Bad Mood Man ist ein Sublabel von Solitude Records, bei dem Alben veröffentlicht werden, die nicht ganz ins Raster des auf extremen Doom spezialisierten Hauptlabels passen. Dort hätten S.C.A.L.P. prinzipiell aber auch unterkommen können. Sie spielen Death Doom der ganz alten Schule, der sehr an die Debützeiten von Anathema und Tiamat erinnert. Gerade dieser heiser-keuchende Gesang wird heutzutage im Doom eigentlich gar nicht mehr verwendet, ebenso wie das eher rockende Tempo einiger Stücke. "Through Eternity" wurde 1997 über das kleine russische Label Rest in Peace Productions veröffentlicht und anno 2009 legten Solitude das Album neu auf.
Das Problem ist natürlich: Die Debüts der genannten Bands gibt es alle schon und sie machten Anfang der 90er mehr Sinn als eine zeitverzögerte Stilkopie im Jahr 2009 macht, zumal S.C.A.L.P. den atmosphärischen Reichtum ihrer Vorbilder nicht reproduzieren können. "Silentium" zum Beispiel ist ein totaler Early-Anathema-Rip-Off, wirkt aber irgendwie beschnitten: Die Sounds sind eindimensionaler, die Keyboards gehen nicht so tief. Da überzeugen die Akustikgitarren von "The Fate Will Never Repeat" mehr, zumindest bevor sie in Lagerfeuergeschrammel überführt werden.
"Through Eternity" ist als Zeitreise für Liebhaber der frühen Neunziger zu verstehen. S.C.A.L.P. sind Epigonen und auch als solche nur gut, nicht sehr gut.

I think it would be interesting to know that S.C.A.L.P. stands for “Sense’s Calming at Dead’s Lament Places”, which is a difficult and weird combination of words. No less complex is their music, which shares the chief of “Solitude Productions” and “BadMoodMan Music”, Evgeny Semenov, in its ranks.
“Through Eternity” is the band’s debut album, which originally was released in 1997, but was re-released several years ago. The release offers about fifty minutes of mostly melancholic and painful music. It is the mixture of Death/Doom and Gothic Metal, fronted by male vocals. Good is that the music is really not sweet, but rather colored with filth and sadness. The tracks remind me of the famous Latvian act, Heaven Grey. The vocals have that “alcoholic voice” effect - quite rough and dirty. The music itself has not so few melodic and lyrical tastes, but in general, does not lack the heaviness either. You can also find some acoustic tracks and interludes; other songs are spiced with clean vocals; faster rhythms; etc. Actually, the album’s variety makes it a little bit hard to listen to. I would prefer lighter, more easy listening music, because much of the variety sometimes just overcrowds the simple things and as we all know, simplicity is perfection.
I also think that the album has that invisible “Slavonic” effect, when the melody and music is definitely influenced by the native musical features and sound. It’s really not bad, as it gives some kind of identification to the band. Some keyboard parts are used, too, but just for second plan intensions. All in all, this is a nice album, without any hard feelings, but also having not many interesting or attractive aspects. But let’s not forget that this music was created almost fifteen years ago... The new releases should tell the band’s real situation, which we will evaluate in the near future.

Я погрешу против истины, если скажу, что дебютный полнометражник орловской группы S.C.A.L.P. вызвал в свое время особый ажиотаж. Скорее можно говорить о том, что прошел он довольно незаметно, тем более, что в 1997-м году сеть лейблов в России еще не успела развернуться и выход компакт-диска для отечественной команды был явлением достаточно редким. Так что тираж альбома ограничился кассетами, а CD-версия, хоть и увидела свет благодаря усилиям тогдашнего хозяина “R.I.P. Productions”, договорившегося с чехами из “Leviathan Records”, но, по понятным причинам, широкого распространения в нашей стране не получила. Между тем, сам по себе материал, представленный на “Through Eternity” был совсем не плох, став своеобразным итогом стремительной эволюции S.C.A.L.P. из достаточно брутальной death-metal капеллы в сторонники мелодично-атмосферного дума в духе “The Silent Enigma” и "Eternity" от ANATHEMA. Так что, переиздание его ремастированной версии, предпринятое ныне “Solitude Productions”, можно назвать вполне оправданным, тем более, что оно стало еще одной возможностью отдать дань памяти трагически погибшему Евгению Рыженку, вклад которого в историю группы переоценить трудно. Впрочем, имея на руках лишь кассетную версию первого издания альбома, трудно оценить, насколько ремастеринг отразился на звучании “Through Eternity”, тем более, что никаких бонусов, как обычно делают в подобных случаях, на альбоме предусмотрено не было, но и за возможность пусть ненадолго, но вернуться в прошлое, нужно сказать музыкантам и издателям «спасибо». А прошлое это, благодаря музыке S.C.A.L.P. вспоминается весьма отчетливо… Во второй половине 90-х годов на российской дум-металлической сцене сложился свой, довольно оригинальный и узнаваемый стиль, проводниками которого стали москвичи MENTAL HOME, R.A.I., DECEPTIVE, брянцы PROMONTORY (чей альбом “The Hill of Hope” также был выпущен “Leviathan Records”) и, в том числе, S.C.A.L.P. В его основе, конечно, лежало увлечение британскими лидерами жанра, но никаким слепым копированием там и не пахло. Понятно, что со своим “Black Art” и контрактом с “Century Media” MENTAL HOME подняли планку на самую большую высоту среди этой когорты, но не стоит забывать и о том, что переиздаваемый ныне альбом орловских музыкантов появился полутора годами раньше. Его мягкое, атмосферное звучание, мелодичные гитарные соло, порой едва ли не бархатные гармонии в сочетании с красивым чистым голосом Рыженка стало неожиданностью для тех, кто помнил, с чего S.C.A.L.P. начинали. Но смена стилистики у орловских музыкантов произошла очень удачно. Музыканты не написали хитовых мелодий и влет запоминающихся рефренов, скорее их музыка выглядит некой пастельной зарисовкой с приглушенными тонами, где большое место уделено инструментальным аранжировкам, которые будто бы обволакивают слушателя, настраивая его на романтическое настроение, а голос Евгения Рыженка довершает эту своеобразную, подернутую легкой дымкой печали, идиллию. Его то доверительно-хриплый полугроул, то мягкий и лиричный тенор одинаково хороши и уместны. Ну а две песни: на стихи Тютчева (“Silentium”) и Ивана Франко (“Who Dared to Sea”) – настолько тонко и точно передают настроение классической литературы, что их хочется немедленно внести в школьную программу. Удручает одно – звучат они отчего-то не в оригинале, а на английском языке. Но таковы были тенденции 90-х. Думаю, что сегодня музыканты их переводить не стали бы. Спустя тринадцать лет после записи, про “Through Eternity” нельзя сказать, что альбом звучит свежо и актуально, нет – он вполне соответствует своей эпохе, но, словно у выдержанного вина, его вкус от времени только улучшился, и услышать его сегодня оказалось даже интереснее, чем тогда, когда он только-только появился на свет.

Circa 3-4 anni fa mi ero giа imbattuto negli S.C.A.L.P., formazione russa che si presentava sulle pagine di Shapeless con il suo secondo album "Blood & Tears". Nella recensione di allora ero rimasto abbastanza soddisfatto dell'opera del terzetto, sebbene ci fossero ancora parecchi punti che non mi convincevano del tutto, sia da un punto di vista vocale, sia per alcune scelte stilistiche e compositive. Adesso perт di tempo ne и passato parecchio e la Bad Mood Man ha deciso di puntare su questi ragazzi, pubblicando ben due loro album: da una parte, infatti, и stato pubblicato il loro terzo album, "Chuzhaya Voina", che troverete recensito qui su Shapeless ancora dal sottoscritto, dall'altra abbiamo la ristampa del primo album del gruppo, ovvero questo "Through Eternity" pubblicato originariamente nel 1997.
Partiamo quindi proprio da questo e dalla formazione del gruppo, leggermente ampliata rispetto a quella di "Blood & Tears": al basso e alla voce troviamo ancora Evgeny Ryzhenock, che purtroppo и deceduto dopo il secondo album, Pavel Peristiy alla chitarra, Alexey Kuznetsov alla batteria e un membro aggiuntivo, Alexey Orekhov, alle tastiere. In seguito poi Orekhov lascerа la band, tant'и che non compare nel secondo "Blood & Tears".
Musicalmente "Through Eternity" mostra una giovane band alle prese con i classici stilemi di quel periodo, dal doom death, al gothic, passando per qualche sprazzo di black metal. Non и difficile quindi inquadrare le coordinate sonore del gruppo, che si rifanno ai vecchi Anathema, in parte ai Paradise Lost, fino a qualche spunto vicino ai primi Opeth. La voce di Ryzhenock, invece, mi ricorda il vecchio abbaiare del buon Johan Edlund (Tiamat del periodo "Clouds" per intenderci). Di per sй, pur non essendo mai una semplice fotocopia del lavoro altrui, l'album non и che brilli di luce propria per originalitа e inventiva, perт indubbiamente l'atmosfera mantiene quell'alone di malinconica nostalgia che si percepisce nelle uscite di quell'epoca: sarа il suono poco levigato, sarа pure per una certa ingenuitа in un genere che ancora non si era cristallizzato, fatto sta che "Through Eternity" non и un brutto lavoro. Anzi, forse ha un pizzico di fascino in piщ rispetto al suo successore, che pure и piщ curato sotto altri aspetti.
Una panoramica sulle composizioni vale la pena di farla, pur senza scendere troppo nel dettaglio: l'album и composto da tre composizioni molto lunghe, "Silentium", "Who Dared To Say" e "Removal", che superano tutte i dieci minuti di durata. Questi sono i momenti piщ interessanti dell'album e non a caso proprio le ultime due sono state poi riprese dalla band nell'album successivo, "Blood And Tears" e poste a chiusura dell'album. Poi abbiamo due composizioni di media durata, "Till The Clouds Fly" e "The Fate Will Nevere Repeat", piщ dirette e accessibili, e poi "Fly Through Eternity" una breve outro strumentale che fa da contraltare a quella in apertura, "Cry Of The Ocean". La band si destreggia discretamente su questo materiale e soprattutto nelle canzoni piщ lunghe puт spendere al meglio il proprio bagaglio, alternando come si conviene al genere atmosfere piщ rilassate, momenti acustici, pesanti riff di matrice doom e accelerate death.
Insomma, non vi sto certo rivelando chissа quale segreto imperdibile, ma tutto sommato una formazione di seconda linea come gli S.C.A.L.P. ha composto in tempi non sospetti un onesto album di genere, sicuramente piщ in linea con i tempi rispetto a molti imitatori di Anathema e compagnia venuti dopo. Quindi potrebbe essere un buon modo per riscoprire un nuovo tassello dell'underground anni '90.

“Through Eternity” no es el nuevo álbum de los rusos S.C.A.L.P. (este ya fue reseñado en nuestras páginas) si no la reedición por parte de BadMoonMan Music de su disco del 97. Tras ese curioso nombre que esconde el significado de “Sense’s Calming At dead’s Lament Places” tenemos a un trio de la ciudad de Orel que lleva desde el 94 editando demos (algo diferentes imagino, ya que la primera de ellas contenía versiones de Napalm Death y Bad Religion).

Siendo sincero, cada vez que me llega un CD de una banda rusa empiezo a temblar. No será porque no tengan buenas bandas, pero es que la mayoría, sean del estilo que sean, suelen tener muy mal gusto a la hora de componer música, no importa si es haciendo Black melódico, Doom Death o Goregrind. En el caso de Scalp, no puedo decir que ocurra exactamente eso. Su Dark Metal melódico, que me recuerda mucho a mi disco favorito de Sentenced (“Amok”), influenciado tanto por el Heavy Metal clásico como por el Rock gótico de unos Fields Of The Nephilim o Sisters Of Mercy, pasando por los Paradise Lost, Tiamat, Anathema y Cemetary de la época media.

Y decía no exactamente porque tampoco es que “Through Eternity” sea para tirar cohetes; la idea de partida no es mala, hay partes muy buenas y melodías que consiguen transportarte muy lejos, pero recaen sobre terrenos que por momentos son demasiado heavies, con unos ritmos muy de “cabalgata”, que no son tan necesarios aquí para crear la atmósfera necesaria, y una presencia demasiado cargada de teclados. No es que sean de ese tipo tan recargante estilo piano, son más bien para aumentar el toque ambiental, pero tienen demasiada importancia en el sonido final, que obviamente debería estar dominado por las guitarras de Pavel Peristy, un buen alumno de Miika Tenkula o Gregor Mackintosh.

Tampoco brilla el disco a nivel de producción, aunque creo que en este caso no es culpa de ellos. A priori los instrumentos suenan realmente bien, especialmente las guitarras, melódicas pero con garra y potencia, y el apartado rítmico acompaña muy bien, pero hay algo en la mezcla que hace que todo suene más opaco de lo que debería, como si le faltasen agudos.

En fin, que al que le gusten mucho las bandas mencionadas en su mejor época igual puede encontrar aquí algo con qué complarcerse, pero tampoco os hagáis ilusiones.

Según su biografía, la fecha de creación oficial de esta banda procedente de Rusia está fijada a finales de 1991, por lo que entre su nacimiento y la presentación del que es su tercer disco "Chuzhaya Voina" en este mismo año han pasado nada más y nada menos que casi dos décadas. Sin embargo, no es este último trabajo el que nos ocupa, sino del que puede considerarse su primer CD oficial, grabado allá por 1997. Y es que este "Through Eternity" ha sido reeditado por BadMoodMan Music de forma paralela al que hasta la fecha es su último lanzamiento.
En un principio parece ser que la banda seguía básicamente los derroteros del Death Metal, quedando plasmados esos inicios en las tres demos con las que se dieron a conocer, pero con este trabajo cambiaron la estructura de sus canciones para acercase algo más a otros estilos y jugar con una mezcla de elementos del Death, el Doom y el Heavy.
No se trata de canciones rápidas, pero si que presentan los habituales cambios en la composición para introducir partes más ambientales con alguna que otra voz más limpia (la mayor parte del tiempo la utilizada es bastante ronca) y ciertos toques que bordean el linde gótico junto con algunas atmósferas de teclado más oscurillas. En sí, es una combinación que a estas alturas tampoco va a sorprender, pero hay que tener en cuenta que estamos hablando de un disco que tiene más de diez años.
Con todo, lo cierto es que al escucharlo se deja notar que se trata de un trabajo de grupo primerizo en el que ni la producción ni la música en sí puede ir más allá de pasable, pero no hay que olvidar que, en principio, son prácticamente los inicios de una banda y en realidad el sonido se aproxima bastante a cualquier grabación de aquella época no tan lejana.
De momento y por comparar un poco he escuchado algo por encima el que es el nuevo disco y, teniendo como añadido que la formación ha cambiado algo, lo cierto es que como es de esperar se notan ciertas diferencias, aunque en conjunto sigue en una línea muy parecida. Pero no voy a adelantarme, ya que eso ha de formar parte de otro artículo. En definitiva, un disco yo diría que solo apto para seguidores de la banda que deseen completar toda su discografía.

Dark Pimousse monte dans sa machine à remonter le temps et se retrouve en 1994. A l'époque, le Doom métal m'était complètement inconnu! Du coup, S.C.A.L.P. n'était pour moi qu'une pratique des Indiens d'Amérique. L'album était à l'époque sorti sur R.I.P Productions, mais BadMoonMan se propose de le ressortir. Pourquoi pas.

Alors, que se passait-il en Russie à l'époque où Cathedral se faisait un grand nom et que le trio anglais de doom/death bousculait les principes?

Through Eternity se caractérise effectivement par de nombreuses mélodies, souvent entraînantes. L'influence heavy se fait ressentir dès Till the Clouds Fly avec un tempo assez rapide pour le genre. Forcément, il faut se remettre dans le contexte de l'époque. La présence du clavier donne un effet aérien à la musique de S.C.A.L.P. et c'est très agréable.

Dans l'ensemble, la voix masculine claire est bien maîtrisée, apportant plus un côté gothique de Doom. Cependant, la voix que je qualifierais de "saturée" est difficilement supportable. Peut être un manque de maturité, on est en tout cas très loin de la lourdeur et la profondeur des voix de doom/death. Il faut donc faire abstraction de cette voix pour évaluer la musique, je vous avoue que ce n'est pas toujours facile. Les passages atmosphériques sont en tout cas les bienvenus pour apprécier le groupe.

The Fate Will Never Repeat est une grande surprise puisque complètement instrumental. Le groupe s'exprime grâce à ses instruments et c'est vraiment bon. Des passages entraînants font place à des moments plus calmes. C'est très aérien et accrocheur. Un autre morceau complètement instrumental : Fly Through Eternity conclut cet album. Morceau encore plus aérien que The Fate Will Never Repeat, la mélodie est très accrocheuse et on se surprend à fredonner cette dernière quelques heures après. Je finis donc sur une bonne impression.

Seule la voix "saturée" rend la musique de S.C.A.L.P. difficile à apprécier ; et vous me direz que c'est beaucoup. C'est vrai... et pourtant, S.C.A.L.P. nous montre ici qu'il a du potentiel. Lui manque sûrement de la maturité ou tout simplement, une autre voix. Un talent quelque peu gâché donc... mais une bonne impression musicale.

Esta es una reedición del primer trabajo discográfico de S.C.A.L.P., una agrupación rusa formada allá por 1991, el cual fue originalmente editado en el año 1997.
"Through Eternity", de él se trata, ha sido re lanzado por BadMoodMan Music de forma paralela al que hasta la fecha es su último lanzamiento (del cual también nos ocuparemos en los próximos días).
El ahora cuarteto, en los comienzos practicaba Death Metal (en esa línea grabaron tres Demos) pero con el correr del tiempo, su música fue mutando para comenzar a conjugar así, elementos del Death y el Doom Metal casi en dosis iguales.
Cobijadas por un aura gótica (lo cual resulta algo extraño si lo que se toca es Death y Doom Metal), las canciones de S.C.A.L.P. parecieran funcionar en media medida, o sea, no terminan de engancharme del todo; pues se suceden a media maquina, bajo el mando de una voz gutural, pero sin explosión alguna.
No se trata de canciones rápidas, pero si que presentan los habituales cambios en la composición para introducir partes más ambientales con alguna que otra voz más limpia (la mayor parte del tiempo la utilizada es bastante ronca) y pasajes de teclados bastante atmosféricos.
Puntos altos pueden ser “Till The Clouds Fly” o “Silentium”, tal vez superando con creces la mediocridad del material, gracias a una contundente base de bajo/batería.
El resto, como insinuaba mas arriba, se debate entre la letanía y la falta de matices. Si tenemos en cuenta que el álbum tiene mas de diez años le dejaremos el crédito abierto al grupo para el review del nuevo disco. Estén atentos…

Ветераны российской дум-метал сцены S.C.A.L.P. уже неоднократно становились гостями наших рубрик DemoZone и CD-Reviews, и вот они снова с нами - на этот раз сразу с двумя релизами: переизданием классического альбома 'Through Eternity" 1997 года и совершенно новой пластинкой 'Чужая Война'. О переиздании особо и сказать нечего - тот же трэк-лист, то же оформление, разве что имеет место быть ремастеринг, датированный 2005 годом, но радикальных изменений в звучании (особенно по меркам 2009 года) он не дал. Новый же альбом - это полностью русскоязычная работа, выдержанная в стиле дарк-метал, с надрывным вокалом и прямолинейными риффами. Работа добротная, но, увы, яркой или интересной её никак не назовешь - это, скорее, подарок преданным фэнам S.C.A.L.P., нежели шаг для завоевания новой аудитории.

Denne russiske trioen har holdt på siden 1991 og det er rimelig å anta at de er ett av Russlands eldste og lengstlevende metalband. «Through Eternity» ble opprinnelig sluppet i 1997, men reutgis nå av underlabelen til Solitude Production. Jeg aner ikke hvor tro de har holdt seg mot originalutgivelsen, men det virker som de bare har trykket opp et nytt opplag, uten å legge til eller å trekke fra noenting. Flott for de som har forsøkt å få tak i originalen uten å lykkes og kjipt for dem som gjerne ville hatt med ekstra stæsj i form av bonusspor, bilder og kommentarer. I et forsøk på å holde beskrivelsen av musikkens kvaliteter på et nogenlunde saklig nivå skal det vedgås at skiva kan ha signifikans for Russlands metallhistorie, men det er også alt. Ferdighetene til de respektive musikerne er det ikke voldsomt mye å plukke på (hvis man er inneforstått med at det er amatører som spiller). Kreativiteten og hva de har valgt å benytte seg av i komposisjonene er derimot er noe helt annet. Her er det intet som stemmer og det låter så ubehjelpelig drit, samma faen hva de prøver seg på. Snører man dette sammen med en relativt tonedøv vokalist, som ikke aner sin egen identitet, blir det fort klart at verden kunne klart seg uten denne utgivelsen. Dette er KUN for de som er meeget spesielt interessert i russiske metalband.
