Another brilliant debut from a young Ukrainian band suiting tastes of fans of various doom metal substyles. Amily mix harmoniously doom death metal, gothic doom metal, and funeral doom metal adding a part of theirs souls into the music. «To All in Graves» is, first of all, melody framed with darkness, and sublime orchestral keyboards referring to neoclassical music. It is worth to mention that basing of the genre traditions the musicians created their own harmonic world which is ready to accept anyone who is able to open his heart and feel it.

Такова суть дебютника "To All In Graves" украинцев Amily, если вкратце.

"To All In Graves" - это готический роман без страниц, но он полон великолепного содержания. Solitude Prod.

Amily is a relatively new band from Ukraine. Their first album, 'To All in Graves', is more than appropriate for the label it was released from, Solitude Productions. Typically, the bands signed with Solitude Productions basically fit the same category: Doom Metal that is crushing and slow, but also conveys a heavy dose of atmosphere. Amily is no exception, their style would probably share the most characteristics with the gothic-tinged Death/Doom of Nox Aurea and Paradise Lost’s first two albums. However, while the band has clear references from other bands, Amily creates their own original blend of extreme Doom and symphonic Metal.

In the simplest of terms, 'To All in Graves' is a perfect cross between Death and Doom Metal, with loads of orchestral elements. Yet rather than sounding melancholic or romantic, this usage of symphonic instruments bring out a medieval kind of darkness in the band’s Doom/Death style, which already sounds sinister enough. "Renaissance"-style symphonies open each song, leading into huge riffs which range from speedy blasts of pure Death Metal, such as on 'Renaissance Day' and 'Winds of Culmination', to glacial funereal riffs on the opening and title tracks. The drums aren’t particularly technical, but they help the guitars sound all the more cavernous and huge. The vocals consist of deep growls which mostly linger in the background, beneath the loud and crushing guitar melodies. There is also some brief female and male singing on a few of the tracks, but their voices are only really used to enhance the darkly gothic atmosphere. This atmosphere is also created through the use of violin, pianos, and organs, the latter bringing to mind the works of Skepticism and Abstract Spirit.

Overall, the combination of dark and heavy Death/Doom mixed with symphonic elements may not exactly the most original idea, but Amily executes the sound pretty well. It could easily appeal to those who enjoy their Doom Metal to be really sinister and brooding, as well as those who enjoy the symphonic Doom of Estatic Fear and Virgin Black. What I especially enjoyed about this album is how the music never sounds outright gloomy or melancholic, and never loses its Death Metal aggression in the orchestral elements. Their sound is the kind of stuff you would hear from a band that creates excellent Death/Doom in their early years, then either changes their sound or breaks up. Hopefully, this won’t be the case for Amily, because it’s clear to me that they have the potential to successfully revive the original gothic sound that was once created by the Death/Doom bands of the early-90s.

As the album title suggests, there’s a strong doom metal element in this work. Whilst occasional comparison can be drawn with My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth and so forth, Ukrainian band Amily create a broader base of patterns and progressions as good doom bands should do to make a more interesting atmosphere.

From the beginning “To All in Graves” has a strong gothic and scary element. Discordant violins and the inexorable sound of a church organ convey images of ruin and grey, crumbling buildings. Continuing amid cheerless gloom, “Fading Image of My Own” takes us into hefty doom. This is interrupted by angelic operatic vocals but this chugging piece is about dead end roads and doleful crosses. A child-like voice comes in at the end, making us fearful for them as no child should be exposed to this bleak scene. After an orchestral beginning, “Renaissance Day” takes the doom to a mechanical level. The sinister spoken word and deathly growls then accompany the deep and penetrating “Daydreams of Peeled Wallflower”. The gothic chorus does nothing to dispel the grey and black imagery. The dark orchestra merely reinforces the depression. “Under The Black Voile” briefly plays with us in its disturbingly gothic way, prefacing the powerful and didactic “Winds of Culmination”. ”How dare you break the rules”, growls the vocalist to the mechanical rhythm of a punishment ship in full flow. The creepiness smacks strongly of Dark Fortress and Malsain. There’s a deathly majesty about “Winds of Culmination” which is suggestive of mental indoctrination. Gothic choirs and orchestral blasts paint black scenes. Then the deep voice returns for “Rejected Cells”. It’s faster than doom but again that mix of menace and orchestral foreboding dictate the hopeless scene. The pounding is relentless but brighter than your average doom. As relentless as it is, discordant chaos never seems far away. Spoken vocals can be heard. The piano is used for sinister effect. The track title “Forever Cold” sums up the classic piece of orchestral doom which follows. “A strange feeling shreds my flesh”, growls the vocalist. Quite. Isolation, loneliness and despair can all be found, especially on the title track, and are embellished by the sound of the gothic organ. The gothic choir, which I enjoyed very much, comes into play on “Funeral of Love”, the final track. The hammer finally comes down.

While enhancing the standard doom scenario with a gothic orchestra, choral passages and the overall ambiance, as the album progressed I started to find that the ingredients were recycled. The point had already been made. “To All In Graves” transcends mere ponderous doom and succeeds in creating a gothic atmosphere. Harsh and deep, this isn’t an album to be friends with. After impressively scary beginnings, I found that the album became a little predictable and uniform. Although I think the object was achieved and I liked a lot of it, by the end of “To All In Graves”, I wasn’t thirsting for more.

Forgotten Path

There are moments when thinking of making a sensible introduction to a review won’t pop-up no matter what, so one has to write something like this one instead of putting some generic presentation line. And quite often it is hardly avoidable when music keeps the listener a little bit indifferent towards it. So, here we have a Doom Metal band from Ukraine, which for some reason made me recall Sideris Noctem, which I’m quite familiar with (review of the album “Wait till the Time is R.I.P.” in “Forgotten Path #3”). Probably because at the beginning of “To All in Graves” it threatened to tread a similar path, but I was proven wrong. Unlike Sideris Noctem, Amily is quite stern. Medieval atmospheric gothic-like passages work really well with their austere deathly Doom Metal. Some of them even remind me of Void of Silence occasionally. Amily’s music isn’t extremely original (and the title pretty much suggests that). Like most typical dare I say “romantic” Doom Metal bands, they tend to sing the songs of loss and despair in growling fashion. However as I said, at times the atmosphere reaches a plausible climax and that leaves some chance of replaying it again. The production hints that the band probably did most of it by themselves. Out of tune guitars pop-up here and there a few times and cause some undesirable dissonance, but the whole mix does not interfere with the listening experience.
Given that this is the debut album of Amily, it has pretty much succeeded in delivering some good substance. Time will tell where these guys will head further, but for now they laid more or less a decent pavement under their feet.

Astral Sleep, My Dying Bride, Mourning Beloveth

To All In Graves definitivamente não é o álbum mais original doom metal, mas consegue captar e evocar algumas emoções. Esp. recomendado para os fãs de Comatose Vigil, Paradise Lost, Shape of Despair, My Dying Bride, Saturnus e gigantes cena semelhante.

This band from Ukraine entice you with some real soul searching doom ridden sounds, the songs are epic in nature and whisk you off to a world of your own when you immerse your body into Amily’s soundscape, almost its own dreamscape. Rather than totally relying upon the obvious influences in doom, some inspiration comes from the black metal scene, a little folky, or rather a little more in depth and challenging. Some surprising kick drum blasting occurs during ‘Fading Image of My Own’ which is completely out of character for the album and song, but at least it breaks some of the gloom and monotony if you are really critical as some of these tracks do go on for quite a while, but it does not work when you are experiencing the siren singing and almost operatic vocal renditions. I like the subtle female vocals amongst the male guttural experience, but they appear very loud in the mix, that is my only criticism of this inclusion.

‘Daydreams of Peeled Wallflower’ is eerie, atmospheric, the use of keyboards strings and the like are appealing in building your mind for the ensuring assault when the spoken words end and the guitars kick in, but it could have been earlier. If you like your epic doom, even if you like bands like Alcest, then you are in good company here. There is a clever balance of atmosphere from the keyboards/synths that eventually triggers a battalion of aggression from the vocal growls whilst the guitar work makes you want to hold your head back a stare into the night sky.

Whilst this is a nice release, it is a release that requires your full attention, you need to sit down and immerse yourself in this, not in the car, not on the train, but quietly and preferably in a secluded location and that is when you can really enjoy this album as it is more of a personal experience and not one to be shared.
