Slowrun is a Finnish band playing a kind of music that is hard to describe. Even after two spins in my player, I’m still a bit confused and don’t know what to think of their music. Prologue is the title for this release, and it contains six tracks that are all instrumental. And here’s the first problem; even though I appreciate and acknowledge their instrumental skills, I simply found this album hard to enjoy. Lengthy tracks that are all instrumental, repetitive and with no lyrical content is a bit tiring and monotone for me. In other words; it is well written album with perfect arrangement but something is missing for me. It fails to keep me interested and entertainment despite of its melancholic and complex beauty.

On the other hand one of the things I really applaud is the fact that Slowrun manages to build some comforting atmospherics and a perfect production where all the instruments are equally present and where one can enjoy this guitar-driven sound. It eventually throws up a few unexpected surprises, but it’s just far between them.

Having said all of the things above, one must also recognize their ability and wish to create songs that are deep and not over-rushed. I would never dismiss the fact that Prologue has the potential to grow and provoke different emotions, it just didn’t happen to me yet.

Every time I try to value the whole work of “Solitude Productions”, I begin to look at it through greedy glasses. I can’t understand from where these people get so much time and ideas that embrace the publishing from Doom/Gothic genres to various experiments as atmospheric Black Metal, and all that could be labelled as slow and melancholic. Total respect! Actually, “Slow Burn Records” is just one of their sub-units, dealing with a slightly different music than the main publishing office. Exactly because of that reason the CD of the Finnish project Slowrun “Prologue” is brought out under the flag of this sub-label.
It is likely that you know that I’m against that entire Post-Rock and Post- thing in general. I just can’t stand how it is threading into the heavy music stage. Well, Post-Rock has existed as a genre for a while before that, so each band that is appearing in my range of vision is being treated with a sceptical look and ironic “one more band on the peek” attitude. For this reason the most of Post-Rock bands are absolutely the same to me, though I cannot say they’re not interesting. These Finnish men get in this wide circle. But another mysterious thing about this genre is that most of the bands play instrumental music. Well, I understand that the basis of this creativity is atmosphere, sensation and mood. Would the vocals lessen such effect? It is still a riddle to me; maybe Slowrun sometime will answer this…
Talking about “Prologue”, it is quite boring. The CD is extremely melancholic, slow, but quite good for background music. With respect to my witticisms provided here earlier, this album could be suitable for current fans of Alcest. As well as for all those who admire Post-Rock, if you don’t look for something heavy in music. In my opinion, it is just an ordinary Post-Rock project. You can correct me if I’m wrong.

Während unser Alltag immer häufiger von Hektik und Stress bestimmt wird und Augenblicke der Ruhe und Entspannung zu einer kostbaren Seltenheit werden, hat es den Anschein, als laufen die Uhren in der Abgeschiedenheit von Finnland noch ein klein wenig langsamer. Diesen Eindruck erweckt zumindest die Formation SLOWRUN mit ihrem aktuellen Erstlingswerk namens ”PROLOGUE”, dessen sechs Kompositionen den nahezu perfekten Soundtrack für stille Momente der Erholung liefern, in denen der Hörer alles um sich herum vergessen kann und stattdessen tief in sphärische Klangwelten eintaucht.

Das skandinavische Duo erschafft diese aus sanften Post-Rock Arrangements, in denen sich sehnsüchtig anmutende Gitarrenmelodien in vielschichtige Songkonstrukte einfügen, die sowohl von weichen Bassspuren, die sich dezent mit der übrigen Instrumentierung verweben, allerdings auch hin und wieder eine etwas dominantere Rolle einnehmen, als auch von einem abwechslungsreich bedienten Schlagwerk geprägt werden. Trotz aller Variation sichert dieses lediglich die rhythmische Begleitung, ohne sich in den Vordergrund zu drängen. Während Stücke wie ”Ripples And Time” oder ”Escapism” sich einzig derartiger Stilmittel bedienen und auf diese Weise wunderschöne, genretypische Passagen erschaffen, die zum Träumen verleiten, zeigen sich ”On A Fading Road” oder der 10-minütige Abschlusstrack ”Void” zudem von ambientartigen Elementen durchzogen. So kreieren Synthesizer düster angehauchte, aber dennoch volle und warme Soundcollagen, die sich geschickt mit den melancholischen Leads verbinden und das Gesamtgefüge ein wenig auflockern können. Bemerkenswert ist, dass es sich bei ”PROLOGUE” um ein vollständig instrumental gehaltenes Werk handelt, das während seiner Laufzeit kaum an Reiz verliert. Zugegeben, SLOWRUN treten ein wenig auf Stelle, sind die sechs Titel der Platte doch alle nach dem selben Muster konzipiert und bedienen sich somit nur einiger weniger Ideen, die von Song zu Songs lediglich leicht abgeändert wurden.

Dies ist jedoch nicht weiter tragisch, entfaltet ”PROLOGUE” seine entspannenden Wirkung doch bestens, indem es den Hörer aus seinem Alltagstrott herausreißt und für die Dauer einer dreiviertel Stunde alles um sich herum vergessen lässt. Somit liefern SLOWRUN ein sehr spezielles Werk ab, das sich zweifelsohne nur für gewisse Momente eignet, bei Anhängern von Kapellen wie GROWN BELOW oder FADING WAVES jedoch durchaus Anklang finden wird.

С чем у вас ассоциируется post-rock? Стеклянный звук гитар? Тремоло с дилэем? Повторяющиеся монотонные гитарные рисунки? Чуть тоскливая атмосфера? Всё это есть в дебютном альбоме финского дуэта SLOWRUN. “Prologue” – это вечерняя прогулка в одиночестве под осенним дождём в течении 45-ти минут. Здесь присутствует и вкус, и качество, и налёт меланхолии, т.е. всё то, чего чаще всего и ожидаешь от подобных записей. И подчеркнутая монотонность записи здесь тоже по-своему оригинальна. Музыка варьируется от атмосферного пост-рока до воздушного эмбиента. Как для дебюта – весьма впечатляющая работа. Как по музыке, так и по оформлению. Скажу даже больше, из всей пачки релизов от Solitude Productions присланных на рецензии за последние месяцы, этот диск стал свежим глотком свежего воздуха. Рекомендую всем ценителям хорошей музыки, и не важно, какой стиль вы предпочитаете.

Schemat “Prologue” jest prosty: miała powstać płyta stylowa i taka według wszelkich kanonów panujących w świecie post-rocka. Instrumentalna, operująca pewną monotonią, ale przy tym melodyczna, klimatyczna i pełna przeskoków emocjonalnych. Czasem buzującą silnymi uczuciami, a czasem kojąca. Taka do medytowania, ale i pobudzająca do myślenia. Wszystkiego jest tu po trochu w każdym z sześciu długich i rozbudowanych kawałków. Fiński zespół brzmi właściwie tak, jak wielu im podobnych, bo język takiego przestrzennego grania jest uniwersalny na całym świecie i można to uznać za ich atut, jak i wadę. Przepis w tym konkretnym przypadku jest klarowny i powszechnie znany, bo cóż nowego można zaoferować trzymając się kurczowo pewnych schematów i ram? Choć z drugiej strony co złego jest w tym, że muzycy SLOWRUN nagrali materiał rozbudowany, nienagannie skonstruowany i wiążący wszystkie znajome fanom instrumentalnego, gitarowego post-rocka elementy w logiczną, dobrze brzmiącą całość? Za przykład mogą służyć właściwie wszystkie utwory, ponieważ o ile zaskoczeń większych się tutaj nie uświadczy, to w sześcio-, ośmio- czy nawet dziesięciominutowych długasach umieszczono zarówno gitarowo-rytmiczne zrywy, mozolnie budowane linie melodyczne, jak i akustyczno-minimalistyczne improwizacje. SLOWRUN trzyma się pewnej skonkretyzowanej estetyki grania akordami, nakładania na nie kolejnych warstw, gwałtownego lub stopniowo wyciszania, wybrzmiewania pojedynczych tonów, powracania do poprzednich motywów i wariacji na tenże temat. Takie jest już „Approaching”, ale odnosi się to też „On a Fading Road” i praktycznie każdej z kolejnych kompozycji. Może za wyjątkiem bardzo nastrojowego, wzbogaconego partiami pianina „Glow In Isolation”. Pulsująca i nie do końca przewidywalna rytmika dopełnia całości tych małych gitarowych orgietek, które na pewno zadowolą fanów takich formacji, jak GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT, LONG DISTANT CALLING i MASERATI, a nawet COCTEAU TWINS. Dla kogoś natomiast, co niespecjalnie trawi instrumentalne płyty spod znaku przestrzennego rocka, zabrzmi to jak pozbawione ładu i składu, nudne plumkanie. Już podsumowując, nie mamy w przypadku „Prologue” do czynienia z czymś nowatorskim, ale na tyle solidnym i interesującym, że pewna część słuchaczy może bez cienia zażenowania zapoznać się z propozycją fińskiej formacji.

‘Prologue’ è il debut album del duo finlandese Slowrun, post rock è il sound proposto sulla scia di band che hanno tirato fuori tutta la meraviglia che il genere in se può esprimere, vedi Red Sparows, Mono, God Is An Astronaut, o nelle parti meno potenti dei If These Trees Could Talk, fanno capolino in ogni angolo delle sei traccie che lo compongono, fatte le debite proporzioni, naturalmente. Le melodie dove si intersecano e scorrono le note del disco sono gradevoli ed efficaci come nella song “Escapism” in cui si evincono tutte le potenzialità del duo in questione. Nel complesso l’album lascia intravedere una propria timida luce, ma ancora emotivamente debole e che non riesce in nessun modo a conficcare le sue spine nei tessuti dei nostri cuori, come se fossero ancora piccole e verdi e prive di quella passione in cui scorre vividamente il sangue del post rock.

Una pallida luce di post rock…

Hasta la fría y boscosa Finlandia parece que llegó la moda de las bandas Post-rock y Post-Metal que copa la mayor parte de la inspiración para bandas emergentes y remodelación de otras no tan nuevas y es que, como si de pólvora se tratase, el fenómeno Post lleva tres o cuatro años con nosotros sobresaturando la escena y perpetuándose como género aperturista para mucha gente que jamás se hubiese acercado a géneros más clásicos como el Metal, el Black, etc. Ese crédito hemos de dárselo pues es innegable la cantidad de fans nuevos (veremos si se quedan o no) de los sonidos más agresivos que han atraído las mezclas surgidas de la combinación con este.

Slowrun cumple con casi todos los requisitos del libro del Post-rock siendo una banda instrumental, con el añadido de ser sólo dos miembros activos, lo cual añade cierto misterio y encanto nórdico, de temas dinámicos con una longitud superior al standard y que sirve perfectamente para tener de fondo en cualquier actividad tranquila a la que queramos poner un punto musical. Y es que señores, aquí reside la principal virtud de la banda, saber ser una banda sonora del momento que queramos.

Tanto la estructura del disco (estructuras relativamente parecidas entre las canciones) como el formato y artwork más bien minimalista invita a descartar cualquier estudio pormenorizado de la obra y centrarse al final en lo que transmite el conjunto: dinámicas guitarreras que llevan a los famosos clímax que vuelven a desembocar en paz para volver a crear y así sucesivamente a lo largo de los 8 temas que forman este ‘Prologue’ ya que carecería de sentido y justicia para la aventura sonora de Mika y Niklas.

Los ejemplos quizá más destacables y adecuados para analizar este disco y ejemplificarlo de manera clásica se encuentran en los tracks 2 y 6, “On a Fading Road” y “Void” en donde, con algo más de acierto y elementos más llamativos, continúan con su aproximación al género instrumental más bien minimalista aunque elegante y sobrio, haciendo permanentemente continua su orientación hacia el Ambient y los sonidos más estereofónicos en su idea del género. Cabe destacar positivamente el acabado final de la obra, totalmente acorde a la propuesta y más que satisfactorio jugando a favor de la sensación espacial y paisajística que el dúo finlandés nos propone.

En resumidas cuentas, cualquier navegante poco asiduo del Post Rock ambiental saldrá huyendo despavorido por la falta de aparente emoción, pero para toda la cantera de fanáticos del género, quizá sea un disco más para decorar sus estanterías y sus reproductores. A nadie engañan ni lo pretenden, música de fondo para amenizarnos el momento. Y a nada más deberían aspirar pues lo hacen correcta y elegantemente.

Каким же привлекательным может быть ночной дождливый город! Расплывчатый свет фонарей, гром и мигающие молнии, грязный, мокрый асфальт, на котором пятнами разбросаны большие лужи – это картинка из детства, навевающая ностальгию, в которой нам всегда хотелось потопать по воде и побегать под проливным дождем. Так искренне, захватывающе и романтично. Примерно так выглядит обёртка и начинка инструментального альбома “Prologue” в исполнении финнов Slowrun.
В своём творчестве дуэт сочетает несколько музыкальных жанров, от инструментального пост-рока до эмбиента. Ни капли экстравагантности, ни капли вычурности или пафоса, но не простой как три копейки, “Prologue” – размерен, легок и податлив, он подстроится под вас в любом виде и как вы этого захотите. Его аморфное состояние меняется в зависимости от вашего настроения. Грустный и одинокий, но такой комфортный, когда вам просто хочется прогуляться в тиши, без посторонних людей и понаблюдать за переливающимися ночными пейзажами мегаполиса, остаться наедине со своими мыслями и тревогами, иногда этого вполне достаточно, чтобы найти верное решение нависшей проблемы, которая является причиной бессонницы вот уже несколько ночей. Здесь можно отдохнуть от суеты и наполнится спокойствием.
В чем мне всегда льстят инструментальные альбомы – так это в отсутствии лирики. Иначе говоря в подобных случаях – ничего лишнего. Не стоит пытаться уловить что-то в текстах песен, не надо стараться интерпретировать словесную подачу материала через визуальные образы. Не надо ничего, только слушать и слушать. А образы так или иначе посетят вас, достаточно просто закрыть глаза.
Скрипучие гитары, рассыпающиеся риффы, слоем наложенные друг на друга, дерзкое фортепиано, утонченные ударные, партии баса в форме волн, то резко нахлынивают, то медленно стихают, но всё понятно без слов. Тонкий, эмоциональный поток струится сквозь расщелины акустики и электрогитары, чередующиеся попеременно.
Но самое интересное кроется в названии релиза – “Пролог” – это явный намёк на продолжение. В конце концов, по известной схеме после пролога следует кульминация и эпилог, иначе говоря – завязка, развитие действия и завязка. Так что ждём. Хотелось бы добавить – новых открытий, но скорее всего в этот раз обойдемся без них. В любом случае, релиз стоит потраченного на прослушивание времени, хотя бы просто для релаксации и снятия накопившегося напряжения.
В общем, инструктаж такой: заводите мотор автомобиля, включайте диск в магнитолу, можно не на полную катушку, а слегка приглушив, и отправляйтесь в путь по ночному мегаполису – ощущений испытаете через край. Но обязательно не на высокой скорости, не зря же финны назвались Slowrun – медленный бег. И мягко, мягко плывите по опустевшим улицам… Релиз предоставлен Slow Burn Records.

I like drawing a random item off my pile of albums-to-be-reviewed and play it on my system without ever listening to it before, having my mindset become that of a clean slate and a let a new beginning unleashed… I let the album surprise me — no preconceptions, misconceptions or other debris of the intellect — and thus I become a leaf floating upon the streams of music: what happens, happens; que sera, sera…
…Hence appeared Slowrun, and had played its unheralded beauty _Prologue_ for my ears, and all I could do is close my eyes and float on ether; for this is one of the most gentle and beautiful shoegaze / atmospheric / post rock albums out there. Purely instrumental, yet one that speaks with its vibrant and colorful guitars and their many tones, shapes and flavours, all portrayed exquisitely, finely tuned to pierce through even the coldest of human emotions, ignite passion and joy and warmth even in the midst of the black-hearted amongst you — this album needs no human language but that of music; the language of angels, language of the sentiment, language of the soul.

And so they play, these angelic presences in the form of guitar strings, some piano keys, a set of drums and a series of simple yet effective compositions, carrying on their fragile backs the burden of inherent melancholy; the pulsating heart of the album, its very core.

The result is a breathtakingly beautiful album, surprisingly interesting and profoundly relaxing; the alpha and the omega of emotional, thoughtful and unique form of rock music showcasing its most beautiful facets and its sheer power over us, humans.

_Prologue_ is a transcendental experience, echoing through its frequencies the likes of Klimt 1928 (minus the vocals, of course), The Angelic Process (minus the extreme edges of the latter) and even the Dutch shoegaze prodigy Hypomanie, who has released a couple of brilliant albums in the last couple of years.

These Finnish masters of the craft, Slowrun, have provided us with one of 2013’s highlights in the form of this little artful, masterful gem of an album.

The Pit of the Damned

Post-rock, Finlandia e due musicisti alla continua ricerca del suono perfetto. Ottimi ingredienti per ottenere un bell’album, ma il terreno è sempre arduo e pieno di avversità nel duro mondo della musica. Creare, ispirarsi e fare qualcosa di nuovo è da sempre il chiodo fisso del musicista che vuole esprimere la propria arte, quindi facile comprendere tutto il lavoro che sta dietro a una produzione come ‘Prologue’. Suoni perfetti e arrangiamenti equilibrati per il post-rock strumentale che soffre di limiti se si scegli di stare nel genere. “Approaching” è la traccia introduttiva e non ha nulla da invidiare a God is an Astronaut, Russian Circles e Sigur Ros. Tutto è al posto giusto, come le chitarre spaziali, le esplosioni ritmiche alternate a break che creano dinamicità ed evoluzione che l’ascoltatore apprezza. Ma se si è amanti del genere, subito il pensiero va ai classici e ci si chiede: ce n’era bisogno? Forse no se anche i Slowrun decidono di calcare gli stessi passi, ma forse si se questa è una prova generale per confermare che hanno le carte in regola e da qui iniziare un percorso artistico personale. Anche “Escapism” denota cura e amore per il suono e sicuramente un live con uno spettacolo di luci degno di nota guiderebbe l’ascoltatore verso profondità oceaniche avvolte da un dolce silenzio. Oppure verso un infinito spazio stellare illuminato da soli lontani che aspettano solo di incontrare forme di vita ignote ancestrali. Che sia un viaggio verso il basso o verso l’alto, i Slowrun devono continuarlo senza perdersi, ma creando loro stessi la via che li potrebbe far brillare di luce propria. E non di riflesso come spesso accade.
