Take your time with this album and you might find Russia's Abstract Spirit couldn't have chosen a more fitting name. It's the additives and what escapes between each trawling note which initially entice and encourage further listens through the long reach and macabre tread of this piece of funeral doom.

Abstract Spirit aren't exactly making a bold new statement for the genre but what makes their sound particularly distinctive is the strange effects that are ably swirled around within the mix. But a bold statement is something which can be a difficult thing to make when it comes to this slow style of riff accumulation. Once the listener has listened, the lethargic pace of guitars either produces something substantial and retentive in the long run or they don't. Fortunately for this band they do.

Where used the melodies sound sick. Not the "woah, awesome man" kind of sick but the "you look like you need to lie down" kind of sick. They sound unnatural and fetid as they rise and swell in the "Prism Of Muteness" or "Leaden Dysthymia." Even a few surprising momentary shreds spice up the likes of "Prism Of Muteness" with its strangely solemn vocal choir placed in a swirling atmosphere.

The rather ghoulish feminine vocal presence in the title track lumbers in an occult incantation, at first something secondary before moving hauntingly closer to the fore.

Ground down beneath the oppressive growls of the Russian titled "За Сонмом Цветных Сновидений " you'll find the best representation of the band's unusual inclinations; a shimmering effect is often layered beneath the guitars to raise them up and the use of what sounds like a trombone, which is also used elsewhere, gives it a truly irregular bend.

Most punishing is the album's consistent tempo; it's unrelenting and fixed. Each of the tracks are mostly constructed in a similar drumming pattern and make up a burgeoning body of distorted guitar work. Tracks like "Leaden Dysthymia", with a more concise insistency, add slight variance with a militaristic beat as it draws nearer the end; a marching of the bizarre spirits moving irregularly to the trombone in a predetermined direction.

Theomorphic Defectiveness is like a horror film stuck in slow motion, each riff being the kicking open of a coffin and letting loose all manner of hellish souls.

Pure Nothing Worship

"Theomorphic Defectiveness" is the fourth full-length of this funerary gathering from Russia, whose members are known by their work in other projects. This band exists since 2006 and for a relatively short time, they released four great albums. And this album is not different than the ones before in the aspect of music arrangements and genre. In more than an hour of material this quartet offers the same as on the previous albums - honest atmospheric funeral doom with almost unnoticeable additions from other genres. The news on this album is the cover of the legendary Skepticism. It's the song "March October" from their last album "Alloy". It can be said that the song is does not offer nothing new, it's just a little heavier than the original. Is that good or bad, you be the judge. They never cared about progression, they just slowly and surely march their own funeral path towards the eternal nothingness and uncompromised darkness.

A defective divine form sounds like the stuff of nightmares as would have been receiving a batch of discs from Solitude Productions which did not include at least one Russian funeral doom band. Luckily amidst the treasures that they sent, this was the one that I immediately felt drawn to and its stygian depths have brought gloom and doom in ways that deserve to be truly treasured. Putting this on you have to be aware that the light is going to go out for the next 64 minutes as the six tracks including a Skepticism cover unfold and drown you in their depths.

I am not sure why this sort of music feels like drowning and the vibe of treading watery depths comes to mind when I play it but that is exactly what I get as the title track slowly yet melodiously takes hold. Memories of Evoken are very much evoked here musically and you find yourself drifting off before being somewhat surprised as the rough and craggy deep growls of singer A.K. inject an angry ferocity into things. Once these calm down the music gets languid before a real surprise is delivered in the form of a dour brass passage suddenly invading. It is like a circus of clowns all shedding tears and it really catches you out making you wonder if you have gone insane and really heard it. Although the brass never takes such drastic centre stage again it is there within the music at times throughout the album, making me think of this lot as a funeral doom version of Sear Bliss. It certainly adds a uniqueness to a familiar style as do some elongated Godfleshian guitar pitches and a sorrowful tinge of strings in the underlying parts. A lot is cloaked in darkness under the layers, listen carefully and you will be rewarded with the siren cry of a female choral from deep below the surface too. Naturally this is all on just the first epic number. Reverting to Russian language for lyrics and title on second number does no harm as the wretched and contempt fuelled vocals convey the same message in any language. Keyboard passages and effects again play a central part the contribution of I Stellarghost really makes the music bristle with atmospheric horror and with the guitars making flurrying noises it is as though something with many tentacles is rising to the surface. It will be greeted with devotion as some harmonic clean vocals now are added giving things yet another dimension. Considering the music is really repetitive there is so much happening but you do have to work to find it and that is what has made listening to this with almost religious conviction so rewarding.

By the time an instrumental with skewed harmonics adds ‘Leaden Dysthymia’ the passage of time has passed to an extent that when vocals do finally return (ironically) on ‘Prism Of Muteness’ you had almost forgotten of their existence. The tempo has upped a bit now with some beastly growls but clean vocals and austere sounding organ brings back the worshipful feel. It’s impossible not to think of old gods returning to reclaim what was theirs and reading the lyrics just adds to this but it is a place where from destruction blooms great new wonders.

This is one of the best albums I have heard of its ilk in some time and it does not surprise me to read that Abstract Spirit are regarded as one of the best Russian funeral doom bands. This should certainly have consolidated that position and if they were not how would they even dare to finish the album off with a Skepticism cover, as for which ‘March October’ sounds glorious. With three albums prior to this I shall certainly be looking at tracking down the previous work of Abstract Spirit and no doubt playing this one till I get tired of it or until the sun goes out which is the more likely option.

O moskevské pohřebáky ABSTRACT SPIRIT jsem zavadil před pár lety a to přímo o lahůdkovou desku „Tragedy and Weeds“.

Omílání melodií má hypnotickou sílu, která vás bez mrknutí mrtvého oka vtáhne do svých temných chapadel a následně si s vámi bude hrát neveselou hru. AS nejsou progresivními tahouny stylu, jako třeba Esoteric, ale to vůbec nevadí. Poctivost, upřímná věrnost a v první řadě um muzikantů doslova kape z každého tónu. Pánové si s náladou alba pohrávají, kytary se jakoby ani nerozeznějí, aby vás vzápětí rozcupovaly brutálním řezáním pásové pily do vašich končetin.

Minden fény kihunyt, nincsenek lámpák, mécsesek, se gyertyák, a gyermekek szeméből is eltűnt a láng, mely a szebb jövő reményével kecsegtette a mindennapoktól beszürkült őseiket.

Látod a címet? Tervszerű a dalban a lassú dobok mellé beszúrt, többször visszatérő gyorsabb gitárjáték, akárcsak a gitár fájdalmas síratása. A hangok úsznak a masszában, a testrészek úsznak a masszában, te is úszol a masszában. A dal végén ismét felgyorsul a gitár, remeg, didereg, sokkot kap, amihez a beúszó kórus sem tud feloldozást adni.
Harmadik fejezet: Leaden Dysthymia
Negyedik fejezet: Prism of Muteness
A létezés időnként hangosan kacag rajtunk, miközben kivet magából.
Ötödik fejezet: Under Narcoleptic Delusions
A bűz eloszlása utáni végeláthatatlan üresség hatalmas riffel ordít miközben magába roskad, elnyelve a létezés emlékét is. Méltó dal a stílus nevéhez, igazi funeral doom „sláger” a zárás, becsukva maga mögött minden kaput, lezárva minden kiutat és végleg elveszve hagyva minket saját sötét világunk végtelen labirintusában.
