Дебюта Stoned Jesus я с нетерпением ждал с момента его анонсирования. Иначе и быть не могло – каноничный стоунер-дум, содержащийся на демках "Иисуса", хотелось слушать снова и снова, несмотря на ужасный, режущий уши звук (это я говорю при глубоком уважении к сырости и невыглаженности). Вдобавок, основатель команды – мой земляк (обитал в Луганской области), а подобного рода факты хоть и не меняют дело коренным образом, но значат немало… Первого августа в качестве интернет-релиза свет увидел "First Communion", при знакомстве с которым я испытывал невыразимое чувство гордости за молодую отечественную сцену. Ведь это, ни много, ни мало, настоящий прорыв для Украины и уверенное утверждение позиций стоунер-дума как стиля, достойного международного обожания.
Думаю, учитывая удручающе малое количество треков, позволительно разобрать каждый по отдельности, но прежде стоит сказать пару слов об общем звучании. Саунд оказался неожиданно качественным и легким – гудящего жира поубавилось (хоть демки и страдали от ожирения, такой поворот событий мне не пришелся по душе). Работа Игоря вызывает уважение: отличный вокал, похожий на манеру Оззи Осборна на дебюте "Сэббэтов" слишком сильно, чтобы не обратить на это внимание, стройные и броские риффы – все, как полагается. Если говорить о продюссировании, то к гитаре у меня нет нареканий, но бас можно было сделать упитаннее, а ударные – поэффектнее. Уж очень они серые, как мне кажется. По большому счету, мягкость сильно повлияла на восприятие материала. Ныне Stoned Jesus представляет собой скорее тяжелый рок, отсылающий в 70-е, чем что-то "думовое" и трудновоспринимаемое. Всё на благо случайного, "необученного" слушателя. Такая политика, конечно, выгодна для нераспространенного, набирающего обороты жанра, но лично меня ничуть не радует. Впрочем, это не слишком влияет на действительно хорошую музыку, мнение о которой изначально было высоким и ничуть не изменилось.
1. Сделать "Occult" открывающей песней – это, на мой взгляд, то же самое, что встречать потенциального врага торжественной демонстрацией ахиллесовой пяты. Песня кривоватая и странная сама по себе, что особенно бросается в глаза при сравнении с остальными композициями. Должен сказать, что демо "Occult" превосходит альбомную версию - там и интро было поинтереснее, и расстановка риффов более логична, что ли (временами возникает стойкое ощущение, что риффы "не клеются"). Да и в целом качественное, чистое звучание песне этой, как мне кажется, не к лицу. 7/10.
2. Начиная со второго трека "First Communion" бьет наповал. "Red Wine" – это одна из лучших песен, вышедших под маркой "стоунер" в пост-СССР; в меру эмоциональная, ироничная ретро-хард баллада звучит свежо, самобытно и надолго оседает в памяти. Тут придраться не к чему, потому и писать больше не о чем. 10/10.
3. "Black Woods" не претерпела значительных изменений, и это правильно, так как, по сути – это главный хит Stoned Jesus и на демо производил внушительное впечатление. Единственный недочет – это финал трека, скопированный (уверен, неумышленно) с "Children of the Grave". 9/10.
4. "Falling Apart" - пустынный, психоделический (этот параметр, пожалуй, здесь наиболее ярко выражен) стоунер-дум в лучших традициях Sleep. Стоит обратить внимание на отлично вписавшиеся семплы из старинного фильма ужасов "Alucarda" и три гостевых соло: первое сыграл Камиль (The Grand Astoria, Neversmile), второе – Кирилл Бре (X-box Murder, 5R6), а третье – Антон Тошнотвор (Without God, The Suicider). У песни есть собственное лицо (угоревшего наркомана, страдающего от жажды, если желаете конкретики), и как завершение альбома она смотрится отлично. 8/10.
"First Communion" – добротная работа, цепляющая и обнадеживающая. Мои ожидания целиком и полностью оправданы, а расстроить этот альбом может только своей малой продолжительностью. Ура, Stoned Jesus!

Woher die Inspiration für diesen Bandnamen kommt, wollen wir zur Sicherheit unkommentiert lassen, schließlich soll hier nicht die Bibelgeschichte interpretiert werden. Vielmehr steht "First Communion" auf dem Menüplan, das erste Album einer Truppe aus der Ukraine, die uns vier Tracks in einer opulenten Spielzeit von knapp über vierzig Minuten anzubieten hat und allein dadurch bereits einschlägig veranlagte Jünger auf den Plan rufen sollte.

Eher gewagt legt die Formation mit dem Opener "Occult" los. Exakt zehn Minuten dauert dieses Intermezzo an, das eher den Stoner Rock-Freak als den Doomer zufriedenstellen wird. Herrlich wabernde Riffs dominieren und lassen den Hörer in die nicht gerade bunte Welt der Truppe entschweben. Doch bevor für diesen der Griff zum vegetarischen Genussmittel Nummer Eins erfolgt, wissen die Balten ein probates Gegenmittel anzuwenden um selbst den gestandenen Metaller voll und ganz auf ihre Seite zu ziehen.

Das folgende "Red Wine" kommt nämlich mit dermaßen authentischer BLACK SABBATH-Schlagseite aus den Boxen, dass man doch meint die Bibel umschreiben zu müssen, denn dieser Jesus scheint ein bislang unbekannter Bruder des "Urvater" aller Metaller aus dem Norden Englands zu sein. Den Einfluss des Frühwerkes von OZZY und Konsorten merkt man aber nicht nur in den Gesangslinien überdeutlich, auch die Atmosphäre kommt jener der Frühwerke von BLACK SABBATH sehr nahe.

Allerdings lassen uns STONED JESUS dabei sehr wohl auch wissen, dass sie in ihren Texten nicht nur dem Okkultismus frönen, sondern sehr wohl auch irdischen Freuden. Mit knapp über fünf Minuten zeigt man sich in "Red Wine" auch noch geradezu "radiotauglich", doch schon kurz darauf geht es auf einen ausufernden Ausflug in die "Black Woods". Dafür muss man abermals die Legende aus Birmingham als Anhaltspunkt anführen, wobei es Igor Sidorenko leider nicht ganz schafft das Riffing im Stile von Tony Iommi auf vergleichbar imposante Weise darzubieten, sehr wohl jedoch erneut dem jungen OZZY verdammt nahe zu kommen. Im Vergleich zu ähnlich inspirierten Bands, wie beispielsweise COUNT RAVEN, fällt auf, dass STONED JESUS rifftechnisch weniger traditionell schwermetallisch und heftig agieren, sondern stattdessen geradezu zum "Eintauchen" in ihre mitunter gen Space Rock tendierenden Elegien einladen.

Bestes Bespiel dafür, das an den Schluss gestellte "Falling Apart", dessen simple, wie effektive Strukturen den Großteil der überlangen Spielzeit ausmachen. Diese werden jedoch immer wieder mit wabernden Klangkaskaden durchzogen und sorgen so für eine kurzweilige Reise in die vernebelten Sphären von STONED JESUS.

Die "Erstkommunion" ist ziemlich erfolgreich verlaufen, ich melde mich hier und jetzt schon gerne für die nächste(n) an!

Dopo aver dato alle stampe due ottimi demo giunge l'agognato debutto sotto l'ala protettrice della Solitude Productions per gli ucraini Stoned Jesus, progetto nato dalla mente malefica e diabolica del cantante Igor Sidorenko. Il trio ha basato l'intero album su delle ritmiche che restano fedeli al più classico stoner doom di chiara matrice settantiana. Il pezzo che si diversifica in questa pietra miliare di quaranta minuti è "Red Wine", brano della durata di soli cinque minuti a differenza di "Occult", "Black Woods" e "Falling Apart" che superano molto spesso i dieci minuti. Ciò che rende questo lavoro ben riuscito, attraente, mai noioso e tantomeno scontato è la maniacale, acida produzione, il sound delle chitarre che risulta sempre sporco ma al tempo stesso altamente atmosferico, e la titanica prova del cantante Igor Sidorenko che in alcuni punti richiama molto le linee vocali del famosissimo "Madman". Un lavoro adatto, quindi, sia agli adoratori del doom classico, sia a chi, profano del genere, voglia riscoprire le radici di questo stile musicale che lungi dall’essere obsoleto e stagnante è vivo e vegeto ed addirittura, oserei dire, in continua evoluzione.

Stoned Jesus are an side project for Krobak guitarist Igor "Prog-Jester" Sidorenko and they come from the rarely heard about Ukraine and I mean rare in terms of Doom Metal. The band I have heard from there though have mostly been really good and Stoned Jesus are no exception. This four track/forty minute album is out on the Solitude Productions label and is a big departure from the usual Solitude Productions product, the label features mainly bands in the "My Dying Bride" Gothic style or Funeral Doom type acts but Stoned Jesus are very much in the Psychedelic/Stoner Doom vein of Electric Wizard and Sleep with an serious Black Sabbath jamming edge. The four tracks here, most of which are 10 minutes plus in length are very hallucinogenic and mesmerizing but more importantly have a loose bluesy, jammy feel about them.

The opening track "Occult" has an wonderfully organic riff and the production on this album is very warm and thick. The opening riff of the track cruises along with a tasty groove for a few minutes before it drops several gears into an plodding doom dirge, the likes of which is common but its done here with a lot of taste. The second half of the ten minutes is mostly based around some infectious riff work before the tune goes back home to the riff that started it all, its a very good opening track. "Red Wine" is the shortest of the three tunes here and is straight of the Sleep "Holy Mountain" song-book but with vocals straight from Black Sabbath circa 1972. He does indeed have a "Ozzy" twang to his voice but it suits this tune particularly well, there is more great guitar tones on here that are warm and fuzzy with a bluesy type swagger.

"Black Woods" is more Sabbathian worship in the Volume 4 vein, it has a lay back jamming groove but there isn't a lot of riffs to enjoy here. Actually the song pretty much rides the same riff for most of the 12 minutes but its kept interesting with the use of some guitar effects and some killer lead work. The jamming vibe is in evidence throughout as it sounds loose and live while the analog, vintage sounds really capture a mood long since past in Heavy Rock music. Make no mistake, this is Psychedelic bluesy Doom Metal, the perfect soundtrack for bong-hits and despite its repetitive nature "Black Woods" stands out as the best track on "First Communion". The album ends on "Falling Apart" and it gets even more Psychedelic and certainly more bluesy. Like the previous song there isn't much in terms of variation as it is based around one single riff but its hypnotic and full of bass-laden grooves. Perhaps its a little too long for the lack of musical ideas presented but it still delivers the goods.

The bottom line here is Stoned Jesus are guilty of recycling riffs to a point but they are not really a clone of any other band but they are also not original in any shape or form. The overall lack of riffs means after 40 minutes of listening to this, there isn't a hell of a lot that sticks in your memory. "Red Wine" is the catchiest and the easiest to digest but "Black Woods" stands out as being the most ambitious track overall. For fans of Electric Wizard, Sleep, Sabbath and Reverend Bizarre (the first track actually sounds like a RB song). I must say cheers to Solitude Productions for sticking this band on their label, it makes a welcome change to their usual output. Anyone who is a fan of the bands I mentioned will dig this but the band is capable of better, more unique work and maybe on the next album they will deliver just that......a low

With such a name and a label Stoner setting ahead by the label, one could expect one good moment of Rock of the desert under acid to taste with a happy smile with the lips. But our friends of STONED JESUS arrive to us from Ukraine and preferred to prepare a mixture definitely more adventurous.

Then yes, one finds low mammouthesque, the vocal ones embrumés lost in the mix, of the riffs fats like lard a slice of bread and of the soli inherited the Seventies. None of these ingredients is particularly transcended but the whole is practised with an unquestionable control, in the absence of innovative audacity. An amateur of KYUSS will be able to only adhere to the introduction very Blues space of Falling Apart.

However, STONED JESUS forced the amount on the influences resulting from the Rock psychédélique. In the many planing elements, the structures full of traps testify. Side Stoner psychedelic occupies the front of the scene on Red Wine, the shortest title of the album.

But the true asset of STONED JESUS, it is its propensity to make its matter definitely more sinister and rigorous while returning allegiance to the Masters of the Doom extreme to the REVEREND BIZARRE or ELECTRIC WIZARD. Illustration: the album comprises four titles, Red Wine acting as single with its five minutes. The three other titles exceed the ten minutes and are pretext to be amalgamated groove hypnotic of the Stoner, the severe skids psychedelic and the lancinances rhythmic of the Doom extreme (riff martial repetitive, désincarné song). Black Woods is for this reason very representative since the principal melodies seem left an album of BLACK SABBATH period Ozzy (song in particular!), but the general atmosphere derives largely towards an icy rhythmic obsession. The manner that has STONED JESUS to hammer a rhythmic topic can point out - in less to the boutist - the search of riff ultimate which prevailed at SLEEP.

the risk with this kind of mixture, it is to lose themselves on the way, to fall into the abuse and excess. Although frankly barred, the compositions present on First Communion always end up falling down on a discussion thread: a rhythmic plan, a melody. In addition, the clearness of the mixing and the depth of the production help considerably to preserve a coherence. Excellent first communion, highly the solemn communion.

With a name like Stoned Jesus you really do have to investigate into the band a bit further, sort of like the Butthole Surfers (a personal fave), and when you do you’ll find an awesome heavy psyche/stoner/doom with occult influences but more similar in sound to Sleep than Electric Wizard. Consisting of 4 tracks about 10+ minutes in length each it’s really easy to get lost in the bluesy swagger and hallucinogenic occult world crafted through sound on First Communion. I really love the way this Ukranian band mixes the more classic slow burning boogie of 70’s Doom, but also manages to add more up tempo stoner blasts throughout the album to give it an additional kick and undeniably convert the listener over to Stoned Jesus.

“Occult”: The opening riff and first half of this first track definitely gives that slow burn groove and warm analog distortion feel that many of us chase our own tail around in circles over, but after three minutes of that riff and rhythm play the tempo suddenly runs into a pool of quicksand and slows down to a lethargic and massively “stoned” pace like a classic Doom track would. That carries on for about 3 minutes when it suddenly picks up into a stoner doom track and the guitar shows some pretty catchy and almost funky guitar picking. Then the opening riff piece comes back into play. Definitely a nice opener for a pretty badass debut album, I’m completely taken in and will be avidly listening to this band for some time to come.

“Red Wine” is the shortest track and really shows some great guitar work and would feel greatly at home on Holy Mountain, the vocals are very classic Black Sabbath in vocal tone and also delivery (but without the nasal Ozzy impersonations thankfully).

“Black Woods” is an absolute classic Black Sabbath/70’s heavy blues homage and one of my favorite tracks on here for that reason. It leans more toward Black Sabbaths Volume 4 then more covered and imitated sounds of Paranoid. It’s quite laid back in tempo, but always chugging along in rhythm to keep the boogie active. The song is broken up halfway with a great guitar solo and mini jam then resumes it’s blues and roll journey. I also enjoy the effects used on the guitar on this one, it really brings out that tin-like metallic sound with each strum and pick that really hones in the classic feel found here. Honestly, this track alone makes this a new classic in my mind as it has all of the great elements of classic doom and 70’s heavy psychedelic blues but somehow makes it unique and modern as well without ruining the vintage influence.

“Falling Apart” is definitely psychedelic blues!!!!!! You get a small hint of desert rock, but still mainly heavy psychedelic blues with some occultism by way of sampled women’s voices talking about “…Satan their master”. I also hear something extremely familiar in this track, but can’t seem to nail exactly what/who it instinctively reminds me of, but Sleep is definitely the main connection that I make aside from the one that isn’t coming to mind right at this moment.

Seriously, check out Stoned Jesus!!!!! This should perfectly suit those who enjoy Doom, stoner, heavy psychedelic, and bluesy grooves with tons of distortion and warm red glow!!!!!

Ukrainalainen Stoned Jesus on vanhan koulukunnan stoner/doom-yhdistelmä. Jos referoidaan lyhyesti bändin taustasta, niin yhtye perustettiin Igor "Prog-Jesterin" Krobak-bändin sivuprojektiksi, josta myöhemmin kuitenkin sukeutui täysipäinen livebändi. Kyse on siis stoner doomista ja psykedelisestä rockista, jossa on ilmiselviä vaikutteita Sleepilta ja Electric Wizardilta.

Neljän biisin First Communion -EP on siis sludgehtavaa ja hivenen psykedelistä, fuzz-säröistä musiikkia. Tuotanto levyllä on aavistuksen tunkkaista, ehkä tietoisestikin sellaista. Lätyltä löytyy muutama nopeampaan riffittelyyn perustuvaa hetkeä, jotka ovat sukua ainakin Black Sabbathin Into The Voidille, mutta yleisesti ottaen tempo on hitaanpuoleinen. Black Woodsin alkupuolen yksi riffeistä on varastettu suoraan Sabbathin Children of the Gravesta. Siitä huolimatta tämä noin kymmenminuuttinen biisi on levyn paras kokonaisuutena.

Stoned Jesus on siis genressään ihan kelvollinen tapaus, mutta mitään bändin muista aikalaismassoista erottavaa ei ryhmässä ole.

Hailing from Ukraine, Stoned Jesus is an old school stoner/doom amalgam. Borrowing some background info from the band's MySpace page: Stoned Jesus emerged as Igor Prog-Jester's Krobak side-project, later turning into a full-time live band. This is Stoner Doom/Psychedelic Rock with obvious influences like Sleep and Electric Wizard.

Indeed, First Communion, a four song EP, is sludgy, a tad psychedelic and fuzzy to boot. The production is a bit stuffy, probably on purpose. A few interludes of faster riffage and more uptempo, akin to Black Sabbath's Into The Void per se, but overall the songs are slow in tempo. Black Woods has a riff stolen straight from Sabbath's Children Of The Grave once the song picks up, and that said perhaps this is the best tune on the album overall, and a long one at that at around 10 minutes.

Stoned Jesus is generally good for its genre, but that said I don't hear anything that really catches my listening ear.

Dopo un paio di demo ecco spuntare dalle lande ucraine gli Stoned Jesus. Gruppo composto da personaggi dai progetti a me sconosciuti eccezion fatta per i dark ambient Voida del cantante Igor Sidorenko.
Ancora una volta la Solitude Productions si muove egregiamente, in questo caso esplorando inediti (per l'area geografica interessata) territori stoner/doom . Eppure se visualizziamo mentalmente certe terre aride dei paesi dell'est europeo, la proposta calza a pennello, e questo First Communion potrebbe essere un importante apripista per questo genere cosi particolare.

First Communion ci accoglie nel più classico dei modi proponendo però brani di una certa lunghezza. Cosi nei quaranta minuti messi a disposizione abbiamo solo una breve Red Wine di cinque minuti per passare ai dieci ed oltre delle restanti Occult, Black Woods e Falling Apart. Il sound attinge a piene mani negli anni settanta e per quanto possa essere scontanto dirlo si rifà a mostri sacri come Black Sabbath e Pentagram. Il tutto è prodotto con il metodo più sabbioso e acido possibile, cosi le chitarre fanno il loro sporco dovere conferendo i ritmi necessari ad un uscita di questo tipo. Come ciliegina sulla torta troviamo anche la prestazione vocale di Igor Sidorenko che dopo una cerimoniale Occult (il brano più doom ed oscuro di First Communion), si lancia in vocalizzi alla Ozzy Osbourne per il resto del disco. Red Wine ambisce cosi a divenire un piccolo classico nella sua immediatezza, se l'avessero composta i Black Sabbath tutti l'avrebbero certamente accolta come capolavoro. Black Woods emette una fumosità perenne, voce sguainata, riff scanditi nella più totale aridità e una mitica accelerazione a due minuti dalla fine che scuote il brano alla grandissima. La conclusiva Falling Apart, è invece più dinamica con delle chitarre che sdradicano la pelle, grandioso il riff d'apertura (e la sua evoluzione) e ottima la prestazione del cerimoniere Igor.

First Communion è passo obbligatorio per tutti gli adoratori del vecchio sound. Un tuffo negli anni settanta vero e proprio aiutati anche dall'impatto visivo di logo e copertina totalmente idonei alla musica. Qui non si sbaglia, si va solo a colpo sicuro.

"First Communion" - первый полноценный релиз украинцев Stoned Jesus. В поисках вдохновения группа отправилась в дремучие 70-е, прямо к истокам дума, и нашла там тяжёлый рок с ярко выраженной блюзовой составляющей и, прежде всего, (неожиданно) Black Sabbath. А также психоделию, привкус которой помогает размазывать композиции, не обращая внимания на всё ускоряющее свой бег время. Путешествие в историю состоялось, а вот вернуться в 2010-й год с пусть и стилизованным под дум-ветошь, но живым современным материалом и звучанием, у Stoned Jesus не вышло.
Альбом включает четыре сочинения, среди которых только одно не разменивает десятка минут. Все они почти полностью состоят из "больших" риффов - ровных, медленных, вальяжных, сонно топчущихся по пентатонике и где-то рядом с ней, старчески хрустящих ретро-фуззом и мерно чихающих четвертями и половинками по тарелкам. Риффы много повторяются, и песни движутся неторопливо, как зомби в классических фильмах, и походка у них такая же неровная и неестественная. Например, в открывающей альбом вещи "Occult", после того как она преодолевает большую часть своего хронометража, есть место, где кажется, что она закончилась. Но потом, сквозь череду плохо связанных эпизодов, вновь прорывается знакомый по началу песни рифф. Следующая за ней "Red Wine" - самая компактная и простая для восприятия песня на пластинке, единственная, шаг которой лёгок. К ней есть удачная видео-нарезка из фильма "Валери и неделя чудес" (ищите на Youtube), по мотивам которого, видимо, написан её текст. Вообще, как тексты, так и название группы, атмосфера альбома, построены на думовых штампах. С одной стороны, они очевидны - музыкантов не заподозришь в том, что всё это всерьёз, но и какого-либо обыгрывания этих общих мест, контекста, в котором они бы стали предметами в руках жонглёра, нет. Мы можем догадываться об иронии создателей "First Communion" и только. Причём, само звучание группы на этом альбоме не "работает" и на эту тему - оно очень выхолощенное, в нём нет прото-металического грохота ударных и глубины гитарного гула, то есть, никакой ироничной "игры в старо-дум" услышать не удастся, как бы не намекало на неё оформление диска и упомянутые лирика и атмосфера.
Конечно, из экскурсии к истокам жанра можно вернуться и с полным багажом вполне употребимых в настоящем идей. Например, Electric Wizard идут "до конца", стараясь дотошно реконструировать "то самое" звучание, и с его помощью вдохнуть в свои песни мрачную энергию, а Wo Fat используют характерные гитарные эффекты и воссоздают в своей музыке психодел-атмосферу на манер 70-х. Salome и вовсе движутся значительно дальше просто интересных опытов, базируя на "саббато-подобии" свой завораживающий и полностью современный звук. Думаю, если Stoned Jesus сделают большой шаг вперёд в работе со звучанием и хотя бы небольшой в плане качестве материала, то в один ряд с первыми двумя упомянутыми коллективами им встать удастся. Да и сейчас их музыка востребована - всё же тех, кто считает, что "правильный" тяжёлый рокешник вне времени, а приятный хард-блюзовый солячок всегда "в тему", множество. Если и вы готовы подписаться под этим, то на оценку не обращайте внимания.

Хлопцы жгут, причём по полной. Стоунер… не, психоделлик рок... не, блюз… а! всё это вместе взятое врывается в окна соседей из хрипящих и надрывающихся на пределе колонок. Только так нужно слушать эту музыку и отрываться по полной, как это делали в волосатых годах замечательного прошлого XX-го века. Раздолбайский звук, манера исполнения, мелодии и ритмы – полный набор! Но при всём при этом техничность исполнения, грамотно подобранные тембры и манеры (полное ретро!) и драйв-драйв-драйв!

Типичный грязный звук перегруженных гитар, сиплый крикливый вокал, ударка без современных излишеств, бас с хрипацой в подаче этого пауэр-трио не может не зацепить, пусть даже вы не любитель жанра.

Не знаю, как соответствуют имиджу музыканты как люди – прожигать жизнь, плюя на условности, пить пиво, когда в зубах нет косяка (и наоборот), из одежды вытертые драные джинсы и «казаки» и пр. – но чисто по музыке получилось убедительно. Правда, музыка без жизни мертва. Если всё «тру», то желаю музыкантам здоровья; если же это закос под то, «как это было у кумиров», то лучше заняться каким-нибудь общественно полезным делом. А так – неплохое ретро!
