Raventale - проект украинского музыканта Астарота (Deferum Sacrum, Den of Winter), которому одиночество не мешает выпускать под этим названием ежегодно по новому альбому. На этот раз, под занавес 2010 года свет увидел диск «After», который, по задумке создателя, является продолжением предыдущего полноформатника «Mortal Aspirations» и, в то же время, представляет собой вполне самостоятельное произведение, со своей индивидуальной концепцией, которая на этот раз заключается в «размышлении о вечности и её разрушении, о круговороте жизней и существований, об уничтожении этого реинкарнационного цикла самой природой». Богато украшенный золочением буклет данную концепцию поддерживает древнеегипетской тематикой, а также обращением к классике русской живописной школы. В частности, к работе Василия Васнецова «Сирин и Алконост. Птицы радости и печали», откуда на накатку диска закономерно перекочевала Сирин, оставив свою товарку не у дел, ибо о какой радости может идти речь, если музыка Raventale в данном случае сделала еще один широкий и вполне предсказуемый шаг в сторону депрессивного (хотя я бы использовал слово «атмосферного», ибо депрессию у меня «After» вызвать не смог, а вот с атмосферностью у этого материала все в порядке) блэка, не забывая, впрочем, оглядываться на оставленный чуть позади doom с его ритмом погребального катафалка. На этот сдобренный звонкой перкуссией и идущими бок о бок с ним скоростными бластбитами ритм Астарот умело укладывает утробный рык (к чести музыканта надо признать, что даже когда он рычит, тексты песен вполне можно разобрать и за них ему тоже не должно быть стыдно), тяжеловесные, малоподвижные и немного «стоунер»-риффы, параллельно которым извиваются прозрачные тремоло и, чего уж там скрывать, красивые мелодичные партии, в которых и кроется большая часть успеха альбома. Получается довольно нервная, в меру монотонная, и зачастую трансовая (не в смысле «прогрессивного» клубного стиля, боже упаси, а в смысле оказываемого эффекта, здесь особенно показателен трек «Youth») музыка, возрастающее напряжение которой периодически снимают атмосферные клавишные пассажи – словно остановки на стремительном пути, не несущем ничего, кроме потерь и невзгод. Немного шугейза, немного пост-рока и эмбиента, толика меланхолии и крупица давно утерянной красоты - словно смутно знакомый пейзаж на фотографии с эффектом сепии. Альбом действительно концептуальный, все композиции (за исключением безымянного бонуса) воспринимаются как главы одной истории и слушаются, пусть и не всегда с затаенным дыханием, зато с не проходящим интересом. Пожалуй, соглашусь с пресс-релизом, называющим «After» лучшей работой Raventale на сегодняшний день.

Raventale, or better Astaroth, continue to walk your way to your heart's content. Well,

this review could end here and who wanted to seek answers in this new EP from this
ukranian project just go ahead

Once, in 2009, with "Mortal Aspirations" registered a sharp turn in their sound, with
interludes and eclectic themes in a very doomy melody; now, with the proposal "After"
we have a reinforce position for which you can add a few brief forays by moments
truly melancholic – there in the middle of “Gone”, is the best example which serve as a
soundtrack to scenarios gray, loaded with a tundra dotted with snow that will fall to fear,
crushing it scarcely, touches the ground.

This is a job well based on guitars, keyboards with some planing and all this sound
mass supported by a cohesive and strong rhythmic work, giving these five issues a
remarkable strength. Only the label theme of this work is that runs slightly audible to
all, going to get some reminiscences of Black Metal, but always well incorporated in
the composition and more carefully crafted, there is here great place for very complex
musical structures or exercises that pull up to overtiredness songs or some virtuosity,
as often witnessed and which becomes dispensable. This, yes is scattered by the 35-
minute EP, showing that Raventale may, quite rightly, be a very valid proposal, in a
scene where music seems to be slow to benefit from a hype that many years have not
seen.

No glare or innovate, just create good themes, and it gets sometimes.

De eenmansband Raventale uit Kiev in de Oekraïne begint wel een favoriete band van mij te worden. Op dit vierde album heeft Astaroth, de man achter Raventale, echt zijn eigen weg gevonden. De doom/death metal met een lichte black inslag refereerde in het verleden nog teveel aan het oude Katatonia en de sound van Shape Of Despair. Je hoort die invloeden nog steeds maar het geluid op ‘After’ wordt minder gedomineerd door de oorspronkelijke inspiratiebronnen en dat is een mooi gegeven. Het feit dat Raventale uit één persoon bestaat levert veel artistieke vrijheid op en daarom volgen de albums elkaar in een relatief rap tempo op. Gelukkig is de kwaliteit van de muziek in orde, sterker nog de kwaliteit gaat per album vooruit. Er staan vijf nummers op ‘After’ waarvan de laatste titelloos is. Ook het hoesje met een koperachtige gloed ziet er erg mooi uit. Ik ben echt zeer te spreken over deze band en ik kan je alleen maar aanraden om hier eens naar te luisteren als je van melodieuze doom/death in het straatje van Katatonia houdt.

After represents the forth album by this Ukranian based band that is classified as depressive black metal, but shows a small amount of funeral doom in the mass and impact that these slugger tracks have on the listener. You can actually feel your skull rattle as your skin crawls a bit through the progression of the album from the condemning “Gone” through to the final “Untitled” track. The theme behind each song is to convey a chapter in life as one decays through the life cycle, sort of like expressing the concept that the moment after you are born you begin to die, and the album as a whole gives that feeling of a death cycle with a permanent end…no rebirth. The shoe-gaze like melodies really grab at your emotions and the tension makes this listen essential for those who enjoy deep thought and retrospection, especially in the late night/early morning alone.
