Gut ein Jahr nach der regulären Veröffentlichung ihres Albums "Transient Chronicles" releasen die Chilenen von POEMA ARCANVS ihr jüngstes Werk via BadMoodMan Music, dem Unterlabel der Doom-Veteranen Solitude Productions, noch einmal neu. War der Release via Australis Records seiner Zeit lediglich auf den südamerikanischen Markt beschränkt, erhalten nun auch Europäer die Chance, die Scheibe zu erwerben. Neben leichten Veränderungen im Master des Sounds, die jedoch abgesehen davon, dass alles ein bisschen dumpfer klingt, kaum ausschlaggebend sind, gibt es mit "Errant Souls" exklusiv zum Re-Release auch noch einen neuen Song obendrauf.

Ähnlich wie die Landesbrüdern von MAR DE GRISES spielt das Quartett aus Santiago de Chile eine progressive Form des Melodic Doom bzw. Death / Dooms und kümmert sich, wie anhand dieser Beschreibung schon zu erahnen ist, eigentlich herzlich wenig um irgendwelche Grenzen.
Bereits der Opener "Us Those Half Dead" macht dabei klar, dass es die gewohnt schwer einzuordnende Kost der Chilenen auf die Ohren gibt. Das bedeutet, die Songs variieren zwischen Down- und Midtempo, wobei das Hauptaugenmerk natürlich auf den langsamen Passagen liegt. Im Vordergrund steht die Dynamik, erzeugt durch Wechsel zwischen lauten, aggressiven und leisen, ruhigen Momenten, die einen Großteil der Atmosphäre ausmachen. Plötzlich eintretende Breaks wie beispielsweise in "Fugitive", wo ein Hauch Progressive Rock durch den Raum weht und Gitarrist Igor Leiva (der als Songwriter auch den Großteil der Musik und Texte verfasst hat) eine feine Solo-Melodie zaubert, ehe der Part durch lautere, groovig-anmutende Doom-Elemente in seinen Grundfesten erschüttert wird, sind keine Seltenheit. Hier und da darf dann auch die Doublebass durchgetreten werden, mal schneller, mal langsamer. Über allem liegt der markante, einzigartige Gesang von Sänger Claudio Carrasco, dem es scheinbar spielend gelingt, zwischen beschwörenden Rezitaten ("Us Those Half Dead"), getragenem Klargesang ("Stream of Debris") und Screams / Growls (z.B. in "Omniscient Opponent" oder "Lambs") zu wechseln. Ein weiteres Beispiel für den gelungenen Wechsel der Dynamik stellt "Inquilinos" dar. Eingeleitet durch ein verspieltes Gitarrenriff bricht Carrascos Gesang die Stimmung auf, ehe ein stark verzerrter und finster klingender Bass (gespielt von Neuzugang Pablo Tapia) den nächsten Doom Ausbruch einleitet. Walzend, schleppend, finster. Und auch hier zeigt Carrasco wieder, wie elegant ein Wechsel zwischen tieftönendem Klargesang und finsteren Growls sein kann. "Inquilinos" ist das einzige Stück auf Spanisch, was dem Song ein besonderes Flair verleiht.

Den Höhepunkt des gesamten Albums liefert der mittig platzierte Block bestehend aus "Fading" und "Omniscient Opponent". Der erstgenannte Track entfaltet eine extrem schwermütige Stimmung. Gesanglich wie musikalisch passt hier alles zusammen. Insbesondere Drummer Luis Moya zeigt sein gutes Gespür für ein die Atmosphäre unterstreichendes Drumming. Akzentuiert, unaufdringlich, abwechslungsreich. Schlichtweg stark! Und auch das folgende "Omniscient Opponent" punktet vor allem durch eine dichte Atmosphäre, viel Dynamik und einigen unter die Haut gehenden Gesangspassagen. Der Song fasst das Album dadurch recht gut zusammen.

Neu ist, dass nicht das tolle "Our Little Blood", sondern der Zusatztrack "Errant Souls" den Abschluss von "Transient Chronicles" bildet. Obwohl der Song laut Gitarrist Igor Leiva bereits fast 20 Jahre alt ist, passt er sich gut ins Albumgefüge ein. Sowohl verspielt wie auch düster und vor allem melodisch verfliegen die über 10 Minuten Spielzeit des Stückes in Windeseile.

Erfreulich ist über die gesamte, fast einstündige Spielzeit, dass POEMA ARCANUS sich keine Auszeit nehmen. Sprich: Es gibt kein schwächelndes Füllmaterial. Von vorne bis hinten kriegt man das geboten, was man als Fan von der Band erwartet. Dadurch gibt es wenig Raum für Kritik und doch vermisse ich ein wenig die death-lastigen Ausbrüche des Vorgängers, wo es beispielsweise in "Mars Lullaby" ordentlich zur Sache ging. "Transient Chronicles" präsentiert sich zurückhaltender, beinahe schon besinnlich, verträumt. "Timeline Symmetry" bot in der Hinsicht mehr Kraft, mehr Wut. Nichtsdestotrotz ist auch der neue Output der Chilenen auf seine Art kraftvoll und tragend, dabei jedoch deutlich schwerer zugänglich als der Vorgänger. "Transient Chronicles" braucht anfangs Zeit und Geduld, ehe es sich richtig entfaltet.

Fazit

POEMA ARCANUS feiern ihr 20-jähriges Bandbestehen mit "Transient Chronicles" mehr als gebührend. Das fünfte Album der Band präsentiert sich zwar bedächtiger als der Vorgänger und scheut die richtig kraftvollen Death-Ausbrüche – deutet sie vielmehr immer mal wieder nur an – doch überzeugt das Album mit viel Dynamik und einer durchgängig subtil-dunklen Atmosphäre. Aushängeschild ist hierbei der Gesang von Claudio Carrasco, der mit seiner variablen, tiefen Stimme den Songs sehr viel Leben einhaucht. Doch auch seine Mitmusiker müssen sich nicht verstecken.
Dieser Re-Release ist eine klare Empfehlung für alle Doomster, die die Scheibe bisher noch nicht im Regal stehen haben. Pflichtkauf!

Active since 1992, but active under this name from 1997, Poema Arcanus are Chilean doom death with glaring similarities to the UK Yorkshire trio of the early 90’s, in particular the heavier side of My Dying Bride, however you can also find some similarities in the depths of Candlemass’ material, more so from the guitar sound.

The clean and dirty vocal common of this genre can sometimes be a bone of contention I have to say for myself, however, on the opening track ‘Us, Those Half Dead’, it works out well for my tastes. The clean vocals are much more epic; the keyboards are underlining the overall sound and are an accompaniment rather than a major force. ‘Streams of Debris’ has some almost progressive elements and really low end vocals. Again, when the tune calls for epic, these gents deliver and musically use many different aspects thus not replying on one solitude riff as some of these doom death bands tend to do, another bug bearer of mine. Thankfully, as a result, this improves my level of interest dramatically, even some of the licks and fills take you to areas of Fates Warning’s progressive leanings whilst thoroughly camping themselves within the doom spectrum so there is plenty of depth and variety to pick and choose from.

Moving further into the release, you will encounter relatively long tracks near the 6 minute mark, but that’s just enough, they do not outstay their welcome and retain your attention. ‘Fading’ has a dramatic level of atmosphere and the vocal range is much more extensive as the arrangement itself builds to end or die in a cliff-hanger situation. I did think the track was going to go other places, but it ends quite subdued, that’s clever, that’s unexpected, that makes me want more. The heavy death growls of the following ‘Omniscient Opponent’ delivers with expectation, but also follows the pattern of material released by other bands, the vocal melody at just over the one minute mark reminds me of Anathema’s ‘Judgement’ release, a kindred haunting, a dank but melodic sparseness fully shattered later in the track by a momentous delivery with some really cool soulful guitar tones, I suppose similar too to Katatonia.

Whilst many followers of doom/death may scoff at this release by being similar to other earlier benchmark albums and bands, I find it refreshing, they are not your typical modern doom death, the band dip their toes into the waters of epic metal, doom, and yes the occasional death dirge passage. The guitar is king here and the additional instruments occasionally brought out of the bag add atmosphere, as they should, rather than overbear a clearly thoughtful release and band.

Ce cinquième album de POEMA ARCANUS date en fait de 2012 mais a bénéficié d'une parution par le label russe BadMoodMan à la rentrée 2013.

N'étant pas familier de la discographie du groupe (qui existe tout de même depuis 1992), je constate d'entrée de jeu que nous avons affaire à une formation audacieuse, qui refuse de se contenter de réitérer éternellement les préceptes du Doom Death tels qu'édictés par les MY DYING BRIDE, ANATHEMA et compagnie.

En effet, le Metal lent, lourd et dépressif de POEMA ARCANUS regorge littéralement d'éléments variés qui hybrident totalement le substrat Doom Death. Prenons l'exemple du chant. S'il est majoritairement guttural, il dévie souvent vers des passages plus clairs relevant davantage du Dark Metal ; on relève même des séquences passagères plus écorchées qui évoquent le Black Metal. Là où la lancinance et la répétition sont souvent de mise, POEMA ARCANUS propose une multiplication des séquences au sein d'un même morceau et multiplie les changements de rythmes.

Etant par principe favorable aux groupes qui prônent l'évolution et l'audace, je ne peux que saluer la démarche de POEMA ARCANUS. Par contre, je trouve que le groupe gagnerait à faire preuve de plus de sobriété afin que les séquences aient le temps de s'installer un minimum. On court trop souvent le risque de perdre ses repères. Au moins, POEMA ARCANUS ne laisse pas indifférent...

Doom Death Metal aus Chile ist sicherlich etwas, das man nicht jeden Tag zu hören bekommt. Somit haben POEMA ARCANUS definitiv einen kleinen Exotenstatus inne, denn anhand der musikalischen Ausrichtung hätte man die Jungs wohl eher erst mal in den skandinavischen oder russischen Raum eingeordnet. Aber so kann man sich täuschen.

Die Chilenen veröffentlichen mit “Transient Chronicles“ bereits das fünfte Full-Length-Album und überraschen dabei anfangs mit wirklich angenehm schleppenden Riffs und einer leicht verzweifelten Note. Besonders Sänger Claudio Carrasco überzeugt dabei mit abwechslungsreichen Gesangspassagen und einer angenehm tiefen Stimme, welche sehr gut ins Ohr geht. Ebenso sind seine Growls wahrlich nicht von schlechten Eltern und harmonieren perfekt mit der musikalischen Leistung. Dies wird bereits beim Opener “Us, Those Half Dead“ oder dem folgenden “Stream Of Debris“ klar.

Allerdings haben POEMA ARCANUS im weiteren Verlauf von “Transient Chronicles“ mit einigen negativen Kleinigkeiten zu kämpfen, denn leider kann die musikalische Klasse nicht über die gesamte Spielzeit aufrechterhalten werden. Teils verlaufen sich die überlangen Stücke in songwriterischen Sackgassen, teils machen POEMA ARCANUS den Eindruck, als verlören sie dabei immer wieder das Ziel aus den Augen. Somit kommt fortschreitender Spielzeit fast der Gedanke auf, dass den Jungs auf Dauer einfach die Ideen fehlen. Das ist wirklich bedauerlich, denn die Musiker beweisen gerade in der ersten Hälfte oft genug, dass sie eigentlich den Dreh raus haben.

Mit “Transient Chronicles“ ist POEMA ARCANUS ein solides Werk gelungen, das zwar auf Dauer nicht die anfängliche Klasse halten kann, aber immer noch einiges an Potential besitzt. Wenn sich die Jungs ranhalten, könnten sie sich auch hier als heißer Export aus Südamerika gehandelt werden. Das Potential ist auf alle Fälle da!

Poema Arcanus, being one of the most distinctive Chilean bands at the edge between Dark Metal and Doom / Death metal, gained love of many fans due to unique atmosphere, sincerity, melodies and high production quality.

The very special feature in this release is actually the re presentations of the band's inspired song-writing under an darker, solid and heavy musical background. They actually carry lots of nostalgia for those early to mid 90s days which have been marked as the golden era of Doom / Death Metal.

It is obvious that you would not hear only slow tempo material in here as the mid tempo songs are a trademark in here. However if you are really missing some old school Doom / Death Metal riffing, some really misty atmospheres -thanks to the keyboards- and enforcing combination of clean / melodic and growling vocals, well those are elements that you would widely discover on this album.

I have to point out that the Solitude Productions edition of the album is remastered. So you should expect a better sound compared to the original edition. There is also one bonus track which is one of the best compositions that I have heard from Poema Arcanus lately: "Erant Souls" a ten minute long mournful anthem. Fans of early My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost should not miss this one.

This little beastie sits next to Procession in my listings. Odd as they both play a style of doom. And both come from Chile. And both have these great, haunting, deep, clean vocals. That’s where similarities end, though. Poema Arcanus eschew the epic doom and play a much more doom/death kind of metal but with serious progressive overtones. It’s also their fourth full length amidst a scattering of demos, EPs and singles so you have to assume they know where they are going, musically. It took me three listens to even get the hang of their songs, and when I did I had no idea why I had such difficulty. I think it must be the prog. Or my age.

Let’s take the nine minute plus ‘Iquilinos’ which begins with a kind of gentle building drum and guitar shadowing each other that gives you a sense of trepidation, a gothic curiosity. It whispers beautifully before some wonderful deep, almost religious vocals rise and then are buried in the death style by the slow, crushing riff. This is (unavoidably, to a hack like me) like early Procession gone death metal and very accomplished too but a little dry for me. Then you get the first hints of a quiet style, a little Chilean flourish before an utterly soul rending section which flows perfectly from epic emotional doom into (get this) soft, perfect Marillion then into the death again. It’s a curious mix. Partly successful (the epic, the quiet) partly not (the death).

The following track ‘Fading’ is shorter, and by now sounds like no one but Poema Arcanus but points of reference might be Katatonia with a good sprinkling of Jack Frost in the trembling, deep vocal approach. And a perfectly used out of tune piano (no, it really works). They really are a fascinating band, this Poema Arcanus. The real problem I have, which I suspect many will not, is some of the death sections which seem to lack the core colour of the epic, the prog and the rest. Or perhaps it’s just those other sections are so damned good. ‘Lambs’, which is effectively melodic and proggy death metal with a great quiet section does little for me but sits nicely enough in the running order, if you see what I’m getting at; by this point you know the character of the band and this is simply part of it. And there is so very much to like, and to admire about this Chilean crew.

The score below reflects the problems I have with some of the death sections, a bit of my usual prog aversion, but they do blend and construct the songs so well regardless. Honestly anyone into melodic and progressive death/doom with just a little of the gothic about it really needs to hear this band as they offer them so much. Jack Frost crossed with a progged out death metal band. I’m really going to have to go to Chile and see just what they put in the wine down there.

Rather fine vintage indeed, and one which will take weeks to fully appreciate the variety of flavours beautifully blended into this. Death/doom fans, get your money out.

Il quinto disco dei Poema Arcanus, Transient Chronicles, risale in realtà allo scorso anno, ma l’ingresso della band cilena nel roster della BadMoodMan ne ha reso opportuna una riedizione per evitare che la sua distribuzione restasse limitata all’area geografica sudamericana. Indubbiamente l’operazione si rivela opportuna alla luce del valore di questo lavoro che, pur non raggiungendo vette inarrivabili, conferma il combo di Santiago come una realtà davvero interessante, particolarmente per la volontà mostrata nel non volersi fossilizzare sugli schemi tradizionali del death-doom. Già, perché, nonostante l’etichetta appiccicata ai Poema Arcanus sia proprio questa, Transient Chronicles possiede una forte componente definibile progressive-dark, grazie alla quale i nostri riescono a tenersi alla larga dalla secche nelle quali, inevitabilmente, rischiano di arenarsi gli epigoni meno talentuosi di My Dying Bride e simili. A tale proposito desidero aprire una parentesi: mi è capitato di leggere una recensione, su un sito che non citerò e comunque non italiano, nella quale questo disco veniva definito buono ma purtroppo troppo derivativo ed eccessivamente influenzato da Stainthorpe e co. … ; qui i casi sono due: per scrivere certe fandonie, chi ha affermato ciò non ha mai ascoltato i MDB oppure, molto più probabilmente, non ha sentito più di una volta con un minimo di attenzione Transient Chronicles. Che i maestri inglesi abbiano influenzato chiunque si approcci al gothic death-doom è un dato di fatto incontrovertibile, ma farli diventare l’unica fonte di ispirazione per chiunque rientri in quest’ambito stilistico denota quantomeno una certa superficialità (e non vado oltre). Peraltro, tutto ciò finisce per danneggiare e mortificare il lavoro di band come i Poema Arcanus che provano, meritoriamente, a proporre delle variazioni che possano rendere maggiormente peculiari le sonorità proposte; poi non è detto che questo produca automaticamente risultati esaltanti, ma è necessario che la verità venga ristabilita e che, soprattutto, non si forniscano a chi legge informazioni prive di fondamento. Volendo a tutti i costi rintracciare un parallelismo con qualche band o disco del passato, i Poema Arcanus odierni suonano come una versione doom, quindi più oscura e cadenzata, dei Dark Suns di “Existence” un piccolo gioiello datato 2005 che la band tedesca, in seguito, non è più stata in grado di avvicinare neppure lontanamente: avendo adorato quel disco, sono stato ben felice di ascoltare anche in quest’occasione passaggi tutt’altro che scontati, supportati da un’attitudine progressive e con un’alternanza tra growl e voce pulita decisamente appropriata, capaci di schiudersi sovente in fuggevoli squarci di rara bellezza melodica. Ma il merito del quartetto cileno è proprio quello di non indugiare troppo a lungo su uno stesso riff o spunto azzeccato, provando sempre a rendere il songwriting un flusso in costante divenire, aspetto questo che rende l’ascolto tutt’altro che semplice e che, sicuramente, non consente di liquidare il disco dopo uno o due ascolti. Una certa mancanza di scorrevolezza, alla lunga, è d’altro canto la pecca maggiore che emerge alla fine di quest’ora abbondante di ottima musica, nella quale peraltro non mancano spunti davvero originali come l’episodio epic-dark-folk intitolato Inquilinos, interamente cantato in spagnolo, e brani di grandissimo spessore qualitativo pur nella loro complessità come l’opener Us, Those Half Dead, Fugitive e Our Little Blood; rimarchevoli anche l’opprimente e oscura Stream Of Debrise e il singolo Omniscient Opponent, ipotetico punto d’incontro tra Type 0 Negative e Moonspell e impreziosito da un ottimo lavoro chitarristico. Azzeccata anche la scelta di inserire come bonus track Errant Souls, la riedizione di un bel brano risalente ai primi passi musicali dei nostri (1995), quando ancora si chiamavano Garbage e suonavano, ovviamente, un ben più canonico e tradizionale death-doom. Transient Chronicles è un lavoro di sicuro spessore che consente di collocare a ragion veduta i Poema Arcanus, assieme ai ben noti Mar De Grises e Procession, tra le punte di diamante della scena cilena, autentica culla del doom metal per quanto riguarda il Sudamerica.
