The Polish doom death metal band Oktor is finally ready to present a full-length album after the years of artistic activity, several successful mini albums, compilations and participation in A Tribute to Skepticism! The long tracks alternate with exquisite piano preludes, as if inspired by Frederic Chopin, demonstrate the diversity of ideas: classical dense riffs and low-tempo interludes, a variety of vocals (from clean to growl), alterations of mood and rhythm ... Clean sound of all instruments underlines the high quality of musicians many-years-long searching for their own style.

I polacchi Oktor arrivano al primo full length dopo oltre dieci anni d’attività anche se, di fatto, il loro materiale inedito più recente risale ormai al 2005.

Questo Another Dimension Of Pain mostra una band che, probabilmente, avrebbe avuto bisogno di qualche altra uscita su distanza ridotta per testarsi prima di cimentarsi in un lavoro vicino all’ora di durata.
Infatti, quel che si evince dopo ripetuti ascolti dell’album, è che il sound appare frammentario, con troppi momenti interlocutori che vanno ad interrompere il flusso di un death doom talvolta anche pregevole: tutto ciò comporta, inevitabilmente, che poco o nulla di ciò che si è ascoltato è destinato a restare impresso.
Fondamentalmente il lavoro si compone di tre brani portanti, tutti di considerevole lunghezza, tra i quali la sola Conscious Somatoform Paradise si rivela davvero competitiva, forse perché è quella in cui il trio polacco indulge meno in svenevolezze decadenti, come avviene invece in Mental Paralysis (soprattutto) e in Hemiparesis of the Soul; l’assimilazione delle parti in clean vocals, già di per sé non brillantissime, non vengono certo agevolate dall’utilizzo della lingua madre, mentre ad appesantire il tutto gli Oktor collocano tra queste tracce degli intermezzi pianistici invero minimali, tali da apparire quasi l’accompagnamento musicale dei vecchi film muti (anche se la cosa fosse stata voluta, l’effetto evocativo si rivela decisamente scarso).
Chiude la fatica Undone, brano che vede la voce pulita a sovrapporsi al suddetto stile pianistico, non aggiungendo alcunché ad un album che non riesce mai a decollare: da questo genere ci si aspettano emozioni a profusione oppure sensazioni di straniamento capaci di avvolgere nella loro spira l’ascoltatore ma, in Another Dimension Of Pain nulla di tutto ciò accade, forse perché gli Oktor hanno voluto fare il passo più lungo della gamba.
In tal caso, auspicando un aggiustamento di tiro, li aspettiamo alla prossima occasione con idee compositive focalizzate su un death doom magari più lineare ma, nel contempo, più omogeneo ed efficace.

Den polske trioen Oktor har vжrt aktive i litt over ti еr, og gir nе ut sin fшrste skive. Enkelt sagt veksler annenhvert spor mellom korte intro/intermesso og lеter. De fire korte mellomspillene heter henholdsvis Another, Dimension, Of & Pain, og bestеr av 1-2 minutter lange pianostykker. Disse har relativt enkel oppbygning og er ikke spesielt spennende hverken i melodi eller kropp, selv om de sikkert er krevende nok е spille.

Det er tre riktig sе lange lеter her. To pе rundt 13 og en pе over 17. Bandets death/doom har lett funeralske vibber. Det rusler og gеr, uten nevneverdig engasjement fra denne lytteren. Musikk og growl framstеr som heller generisk og kjedelig, mens renvokalvokalen er heller fжlslig. Melodilinjene appellerer heller ikke, da de har et likeglad preg som skaper en шrkeslшs, passiv og nшytral stemning. Noen fе greie unntak finnes. Partiet med hyl av fortvilelse rundt 12 minutter ut i Hemiparesis of the Soul er for eksempel passe dystopisk.

Etter det fjerde piano-mellomspillet fеr vi lеta Undone som med sine knappe fem minutter er betraktelig kortere enn de шvrige. Denne blir som en mellomting mellom de to artene av spor, der melodisk pianospill blandes med poppete renvokal som ikke lеter direkte grusomt, bare en smule plagsomt. I sin helhet finner jeg dessverre ingen sжrlig interesse i Another Dimension of Pain. Det fшles simpelt hen som om Oktor har forsшkt е lage et soundtrack til kjedsomhet, og det er kjedelig det.

They have been around for more than a decade, but the Polish band Oktor have only done an EP, split and a compilation appearance. They make their full-length debut with Another Dimension Of Pain.

The album is very deliberate and unfolds slowly. Instrumental piano tracks are followed by epic doom/death metal songs of up to 17 minutes long. There are spoken word vocals, clean vocals and harsh vocals. The music is equally diverse, ranging from heavy doom to moderate metal to classical flavored atmospherics. There's a lot of absorb, but with repeated listens you'll really feel the musical and emotional impact.
