Яркий пример, композиция “Destiny’s End”, “Release from Reveries”, “Step to Eternity”, совсем другое дело.

This is an album of rather conventional Doom/Death by a Russian band re-recording one of their early works with a better studio. Ordinarily I like Doom/Death pretty well, but I find this rather boring. Listening to any one song and you think it's not bad, but seventy-four minutes of it is too much, and after a while my attention wandered and made it hard to really focus on the album. For Doom/Death in the general vein of bands like Morgion this is okay, but it has nothing really good about it to make it stand out from the crowd. It's heavy, and it has some good melodies, but there just isn't much to say about it: it's not awful, it's not great, it's meh.

A Christian melodic doom death metal band from Russia that sings only in Russian? Yes, Ekklesiast you are in all likelihood the first band of this very particular style I have ever heard. Apparently the fourteen song seventy-five minute marathon of When the Dead Boughs Will Awake From the Dreams (something lost in translation perhaps?) is a rerecording and reinterpretation of the album by the same name from 2001 and the band's demo Touch of Snowstorm from 1998: I say apparently because everything on the CD is in Russian and this is the information I got from Metal Archives.

Seldom does a genre tag work as well as a summation of the music as it does with Ekklesiast. When I say this is melodic doom death metal, that's exactly what it is. The UK's doom death Big Three are all well-represented, especially My Dying Bride: lots of slow to mid tempo melancholic hymns heavy on the atmosphere and light on the death. Where Ekklesiast comes up short is in their guitar work; rarely during the seventy-five minute duration do I ever hear a riff that I need or want to hear again. One song passes into the next and if it weren't for the changing track number on the CD player I probably wouldn't know that I was listening to a new song. Some of the melodic moments do stick out, but not for the right reasons; they're not all that memorable, but I can recognize where they are cribbed from. Because at least these guys are smart enough and just good enough to take their melodic cues from bands like Iron Maiden, Angel Witch and Diamond Head instead of aping the ever popular Gothenburg sound. All those melodies do is make me wish they would crank the tempo up a little higher and gallop through a couple of NWOBHM romps, but they never do; the entire album just trudges endlessly along. Thankfully the band doesn't rely that much on the quiet, “introspective” passages that weigh down so much modern doom: this never devolves into the limp-wristed histrionics of Isole or Daylight Dies. But it also fails to ever reach the headbanging deathpower of Sumerian Cry, The Angel and the Dark River, or Gothic. There is just too little of the things I like: heavy doom and growling death; and too much of the things I don't like: mock solemnity and “lite” doom.

And I would like to know when and seventy-five minutes became an acceptable length for an album. Sure a CD's seventy-nine minute running time is a tempting feast, but gluttony of Ekklesiast's severity is unnecessary: this bloated corpse is near to bursting. Giving listeners a good deal is one thing, but this album suffers incredibly from diminishing returns. After the first five songs that sound alike, do we, the listeners, really need nine more that sound exactly like the first five (especially when the first five aren't that good)? Maybe if I understood spoken or written Russian my opinion might be different, but When the Dead Boughs Will Awake… is boring. Not boring in a bad, gotta-turn-it-off way, but boring in a background music, oh-it's-still-playing way and I have no use for boring metal.

Despite what might seem an appraisal to the contrary, Ekklesiast do what they do well (boring melodic doom death), but the result is so non-descript and instantly forgettable that I'm left wondering if what they do needs to be done at all. This isn't trendy or overtly modern in any really noticeable way, and they are paying obvious homage to many classic and near classic bands and albums. But Ekklesiast never gives me a reason to listen to When the Dead Boughs Will Awake… instead of digging out my old Paradise Lost or Anathema records.

Ekklesiast heißt die Combo, „When the Dead Boughs Will Awake from the Dreams” das Album.

Ekklesiast haben mit „When the Dead Boughs Will Awake from the Dreams” ein vielschichtiges Werk voller Langsamkeit, Melancholie und Dramatik abgeliefert.

Anspieltipps: Prophecy Of Doom, World's Autumn, Stars Of Your Sky

Fazit:

Solitude Productions if known for pushing the Russian doom Metal scene. One such product is that of Ekklesiast, whose unreleased demos "When The Dead Boughs Will Awake From The Dreams" and "Touch Of A Snowstorm" have been re-recorded.

The material on “...When The Dead Boughs Will Awake From The Dreams” compares the best to older Katatonia and inspired bands such as Rapture and Daylight Dies. Other bands that may come to mind are My Dying bride and Saturnus; Quite an impressive collection of bands if you ask me! Comparisons to especially the first batch of bands mean the music is very riff-driven and generally groovy; two features that make these sort of albums a treat to listen to. Despite being older songs, the material doesn’t sound outdated and the powerful productions fits well with the songs. You’d think that all’s great, but unfortunately that would be a bit too positive. Despite being a pleasant sort of listening music, 13 very similar tracks offer very little in terms of lasting power and individualism. Also, one can only conclude that the excellent catchiness and groove of Rapture and adventurous melodic brilliance of Daylight Dies are absent, leaving Ekklesiast somewhat in the middle ground. Again, that doesn’t mean that it’s a bad album, but the material is just too anonymous to stay interesting over a prolonged period of time.

A voi.

Mowa o płycie „When The Dead Boughs Will Awake From The Dreams” (tytuł przetłumaczony na angielski), którą zapełniają ponownie zarejestrowane w profesjonalnym studio nagrania z materiału o tym samym tytule, pochodzącego oryginalnie z roku 2001 oraz dodatkowo archiwalne utwory z zapomnianej demówki „Touch Of Snowstorm” (1998) oraz jeszcze jeden bonus. Na „When The Dead Boughs Will Awake From The Dreams” obecna jest też gitara akustyczna i - co ciekawe - tylko w ostatnim archiwalnym utworze klawisze. Zaś w innej, środkowej kompozycji chyba ktoś gościnnie użyczył naturalnego głosu, bo brzmi on inaczej niż zazwyczaj. Ogólnie nostalgiczny, klasyczny doom/dark metal wypełniający album „When The Dead Boughs Will Awake From The Dreams” jest skierowany do osób lubiących nastroje MOONSPELL, MY DYING BRIDE czy MOURNING BELOVETH.

Russian doom-metal label Solitude Prod. proudly presents its 3rd release - the album 'Cold', which is the latest work for this very moment of Russian doom-metal legend from Novgorod - Ekklesiast. 'Cold' tells us the fifty-minute story about life and death, about joy and sadness. This story was created with harmonious combination of melodic death-doom and marvelous lyrics. The lyrics of the band are considered as the most sincere and the most thoughtful on Russian doom-metal scene (and on the whole heavy music scene in Russia).

?Flame Of Desires?: ...After the time of grief comes the time of joy, and it finally has come. And the colours of ancient icons have all faded away, and the stern faces of Eternity appear. And coming down to rest in peace you'll just smile - because all that was has gone...

The music of Ekklesiast will get deep into your soul and the lyrics - deep into your heart.

A nyitószám a műfaj nagyjait idéző rövid akusztikus lezárással végződik. A következő Prophecy of Doom című számban a magas gitárhangok különösen élvezhetővé teszik a nyitányt. Ebben a dalban találhatunk akusztikus-beszélős betétet is, mely szintén jól áll a zenekarnak. A számok hosszúsága öt perc körül mozog, ami teljesen megfelelő adag ilyen zenéből. Remek, ám kicsit egysíkú résszel zárul a második szám.

A Countdown Point lassabb tempóval erősíti a hallgató doomba vetett hitét, jól megírt hangulatú gitárdallamokkal igyekszik beragadni a fejbe.

ENGLISH VERSION:

I never really heard any Russian bands before, and because of my aversion towards Russian language, wasn’t planning on doing such a thing, but when I saw the beatiful cover of the re-recorded album of Ekklesiast I decided to set aside my prejudices. Two other facts also encouraged me to listen to the album: that the band plays doom metal similar to that of My Dying Bride (with less clean vocals) and I like the British band pretty much and that the song titles were written in English on all the websites (however, this later proved to be a mistake). So I laid my hands with anticipation on this marvelously designed release. The graphical realisation perfectly conveys the depressive, lonely, grievous and fate-stricken mood of the music. Not even the band logo and the album title written in cyrill letters are disturbing. I would especially emphasize the visuals of the disc itself, which is simple, but very effective and suggestive. Most of the bands unfortunately do not pay enough attention to this – at least for me – very important issue. A very unpleasant surprise welcomed me in the booklet, since all the lyrics are printed in Russian and thus, are also sung in the same language. Objectively judging, this should not cause a problem, but for me – and I think I’m not the only one – this takes away from the enjoyability of the disc. Unfortunately, I don’t have the English translation of the lyrics, but I do have the titles translated and reflected by these are the usual themes of grief, pain, autumn, passing away, and generally the end.

Already during the first track – Grief of These Days – a grim mood enwraps the listener, thanks mostly to the organic, not-at-all-polished sound of the album. After a dynamic start comes a characteristic, doom-typical slowing and a sad, spoken part upon a hammering musical base. Though the Alexandr’s voice does not provide anything new, it is perfectly okay – both the tired rhetoric and the growls are nice. A great advantage of the band is that you won’t get bored during any of their tracks, they change their music with excellent timing. The opening track ends with an acoustic part, which reminds me of the greatest bands of the genre. In the next song – Prophecy of Doom – the high-pitched guitar tones make the beginning quite enjoyable. We can also find an acoustic/spoken insert in this song, which the band realises nicely. The length of the tracks is around five minutes, and that is a perfect dose at a time of such music. Many doom bands only think in 8-10 minute songs, which is not always a fortunate thing to do. I suppose Ekklesiast were aware that they’re better off without writing epics. The second song is closed with a fine, but somewhat monotonous part.

Countdown Point strengthens the listener’s faith in doom with slower tempo and tries to stick into his mind with its well-written guitar melodies. Maybe it’s just me, but due to Russian language, the lyrics are not quite easy to memorize which is a pity, because judging by their rhythm and melody I would gladly sing them along. There is no particular problem with the musicians, everybody does what he’s meant to and neither of them has any difficulties with this. The greatest problem with the disc is that we can find no trace of real personality, and without that this genre – along with many others – is a bit overloaded. Bits and pieces across the album – like the beginning of World’s Autumn – are too much similar to My Dying Bride and this does no good to the reputation of the band. The foruth song drowns holds no cause of interest already and considering the number of remaining tracks, this is a fact to be worried about.

Fortunately, the fifth song – Cover Me with Snow – brings a little excitement into the album through its fast tempo and unusually melodic voice, which make it one of the best piece of the Russian fellows – despite the very MDB-like title. Melodic vocals can be heard later in Dark Waters, too, but there the singer tries to produce melodies which are not suitable for him, so we get something terrible. Even though The City is an enjoyable song perfect to headbang to, it contains nothing worth mentioning besides its solo. That, however, is so well written, that it saves the song from total boredom. We can find little pieces of joy in the rest of the songs here and there – like the very nice saw-like part in Stars of Your Sky or the very atmospheric acoustic insert and closing in Step to Eternity – but this is not enough for salvation. Thus, I am led to the conclusion that mostly – if not only – those will enjoy this album, who can’t wait until the new My Dying Bride album comes out (which is not that far anyway).

I must say, that I am disappointed with Ekklesiast. After the beautiful promise of the cover it slowly became clear that apart of that, there’s not too much uniqueness or artisticness in this release. At first, I considered the language the biggest problem, but I realised that it is nothing compared to the total lack of personality. I can really only recommend this album to those who are eagerly counting the days until the release of the many times mentioned British band’s new disc entitled For Lies I Sire. Besides them, maybe the most determined doom-fanatics could enjoy …When the Dead Boughs will Awake from the Dreams. For the „general” metal-listener, this could only be background music – at best. The Russian guys have the knowledge, but they need to make a lot of progress in personality and I think it wouldn’t be a problem if they switched to English. I’m really sorry.
