In the recent years while writing for Metal Revolution I’ve had a pleasure of getting familiar with many Russian and other Eastern European bands. Some were better than the others. Revelations Of Rain (Otkroveniya Dozhdya) is another band from this gigantic country and I feel quite ambivalent while listening to it. First, let me excuse my laziness for not writing this review before, but it was simply lost among other releases received in the last year. Nevertheless, Deceptive Virtue is their fourth record, a follow-up to 2010 Emanation Of Hatred, 2009 Revelations Of Rain and 2007 debut, Marble Shades Of Despair. This latest seven-tracker is both similar and yet different from its predecessors. Surely, it is obvious that the guys have matured both lyrically and musically. They finally begun to leave their own mark upon their music, making it their own and partly recognizible. On the other hand, it still sounds too familiar and there’s very little innovativness in their sound, apart from this better handling of the instruments and a slightly improved song-writing. Their sound is safe, unadvantorous and uninspiring unless you’re a true doom metal fanatic. Most of the tracks are just boring and quite lengthy and one finds it hard to differentiate one from another. Melodies are pedestrian and with long guitar and keyboard parts, accompanied by a very pale-drumming. In other wrods, I still lack some more variation and diversity. To top it all, all songs are written in their native Russian, which sometimes can be a good thing, but not if you want to reach a wider audience. On the opposite side we have a very beautiful yet simple cover artwork and a booklet with all lyrics and other important information printed inside. The overall atmosphere is dark and severe, as it is suppossed to be when dealing with gloomy and depressive doom/death. With danger of repeating myself; I still see progress and maturity in their sound, but it is just too little, too late and too safe. Thus, I can not really recommend this opus to anyone apart from die-hard fans of such bands as Officium Triste and Mourning Beloveth or those worshiping atmospheric and depressive funeral doom & death metal.

Na początek krótka i konieczna według mnie informacja. Otóż rosyjska grupa REVELATIONS OF RAIN w wielu publikacjach i na wielu stronach internetowych jest opisywana jako OTKROVENIYA DOZHDYA lub ich nazwa jest podawana w zapisie oryginalnym, rosyjskojęzycznym. Nawet na okładkach ich płyt dominuje pisownia w ich ojczystym języku, a wszystkie teksty i opisy we wkładkach też są po rosyjsku. Niech to nie zmyli w czasie poszukiwania zespołu znanego jednak powszechnie pod międzynarodowym szyldem REVELATIONS OF RAIN i tego się trzymam także przy okazji tej recenzji. A że zacnie grający to band, niech świadczy fakt, że z przyjemnością sięgam po ich kolejne albumy i chociaż nic nowego czy innowatorskiego w stylistyce doom/death metalu tu nie usłyszymy, to każdy z nich trzyma wysoki poziom i jest rozpoznawalny dzięki charakterystycznemu współbrzmieniu ciężkich gitarowych riffów, melodycznej gitary prowadzącej i orkiestralnie brzmiących klawiszy. Owszem, każdy może się tutaj doszukać wyrazistych konotacji z MY DYING BRIDE, PARADISE LOST, SWALLOW THE SUN, INSOMNIA, EVOKEN LONGING FOR A DAWN czy niektórymi zespołami spod znaku funeral doom/death metalu, ale brzmi to świeżo, niezwykle naturalnie i intrygująco. Jak to już wielokrotnie opisywano - "dobre melodie są zawsze w cenie" i tak też jest na czwartym już albumie REVELATIONS OF RAIN - "Deceptive Virtue". Kawałki nie są oparte na banalnych i szablonowych rozwiązaniach melodycznych, zmieniają swój nastrój dość często i nie wałkują w kółko tych samych motywów, a dzięki bogactwu patentów i zmianom tempa nie nużą i dostarczają wielu wrażeń. Melancholijne pasaże wymieniają się z przyśpieszeniami godnymi wczesnego AMORPHIS, przytłaczający ciężar wzbogacają prawie że symfoniczne tła klawiszy i zagrywki gitary akustycznej, głęboki growl gościnnie występującego Arsagora (pojawił się już na debiucie REVELATIONS OF RAIN) uzupełniają jego wrzaskliwe i bardziej desperackie wokale, a popis umiejętności wszystkich muzyków mamy choćby w instrumentalnym, niezwykle epickim i ultra-melodyjnym kawałku "Obmanchivaja Dobrodetel'". Z umiejętnego połączenia tych wszystkich elementów powstała bardzo równa, stanowiąca w pewnym sensie jedną opowieść całość, podczas której można się przekonać o coraz większej dominacji grup pochodzących ze wschodnich rubieży na scenie doom/death metalowej. Trudno mi nawet wskazać ulubione kawałki na tym krążku, bo właściwie każdy ma w sobie to nieokreślone COŚ.

La Russie possède une scène Doom/Death assez impressionnante et peut compter sur des formations connues comme Revelations of Rain pour la défendre avec brio. En effet, le quintet a mis du temps à démarrer puisque formé en 2001, il faut attendre 2007 pour voir la sortie de leur premier enregistrement. Le groupe a ensuite trouvé son rythme de croisière avec un opus tous les deux ans.

Situation assez rare pour être soulignée, la sortie de ce 4ème album tombe quelques jours après la sortie de "Nihil Euphoria" de Shallow Rivers. Pourquoi ce parallèle me demanderez-vous ? Tout simplement parce que le duo de Shallow Rivers est issu du groupe Revelations of Rain, preuve que les deux protagonistes sont productifs.

Comme toujours chez les Russes, la pochette de ce "Deceptive Virtue" est assez mystérieuse, on lève le masque sur la véritable nature de la formation. Les paroles sont une nouvelle fois écrites dans leur langue natale et l'artwork en général est de qualité. Voyons si la musique en est de même et si cet opus rivalise avec l'album éponyme "Revelations of Rain" sorti en 2009, véritable référence.

Bien que le Doom/Death proposé soit très mélodique, Revelations of Rain n'y va pas par quatre chemins et dès les premiers moments de "Chernye Teni", on sait que cette offrande va être lourde à porter, remplie de noirceur et de mélancolie; cette dernière étant particulièrement accentuée par la présence du clavier. La mélodie pénètre dans vos veines, la voix s'insinue dans votre cerveau, les guitares pesantes vous donne mal au ventre, tous ces signes que l'on ressent dès le début de "Deceptive Virtue" et qui présage d'un très bon moment musical.

Cette sensation se confirme durant toute l'écoute, avec notamment l'entrelacement de deux lignes mélodiques parfaitement complémentaires ("Dekabr II"), une ambiance plus oppressante jouant sur les dissonances ("Mezhdu Bezzhiznenymi Beregami"), des passages rapides et efficaces à la 6 cordes ("V Bezumii Velichie Tvojo"). Ces petits détails qui font de chaque morceau un objet unique.

Les passages plus atmosphériques sont particulièrement bien menés ("Dekabr II", "Jestetika Opustoshenija"), les nappes de clavier jouant leur rôle de décor, sombre, et les guitares apportant cette lourdeur plus terre à terre. La formation sait exactement où nous mener et nous la suivons avec une certaine crainte.

Revelations of Rain déroule tout son potentiel avec un naturel déconcertant, son expérience fait la différence, la musique est efficace et inspirée. "Deceptive Virtue" défile à grande vitesse, les morceaux de 7 minutes en moyenne sont parfaitement maîtrisés et le temps passe vite aux côtés des Russes.

Plus l'album avance et plus les parties atmosphériques se font courtes et rares. L'influence Death metal reprend ses droits ("Pepel Nad Nami") et la batterie peut s'exprimer pleinement à coup de double pédale. Cette nouvelle production se conclut tout de même par ce que le quintet sait faire de mieux, on y retrouve donc des nappes de claviers en introduction, une guitare soliste incisive, une guitare rythmique lourde et une voix d'outre-tombe. "Jestetika Opustoshenija" qui en est un parfait exemple, est un véritable plaisir pour les oreilles.

Avec ce dernier album, Revelations of Rain assoit un peu plus son autorité sur le Doom/Death russe. Inspiré, sombre, solide, nuancé et original, ce "Deceptive Virtue" est un véritable petit bijou pour toute personne sensible à la musique mélancolique. Un incontournable !

A Revelations Of Rain (oroszul: Otkroveniya Dozhdya) 2001 óta létezik, Podolszkban székel a csapat. Mint annyi zenekar arrafelé, ez az ötös is doom/death metalban „mozog”, s e tárgykörben már a negyedik lemezt hallgathatjuk végig. Meg is tettem többször is, de igazából azon kívül, hogy hallottam egy újabb kiadványt az ismert világban, nem sok újjal gazdagodtam. Az orosz brigád nem tud, vagy nem is akar elszakadni a Paradise Lost és a régi Katatonia világától, ugyanis e két stílusteremtő zenekar meghatározó a keletiek új anyagán is.
A közel 50 perces albumon megtudhatjuk, hogyan értelmezi a fenti két csapat stílusát a Revelations Of Rain, de mindezt a milliószor hallott megoldásokon túl kevés jó témával teszik. Néhány erősebb riffre, dallamra felfigyeltem, valahol még egy gyors részt is beiktattak az oroszok, de a lemez stílusgyakorlat mivoltán ez nem változtat érdemben.
Nem igénytelen kiadvány, de meglehetősen lapos.

Forgotten Path

Once again another release from “Solitude Productions” is brought to my attention. And even though I wasn’t familiar with the music of Откровения Дождя before, I guessed pretty well accurately what to expect from them. After getting to know their creative output better, I think it is safe to assume that this band is among the best Doom Metal acts coming out of Russia. In my experience, most, if not all outfits I’ve heard coming from Eastern Europe especially from Russia and Ukraine, lean more towards melodic and lyrical rather than bitterness and oppressive side of Doom genre. “Обманчивая Добродетель” (“Deceitful Benefactor”) is the fourth album within their twelve years of existence and this is very much the case here as well. The production and atmosphere their music creates, makes Откровения Дождя rather an enjoyable act given that the listener is into Melodic Death/Doom Metal. On the other hand this work doesn’t seemingly differ much from their previous works musically, though it sounds quite mature. It is not as dark and tragic as their previous album “Эманация Ненависти” (“Emanation of Hatred”), but is still a powerful and well produced effort. And while their Doom side is compelling, the very brief inserts of evident Death or even Black Metal parts seem to sound quite superficial and detach from their musical picture. It is always a bold decision for a band to sing in its native language. But otherwise the lyrics are pretty much cliché so this aspect doesn’t make these Russian Doom’ers very special in that respect. So enough said, “Обманчивая Добродетель” strongly follows the Melodic Doom Metal tradition without being very original or innovative, but it actually succeeds in bringing the ear candy, and this might just be enough once in a while.
