Another debut album from a Russian band featuring musicians who spent a long time at Russian heavy stages. Although the band exists for more than ten years playing gigs and contributing to compilations, only now they felt the opportunity to present carefully selected, recorded and mastered compositions to the audience. Graveflower feature their unique sound and style even playing old school doom death metal referencing to classical My Dying Bride sound of «Like Gods of the Sun» period.

Долго же эта группа шла к своему дебютному альбому - почти 10 лет. Музыканты из Екатеринбурга нарезают doom/death metal старой школы, черпая вдохновение, прежде всего у англичан MY DYING BRIDE образца 1996 года. И всё вроде бы хорошо, но только есть одна большая проблема - материал представленный на диске абсолютно не цепляет и не вызывает никаких эмоций. Если первый трек “White Noise” в принципе сделано довольно неплохо, то вот остальные композиции вызывают лишь скуку и уныние. На кого рассчитан этот альбом - непонятно. Хотя любители жанра наверняка купятся на красивую рекламу и приобретут диск без всяких раздумий.

Pure Nothing Worship

Russian Graveflower exists since 2003, and in 2012 their first album was released. "Returning To The Primary Source" contains seven compositions in the length of 47 minutes. Graveflower plays old school death doom metal in the vein of old My Dying Bride and similar bands. The album doesn’t bring anything new, nothing exciting, but it’s worth listening to. Highlight of the album is the eleven minute song "Falling Leaves" which has a great riff combined with a deep growl. A big letdown is the boring production which killed the essence of this album. Unfortunately, I believe that to many, this is going to be just another doom band recycling old riffs and atmosphere. As I said, this is the debut of this Russian band, and I believe the band will grow more in creating the metal’s saddest genre. We wait for the second album hoping that it wont be another 9 years until it’s out.

Kiedyś, przy okazji którejś z recenzji doom czy doom/death metalowych kapel napisałem, że prawie wszystkie czerpią tak czy siak z dokonań MY DYING BRIDE, który zaszokował świat swoją muzą na samym początku lat 90-ych i trwa do dzisiaj w świetnej formie. Faktem jest, że wiele różnych zespołów, chcąc nie chcąc, nawiązuje do ich twórczości, a jeden ze świeższych przykładów to GRAVEFLOWER. "Returning To the Primary Source" to - wypisz wymaluj - album, jaki nie mógłby powstać bez tej inspiracji, którą przesycone są tutaj dźwięki, ale także wokal, jakże imitujący momentami Aarona Stainthorpe'a. Można wystosować wobec Rosjan zarzut, że aż za bardzo to słychać, bo owszem, niektóre kawałki dosłownie dałyby się wkleić (przynajmniej ich fragmenty) do któregoś z wydawnictw z logo MDB, ale z drugiej strony nie dziwi mnie chęć dorównania mistrzom, choć droga do tego daleka i kręta, o czym jeszcze za moment napomknę. GRAVEFLOWER pełnymi garściami czerpie z bogatej, twórczej studni Anglików, wchodząc w rozwiązania tak typowe dla pierwszych kilku ich krążków, bo i dosadnych growli nie brakuje, a i melancholijnych zaśpiewów również. Wadą zasadniczą tego albumu jest jednak nie to zdecydowanie podobieństwo do Brajdów pod względem wokalnym czy w ogóle stylistycznym, ale to, że brną do nikąd, co jest słyszalne zwłaszcza w drugiej połowie tego wydawnictwa. Ciągłe, chroniczne wręcz kopiowanie ciężkich riffów, imitowanie przeciąganych nut i sprzężeń, a nawet całych wątków ze znanych wszystkim fanom płyt MDB. Nie ratują tego akustyczne fragmenty, pojawiające się tu i ówdzie, bo to za mało, by zainteresować tych, co szukają tutaj grupy mogącej w przyszłości powieść ten nurt w jakieś mniej znane regiony. Mimo to, jeśli uważacie, że 'lubicie te piosenki, które już znacie', to ten album w pewnym sensie wpasuje się w Wasze gusty. Osobiście zastanawiałem się długo nad finalną oceną, ale nie mogę niestety dać więcej niż mocno naciąganą szóstkę. Dźwięki, owszem, mi się podobają, lecz przyszłości dla GRAVEFLOWER nie widzę barwnej.

Doom/death metal from Russia. Well, actually I’m very glad with this album! Without any doubts this album should be one the best doom/death metal albums ever made in ex-USSR area (please note – NOT BEST, but ONE OF the best). From the very start I was sunk deep into “old-school” doom/death metal, means this album was made under big influence from the bands which made this made early-mid ‘90s! I even will not write any band-names, coz you should know what the bands were great on the doom/death metal scene those far years… The whole album sounds really impressive and freezing; you’ll hear real doom/death metal, where doom metal sadness and negative feelings are crossing with massive death metal rhythms, made with slow melodies and good vocals… Highly recommended for fans of MY DYING BRIDE firstly!

Zu mehr als einer knapp halbstündigen Demoveröffentlichung namens ”PRIMORDIUM” im Jahre 2004 hat es die Formation GRAVEFLOWER aus dem Städtchen Jekaterinburg, gelegen im Uralgebirge, während ihres knapp zehnjährigen Bestehens bisher nicht bringen können. Wenngleich sich das Quartett regelmäßig bei Konzerten rund um den russischen Heimatort präsentiert, sollte der interessierte Hörer doch auch ab und an mit einem Tonträger bedacht werden. Ändern soll sich dies nun mit dem längst überfälligen Debütwerk ”RETURNING TO THE PRIMARY SOURCE”, welches acht Jahre nach ”PRIMORDIUM” über das Label Solitude Productions erscheint und insgesamt sieben neue Tracks bereit hält.

Ohne Höhepunkte in einem kaum ansprechenden Gesamtpaket

Auf ihrem ersten Langspieler bewegen sich GRAVEFLOWER in der Schnittmenge von melodisch angehauchtem Death Metal und keyboardlastigem Doom Metal, wobei die Quintessenz der Songs zumeist im Verborgenen bleibt. Zwar folgen die einzelnen Stücke einem durchaus erkennbaren roten Faden, vermögen aber nicht die unterschiedlichen Elemente sinnvoll miteinander zu verknüpfen und somit Steigerungen einzubauen, um auf diese Weise Spannung aufkommen zu lassen. Stattdessen pläschtern Kompositionen wie etwa ”Rain In Inferno” nur seicht vor sich dahin, ohne die zweifelsohne vorhandenen gelungenen Momente wirklich gekonnt in Szene zu setzen. So gehen sowohl Klargesang als auch nett arrangierte Gitarrenriffs ohne Höhepunkte in einem kaum ansprechenden Gesamtpaket unter. Erschwerend hinzu kommt der zumeist völlig überflüssige und bisweilen sogar störende Einsatz des Tasteninstrumentes. Wo hier durchaus wirkungsvolle Akzente mit düsteren Sounds erzeugt werden könnten, werden fast unscheinbar einzelne Töne eingestreut, die die Atmosphäre der Platte im Grunde kein Stück voranbringen.

Viele gute Ideen, wie etwa in den beiden Instrumenalstücken ”Just For A Moment” und ”Rain Without End” bleiben weit hinter ihrem eigentlich Potential zurück, da es GRAVEFLOWER schlichtweg verpassen, sie auf die Richtige Weise zu verpacken.

Nach einer sehr langen Wartezeit können die Russen mit ”RETURNING TO THE PRIMARY SOURCE” nur ein eher durchwachsenes Debüt vorweisen, dass den nachgeeiferten Vorbildern MY DYING BRIDE oder auf KATATONIA nur bedingt nahe kommt. Es bleibt abzuwarten, ob sich GRAVEFLOWER im nächsten Versuch steigern können und die guten Ansätze sinnvoller verarbeiten oder erneut auf unbestimmte Zeit im Nichts verschwinden…

Il mondo doom non arresta la sua creazione di nuovi act e la Russia con assiduità disarmante ne offre una svariata gamma. Dopo nove anni dalla loro nascita è arrivato per i Graveflower il turno di far sentire la propria voce.
La formazione sovietica tramite la connazionale Solitude Productions ci fa pervenire il debutto "Returning To The Primary Source", a quanto pare non preceduto da nessun'altra release, dev'essere di moda buttarsi a capofitto nel tentativo di "spaccare" al primo colpo, peccato che spesso e volentieri tocchi poi far notare quanto sia fondamentale crearsi delle basi solide per non cadere nei più semplici degli errori.
Formalmente abbiamo a che fare con una formazione preparata e che sa dove vuole andare a parare la botta, il problema di fondo è che lo sa anche sin troppo bene. In pratica una volta inserito il platter abbiamo a disposizione sette tracce che a dirla tutta, neanche troppo velatamente, fanno il "verso" ai My Dying Bride sia per strutture che impostazione vocale del cantante Vladimir Semenischev che nel growlare come nell'esibirsi in un voce pulita è evidentemente influenzato dalla ingombrante presenza di Aaron Stainthorpe. Oltretutto non è un caso che loro stessi citino come punto di riferimento un album degli inglesi, "Like Gods Of The Sun", probabilmente il più "controverso" della discografia della band proveniente dalla terra d'Albione.
Sono strani invece gli armonici alla Machine Head che si possono udire in "White Noise", di compagnia ma non esaltanti gli sprazzi nei quali si palesano seppur in maniera non distinta lievi accenni alla melodia opprimente in stile Mourning Beloveth. Il tentativo con aperture acustiche di disseminare uno stato d'animo maggiormente melancolico interrompendo la letargia del doom/death di base come avviene nell'introduzione di "My Turn", "Falling Leaves" e nelle brevi strumentali "Just A Moment" e "Rain Without End" rende al meglio nel pezzo più conciso e atmosfericamente dotato: "Rain Inferno", nel quale è palpabile una velata positività che contrasta l'andare costante malinconico, il canto in "clean" è probabilmente la miglior arma di Vladimir.
Tutto ciò non oltrepassa ancora la sufficienza piena, essendo "Returning To The Primary Source" troppo poco per andare oltre, in una parola: stereotipato.
La conoscenza del genere c'è, le qualità individuali non scarseggiano, i mezzi sono presenti, speriamo che in un futuro non troppo lontano i Graveflower decidano di liberarsi della dominanza caratteriale dei My Dying Bride sulla loro musica provando non dico a esser personali in toto ma almeno a uscire da una "possessione" che è sin troppo ammorbante, virando con il songwriting in altre direzioni. È doveroso quantomeno tentare di allontanarsi da questo estremo già sentito.
Un ascolto di "Returning To The Primary Source" è consigliato a tutti coloro che amano il genere, lo stereo di certo non ve lo sputerà fuori, così come del resto sarà difficile che trovi una continuità nel girarvi. Si prova per non dimenticare che i Graveflower esistano e "potrebbero" sicuramente fare di più, diamo loro fiducia.

Chiudete gli occhi e lasciatevi cullare dalle note dolenti di “My Turn”, brano che dopo un intro acustica lascia spazio alle struggenti clean vocals di Aaron Stainthorpe …; poi riapriteli e passate direttamente alle note informative relative alla band e scoprirete che il cantante in realtà risponde al nome di Vladimir Semenischev e che, come i musicisti che lo accompagnano, non proviene dalle brumose lande albioniche ma dalla ben più lontana Ekaterinburg (Russia).


Questo tipo di introduzione serve a far capire quanto il disco dei Graveflower sia debitore nei confronti del sound che i My Dying Bride hanno contribuito a creare nella prima metà degli anni ’90 e, a conti fatti, tutto questo finisce per costituirne sia il maggiore pregio sia il principale difetto.
Non c’è alcun dubbio, infatti, che la band russa riesca a riportare in vita in maniera efficace e appropriata le sonorità che hanno contraddistinto pietre miliari del doom/death come “Turn Loose The Swans” o “The Angel And The Dark River” ma, d’altra parte, l’adesione al modello originario in certi frangenti è talmente fedele da sfiorare il plagio.
Pertanto riesce difficile fornire un giudizio obiettivo e soprattutto slegato da quanto appena osservato: chi, come il sottoscritto, ama in maniera incondizionata questo genere musicale, non può evitare di farsi coinvolgere dalla bravura di Vladimir e soci nel comporre brani al rallentatore, dal mood romantico e decadente, e l’ascolto ripetuto di questo lavoro trasmette sensazioni in gran parte positive. Detto questo, e ribadito che il doom, per sua natura, non si presta a troppe divagazioni o commistioni stilistiche, è innegabile che dai Graveflower per il futuro ci si attende quanto meno uno scostamento più deciso dai canoni espressivi che la band dello Yorkshire ha dettato due decenni orsono.
Alla fine il verdetto per la band russa è di assoluzione, sia pure con tutte le riserve già esposte, con le seguenti motivazioni : 1) “Return To The Primary Source”, se spogliato di ogni ingombrante termine di paragone, è un bel disco, considerando tra l’altro che si tratta del passo d’esordio. 2) Se i My Dying Bride decidessero un giorno di tornare alle sonorità e all’intensità emotiva degli esordi, immagino che la cosa sarebbe accolta con favore dalla maggior parte dei fans, quindi il fatto che qualcun’altro li abbia in qualche modo anticipati non mi pare così deprecabile ….

Das Quartett aus Jekaterinburg bietet dem geneigtem Hörer bereits seit 2003 ihren Doom-Death Metal. Ganze neun Jahre hat es also gedauert bis die Russen ihren ersten Longplayer via Solitude Productions rausbringen durften. Eigentlich eine Ewigkeit um fünf Songs und zwei Akustikstücke zu kreieren, aber gebracht hat die lange Wartezeit dann leider doch nichts. Ihre Kompositionen klingen leider allesamt total blutarm und können selten die nötige Atmosphäre aufbauen von der der Doom-Metal nun einmal lebt. Zu allem Überfluss wird sich dann bei einigen Tracks auch noch schamlos bei MY DYING BRIDE bedient. Song zwei "My Turn" klingt astrein wie eine B-Seite aus der "Turn Loose the Swans"-Zeit. Man beachte hier den Zusatz "B-Seite" denn GRAVEFLOWER sind nicht in der Lage an die alten Glanztaten der Engländer heranzureichen. Über bleibt eine Doom-Death Scheibe, die heute keiner mehr braucht und im Niemandsland verschwinden wird. Schade eigentlich, denn die Ansätze sind zu erkennen und Potential haben die Jungs auch. Mal sehen was die Zukunft bringt, aber der Stoff auf "Returning To The Primary Source" reißt mich definitiv nicht vom Hocker.

Upadła wielka dynastia Romanowów, upadł wielki Związek Radziecki, ale doom metal nie upadnie. Przynajmniej ten made in Russia.

Oto bowiem w Jekaterynburgu uformował się zespół pod imperialistyczną nazwą Graveflower, który w 2012 roku zadebiutował albumem pt. "Returning To The Primary Source". W sumie nieco ponad trzy kwadranse muzyki rozpisanej na siedem utworów autorstwa Władimira Semenisheva (wokal, bas), Dmitrija Solodovnikova i Andrieja Pilipshina (gitary) oraz Danila Aleshina (perkusja), a także zaproszonego gościnnie Jewgienija Oskina (klawisze). Nie mam zamiaru ukrywać, że pomimo kilku wpadek, ten krążek urósł w moich oczach do miana jednego z najciekawszych tegorocznych debiutów.

Momentami usłyszałem tu Catherdal, czasem też Candlemass, ale płytę zdominował własny styl Graveflower. Rosjanie zaproponowali bardzo rozbudowane, niemalże progresywne kompozycje o niemiłosiernie wlokącym się i przytłaczającym klimacie. W muzyce zawartej na "Returning To The Primary Source" wiodącą część stanowią ciężkie riffy Solodovnikova i Piliphshina wspierane wprawną ręką perkusisty Aleshina. Nie ma na debiucie Graveflower zbyt wielu solówek gitarowych i innych urozmaiceń, ale jeśli się już pojawią to jako zagrywki najwyższej próby, choćby znakomite solo gitarowe w "Rain in Inferno" czy liczne partie klawiszowe zaproszonego Oskina. Materiał jest spójny i jednolity, nie ma tu miejsca na fragmenty, które ujmowałyby coś z jego bardzo wyraźnego klimatu. W ten nastrój sprawnie wpisał się wokalista i basista Semenishev, który zaprezentował bardzo szeroką paletę wokalną: od growlingu przez czysty śpiew ku bardzo wysokim zawijasom. Nie wiem czy to tęsknota za nowymi nagraniami Cathedral, czy już szaleństwo, ale momentami w głosie wokalisty da się wyczuć manierę Lee Doriana.

W warstwie lirycznej moją uwagę zwróciły liczne pytania stawiane przez Semenisheva, który w swej refleksyjności powątpiewał nad sensem istnienia: "I see the falling leaves, because of seasons change they die, do you feel the breath of death, that makes them turn to dust?". W tym jak i wszystkich innych aspektach całość materiału brzmiałaby naprawdę wyjątkowo gdyby nie kilka schematów, w które zabrnęli muzycy Glaveflower. W większości utworów można znaleźć standardowy wstęp na gitarze akustycznej w otoczeniu klawiszowych efektów, a część kawałków została oparta na kilku niepotrzebnie powielonych riffach.

Tym niemniej przy okazji "Returning To The Primary Source" wypada stwierdzić iż dzięki temu, że istnieją takie zespoły możemy być spokojni o przyszłość doom metalu. Czy oto narodzili się nowi wybitni twórcy tego gatunku?

Wederom een doom metal-band op Solitude. Hopelijk loopt mijn abonnement daarop nog even door. Uit Rusland zelf wordt ditmaal Graveflower de release van het debuutalbum, Returning To The Primary Source, gegund.

Waar heb ik dit toch eerder gehoord? Ah, ik weet het al en vis meteen de albums van My Dying Bride uit de kast. Ja inderdaad twee druppels water. De riffs, de trage ritmesectie, de melancholische keys en grunts afgewisseld met de cleane klaagzang. Dit is dus doom voor de liefhebber van een dosis melancholie en romantiek. Dit viertal doet het overigens prima, daar niet van, maar origineel wordt het haast nergens. Of je moet het stukje halverwege The Falling Leaves, waar kort wordt geflirt met wat jaren zeventig en meer traditionele doom, willen noemen. Als je een nummer wilt luisteren om een indruk te krijgen kies dan voor My Turn, in het genre echt meer dan prima uitgevoerd.

Lekker voor tussendoor en voor een debuut echt wel oké. Echter hoop ik dat ze een meer eigen pad gaan bewandelen op een volgend album.
