Crossover

Beauty & the beast metal is a style of doom is that it only goes as far as the vocalists take it. In that case, Tales of Dark… are only halfway there. On the positive side, male vocalist Arpad Takač is Aaron Stainthrope's (of My Dying Bride) doppelganger. Seriously, if you didn’t read the names in the liner notes you would assume Tales of Dark… was Stainthrope’s side project. Some of his thicker baritone passages are truly impressive. His death growls are not astounding, but are nonetheless up to par. However, female vocalist Jovana Karajanovflat’s voice is a flat and tame. She sounds like a run of the mill pop singer sans autotune. Consequently, the listener doesn’t so much savor the contrasts between the masculine and feminine voices as much as they ride the tide of Karajanovflat’s mediocre singing in order to enjoy Takač’s. Yet, this asymmetry throws a wrench in the whole project. The contrasts are never as stark and theatric as they should be, because one actor belongs front and center while the other would be better off as a stagehand. The compositions on this album are fairly average. There are a lot of solid doom riffs backed by quasi-majestic synths. However, little of the music stands out. There are no highlight tracks and no unforgettable tunes. In short, there are a few things to like, but nothing to love. Considering the weakness of the female vocals, this album cannot really be recommended.

The Slavonic power strikes back. Probably one of the best known Serbian bands and the favorite Russian Doom Metal label combine their efforts once again to produce a long expected and no less strong release. Doomsters Tales of Dark... with their second full-length album offer more than an hour of melancholic sadness.
If I did not know that Arpad Takač is the main vocal handler in the band, I would say that Aaron Stainthorpe (My Dying Bride) took part behind most of the vocal parts. It is obvious that the lead singer of the band is greatly influenced by the British genius. But the vocals fit the music as it also has many similarities to the aforementioned legendary band. However, the situation with female vocalist Jovana is not so good. I would prefer to have just male vocals here, because Jovana’s voice somehow does not mesh well with the music. Male voices are perfect in this melancholic Doom/Gothic.
You probably already understand that the band is playing slow, dark and sad, melancholic music, which mostly reminds me of the later My Dying Bride albums. The music has many operatic key parts in the background, and the entire tracks have really good instrumental parts. I would prefer to find faster guitar riffs and some double bass drumming, but it is as it is. Considering the growling of Arpad, the music is something into Melodic Death/Doom, but with the huge Gothic atmosphere and mood.
The quality of the release is really high and the entire production is made on the best note. The music at some moments feels a little bit boring, but in general this is a pretty strong album. I still think that such music should avoid female voices - it must carry more growls, more darkness and heaviness inside. So there is still some space left for perfection even if “Perdition Calls” proves the band’s maturity and professionalism.

». Draconian.

See you soon.

Tales Of Dark hails from Serbia and this is their second release, entitled “Perdition Calls” and believe me they do teach to many bands out there how to play Doom / Goth metal influenced by the masters of the genre , but also adding some of their own personality in the outcome!
The most of the album sounds monolithic, with some “dreamy” parts mostly due too Jovana’s female vocals and some acoustic parts in the compositions.
The whole “Beauty And The Beast” type of singing sounds really great and fits the bands music. My personal opinion is that Arpad must be one of the few singers that his voice sounds so close to Aaron’s (My Dying Bride) and Juhani Palomäki’s (Colosseum) but I don’t know if this happens on purpose, but to be honest I really don’t care, this isn’t important at all.
In Conlcusion “Perdition Calls” features many good compositions, many good vocals (female and male) and also some great atmosphere plus a few speed up tempo changes… the decision is yours…

Solitude Productions have specialized in releasing a whole bunch of rare and underground metal releases from Eastern Europe. One of those is a Serbian band Tales Of Dark, a group of six musicians delivering their second album entitled Perdition Calls.

Their sound is very much a mix of doom/gothic/death metal with both male and female vocals of one of the best vocalists in Serbia, Jovana Karajanov. Most of the nine songs on this album are of semi-length but one never really gets bored as there’s a big variation and diversity in their music. The music and their rare blend are extraordinary and so is the production. Booklet is filled with fascinating imagery while all the lyrics are also printed inside. It seems that the band and their label have thought of just every detail in order to make this album a pleasure for the listener – something they’ve achieved.

The best thing is that, apart from a few My Dying Bride similarities, this band runs its own agenda, never really copying other bands from the over-crowded Gothic female-fronted scene. Contact info www.talesofdark.org or www.myspace.com/talesofdark

Jos olisin kuullut Tales of Dark... -yhtyeen musisointia kansia näkemättä, olisin voinut hyvinkin kuvitella kuuntelevani vanhempaa My Dying Bridea. Serbialainen, vuonna 2001 perustettu bändi onkin parhaimmillaan suoranaista pastissia tuon gootahtavan doom metal -yhtyeen luomistyöstä.

Alan fanittajille suosittelen tutustumista kuitenkin.
