Sorti originellement en 2011, Transcient, le premier album de Lachrimatory, a été réédité en août dernier par le label russe Solitude Productions, permettant ainsi à la formation brésilienne de faire bénéficier à sa musique d'une diffusion plus large que ne lui avait permis l'autoproduction il y a trois ans.
Le groupe officie dans un Doom Death aux accents assez old-school et au rythme assez lent, tendant parfois légèrement vers le Funeral. Si les morceaux se permettent assez régulièrement des accélérations et autres montées en intensité (on citera en exemple le très bon "Twilight"), on remarquera que celles ci restent toujours très mesurées, les musiciens brésiliens ayant clairement fait le choix de privilégier l'atmosphère plutôt que l'efficacité. Cela étant, les changements de rythme précités n'en sont pas moins suffisamment bien conçus pour captiver l'auditeur, les compositions, très inventives et plus riches qu'elles ne pourraient en donner l'impression au premier abord, offrant leur lot de bons moments à ce niveau là.
On appréciera également le travail effectué au niveau des vocaux, les alternances entre growl et chant plus hurlé s'accordant avec justesse aux évolutions de la partie instrumentale, notamment dans les séquences les plus torturées, quelques touches de chant clair et de passages parlés faisant en outre apparition à l'occasion pour un résultat souvent particulièrement plaisant.
Mais l'album ne serait pas ce qu'il est sans ses arrangements au violoncelle et au clavier, le premier en particulier étant un des gros points forts de ce Transcient. Très utilisé tout au long de l'album, il marque par sa subtilité et sa variété, tant il excelle à évoquer sans jamais sombrer dans l'excès différentes émotions et atmosphères, se faisant tour à tour élégant, mélancolique et menaçant. Secondé par des cordes, des chœurs et d'occasionnelles notes de piano apportés par le clavier, il joue sur les contrastes et les variations de rythme, et est pour beaucoup dans la qualité de l'ambiance de l'album.
Car de manière générale, celle-ci est vous l'aurez compris une des principales qualités de la musique de Lachrimatory. L'univers dans lequel nous plonge le groupe est un labyrinthe gothique combinant l'intime et le grandiose, la beauté et l'angoisse, le flamboyant et le sinistre. Il convint tout particulièrement par son équilibre entre ces différentes orientations, et par l'habileté avec laquelle il alterne entre ces dernières. Un titre comme "Clarity" en est un bon exemple, passant aux alentours de la cinquième minute d'une séquence mélancolique ne manquant pas de finesse à un passage bien plus inquiétant..
Enfin, on avertira que la production pourrait sembler un poil trop étouffé à certains, surtout en comparaison avec les standards habituels du label à ce niveau là. Cela étant, celle-ci correspond bien à la personnalité et à l'atmosphère de l'album et donne à ce dernier un certain cachet pas désagréable.
C'est donc un Doom Death de grande classe que nous propose Lachrimatory comme premier album. Inspiré, riche et subtil, ce Transcient est une belle surprise, qui laisse présager du meilleur pour la suite..

Régóta követem figyelemmel az orosz Solitude Productions kiadványait. Rengeteg jó és még jobb funeral doom anyaggal örvendeztették már meg a műfaj kedvelőit, persze akad szép számmal a gyengébb eresztésből is. Az utóbbi időkben talán kicsit több is. A Lachrimatory azonban az előbbi tábort erősíti bemutatkozó lemezével.
A brazil származású zenekar 1999-ben alakult, nem túl aktívak, hisz a most bemutatásra kerülő Transient a legelső teljes albumuk. Azért ennél egy kicsit árnyaltabb a kép: mind a 2002-ben megjelent Sanity to Decrease, mind a 2006-os Anamnesic Voices Phenomena demók terjedelmüket tekintve akár nagylemezek is lehetnének. Míg az előbbi megszólalása erősen demós jellegű, az utóbbi anyagon már ez sincs jelen. A Transient eredetileg 2011-ben jelent meg, nem hivatalos CD-R formában. 2014-ben döntött úgy a Solitude, hogy az anyag megérdemli a hivatalos megjelentetést, ezáltal egy szélesebb kör számára is tálalva azt. Jól döntöttek ez ügyben, hiszen így hozzám is eljutott ez a nagyszerű zene.
A Lachrimatory zenekar legénysége jelenleg öt főt számlál, két gitár, vokál-szinti, basszus és dob eloszlásban. A csellót kezelő Maiko Thomé 2011 óta nem tagja a bandának. Saját meghatározásuk szerint doom-death zenét nyomnak atmoszférikus funeral elemekkel tarkítva, ez egyébként többé-kevésbé helytálló meghatározás.
A hat számos anyag bő egy órán keresztül szól a lejátszóból, megfelelve ezzel a műfajban elvárható dalonként tíz perces átlagnak. Elöljáróban kiemelném a lemez megszólalását. Rendkívül sötét és kellemesen hátborzongató hangulatot teremt az ötletes keverésből adódó, egyből felismerhető hangzásvilág. A főszerepet a cselló kapja, a két gitár ennek hátterében szolgáltatja a vészjósló alapokat: halkan dörmögő torzított gitár és torzításmentes akusztikus pengetés együttese húzódik a vonós réteg mögött, kiválóan eltalált dobhangzással alapozva meg a borongós nótákat. A basszus visszafogottan az alapokra szorítkozik, a habot pedig a szintetizátor és a nem túlzó módon jelenlévő hörgés jelentik. Keresem a megfelelő kifejezést, talán az lenne, hogy az egész olyan ízléses. Ha minden ilyen jó, akkor persze jogos a kérdés, hogy miért „csak” 8,5 pont. Egy dolog a nagyszerű hangulat, a kellemes megszólalás, de ott vannak ugye a témák. Tényleges dalszerzésben még van hova fejlődnie a brazil csapatnak. Elsőre nehéz is eldönteni, hogy csak nehezen adják-e magukat a dalok, vagy tényleg lehetne helyenként kissé merészebb is az ötletelés. Tény, hogy sokszor meg kell hallgatni az anyagot, hogy egyenként megragadjanak a számok és addigra már azért nyilvánvalóvá válik, hogy a zene egész egyszerűen nem elég izgalmas. Megfogalmazható a kérdés a másik oldaláról közelítve: nem túl sok akkor a 8,5 pont. Ez szubjektív, nekem nem, számomra mindig a zenék hangulata volt a legfontosabb elem, az pedig itt olyan erős, hogy egyáltalán nem zavar az innovatív dalötletek hiánya. Dalonként nincs sok értelme elemezgetni az albumot, karakteres, de homogén zene, minden tételben megtalálhatóak a dalra jellemző apró finomságok, de egyik sem tűnik ki a sorból, pozitív illetve negatív tulajdonságaival.
A szövegeket tekintve nincs sok bemutatni való, a szokásos depis doom-death hablaty, gimis koromban nagyon komolyan vettem ezeket, ma már inkább csak megmosolyogtat. Az alábbi idézet remekül érzékelteti, mire gondolok:
"Beyond this tomb of powerlessness
The abismal fear of my existence
Translate the opaque vision of my death
In the empty of this room"
Külalakjában a lemez hozza a szokásos Solitude szintet: booklet fényes papíron, szövegek a borítóban stb. stb. A borítókép nem változott, az eredeti artworkot használták fel az újrakiadáshoz.
A jelenlegi tomboló nyárias időjárás nem kedvez az album hangulatának, de érdemes a doom kedvelőinek belehallgatni a cuccba, hisz az ingyen megtehető a bandcampen és 4 dollárért le is tölthető a veszteségmentes változat.

O surgimento de novos rótulos faz muita gente torcer o nariz, mas o fato é que na maioria das vezes servem para especificar uma proposta, mesmo que não seja algo inédito. O chamado Funeral Doom Metal, muito em voga atualmente na Europa, leva a desolação do Death/Doom típico do começo dos anos 90 para uma dimensão mais depressiva com andamento, geralmente, ainda mais lento. Por apostar em um estilo que não tem tanta afinidade com o público brasileiro, Transient praticamente ficou engavetado por alguns anos. Gravado entre 2009 e 2010, o Lachrimatory só conseguiu lançá-lo oficialmente em 2014 através de um selo russo, que também já lançou outras bandas brasileiras do mesmo estilo, como Abske Fides e HellLight. A fusão entre beleza e angústia de proporções byronianas, cujo maior elemento dramático é a inusitada e intensa presença do violoncelo, diferencia o grupo paranaense. A sofisticação ainda é complementada por teclados majestosos, como na faixa-título, que surpreende a cada passagem com arranjos meticulosamente compostos, além de vocais de apoio muito bem inseridos no meio da música. E Twilight, a mais “agitada”, abre espaço para vocais limpos e pedal duplo. A maioria das músicas ultrapassa onze minutos, mas o senso de composição apurado do sexteto prende a atenção e impressiona com constantes variações. Com a saída do violoncelista Maiko Thomé (que também foi responsável pela produção impecável), fica difícil imaginar como soarão essas músicas ao-vivo, mas o talento dos outros músicos não deixa suspeita quanto à manutenção da qualidade em trabalhos futuros.

Après deux démos sorties en 2002 et 2006, les brésiliens de Lachrimatory sortaient en 2011 un premier et très bel album à la fois mélancolique et sombre. Ce tout premier opus de six titres est magnifiquement orchestré. Franchement, depuis leur création en 1999, on peut dire que ça valait le coup d’attendre cette réédition de cet album sorti à l’origine en 2011. Même si « Transient » est un album très dark sur le fond, je ne le trouve pas dépressif comme le sont beaucoup d’albums de Death Doom Metal. « Transient » est plutôt un album empreint d’une certaine nostalgie. Ávila Schultz qui est également au chant, a fait un travail assez faramineux aux claviers. Pendant que les guitares de Tiago Mendes Alvarez et d’Alexandre Antunes tapissent un véritable fond de toile avec de grosses nappes sonores faites avec des distorsions très graves et très sombres, grâce aux effets magiques du clavier, un violoncelle soliste vient se percher sur le devant de la mélodie et le tout est magnifique. Plusieurs simulations d’instruments viendront construire une véritable mélodie tout au long des 6 titres de l’album. Outre le violoncelle, nous y retrouverons l’harmonica chromatique, des cuivres, des chœurs, ainsi que toute une orchestration Ne nous y trompons pas. Bien que nous soyons dans un univers plutôt obscur et lent, les cassures de rythmes de Michael Siegwarth à la batterie ne se font pas attendre et avant que certains breaks ne retombent dans un quasi- silence où flotte une atmosphère acoustique le rythme peut subitement s’accélérer donnant naissance à des riffs particulièrement violents. Du coup, ces parties où le silence retombe prennent quasiment des aspects de rock progressif. Tout change, la voix qui soudain se fait claire alors que dans le reste du morceau elle est terriblement sépulcrale. Les saturations laissent place à une clarté de jeu particulièrement limpide. La basse abandonne son épaisseur pour devenir légère. En fait, chaque titre est un long voyage imprévisible au sein duquel on se laisse facilement embarquer. Aucun titre ne se ressemble vraiment et c’est sans doute ce qui fait la grande richesse de « Transient ». Les mélodies y sont absolument magnifiques et donnent à cet album une dimension d’infini et d’espace. C’est une très belle œuvre, je ne peux que vous encourager à découvrir ce tout premier album de Lachrimatory sorti à l'origine en 2011.

Российский лэйбл Solitude откопал в бразильских джунглях еще одних представителей печальной ветви металла (напомним, что ранее лэйбл познакомил нас с бразильцами Helllight). LACHRIMATORY основательно печальны и меланхоличны, но при этом довольно предприимчивы с музыкальной точки зрения - их материал достаточно насыщен и мелодичен, благодаря чему помимо погружения в атмосферу волей неволей следишь и за развитием композиций, за способом выражения музыкантами эмоций. Как мне кажется, поклонники групп вроде My Dying Bride должны обратить пристальное внимание на этот бразильский коллектив, ему есть что предложить слушателям.

LACHRIMATORY основательно печальны и меланхоличны, но при этом довольно предприимчивы с музыкальной точки зрения - их материал достаточно насыщен и мелодичен, благодаря чему помимо погружения в атмосферу волей неволей следишь и за развитием композиций, за способом выражения музыкантами эмоций. Как мне кажется, поклонники групп вроде My Dying Bride должны обратить пристальное внимание на этот бразильский коллектив, ему есть что предложить слушателям.

Doom Metal and Brazilian temperament don’t seem to be very compatible with each other, given that South America is known for its crazy tempered metalheads. Stereotypes and skepticisms aside, Lachrimatory is alive and kicking since the year 1999. It took quite some time for the band to finally accomplish “Transient”, their first full-length. Prior to their debut, the band managed to record two demos. The first one “Sanity Decrease” in all aspects was not a very impressive effort of rather typical and predictable music. The second demo “Anamnesic Voices Phenomena” took four years to materialize even if it was just a complete re-recording and re-arrangement of the first one with added two new tracks. It has shown some evident improvement and also revealed the fact how much the band loves the cello and how heavily it relies on its parts, which is not very uncommon in this genre. The debut pretty much follows the same path, but delivers more solid and rather well nurtured compositions with sensible dynamics. “Transient” sounds very accessible and pleasant to the listener’s ears, but does not become too nice while maintaining a good taste in melody.
The general atmosphere is well achieved though for such a type of Doom Metal, Lachrimatory sounds like quite a typical one (which is not necessarily bad) in this respect and has all those very common elements to the genre. The Brazilians do not thread new ground, but it looks like they stand steadily where they are now.

È bello assistere alla pubblicazione di un progetto che ha fatto molta gavetta e produsse al tempo il suo disco di debutto in proprio. I Lachrimatory, sestetto doom metal insolitamente brasiliano, rilasciarono infatti "Transient" tramite canali indipendenti nel 2011, dopo un paio di demo autoprodotte uscite nel decennio precedente.
L'etichetta russa Solitude Productions — nella sua continua ricerca di nomi di valore principalmente in area doom — si è imbattuta nel lavoro della band originaria di Curitiba e ha fatto decisamente centro, pubblicandolo nell'agosto 2014. La copertina ci accoglie in una dimensione domestica ma opprimente, la prigione che sembra delinearsi nella traccia d'apertura "Seclusion". L'intero libretto presenta oscure foto di particolari di arredamento, finestre forse aperte sull'esterno, sulla condizione umana che mette a disagio la voce narrante. A livello contenutistico ci troviamo in una zona abbastanza nota, la scomparsa di una persona amata è tema ricorrente in molti dei versi, così come l'insicurezza nei confronti della realtà. Purtroppo, la scrittura dei testi soffre qualche imprecisione linguistica e refuso che avrebbero potuto essere rivisti in fase di ripubblicazione.
Tuttavia, per quanto riguarda la musica siamo di fronte a un lavoro di alto livello: i sei sanno benissimo come gestire le atmosfere, le durate, lo spazio dato ai diversi strumenti, i pezzi non sono banali e offrono sempre qualcosa di inatteso (come in "Deluge"). Interessante anche la presenza di un vero violoncello (suonato da Maiko Thomé) in formazione. La voce di Ávila Schultz, che si occupa anche delle tastiere, predilige il growl ma non disdegna passaggi puliti ("Void"), mentre i due chitarristi Alexandre e Tiago aiutano ogni tanto con i cori. L'interesse per la musica dei Lachrimatory resta vivo per l'intera durata dell'album e anzi quasi vorremmo ce ne fosse ancora dopo la fine di "Void".
"Transient" è decisamente un gran disco di genere che ha finalmente trovato un canale di distribuzione degno della sua qualità. I Lachrimatory possono limare qualcosa in termini di scrittura dei testi e contenuti, ma musicalmente siamo di fronte a una bella perla del 2011 che tutti gli amanti del doom atmosferico, con addirittura qualche vaga tinta funeral, dovrebbero ascoltare.

Doom vertreibt Kummer und Sorgen, aber defintiv nicht am Morgen. Lassen wir das. LACHRIMATORY sind seit 1999 dabei, schafften es aber nicht, irgendein Full Length aufzunehmen. Im Jahre 2002 wurde ein Demo veröffentlicht und im Jahre 2006 ebenfalls. 2011 erblickte dann dieses Album das Licht der Welt. In Eigenregie. Solitude Productions, das Doom Label, entdeckte die Burschen und 15 Jahre nach Bandgründing kommt quais offiziell und weltweit das Debut raus. Hm, Brasilianer und Doom. Klingt komisch, passt ja nicht zur südländischen Leidenschaft. Gestern habe ich aber ja auch eine CD einer Folk Metal Band aus Argentinien (zrymgöll). Komische Zeiten, in denen wir leben. Ich habe dieses Werk zweimal bei der Arbeit durchgehört und da müsste ich aufpassen, dass ich nicht eindöse im Büro. Auf der heimischen Anlage klingt das Ganze dann schon wesentlich druckvoller und intensiver. Die Brasilianer aus Curitiba mischen Doom mit Death Metal, wobei sie quasi völlig auf Geschwindigkeit verzichten. Schleppend und zerstörend wirbelt man sich durch die eine Stunde. Natürlich wird sehr viel Wert auf Atmosphäre gelegt und diese Gefühl der emotionalen Kälte und der Dunkelheit steigt förmlich in einen auf, keine Frage. Mir persönlich ist das teilweise dann aber zu viel. Ich brauche ab und zu mal eine Geschwindigkeitsexplosion. Egal, die Burschen machen ihre Sache aber wirklich gut und sie erinnern mich an späte My Dying Bride. Die Vocals sind typisch doomig. Sowohl Growls, als auch clean Vocals werden verwendet und diese Kombination verleit dem Ganzen eine wirklich düstere Stimmung. Was LACHRIMATORY von anderen Bands unterscheidet sind die mächtigen Melodien, die sie mit einbauen. Diese werden überwiegend schleppend vorgetragen und gehen ins Mark. Um der Dunkelheit noch mehr Platz zu geben, verwenden sie auch Metalfremde Instrumente, wie Keyboards und Cello.
Da die 2011`er Version ausverkauft ist, würde ich allen Doom Fans zu einen Kauf raten. Wirklich gutes Zeug, auch wenn es nicht mein alltägliches Brot wäre, aber ich finde, wenn schon melodischen Doom Death, dann so. Kein Song ist langweilig. Gutes Zeug für Doomer und Träumer, denn die Songs weisen eine Länge zwischen 8 und 12 Minuten auf. Fans von My Dying Bride und Evoken können bedenkenlos zuschlagen.

Да уж, выпустить первый полноформатный альбом за 15 лет существования группы - это ещё постараться надо. Но впрочем, это я так, немного злословлю. На самом деле музыканты издали этот материал ещё в 2011 году в виде самофинансируемого CD-R, но благодаря добрым людям из Solitude Productions их дебютник увидел в этом году на заводских компакт-дисках, что, конечно же, не может радовать, ибо болваночный тираж уже давно закончился и найти первый “первопресс” практически нереально сейчас. Исполняют бразильцы очень медленный и печальный doom/death metal старой школы со всеми атрибутами: грустный чистый вокал, отчаянный гроул, меланхоличные гитарные пассажи, плачущая виолончель... В общем, всё как в лучших традициях лихих 90-х. Этот альбом, который длиться больше часа, вернёт вас в далекое прошлое и заставит вас вспомнить былые времена, когда группы записывались в аналоговых солидных студиях, а не в однокомнатных квартирах при помощи старого убогого компьютера. Когда фэны покупали диски в магазинах, а не скачивали альбомы с Интернета. Когда о релизе того или иного коллектива люди узнавали с метал-журналов, а не с постов на форумах во всемирной паутине. В общем, как и гласит название диска - какое таки мимолетнее виденье.

It has been almost four years since I reviewed the two-track promo teaser for Lachrimatory’s album Transient. Since then, there has been a lot of confusion about the album’s eventual CD release, and despite numerous inquiries from fans on our forums and through other channels, the album’s fate seemed to remain a mystery. Apparently it has been available as a download for some time, but frankly, after such a long time I cannot even begin to reconstruct the whole story, so let us concentrate on the most important thing: the album was properly released by Solitude Productions a few months ago.
In my earlier review I stated that “[i]f the remaining songs are as good as these two, we are in for a fantastic release”. So how good are the remaining songs? Well, it was well worth the wait, for none of them is a let-down – on the contrary: the album is very homogeneous both in style and quality. There are a mere few sections which drag very slightly, and those are easily forgiven considering the great songwriting and musicianship.
Almost everything I wrote back in 2011 holds true for the album as a whole, but for newer readers, let me recapitulate the band’s stylistic cornerstones: Lachrimatory are clearly rooted in Death Doom, but instead of focusing on heaviness, their music is slow throughout and flows on naturally without any sharp transitions or outbursts of aggression. As can be expected in this genre, most of the vocals are growled with a few clean support lines here and there. There is little variation to the technically strong growls, but eventually, they go well with the homogeneous flow of the songs. A cello player is part of the regular line-up, largely replacing lead guitars with his very well-composed, sometimes classically influenced lines. The guitars, on the other hand, are kept relatively simple, providing distorted power chords and a few harmonies as well as clean broken chords.
More than once, early My Dying Bride come to mind – think of the twisted atmosphere of the slower sections in “Symphonaire Infernus…”, for instance. Production-wise, however, Transient is closer to Evoken’s Embrace the Emptiness and Quietus albums: everything sounds muffled as if from a distance, and most of the instruments are drenched in reverb. Nevertheless, everything is clearly audible in the mix. This characteristic sound is a perfect match with the songwriting; together they constitute the dark, at times bleak and almost oppressive atmosphere which permeates the album from start to finish. It is largely due to this atmosphere that, despite the classical influence and the relative lack of heavy guitar punch in the mid-frequencies, I would not describe Lachrimatory as a mellow band. Their music can even be said to capture the essence of Doom. Also, despite the style’s homogeneity, it is by no means monotonous: if you listen closely enough, there are changes of rhythm and measure, well-placed syncopations, short double bass sections and beautiful calm interludes to be found throughout the album which add diversity without sounding unnatural. To top things off, the lyrics, photoshopped images and pleasantly tidy layout in the booklet nicely complement the overall mood and make this into a professional product that collectors will love to have on their shelf.
In all, Transient is a great release which leaves very little to be desired. It is immediately accessible and yet far from shallow, rewarding repeated attentive listening, and for this balancing act the band is to be applauded. They appear to be true doomsters to the core, and their music is primarily intended for the very same kind of people. Most doomsters should find this both enjoyable and interesting, unless they are radical traditionalists, of course. I do hope that we will not have to wait another four years to hear from these Brazilians again.
