by synth-laden interludes. Their melodies add an extra dimension to their overall melancholic and desolate vibe. The band somehow manages to keep its originality flowing throughout the remainder of the record.

TreeLogia: The Album As It Is Not is not the most essential Black/Doom release out there, but it is a worthy effort that will appeal for true lovers of the genre and those into; Agalloch, Katatonia, Burzum and similar Black/Doom acts.

Mit ihrer aktuellen EP schlagen die russischen Death/Doomer THE MORNINGSIDE einen Bogen zurück zu ihrem 2007 erschienenen Debüt “THE WIND, THE TREES AND THE SHADOWS OF THE PAST” und dem auf dieser Platte enthaltenen Stück “The Trees”. Die Thematik dieses Titels nun erneut aufgreifend, finden sich auf der als Konzeptwerk strukturierten Veröffentlichung “TREELOGIA – THE ALBUM AS IT IS NOT” neben einer neu aufgenommenen und knapp drei Minuten längeren Version dieses Songs zwei weitere – die Idee hinter “The Trees” weiter spinnende – Kompositionen.

Die düstere Arbeit eines Synthesizers eröffnet “TREELOGIA” mit einer sphärischen Klangkulisse, die lange verweilt, schließlich jedoch weicht, um den einsetzenden Gitarren und ihren schweren Melodiebögen die Vorherrschaft über die Songgestaltung zu überlassen, die von nun an das dominierende Element der Platte bleiben sollen. Die zähe und simple aufgebaute Rhythmusbasis wird nahezu durchgehende von dieser melodischen Komponente der Saitenfraktion überlagert. Wenngleich es THE MORNINGSIDE gelingt auf diesem Wege einige reizvolle Momente in die Stücke einzuarbeiten, fällt die Instrumentalleistung insgesamt doch eher unausgereift aus. Der Großteil der dargebotenen Melodielinien plätschert wenig markant und unscheinbar vor sich hin, statt wirklich faszinieren oder fesseln zu können. Über weite Strecken erweisen sich die Arrangements der drei enthaltenen Stücke als schlicht und ergreifend zu eintönig und gleichförmig, als dass das volle Interesse des Hörers geweckt werden könnte.

Trotz aller Kritik darf “TREELOGIA” nicht als Totalausfall bezeichnet werden und eine immerhin solide Grundarbeit kann dem Quartett nicht gänzlich aberkannt werden. Jedoch lassen THE MORNINGSIDE an zu vielen Ecken den dringend nötigen Feinschliff vermissen und scheinen sich der stetig wachsenden Monotonie ihres Liedgutes nicht im Ansatz bewusst zu sein.

Die von THE MORNINGSIDE verfolgte Taktik der beständig agierenden Leadgitarre über einer schleppenden und in den Hintergrund verlegten Rhythmusfraktion kann auf “TREELOGIA – THE ALBUM AS IT IS NOT” nur in einigen Einzelfällen kleine Erfolge erzielen. So bleiben letztendlich neben diesen wenigen Lichtblicken lediglich eine sauber Produktion sowie eine gute handwerkliche Umsetzung der Stücke.

Why is this considered an EP since it's totaling more than The Morningside's previous two albums, the first album is about 40 minutes long and the second 46, but this is almost 48 minutes long... I don't get it, but still think it's because it is composed of only 3 tracks, very long tracks, of course, and maybe because the tracks are based on a tracks, "The Trees", from their debut album. Anyway, most part of this album is instrumental, calm, atmospheric and doomy Metal recommended only to those of you already familiarized with The Morningside's music, and maybe Metal would be a too strong label for this music. Although not setting up any new boundaries in this genre, The Morningside present us a good, relaxing CD supported by an excellent production, so if you're into this kind of music you should definitely check out this EP.
