Solitude Productions с гордостью представляет альбом легендарной норвежской группы, под названием «To Mourn Is A Virtue». Этот релиз – недостающее звено, между классическим альбомом группы «Tragedies» (1995 год) и «In Fields Of Pestilent Grief» (2002 год). «To Mourn Is A Virtue» может стать неожиданным открытием для поклонников группы и для тех, кто интересуется жанром.

Though Funeral is one of the most famous bands in the category of this genre in Norway, they still deserve a wave of quite critical evaluations and remarks for their last CD “To Mourn is a Virtue”. They are warranted because the last album is at the least lacklustre. Perhaps it isn’t totally poor but plenty of decisions which enforce me to doubt. First of all it is the quality of a record. I can guess it isn’t a rare occurrence nowadays; while searching for a sterile sound it just came out especially weak and untrue. You better not even expect the massiveness of guitars and mightiness. By the way for some hard to understand reasons Funeral use an incredibly big amount of orchestral music on the background and fall out of the context with keyboards/organs which are more characteristic to bands which play Progressive. It provides the CD with quite a weird, unexpected sound which doesn’t really take off.
Talking about the songs of the album - they are really very monotonic and hard to remember. Perhaps the best part of the CD is the clear vocals. Now I even doubted if I heard a little of growl or scream (there are some but really minimal)... But even those vocal places are quite boring and elaborate, in some places it sounds like something is wrong. Somewhere a high female vocal appears but it doesn’t damage the CD any further. In this case, in an overall context “To Mourn is a Virtue” reminds me of an early creation of Theatre of Tragedy but it isn’t a compliment. It is more like a comparison to define the stylistics. On the other hand this album has so many inconsistent and unsuitably selected things that it is really hard to compare it with others. The more it is not really worth it.

Возможно, что именно по этой простой причине диск под названием «To Mourn Is A Virtue» получился настоящим подарком как для поклонников группы, так и для почитателей funeral doom и doom-death метала в целом.

Solitude Productions.

Funeral Doom is an interesting genre, while it can be powerful and emotionally stirring, it can also be extremely boring. The music is meant to be slow, but should it really feel like its slow? The music should be engaging enough to make excite the listener.

One of the original bands to explore the genre is Norway’s aptly titled Funeral and they are one of those bands that know how to make this music exciting, and they do just that with their latest release “To Mourn is a Virtue.”

The album is actually a collection of unreleased demo-recordings, and it contains nine previously unreleased tracks recorded between 1996 and 2004, all of which were remastered in 2010. While the band has evolved into a more Death Metal influenced Doom band, this album documents their start in the Funeral/Classic Doom style.

The music here is a mix of acoustic passages, slow, glacial drumming, heavy riffing and dark, melancholic vocals and together it creates that atmosphere I crave from my music. For me, the mark of a great record is its power to affect me at an emotional level, its cathartic in that the darkness helps exercise my own demons and I actually come away from it refreshed and this album does that at times. While some of the songs are a little weak and there are moments where I’m not sure what the band was thinking, this is overall an excellent release.

The Funeral Doom genre is not for the casually listener. It takes a bit of commitment and an interest in the various extremes of metal, but for those with the patience and willingness to explore those extremes, it can be extremely rewarding. If you’re up for the challenge, I would highly recommend “To Mourn is a Virtue.”

Masterointi on puolestaan suoritettu vuonna 2010 - eli melkein 15 vuotta ensimmäisen biisin äänityksestä. Tyyliltään tämä vanha materiaali on hyvin lähellä perinteistä doom metalia, vaikka yhtye onkin paremmin tunnettu nimenomaan yhtenä funeral doom -genren kehittäjistä.

Tästä on pakko antaa yksi piste lisää kokonaisarvosanaan. Doom metalin ystävät varmasti hommannevat tämän hyllyynsä jokatapauksessa, mutta kehtaa tätä kyllä muillekin suositella.

Norway's death/doomers Funeral have been around for a while now, although we haven't heard from them since 2008's "As Light Does the Shadow". The album's opener "Hunger" begins with a gentle melody accompanied by the trademark harmony vocals - harmony that is Frode's eventually branching off into doleful lead vocals. Female vocals have always been a part of Funeral's repertoire and for this album they are saved for the album's end. Accompaniment is in the form of picked single notes and low-end chords that deftly creates their sound which is almost constant throughout the CD. Second track "God" is of a similar slow pace to track one, and occupies more or less the same acoustic territory. Some growling riffs punctuate the general funereal terrain of the song. Not as deathly slow as some bands of the genre, the lyrics are elucidated clearly enough to retain the listener's interest. Again the focus is on harmonies, carrying us forward on a wave of solemnity. "Your Pain Is Mine" begins at the same pace once again, although slower interludes allow us to open our eyes to see wider vistas alongside the track's main meandering. With "The Poison" acoustic soundscapes and an initially terser vocal style grant us new visions, after which the traditional soundscape returns and the pace quickens slightly, only to return us to the former once again. The lyrical content of the clean vocals again manages to lift the track above the dark depths we see below, until "Dancing in a Liquid Veil" introduces us to broader keyboard backing and synth backdrops. Grinding low guitar solo lines mix with the keyboards to usher in the remainder of this nine and a half minute epic. "How Death May Linger" once again mixes guitar and keyboard to create another nine and a half minute extravaganza. At this point to some listeners individual tracks may not appear overly distinguishable from others, but this is an album of completeness. The whole experience is neccessary to understand the album, even if at moments we forget quite where we are in the general scheme of things. "Father" somehow appears more orchestral, whilst "Blood from the soil" has some memorable moments. Final track "Wrapped All in Woe" is joined by the female vocals also, as choral backdrop and as ethereal main vocals. This appears to inject new life into the formula, offering a broader listening experience as male spoken vocals also intersperse between female melodies. In short, this album does what it says on the tin. It is slow paced doom metal, varying very little in pace but within that framework every nuance is made as beautiful as possible in its simplicity, whether it be male harmonies or female chorals. An album enjoyed more by listening to the whole than by analysing every track, I think. Just as a symphony is complete across its moevments, this can be seen as a doom symphony across nine movements. Don't overthink it or you might lose the enjoyment of the entireity. A doom masterpiece of our times.

"The First Mourning" ("Premier Deuil", in French), the beautiful and slightly sinister oil on canvas painting created in 1888 by the neoclassical realistic painter William-Adolphe Bouguereau greets the listener with its striking beauty and rare aesthetics. The painting depicts the sorrowful moment upon which Adam and Eve find the body of their son Abel, having been murdered by his brother Cain. The genuine pain this picture emanates is remarkable, mostly due to the fact the artist had lost his own son shortly before painting his homage to death and loss.

_To Mourn Is a Virtue_ is well worth it for the cover art alone, not to mention the added value of this recording's fine music: this is quality, no matter how you look at it. This album, although not portraying any new material Funeral have recorded, is a great opportunity to listen to the band's rare and obscure material, having been recorded sometime between 1995 and 2002.

This is complete, mature and melancholic material, and other than being recently remastered, it was not tampered with, mirroring the band's state of mind and artistic capabilities some fifteen years ago. It needs no additives nor reduction from what it is, as is; and this music is as relevant today as it had been a decade and a half ago.

This doom beauty is rewarding in many ways: the fine clean vocals of both male singers are rare in the metal world; they deliver their dirges in a way this reviewer was not expecting; their velvety, warm tone, having a measurable streak of utter sadness, pierces the listener like 12 inch acupuncture needles. You may expect some growls, but they never appear, and frankly, the band have made the right choice of incorporating only clear vocals; they lend the overall music a much darker tone than what could have ever been accomplished by the familiar growls that are more often than not a characteristic quality of the funeral doom sub genre.

Add to this the remarkably beautiful female vocals on the closing track, and you have a treat of emotions, melancholy, celestial beauty and otherworldly sadness, all tied tightly together and immaculately delivered for almost 70 minutes -- the best 70 minutes you can spend nowadays, music-wise.

The tunes are well-crafted, basic melodic doom metal that is slow and mournful with the habitual riffs and familiar arrangements, but in the end it's the vocals that really do the trick here and boost the music, sending it into the realms of the astral and the Stygian.

If you have enjoyed Godsend's 1993 timeless album _As the Shadows Fall_, its spirit, its qualities, the atmosphere it creates and mainly Dan Swano's unforgettable vocal performance, you will most likely immensely enjoy this accurately executed, elegantly written, beautifully arranged recording by Funeral.

Yet another great release by Solitude Productions which enables you to explore quality musical material that would have been otherwise sadly and criminally forgotten. _To Mourn Is a Virtue_ will haunt your dreams; its essence will linger on long after the music will have stopped...

Highly recommended!

Как например “To Mourn Is A Virtue”.
