Occasional NCS contributor KevinP was the source of this final MISCELLANY test case. Unlike Patrick and Raven, he simply provided a link, with no words of recommendation, and so I can’t be completely sure whether he was enamored of the music or simply thought I would be. Regardless, I checked it out.
The band’s name is Narrow House (a reference to a coffin) and they’re based in Ukraine. Their debut album A Key To Panngrieb was released by Solitude Productions in August 2012, with creepy cover art by Andrey Sivolap. It consist of four mostly very long songs, the last of which is a cover of Esoteric’s “Beneath This Face”. Without having much reason for the decision, I stabbed the 13-minute third track, “Стеклянный Бог (The Vitreous God)”, for purposes of this MISCELLANY test.
It’s a a solemn devotion to the creation of heavy-hearted atmosphere, and listening is like casting yourself onto a fragile raft being swept gradually out to sea by ocean swells under a moonlit night sky. It’s slow and sorrowful like much of the music in funeral doom, and includes protracted words uttered in deep, jagged tones, but some aspects of the song are unexpected — principally the use of a cello and continued synthesizer-generated ambience to accent the bereft melodies, which are themselves sweepingly panoramic. The big riffs are not as gut-rumbling as usually found in this genre, but the widely spaced drum beats are just as emphatic.
After exploring that track from A Key To Panngrieb, I discovered that Solitude Productions plans to release the second Narrow House album on May 19, 2014. Its name is Thanathonaut, and I intend to investigate it, too — though based on a band interview I read, there will be some significant changes in the length and sound of the music, with new instruments (sax and contrabass), clean vocals, and English lyrics, at least in part. For now, I’ll include below a trailer for the new album, which contains fragments of a song named “La Cité des Enfants Perdus”. I’m also including an official video for A Key To Panngrieb’s first track, “Последнее Пристанище (Last Retreat)”, along with the full-album stream from Bandcamp.
UPDATE: After finishing the writing of this piece but before posting it on our site, I discovered that Narrow House launched a Bandcamp page (just yesterday) for Thanathonaut, with one new song available for streaming — “Crossroads”. It is indeed different from what’s on A Key To Panngrieb – and I’m including it below as well.

Glaubt man der Homepage von NARROW HOUSE, so sind die Ukrainer trotz ihres jungen Existenzalters, denn die Band wurde erst 2009 gegründet, eine der ersten Funeral DoomBands, die überhaupt live in Kiew gespielt haben. Hailing from Ukraine I can only imagine what bleak and desolate place spawned Narrow House into existance. 4 man and 1 woman strong the band's lot in life is creating godforsaken funeral doom metal focussing on atmosphere, and in 2012 the world would hear the first eldritch groaning that the band has to offer.
Like the strange creaking and moaning of a long-abandoned house the 4-track album slowly blunders into life with the opening track. The mental images created by Narrow House at this early point are those of complete desolation, abandonment and horrid lonesomeness - As it turns out these themes of eerie atmospheres and tenebrous matters are frequent on the album, and definitely one of the band's strongpoints. Their incorporation of classical instruments such as the cello fits the style of funeral doom metal perfectly and gives the music a destinct feel of authenticity and hints toward the filmic, making it almost sound like the soundtrack to some long forgotten black and white silent horror movie.
Narrow House have put the funeral in funeral doom metal with A Key to Panngrieb. Though I don't understand a word of their lyrics or song titles the music speaks its own language. A language of death, ragnarok and darkness. To some the music of the Ukranian band may seem uneventful or bland, but to me it seems to have great depth and particularly well thought through. Add to this that the production is as clear as it needs to be with this type of music. It leaves every aspect audible and yet making it possible for the band to have certain suggestive themes that make their music excel in creating atmospheres.
I like how the funerary procession guitars aren't actually the main focus of the band. The droning chords of guitar and bass go perfectly in unison and are crucial to the music, but without the vibrant cello-work the album would be incredibly boring. The tracks are generally speaking very lengthy, and this serves both as the main attraction and annoyance of A Key to Panngrieb. As most funeralesque graveyard bands the length of the tracks can make it hard to stay interesting, especially when there's so little going on. But again, this is both the thing that makes this type of music work and the thing that makes it tiresome to listen to for prolonged periods of time. But all in all A Key to Panngrieb is a prime example of great funeral doom metal, even if it isn't the heaviest of sorts. 8/10 guitars.

Честно говоря, поначалу я очень скептически отнесся к этому коллективу (не путать с одноимённой американской thrash metal группой). В последнее время молодые группы в жанре
funeral doom metal (а именно в таком стиле играют одесситы), появляются как грибы после дождя, и к сожаленью большинство из них ничего из себя не представляют в музыкальном плане. Однако весь мой скепсис улетучился, когда я начал слушать диск " A Key to Panngrieb". Вот уж не ожидал такого мощного материала. Тяжелые гитарные риффы, красивые клавишные пассажи и мрачная атмосфера - вот что представляет собою дебют от NARROW HOUSE. Правда вот вокал мне показался слишком уж однообразным - к концу альбома он начинает немного утомлять. А так в целом очень даже сильная заявка на отечественной doom metal сцене. Обложка, правда, банальная, ну да что поделать, видимо у музыкантов была такая задумка. И справедливости ради, можно сказать, что она всё-таки символизирует название диска. А уж какой смысл они в него вкладывали, это уже, наверное, лучше спросить непосредственно у участников группы.

"A Key To Pannegrieb" bietet eine sehr eindimensionale Form des Funeral Doom. Die Keyboards haben durchweg denselben Streichorchestersound, die Gitarren spielen mit minimalen Ausnahmen ausschließlich breite Akkorde. Das ist kein Alleinstellungsmerkmal von Narrow House und auch nicht per se ein Merkmal minderer Qualität, aber die Grundzutaten sind an sich nicht so spannend aufbereitet, dass auch ihre Perpetuierung über 45:26 Minuten spannend bleibt. Insbesondere die Akkordfolgen und Auflösungen sind oft weit vorhersehbar. Dennoch ist "A Key To Pannegrieb" keineswegs ein schlechtes Album. Der Dreizehnminüter "Stekljannyi Bog" reißt mit bzw. reißt runter, trotz fehlender Überraschungen, einfach durch seine düstere, verzweifelte Stimmung und die vereinzelten, hintergründigen Gitarrenleads.
Und drei zusätzliche Trümpfe hat die Band ebenfalls in petto. Da wäre zum einen das Live-Cello, dessen warmer Klang ebenso wie die melancholisch-düsteren Tonabfolgen optimal mit dem Keyboard harmoniert. Da wäre zum anderen "Pod Maskoi Etoi", ein Cover des Brechers "Beneath This Face" von Esoterics "The Maniacal Vale"-Gottalbum, das durch den ins Russische übertragenen Text und das Cello eine interessante neue Note erhält, auch wenn es ansonsten eine 1:1-Kopie des Originals darstellt. Sänger Yegor Bewitched zeigt sich übrigens auch über den weiteren Verlauf des Albums von Esoterics Greg Chandler beeinflusst. Und da wäre zum dritten das pechschwarze Dark-Ambient-Intro des Openers "Posledneje Pristanischtsche", das einen ein ganz anderes, deutlich kälteres Album erwarten lässt, als am Ende zu hören ist.
Im Gesamtüberblick haben Narrow House mit ihrem Debüt eine solide Funeral-Doom-Scheibe vorgelegt, die Raum für Steigerung lässt. Gute Ansätze sind u.a. mit dem Cello da und atmosphärisch sind sie mitunter auch leistungsstark. Wirkliche Tiefe indes müssen sie erst noch entwickeln.

Na początek słówko o okładce, bo należy do tych z cyklu naiwnych i jedynie z zamysłu symbolicznych. Dobra, jest klucz, jest jakaś mroczna postać, ale wykonanie rysunku zdecydowanie do najlepszych nie należy. Wystarczy sobie porównać moc bijącą z coveru zdobiącego drugi album łódzkiego DEEP DESOLATION „Rites of Blasphemy” z tym rysuneczkiem z „A Key To Panngrieb” i wszystko będzie jasne. Ale NARROW HOUSE nie samą okładkę stworzyło, bowiem zawartość ich debiutanckiego albumu idzie tropem tych wszystkich kapel hołdujących starej szkole funeral doom metalu, choć nie samą ‘ponurością’ NARROW HOUSE emanuje na swoim materiale. Owszem, generalnie wychodzą z podobnego założenia jak przed nimi na przykład EVOKEN, SHAPE OF DESPAIR czy pochodzący także ze wschodnich landów ABSTRACT SPIRIT czy REVELATIONS OF RAIN, że na masywnym i ruszającym się powolnie niczym pogrzebowy kondukt fundamencie można oprzeć tworzone przez siebie dźwięki, ale oprócz tego należy wprowadzać także inne elementy i rozwiązania. Tak też uczynili, stąd w składzie zespołu pojawił się wiolonczelista, a pewne motywy nawiązują również do obszernej gamy rzeczy wykreowanych choćby przez MY DYING BRIDE. Zresztą kto ze sceny doom/funeral doom się nimi nie inspiruje?... Rzecz w tym, że całość nie przejawia jeszcze cech oryginalności i poza zagorzałymi zwolennikami takiego grania nikt nawet nie spojrzy na „A Key To Panngrieb”. Mimo to, muzycy, którzy wcześniej działali pod szyldem FUNESTUM, mają jasną (a raczej ciemną, mroczną i apokaliptyczną) wizję jakim szlakiem podążać. Tworzą długie, rozbudowane kawałki (na tym albumie są cztery, łącznie trwające nieco ponad kwadrans), swoim ukraińskim braciom przekazują ponure opowieści (niestety, tłumaczeń tekstów nie zamieszczono we wkładce), jest w tym jakiś zamysł i niezłe wykonanie, które - jak już wspomniałem - spodoba się fanom takiego właśnie, na swój sposób klimatycznego grania. Poczekajmy jednak na kolejny materiał, który wedle cezury czasowej (nagrania „A Key To Panngrieb” miały miejsce w 2010 roku) powinien już powoli powstawać. Na razie przyglądam się i przysłuchuję ich debiutowi z lekkim dystansem, jednak z pewną przyjemnością ostrożnie stawiam ten krążek na półce obok herosów funeral doom metalu.

I was pretty wondered how they did this album! This is truly obscure funeral doom metal. Without any sweet things this one sounds very deep, and main thing – made in real funeral doom metal way, with slow rhythms, dark atmosphere, full of something like hatred and sorrow at the same time… Songs are long, but aren’t boring at all, so, for example, you’ll not be bored by 13 minutes long song, coz there are enough of tempo-changes (made in monotonous way, but looks different). No more to say – just very good and memorable funeral doom metal album from my country.

Speziell im Funeral Doom Metal Sektor will es vielen Bands häufig nicht so recht gelingen, einen wirklich eigenständigen Sound mit gesteigertem Wiedererkennungswert zu kreieren. So reichen einzig die schleppenden Riffs von kellertief gestimmten Gitarren samt dunklen Growls nicht aus, um wirklich überzeugende und stimmige Songs zu komponieren. Leider lässt auch die ukrainische Formation NARROW HOUSE auf ihrem Debütwerk ”A KEY TO PANNGRIEB” in Sachen Songwriting trotz einiger gelungener Ansätze noch gewisse Schwächen erkennen.

Eröffnet wird die Platte dabei von dem knapp viertelstündigen Stück ”Последнее Пристанище”, dessen erste Minuten von geschickt miteinander verwobenen Synthesizern und düsteren Gitarrenmelodien leben und einen sehr vielversprechenden Auftakt bilden, der schließlich zu dumpfen Riffkonstrukten und röchelnden Vocals überleitet. Die sich zunächst entwickelnde Euphorie für ”A KEY TO PANNGRIEB” schwindet nun jedoch fast ebenso schnell wieder, wie sie aufgekommen ist. Statt weiterhin an der ausgewogene Mischung aus durchdachten Riffs und begleitenden Keyboards festzuhalten, driften NARROW HOUSE in ein fast schon belangloses Instrumentalgerüst aus schwammigen Klangteppichen und eintöniger Saitenarbeit ab. Zwar werden hier und da noch sporadisch Melodielinien eingestreut, doch bestehen die kommenden drei Songs fast ausschließlich aus zähen Powerchordabfolgen, die selbstverständlich reichlich wenig innovative Momente zum Geschehen beitragen.
Sicherlich ist das Material nicht völlig ohne Reiz und eine gewisse Atmosphäre kann das Quintett auch mit Hilfe dieser sehr simplen Hilfsmittel erzeugen. Doch so wirklich zünden können die beständig im Vordergrund agierenden Keyboardsounds, die zudem nicht selten leicht schief und dissonant ertönen, auf Dauer gesehen wirklich nicht. Dies trifft auch auf die Coverversion des ESOTERIC Songs ”Beneath This Face” zu, die neben den drei Eigenkompositionen als Abschluss auf ”A KEY TO PANNGRIEB” gepackt wurde. Zwar können NARROW HOUSE den Titel ihrem eigenen Stil anpassen, wobei allerdings der Charme und die Mystik des Originals fast vollständig verloren gehen.
Trotz aller Kritik ist ”A KEY TO PANNGRIEB” kein durchweg schlechtes Album geworden, wenngleich frische Ideen – soweit diese im Funeral Doom Metal überhaupt möglich sind – gänzlich fehlen und NARROW HOUSE sich mit ihren Songs somit kaum von anderen Formationen des Genres hervorheben können. Es bleibt daher zu hoffen, dass die noch sehr junge Band ihren Stil auf zukünftigen Veröffentlichungen noch optimieren kann.

Speziell im Funeral Doom Metal Sektor will es vielen Bands häufig nicht so recht gelingen, einen wirklich eigenständigen Sound mit gesteigertem Wiedererkennungswert zu kreieren. Prova d'esordio per la formazione Ucraina, dedita per sua stessa definizione ad un atmospheric funeral doom; data la nazionalità il disco non poteva che uscire su Solitude Prod. e la denominazione della band altro non è che un termine slang usato come ulteriore definizione di 'bara'. Con queste premesse, se credete di trovare atmosfere ariose, melodie e cambi di ritmo, allora rivolgetevi altrove perchè qui vi è solo tristezza, depressione, oppressione, ritmi lenti e ripetitivi, tracce lunghe quattordici minuti l'una, clichè stantii tali da rendere l'aria di per sè pesante, addirittura irrespirabile. Lunghissime intro di tastiere solenni che creano paesaggi atmosferici in "Последнее Пристанище", growling tedioso, riff semplici, ma statici, nessuna variante rispetto a quanto già detto e fatto con miglior perizia da Skepticism, Thergothon e Esoteric, quindi un'opera sterile e ridondante che necessita di nuove idee e maggiori variazioni sul pur ristretto campo di manovra del funeral doom. Giusto l'ultima traccia è dotata di quelle varianti (violoncello) che svegliano l'ascoltatore dal torpore, ma trattasi di una cover degli Esoteric: "Beneath This Face".

Notable debut que mediante (una vez más) Solitude Productions, me llega esta vez, de la mano del cuarteto ucraniano, Narrow House. Formados en 2009 a raíz de un antiguo proyecto llamado Funestum, que no termino de cuajar, y más enfocado hacia el Funeral Doom de corte oscuro, la idea que tenía su fundador Yegor Ostapenko esta vez, se antojaba un poco distinta, aunque sin renunciar a nada, como nos muestra en este interesante 'A Key To Panngrieb'.
Siendo esta la única referencia de los de Kiev tras su creación, pues parece que inicialmente hacían un Doom Metal de corte ambiental, difícil de contrastar, lo único que se me ocurre es que 'A Key To Panngrieb', viene a ser una especie de compendio de todas las etapas de Ostapenko. Tenemos un fondo sinfónico majestuoso, cortesía de un Alexsey Kso, quien además es el encargado de dotar a los temas de elementos clásicos, ya sea un piano, o el cello, muy presente durante todo el disco, llevando la pauta a paso lento pero con cierto adorno gótico en "The Last Refuge", recordando un poco a los fineses Shape Of Despair, mientras que en "Glass God", su comedido se antoja más de fondo, en medio de un panorama dramático y asfixiante. Desgraciadamente, y pese a que los ucranianos insisten mucho en colgarse la etiqueta 'ambient', ello es más bien escaso, por no decir inexistente.
Posiblemente lo más característico que puedan echarse Narrow House a los hombros, sea que, pese a una estructura bastante clásica, en ocasiones se puede apreciar como las guitarras y la batería se funden, de algún modo con los sintetizadores de Katya Romanova, creando un sonido intrigante y uniforme. Nada destacable del apartado vocal, en un Ostapenko correcto, tirando de buenas guturales y guiños más corrosivos.
Llama la atención, también, el cover de Esoteric, para el tema “Beneath This Face”, y que supone el cierre del disco, bastante bien traído. Un corte de tintes folklóricos, en ocasiones más subido de tono, explotando en medio de una ráfaga en forma de doble bombo e guitarras afiladas.
Grabado en los Morton Studios de Kiev (Sad Alice Said, Grimfaith, Synopsis), el disco suena compacto, y la impresión es que no se haya perdido nada por el camino, pese a que el despliegue sinfónico es importante, así que se puede apreciar cada detalle con relativa facilidad, destacando un fondo realmente variado. Ello posiblemente justifique el hecho, de que 'A Key To Panngrieb', haya estado dos años gestándose. Un disco interesante, que pese a llegar ya un poco tarde, demuestra que el este de Europa sigue siendo el feudo indiscutible del Doom Metal, y que si escarbamos un poco, siempre hay sorpresas.
