En deuxième piste c'est le titre « On The Other Side Of Life » que l'on découvre.

На диске “On the Other Side of Life” вас по-прежнему ждёт инструментальный symphonic funeral doom/death metal.

It is no surprise that the advent of home-recording technology in recent years has inevitably given rise to the explosion of solo-operated projects across multiple genres - particularly within the arena of Doom - and these numbers continue to increase on a daily basis. Where there was once a time when 'metal-purists' looked at such projects with scorn and condescension, the high quality of work being produced today by many single-member outfits would cause even the most stubborn purist to re-evaluate his/her stance of judgement. The Ukrainian-hailing symphonic Funeral Doom/Death Metal project under review today - Luna - serves as a fitting example of such a project, with rightful accreditation due to its sole operator DeMort. In the spotlight today is the band's 2015 full-length 'On the Other Side of Life', consisting of 2 mammoth-sized sonic passages - 'Grey Heaven Fall' and the album-title track - clocking in at a total duration of approximately 55 mins.

'On the Other Side of Life' marked my introduction to the band, and based on this album alone, Luna's style consists of extremely slow-paced and crushing Funeral Doom accompanied by haunting atmospherics and plenty of melodic content that cumulatively provide the band with a very solid and well-rounded soundscape. Personally, being more a fan of the raw-aggressive-underground styles, the Epic/Symphonic realm has never generally been my cup of tea and I found myself a little dubious at the initial outset of approaching this album. However, I have to say that this album very much altered my perceptions and that Luna have created a wonderful piece of art with 'The Other Side of Life'. Where most symphonically-oriented acts seem to generally exaggerate the 'epic' elements of their creations, Luna on the other hand has employed these very tastefully with just the right amount of crushing heaviness, melodic harmonies and majestic atmospheres.

There is a fair amount of variation on the album, with certain sections displaying DeMort's high level of musicianship and technical skill, suggesting a far greater potential than what he has chosen to showcase on the album. Subtle assaults of full-blown technical Death Metal passages comprised of raging double-pedal lines and fast tremolo-picking make a short yet solid appearance, before descending back comfortably into patient cycles of droney guitars, sluggish-paced drums and mournful melodies amidst mysterious atmospheres. The technical production on the album is top-notch, very much indicative of industry-standard engineering that serves to further amplify the innate intensity and dense emotional properties communicated by the album, making it a thoroughly enjoyable listening experience.

My only criticism - and this is not specifically directed towards this album but rather a reflection of lengthy tracks in general - would be the inevitable monotony derived by excessive repetition of certain passages that slowly begin to drain rather than stimulate. This is purely subjective, of course, from person to person. However, it would be almost impossible to maintain continuous engagement throughout any 30-minute piece, and on that front, I believe Luna delivers formidably compared to most of its peers.

To sum up, I'm grateful to have been introduced to such an interesting band, one whose overall artistic vision from artwork to composition and thematic expression is quite admirable. A keen observer may well see that many hours of thought and consideration have been put into this band's work. We live in a world today filled with individuals competing relentlessly to 'rise above the pack', or to be the next pioneer of a new genre/musical style. On that note, I find Luna's honest allegiance to the classic Funeral Doom outlay to be quite refreshing. With the combination of the band's efforts in re-adapting the genre into their own unique expression and genuine representation of emotional content on it's music, I found this to - ironically so - make them stand apart further from their contemporaries.

So without further ado, I kindly invite you to join Luna on a journey into the unknown 'On The Other Side Of Life'. It is a trip I assure you that once embarked upon, you will not regret nor wish to turn back from.

Ashes To Ashes, the dйbut of this Ukrainian one-man band, was well received by me a year ago. I granted it a 5 of 6 point score on my granite dice, and stated that despite its one song of close to an hour, it stood out from such monolithic acts as Ea and Monolithe.
The first impression I wrote in 2015 was appropriately enough a new year present, in the form of a free EP from this very band.
That one also appealed to me.

Luna blends funeral doom with symphonic elements. Not a revolutionary touch, but it certainly creates a distinctive character. Whilst the dйbut consisted of one 57-minute track, On The Other Side Of Life has chosen to distribute its 55 minutes on two respectively (approx.) 22 and 33 minute long songs.

As the first tones of On The Other Side Of Life seep out of the speakers, I'm quickly convinced that this is something I can safely recommend for all fans of funeral doom. Unfortunately obstacles pops up and puts a damper on my enthusiasm.

Grey Heavens Fall opens with sorrowful tones. Gorgeous and sometimes a bit creepy melodies with close to heartbreaking melancholy is supported by a powerful orchestral background as well as some choir.
This form of metal is often quite repetitive by nature. The song still moves through heavy and light (as a feather) passages without feeling monotonous. The song is cleverly stitched together with ample variety and solid mood.
I do not even notice that it's all instrumental before the press release makes me aware of it.

With one song down and one to go, Luna is almost halfway home free, well - at least 40% so, and the group is well on their way to a place on the podium.
Then comes the 50% longer title track.
It begins a bit hesitating, but that's fine, it must be allowed to build up tension before approaching climax.
This track has got its share of great parts too. They come in a row as trains, but this freight train has got some immensely long wagons/railcars and its running in syrup. The title track can not really endure concentrated listening very good. What in your peripheral vision appears as scenic will at a closer look reveal flaws.
Although some sequences even in this song have very good melodies it's still more that turn out as simply passable. In addition, the repetition it a bit excessive. The use of piano works perfectly when the instrument is used for its intended purpose, playing melodies, but when as little as three tangents are used to emit scattered plunked tones in a repetitive pattern in well over three minutes, it feels more like Chinese water torture.

The album is a little closer to Monolithe than their previous album was, as the guitar creates more soaring and outstretched tones this time. Add a sense of Perfection or Vanity from Dimmu Borgir's Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia for good measure.
I considered for the longest time to turn a blind eye to these critical points, but unfortunately the title track doesn't really hold the necessary qualities, and considering that it occupies 60% of the album I end up restricting myself from approving this one. It is with a heavy heart, for On The Other Side Of Life is indeed a well above-average album, and fans of funeral doom or calm and relaxing instrumental metal in general, should check out the album, and the bands still manageable discography. If you've also got a penchant for symphonic fumes, than I order you to do so.

Rozdíly vůči předchůdci jsou tedy víceméně minimální, ale některých pikozměn si třeba posluchač nakonec všimne, zejména pak v druhé části hudebního toku „On the Other Side of Life“, kde se nacházejí o něco razantnější kytarové riffy a hudba se rázem stává mnohem hutnější.

LunaCelkově se ovšem stále jedná o pochmurnou stěnu orchestrací, složenou z těch nejinternějších metalových skepsí, čili ani známka či záblesk nějakého plápolajícího světélka v dáli. Co ovšem opakovaně potěší, to je i tentokrát hodně nadstandartně propracovaná zvuková stránka, bez které by nahrávka postrádala kouzlo a jen s těží by dokázala vtáhnout posluchače do děje. Nicméně tento prvek měl De Mort ošetřený už na debutu a na „ On The Other Side Of Life“ je pochopitelně pokračováno v obdobném režimu, což kvituji s povděkem.

„On The Other Side Of Life“ vřele doporučuji všem posluchačům, jež si rádi vychutnávají muziku v klidu, nepotřebují k tomu vokály a své myšlenky často a rádi pouštějí do všech možných i nemožných směrů.

« On The Other Side Of Life » fait suite à un premier album de ce projet ukrainien, « Ashes To Ashes », paru en 2014.

Az ukrán Luna névre hallgató egyszemélyes instrumentális funeral doom jellegű képződmény az on the other side of life lemezét már jó pár napja gyűröm. A Solitude Production sokak számára egyet jelent a kiemelkedő, de legrosszabb esetben is korrekt funeral / doom és egyéb éjfekete vonszolós istencsapásokkal. Van ebben igazság, hiszen a Luna sem tett le rossz anyagot így a második nagylemezhez érve. Viszont amellett, hogy folyamatos fogódzkodókat kerestem minden hallgatásnál, egyfajta belső értekezés bontakozott ki bennem mind a Lunával, mind a funeral doom és legfőképp az instrumentális irányvonallal kapcsolatban. A kötelező kört fussuk meg gyorsan százon. Az on the other side of life két tételt tartalmaz, bő 55 perc játékidővel. Mindkét tétel instrumentális, elsősorban funeral hangulatokra építkező, sokszor post metal érzéseket is bátran megmozgató, lassan hömpölygő zenefolyam.

A jól kivitelezett instrumentális zeneszerzésnek a nagymestere a komolyzene. A lassú megszokottá válik a gyors viszonypont hiányában. A totális megsemmisülés nem következik be a megváltás lehetőségének felvillantása nélkül. Kontraszt nélkül kioltódnak a hatások.

Ennek hátteréről sincs semmilyen adat, mindenesetre szemet gyönyörködtető alkotás, meghozza a kedvet a zenehallgatáshoz.
Idén januárban egy kétszámos EP is született (There Is No Tomorrow Gone Beyond Sorrow Under A Sheltering Mask), amely zeneileg összefogottabb, érettebb volt.
