Ukraines Edenian is the new name on the worlds metal scene. "Winter Shades" is their debut album. When you look at the artwork of this album, read the band name and the title of the album, you will think that this is just another boring gothic metal band. Actually, maybe it is, but... There is something in their music, there is depth, there is tragedy. Band irresistibly reminds of old Macbeth, Silentium, Draconian, maybe even Virgin Black. Production is crystal clear, riffs heavy and slow, mid tempo drums, baroque keyboards, male and female vocals entwined, and all of it reminds of an unwriten music drama. This album is only for the fans of the above mentioned bands, lovers of gothic doom and gothic metal. I can’t say I am a fan of the mentioned genres, but some of it I liked. This album will be listened.

It’s always interesting listen to some new band from country you are living in. This time it’s EDENIAN from Kharkiv, with its first full-length album. Well… To be honest I didn’t expect for some aggressive or brutal stuff, coz I have already noted – here in our country almost each new band playing some light or modern music. EDENIAN comes by path of such DRACONIAN, TRISTANIA etc (under word “path” I meant their way of playing). Yes, this is typical gothic/doom metal, yes, there are two vocals – male and female of course, yes – there are beautiful melodies and good atmosphere. Now, - there are no – anything personal (sounds a bit like some tribute album)… Just one negative thing I have found there – no anything personal… But in spite of this fact I’m dare to say – the band did it’s work on high level, first – good record quality, and second – really professional music (starting with performance and ending with vocals[female vocals are really good in the fact]). So I can really recommend this band to every gothic/doom metal freak. I’m sure fans of this style will like EDENIAN a lot.

Podemos destacar nesse trabalho as faixas, além da citada Thy Heavens Wept in Mourn, as seguintes Winter Shades, The Field Where I Died, Embittered Silence.

Esimerkiksi David Duchovnyn monologilla avaava The Field Where I Died on varsin vakuuttava sävelteos. Tekstipuolella Winter Shades on taas huomattavasti keskivertometallilevyä tyylikkäämpi tapaus selkeällä näkemyksellisyydellään. Vaaka kallisteleekin siis puolelta toiselle monta kertaa albumin edetessä.

A lemez felvételekor két segítség is érkezett a hörgős részek felvitelére, csakhogy meglegyen a műfaj fontos eleme, a „szépség és a szörnyeteg” vokálpárosítás. Annyiban azonban eltértek a szokott recepttől, hogy imitt-amott előfordul tiszta férfihang is, sőt narrációval is találkozunk a hosszú 54 percben. A szörnyeteg egészen hatásos is lett, amolyan Betray My Secretses, viszont a szépséget ezúttal kicsit megerőszakolták.

Passend dazu zeigt sich auch die Gitarrenfraktion variabel und hämmert sowohl schwere Death-Doom-Riffs ("The Field Where I Died") als auch verträumte, an SWALLOW THE SUN erinnernde, Leads ("When I Gave Her My Eden") raus, je nachdem, welchen Gesang es zu unterstützen gilt.

The debut from recently formed Ukraine band Edenian will strike listeners as being incredibly similar to the Gothic Doom Metal approach of Sweden's beauty and beast masters Draconian. With a similar approach to depressive titled and lyrics, some in old english and some in modern, the epic collection of 'Winter Shades' has quite a mentor to live up to if they really want to take cuts and influences from Draconian. Fortunately, Edenian pay their respects through forging a similar sound but not trying to copy everything altogether. The mesh of growls and clean female singing certainly can be comparable on tracks like "Thy Heaven Wept In Mourning," and the heaps of piano is beautiful to behold. However, one thing that Edenian does a bit different from Draconian is throw in clean male singing along with the growling, whereas Draconian just uses spoken poetic passages. Some might argue that this suits Edenian quite well, or just drags them farther down the spiral of 'typical Gothic Doom' as many other bands use this approach all too often such as My Dying Bride. Still, naysayers will warm up to the icy cold riffs of darkness and depression along with the landscaping beauty provided by the keyboards to hold the background when hearing a beauty like "The Fields Where I Died."

Sometimes the female vocals will get their own song here and there. "Embittered Silence" is one of the few to actually be considered a ballad as the female vocals and piano lead most of the track, but later on the male growls come in with the guitars, creating an excellent thunderous contrast but somewhat ruining the beauty that the music originally started with. "Fall The Dusk" shows a strong balance between both male and female vocals; usually it seems like the male snarls are taking most of the verse and interlude sections while leaving the female vocals only to take sections of the chorus. Here, it seems like the roles are reversed, and it is nice to see the other side of the vocals get more time to show off its talents, either in the harsh or clean fashion. The closing instrumental picks up where the opening left off: somber piano backed by keyboards and the same dramatic atmosphere that lets listeners settle down after going through the depressive play. It is a nice touch to finish things up and shows the softer side of Edenian, which will probably invite fans to spin the album a few more times rather than fire once and forget.
