W tej materii koniecznie trzeba też wspomnieć o bezbłędnej narracji autorstwa słynnego Dana Swano w "All I Will Leave Behind".

Wśród ośmiu utworów na "The Shortest Way" jedynie instrumentalny "The Wanderer" zmieścił się w niecałych pięciu minutach.

Podsumowując myślę, że "The Shortest Way" powinien trafić w gust wszystkich fanów doom metalu z inklinacjami w stronę death metalu oraz post metalowego klimatu zniszczenia. Dobry materiał.

Evadne is another one of those Doom bands that has worked its way onto Solitude Production's label, and from Solitude's reputation, hints at the idea that these guys might be pretty good. After a self-released debut album which garnered little attention and therefore making them a hidden gem, their sophomore effort 'The Shortest Way' capitalizes on their strengths and puts forth a very solid Doom-Death effort. Opting for more epic tracks and a grandiose sound, the production is less fuzzy, but still weighty through the guitars and their slow, melancholic chords that just drag on and on at times, but thankfully are varied by keyboards that almost sound like choral singing. The opening half of the album takes some getting into, especially if one is not used to sitting through seven minutes of tracks. Aside from the keyboards which add a strong gothic atmosphere to the music, most veteran Doom listeners are going to wonder if things will pick up. The trick lies in "This Complete Solitude," which features the first look at the clean vocals on the albums. Very rare, but very powerful, the low, crooning voice is just the seduction of mind to keep Doom listeners hooked during the quieter parts which often include piano, another highlight of adding classical instruments to clear the weight of the sound.

The longest track on the album is also probably the most beautiful. "All I Will Leave Behind" is the quinessential Doom Death track. Featuring slow, melodic single string sections, haunting female vocals that, like the male clean ones, sound like a faded whisper on the edge of hearing and just completely relieve the bellowing growls that will probably still be ringing from moments before. This combination of beauty and beast in an atypical sense- usually this typically is characterized by louder clean female singing and male growling- but Evadne add this sense in the music, which makes it much more compelling. Unfortunately the following tracks don't really live up to the magic. The instrumental "The Wanderer" just feels like typical Death Doom without the vocals and "Further Away The Light" carries on with the typical guitar and growl fashion similar to the first track; not the most complex or interesting. The closing "Gloomy Gardens" thankfully ends things on a high note with more use of the desirable clean male vocals that listeners have probably been waiting for for some time, and it casts a happy, yet depressing end upon 'The Shortest Way.' The route is dark, but enjoyable, as Death Doom should be.

Aina ajoittain kuulee pientä itkeskelyä ensimmäisten Swallow the Sunin levyjen tyylisen ilmaisun perään. Nyt tuon aikakauden ystävät voivat huokaista helpotuksesta, sillä espanjalaisen Evadnen kakkoslevy istahtaa juurikin tämän tyyppiseen melodisen ja hitaan melankolian sektoriin. The Shortest Way esittelee kypsän ja tyylitajuisen yhtyeen, jonka otteissa ei liialla toivolla juhlita. Dan Swanön miksaama ja masteroima levy soi kuulaan massiivisesti ja tukee raskaanherkkää ilmaisua juurikin oikein soundillisin ratkaisuin.

The Shortest Way on maittava paketti jyrääviä kitaroita, usvaisia suvantoja, rouheaa korinaa sekä sieltä täältä pilkisteleviä komeita melodioita. Yksittäisbiiseinä The Shortest Wayn kappaleet, etenkin upea All I Will Leave Behind, ovat likipitäen euforisia kokemuksia.

The Shortest Way on puhdasoppisinta maalailua, jota tästä tyylisuunnasta on hetkeen kuultu ja levyn soisikin löytävän kuulijansa. Siinä määrin toimivasta tapauksesta on kyse.

¿Los Swallow the Sun españoles?

Evadne hails from Spain and with this second full length and the mixing and mastering, as well as occasional vocals, done by Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity, Novembers Doom, Bloodbath) you should already be expecting high quality sound and song structural dynamics, which is exactly what you get with The Shortest Way.

The vocals remain mostly throughout as a decipherable gruff throaty growl, sometimes almost spoken as if narrating a story, but the main thing is that the aggressiveness is omnipresent yet never overwhelming to where the lyrics are mushed into useless ooze. Clean vocals do appear on “One Last Dress for One Last Journey”, but only as a brief introductory and outro appearance, and even then though majority of the song is melodic and dreamy with some dense riffing and piano underneath to really bring out the emotional undertone, the riffs remain anthemic and pulsing as this 8-minute song flows in a fluid stream creating its own path along the surface like a stream of blood.

Due to the quality of the musicianship, the brutality infused with complex melodies, and the dominant presence throughout the album as a whole it’s just not plausible to cover it in a written review. Do not expect gothic metal clichés, cinematic and grandiose vomit inducing grandstanding, or even post-rock/post metal meandering, just expect something morbid and sincere with an array of emotions that is both doom and death metal worthy in sound heaviosity and somehow still almost “pretty” (?) in a macabre way. DO NOT overlook The Shortest Way as abysmal droning mixed with post-rock, whether you are a fan of the extreme doom styles or not you WILL want to at least hear Evadne!

Most of the reviews are extremely positive, in fact I only saw one negative one, but as was his fatal flaw, never go into an album with preconceived notions, especially if the style is not in your taste. If I hadn’t stepped back and let this one come to me over the last two months, I’d never have realized its merits. To some people all black metal is the same, the same goes with extreme doom styles and any other style really, so at least take my word for it “on faith” and hear for yourself. If it was indeed mundane and standard I wouldn’t spend the fucking time reviewing it, it’s not like I don’t have a thousand other worthy reviews to get through and can afford to literally piss away time down the sewage pipes. It’s also not overloaded with emotional pandering and grabbing at the listener for pathos, it’s just genuine and intense AND creative.

Examples of mundane, exhausted and predictable, and sometimes nauseatingly so would be the SP release of Edenian Winter Shades, I just cannot swallow it even if I’m pinching my nose and holding my breath as I pass it down my throat quickly.

Russian label Solitude Productions is one of the most, if not the most active Doom Metal labels around nowadays, they released good stuff but also some mediocre CDs along the way, but with these Spanish Doom Death Metallers Evadne they have really managed to bring to our attention an excellent effort. Evadne's second album to date, "The Shortest Way" will appeal to both old-school (the My Dying Bride type of grave atmospheres) Doom Death Metallers but also to the new wave of followers (Swallow The Sun type of growls and experimentation on guitars). Adding some female vocals here and there was a great choice, and there's also a clean vocals passage sung by Dan Swano himself (he also mixed and mastered the product). A perfect balance between growls and clean vocals, atmospheric guitar leads, subtle but effective keyboards, all in all this band reminds me of Mourning Beloveth, with the difference coming in shape of melody, Evadne uses much more melody creating some heavy, emotional atmospheres. Thumbs up for this band, recommended!

Apt music to justify the mood felt in the Spanish economy, but hey-ho Evadne's sophomore album delivers the goods in eccentric form, mixing melodic metal with the depressive Doom / Death Metal which in itself is a plethora of different styles and stance. The five-piece who hail from the autonomous region of the Valencian Community bring out the darkness in their land and curse the listener with a sensational outcry. Bringing together a collection of different elements, the five-some are sure to go onto greater things and achieve higher recognition as what is billed as potentially Spanish Metal album of the year.

If there were a "starter album" for extreme doom, not necessarily the best, but perhaps the most accessible, Evadne's latest might be on a short list.

The Shortest Way is perhaps most amusingly named given the band were talking about their upcoming release at the 2010 installment of Dutch Doom Days.
A scant two years later, we have Evadne's The Shortest Way.

The sound is pretty much impeccable. When you have Dan Swanö twiddling the knobs, it all but guarantees a certain professional level of sound quality. The whole dynamic package of the album - ranging from clean tones and vox with symphonic/keyboard swathed passages to doomish onslaught of growls, distortion and power chords sounds absolutely wonderful.

The band are indeed talented and have created a really good follow-up to The 13th Condition. They do display a grasp of both the tenets of doom (slow, crush, growl, distort, punish the listener) as well as the importance of dynamic song construction. Don't sit on any one thing too long. Switch things up every once in a while. Buck the tempo. Toss in clean elements. Incorporate female clean vocals to counter the growls.

The strength of this album is also perhaps its key drawback in preventing a higher rating.

The sound is so swell that it almost detracts from the music. Doom is based on evoking negative emotions, with the more extreme the doom, the more extreme the mood and presentation. The Mary Poppins "a spoonful of sugar helps the doom go down" approach perhaps acts to mute the impact. It doesn't go quite as far as While Heaven Wept's "mocha frappucino" girlie drink coffee, but "one lump plus two" makes it more accessible to those outside the Marcel Kool Doom Kids Klub … and perhaps too saccharine for some inside.

But that's nitpicking, really. While it won't auto-kill all plant life in 10 meters upon hitting play like other extreme dewm acts, it perhaps is likely to lull the listener with sugar-sweetness and thus infects them with doomabetes and possibly heart disease as well.

That's a good thing, amirite?

It's a good listen, and especially so for those looking for a gateway drug to more punishing and harsh doom.
