Premier album du groupe russe The Sullen Route, “Madness of My Own Design” porte haut les ténébreuses couleurs du Doom Death le plus pur et classique.

Soit huit titres basés sur quelques principes aussi simples que terriblement efficaces.
Il y a bien évidemment les rythmiques implacablement écrasantes, déroulées à des allures majestueusement lentes. C’est tout à la fois le poids du désespoir et la main implacable d’un sombre destin qui s’expriment, double parrainage renforcé par des textes inspirés des mondes cauchemardesques inventés par Lovecraft ou plus directement expressions d’une vision sans retour de l’existence.

Le chant évolue dans des registres foncièrement caverneux, ce qui n’est pas un gage d’originalité mais ce qui renforce l’impression qu’une force désincarnée et fantômatique est à l’oeuvre sur cet album. Surtout, chaque titre est porté par un ou plusieurs thèmes mélodiques réitérés jusqu’à l’obsession. Ces mélodies typiquement Heavy Metal sont ralenties au point d’atteindre une transcendance et un lyrisme qui aèrent quelque peu tous les autres éléments instrumentaux et vocaux.

Au final, The Sullen Route ne peut pas prétendre révolutionner le Doom death (et sûrement n’en est-il pas question) mais “Madness of My Own Design” peut assurément en conforter plus d’un dans une vision nihiliste tant du métal que de la vie.

This is the debut of a young Russian band called The Sullen Route and once again proves that Russia not only has some of the most devastating Doom Metal bands in the world but have a sound all of their own. Apart from Britain, Russia is perhaps the only other country that produces Doom / Death bands with a totally unique sound considering most other countries produce bands with a mix of mostly American and European influences. Sadly Russian bands are largely unappreciated and most often the most abused through mass illegal downloading, this might have something to do with the very loose Internet laws in their country. The Sullen Route comes from Volgograd which is as far as i know is a very bleak environment to grow up in which may account for some of the darkness on display in this hour of brutal despairing, hollowing music. Obvious comparisons would be the likes of Mourning Beloveth, Process Of Guilt, Ataraxie, Minsk, Mouth of The Architect, Centurions Ghost, Evoken, Skepticism, Officum Triste and Esoteric.

What makes this album such a special release is the degree of sophistication for such a young band showcasing their talents on a debut album. I would also go as far to say that this might just be the best debut release ever from a Death / Doom band from not only Russia but the whole of Europe. So big cheers to Solitude Productions for getting this band signed and putting this one out there, this is a monumental piece of work. Highlighting tracks in unnecessary in this review because this is back to back full of endless great emotional Doom Metal that uses pure Guitar to get the feelings across unlike most other bands in the genre that use and abuse the symphonic approach via Keyboards. The album lets you suffocate in a sea of cold atmosphere and their is no light at the end of the tunnel on this disc, its a un-pleasant journey but a moving one that will leave you exhausted and emotionally charged with anger, despair and sadness.

The Sullen Route's take on the Death / Doom genre is one laced with classical instrumentation but its never overdone, they use some technical guitar string arpeggios but like i previously said, this is class way beyond their young years. "Dagon", "Gates", and "I Come With The Rain" set the tone for the album in the first three tracks and that heavy intense mood is never lifted. The first three tracks are all killer exercises in controlled musical torment but other stand out tracks are the title track "Madness Of My Own Design" and the 10 minute album closer "One Way For Burning". While this is a incredibly deep and menacing album, its nothing new or original and if you have heard the bands i compared them to then you will know what to expect with The Sullen Route but this is so sophisticated for a debut album, it is stunning beyond belief. The band is made of Djaspam - Guitar/Vocals, Sergey - Guitar, Alena - Bass, Aleksey - Drums and they should be very proud of this recording. The production is excellent and the playing throughout is immaculate, i took one point off for the lack of originality but apart from that, this has everything you could want from a Death / Doom release. Buy It!!

Российский думовый лейбл Solitude Productions продолжает радовать нас отличными дум-метал новинками и открывать новые звёзды на небосклоне российского дум-дэт метала. Вот и дебютанты из Волгограда The Sullen Route (Печальный Путь), играющие очень хороший дум-дэт метал. Как-то всё больше российские группы играют либо фьюнерал либо готик-дум с клавишами, а вот простого «безклавишного» дум-дэта у нас особо и нету – The Sullen Route же играют именно такую музыку: сухой, но при этом очень мощно звучащий меланхоличный, отстраненный от сего мира, дум с мощным угрюмым гроулом и совершенно без клавиш. Зато с приятными мелодиями и очень красивыми гитарными соло (немного в духе традиционного дум-метала)! Реально простой, даже можно сказать, незатейливый, дум-дэт, но цепляющий, мелодичный, очень качественный! На ум приходят не так много сравнений – может только Mourning Beloveth (здесь, правда, нет чистого вокала). Но, в общем, это не важно, ибо это хороший, очень хороший дум-металлический альбом, с которым группа, безусловно приобретёт много поклонников!

Zatímco drtivá většina posluchačů extrémní hudby směřuje své hudební bádání do zemí na západ od nás, málokterý z nich si uvědomuje, že neméně zajímavé spolky fungují i na východní straně Evropy. A mnohé z nich by si zasloužily větší pozornost medií i fanoušků. Konkrétně Rusko skrývá mnoho talentovaných hudebníků, jejichž umění vzniká v nelehkých podmínkách a v mnohých případech je skoro zázrak, že se vůbec můžeme s jejich výtvory setkat. Možná právě proto, že tito hudebníci nejsou svázáni povinnostmi vůči vydavateli a jejich hudba vychází čistě z vnitřního popudu, je oproti té, která se k nám dostává ze západních zemí, v mnohém bohatší a lze v ní stále hledat spoustu čistých a opravdových emocí.

Čím však v mnohém kapely z východu trpí, je lehký deficit progrese a u tradičnějších stylů i snaha zůstat věrný žánru. To je i případ ruských THE SULLEN ROUTE. Ačkoliv je jejich debut "Madness of My Own Design" překvapující v tom, jak jistě na něm kapela samotná vystupuje a jak dotaženou má produkci, nemohu se zbavit pocitu, že se až příliš drží prapůvodního death/doomového modelu. Tato deska rozhodně v mnohém převyšuje drtivou většinu podobných debutů, ale při bližším pohledu lze snadno vystopovat, že skladatelská zručnost a objevování vlastního hudebního potenciálu jsou během na dlouhou trať.

Všem osmi skladbám náleží vše, čím se doomový žánr vyznačoval na počátku devadesátých let. Nepostradatelný pomalý rytmus, který se často přehoupne do rychlejšího deathového riffování; táhlé, uplakané melodie a v neposlední řadě i procítěný growling. To v sobě skrývá sázku na jistotu, avšak ani stopu původnosti a originality. Proto myslím, že jakákoliv podobnost až zaměnitelnost kupříkladu s původní tvorbou MOURNING BELOVETH je zde zcela zřejmá.

Pokud jste milovníky dřevního doom metalu a v podobných záležitostech si libujete, vězte, že tato deska vás rozhodně nezklame. Její předností je zdravě vysoko nasazená kvalitativní laťka, díky které se na příští desce ukáže, zda se Rusové hodlají napevno usadit tam, kde si jsou jisti sami sebou, nebo se vydají na nejistou a odvážnou pouť hledání vlastní identity. Osobně doufám, že vzhledem k jejich věku je tato deska jen počátkem mnohem zajímavější cesty.

Arrivano da uno sperduto angolo della Russia meridionale tra il mar Nero ed il mar Caspio questi The Sullen Route, ennesima band proposta dalla sempre intraprendente Solitude Production. La band, all’esordio assoluto con questo “Madness Of My Own Design”, propone un doom death mai troppo estremo e con degli sporadici rimandi al gothic doom albionico. I nomi più noti che vengono alla mente sono quelli degli immancabili My Dying Bride, Swallow The Sun e Draconian, senza scordare un pizzico di Katatonia che non guasta mai. I russi però non riescono a riattualizzare sonorità piuttosto vecchie, né riescono a disegnare trame interessanti per quanto derivative. Il loro songwriting è infatti semplice e lineare, l’esecuzione è ancora acerba e, come se non bastasse, anche la produzione contribuisce a rovesciare sul prodotto un’aura amatoriale. A completare il quadro, i ragazzi inseriscono in track list un brano, “I Come With The Rain”, della durata di trentasei minuti, durante il quale si alternano partiture death doom dozzinali e arpeggi darkeggianti scolastici. Inutile dire che non si esce vivi da questo polpettone. Anche negli episodi più brevi (mai sotto i cinque minuti, comunque), le cose che saltano all’orecchio sono la mancanza di creatività e/o di capacità compositive che possano ovviare ad essa. Tutti i brani sono più o meno uguali, suonati da un manipolo di ragazzi volenterosi ma ancora indietro tecnicamente. Sinceramente non ci aspettavamo un simile scivolone da parte della Solitude, solitamente label piuttosto attenta e preparata in campo doom et similia. Magari la band crescerà con gli anni, magari mancano ancora della necessaria esperienza ed amalgama per proporre musica che di base deve essere emozionale e profonda, ma di certo questo “Madness Of My Own Design” non sarà mai un album degno di essere ricordato.
