As far as concept albums go, the idea created by Belgium’s Sludge Doom quintet GROWN BELOW on their 2011 debut opus “The Long Now” is extremely creative and original, as well as being extremely relevant to an event that may be dwelling on the horizon in the very near future, if you believe all of the doomsday tales. In December of this year, 2012, it is predicted that the world will end. Whether you believe or not the theory is intriguing to say the least! What Grown Below have done is write a fictional story in musical form where it is not the world that ends, but time itself ends! In the story the band captures what the last few days on Earth would be like before time ceases to exist which includes menacing creatures devoid of age who roamed the earth before mankind and have been since trapped on the other side of time. As the album progresses time suddenly grinds to a halt and allows these historical creatures to pass forth into our reality. Once set loose upon us they wreak havoc, feasting on every living soul and meanwhile the absence of time creates “The Abyss”, an enormous tear in the middle of the Earth! The teller of this story leaps into this abyss and falls down through a dark matter called “Nebula” and by taking this action he locks himself in his own non-temporal environment and brings time to a climax, including past and future! Nothing remains following this act, no time, creatures, life…nothing! This infinite state of nothingness is called “The Long Now”…

… Undoubtedly the story is a superb concoction of an imaginative and creative collective yet musically the band takes a while to truly sink in, more than one listen is recommended. “Trojan Horses” starts gradually with an almost 28 Days Later styled cacophony before their groove ladened riff-age takes centre stage. Never a band to stagnate, Grown Below often change tack as their music flits rather than winds from one position to the next. A band of contrast, they temper their undoubtedly heavy style with flashes of melodic inspiration. Vocally Grown Below’s singer ranges from the darkened haunting ambiance of Maynard J Keenan to a more throat scraping Sludge out pouring of say Cult of Luna but at all times Grown Below feel at one collectively as well as with their musical output.

If the story is epic, the music backs it up succinctly, with subtleties as well as harsh tones! Grown Below’s sound is like a light piercing the gloom that surrounds it, letting the story and melodies that attach themselves to it wander freely and as an end result you as the listener feel enriched! A superbly executed album from an extremely talented and creative band, but how do you top such a remarkable debut?

Grown Below – Opmerkzaam kwartet dat zich profileert binnen de stijl van Isis , Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, And so I watch you from Afar en Amenra. .

As a short walk into their history, Grown Below is a Belgian act formed in the early 2011, formerly known as Timer. Later that year, in June, the band signed with Slow Burn Records ( Russia ) and in September their first album ” The long now” was official released by the Russian Label.

Grown Below with “The Long now” has a very interesting, yet experimental approach. In my honest opinion it’s not really an album for the less experimented listeners. They manage to combine 2 genres that are somewhat in opposite, a heavy, rough, slow and depressive sludge/doom metal with harsh vocals and some dreamy, acoustic / ambient post rock elements with clean vocals.

Trojan Horse, the first song on the album is the perfect example for this experimental approach. The first 3 minutes of the song (from 13) demand some strong nerves, there are some really odd timed riffs, a very heavy bass line that overpowers the guitars, all of this giving the song a somewhat alternative approach. After this “intro” the songs drifts to a more post rock dimension with hypnotic and dreamy clean guitar passages, spacey atmosphere, clean vocals all of this exploding towards the end with some really great post rock riffs, a more aggressive drum tempo and a combination of harsh and clean yelled vocals.

The following songs, Devoid of Age and The Abyss have a similar structure as the first song, two genres mixed in one, sludge doom moments merged with post rock elements. This time the elements are mixed better, it doesn’t give you the idea of two songs in one, also in “The Abyss” we have some harmonic violin and female vocals passages, something that you would not expect in this album.

Minaco II – Nebula is a very minimalist song, 4 minutes of post rock atmosphere, it’s like a intro for the next song End of all time, a song that follows the direction set by the previous longer tracks, but this time with a more relaxed approach.

Finally, The Long Now is the last long song on the album, a heavy 16 minutes song filled with dreamy hypnotic slow clean guitar passages, clean vocals followed by heavy doomish guitar riffs, growled vocals, aggressive drums and some beautiful female background vocals. This song really deserves to be the name of the album, it contains all the elements spread in the entire album. We also have an outro for this album, Malklara.

Overall, “The long now” contains different approaches and different influences, as we said above regarding the genre we have sludge doom, post rock, we have some atmospheric keyboards, subtle guitar riffs, clean vocals, death metal vocals, we have violin, some female vocals, a strong bass all of this in a 1 hour album. Maybe to complex, maybe it’s just the way it should be, this is for you to judge. The album is really well produced and I really enjoyed the post rock elements combined with a little touch of doom.
