Transcending Obscurity

Whales And Aurora are like the post / atmospheric hardcore version of Ahab, the German (funeral?) doom / death group, what with the ocean being this album’s main theme, and such; and despite the band’s interesting and unconventional moniker, the album itself is the median of everything that is ‘post’, in that it neither breaks any boundaries nor is it revolutionary but rather the contrary: it treads safe waters and while doing so, displays an impressive and well composed music that is true to its aesthetics, epitomizing the right way to compose atmospheric, metal-laden hardcore.

‘The Shipwreck’ excels in being just that; an average focal point that is a case study of how to compose decent, enjoyable, heartfelt and yes, very much atmospheric AND heavy music that walks the line where heavy metal’s brutish attitude and post-rock’s sophistication converge, all tied up by aesthetics that are the essence of hardcore punk; the shouting and angry vocals, the basic, repetitive sequences, the rock and roll dynamics and so on.

With endless drawn-out guitar sweepings that envelope the listener with warm tidal waves of oceanic sweet and salty flair, a throat-tearing screamer capable of delivering wrathful yet melancholic and emotional performance and some basic yet strong rhythm section, the band are able to create a suspenseful plot that is as engaging and enjoyable as it is intimidating, all the while keeping the dynamics intact and the songs flowing, in addition to maintaining a good balance between the heavier, grittier elements and the benign, semi-romantic moments the band alternate between.

‘The Shipwreck’ is the bread and butter, or meat and potatoes if you will, of everything atmospheric and everything post-hardcore-ish; not as basic nor as soul crushing as Neurosis’ work, but also not as far removed from everything heavy and dark as the ‘post’ tag may suggest; the Italian Whales And Aurora know their craft well, in addition to being extremely capable musicians, and lay before us the meaning of atmospheric hardcore right there, with this averagely good debut album of theirs, full to the rim with adequate playing, decent song writing and punchy production that enables the album to sound greater-than-life; a pillar, a beacon of light, to the style’s purveyors and aficionados alike, having a tragic edge and a metallic stance that will grab you by the throat and captivate you with its waves of enormity. Never mind the style’s name, as this is good music for people who enjoy good music from the heavier side of the spectrum.

This Italian band was formed 4 years ago, but first album was released just 2012 (and recorded). To be honest this is next release which I do not like… here is some kind of post metal, with sludge and doom elements. So when we speaking about some sludge/doom elements, then I like this album (more or less), but when it comes to post metal, then I’m completely against such kind of music, coz I just do not understand all these light emotional rhythms… I won’t bother you by some empty words, so I’ll just write – I would prefer leave this album to some post metal fan…

Pewną ciekawostką może okazać się fakt, że z widniejącą obok okładką płyty oraz resztą szaty graficznej zespół poradził sobie sam. Pieczę nad ogółem projektu trzymał perkusista Andrea Segnini Campesato, a rysunki same w sobie wykonał Alberto Brunello, który w zespole śpiewa. Na pierwszej stronie książeczki widać niesiony falami wzburzonego morza okręt, co uwzględniwszy nazwę zespołu oraz tytuł płyty sugerowałoby, iż włoska WHALES AND AURORA to jedna z kapel posiadających pomysł na własną, w tym wypadku mocno marynistyczną aparycję. Kartkując ją wodzimy wzrokiem po dość realistycznie oddanej raz wzburzonej, innym razem spokojniejszej morskiej panoramie, nad którą rozciąga się gęste od chmur niebo i myślę, że to jedna z tych okładek, które nie od parady są szkicowane. Słuchaniu muzyki tej grupy towarzyszą bowiem emocje podobne do tych, jakie kłębią się pod skórą gdy studiujemy obwolutę “The Shipwreck” – pierwszej płyty studyjnej w dyskografii grupy i zarazem jedynego, dotychczas zarejestrowanego jej materiału. A sama muzyka to nic innego jak prosty i nader oczywisty już w tym momencie kontrast uzyskany pomiędzy podbitym siermiężną pracą sekcji sludge’owym ciężarem a utrzymanymi w zdecydowanie minimalistycznej manierze elementami post rockowymi. Dokładnie taki styl gry wypracował niegdyś NEUROSIS, dokładnie na nim oparły później swą muzykę naśladowcy z ISIS, CULT OF LUNA, BLOODIEST, A COLD DEAD BODY czy BLINDEAD na czele. W tym akurat konkretnym przypadku, nie będę miał komuś za złe, jeśli sprawi on sobie nowy krążek protoplastów rzeczonego stylu zamiast inwestować czas w zapoznawanie się z nowicjuszami, bo NEUROSIS mistrzem konwencji był, jest, a najnowszy ich wałek pod tytułem “Honor Found In Decay” (który w podsumowaniu zeszłorocznych wydawnictw pominąłem – pośród kilku innych – wyłącznie by zostawić miejsce dla ‘młodych’) rzuca srogie wyzwanie tym, co to świeżym okiem na gatunkowe prawidła, z racji stażu na scenie, spojrzeć by mogli. ‘Zorzę Wielorybom’ roztacza fakt, że w przeciwieństwie do wspomnianych wyżej nazw, w mniejszym stopniu skupiają się oni na elementach progresywnych, co czyni ich muzykę surową, obnażoną, minimalistyczną, więc i w pewnym sensie oryginalną. W pewnym sensie, bo z przykuwaniem mojej uwagi wcale nie idzie im jak po maśle. Raz jest z wokalem (podręcznikowo ruszający “Refused Recounting Words”, niepozorny “Abandoned Among Echoes”), raz bez (kakofoniczno gitarowy “The Aground Hard Ship”, liryczny “Awakened By the Aurora”). Raz zespół wali po uszach talerzowym szelestem i mocarnymi riffami, raz uspokaja delikatniejszymi leadami gitar i taką grą sekcji rytmicznej, jaka nie zdziwiłaby nikogo w pop rockowym przytulańcu, a wszystko to faluje w pianie gitarowych efektów skutecznie zagłuszając i tak pojawiający się rzadko wokal. Dobrze, że goście zostawili na koniec to, co najlepsze, bo w przeciwnym razie ciężko byłoby mi zmotywować się do pełnych okrążeń z tym kółkiem. W “A New Awareness” dostajemy więc najbardziej emocjonujący gitarowy motyw, a rozwijający temat w utworze zawarty, końcowy, instrumentalny “Floating On Calm Waters” został uatrakcyjniony może i nie najbardziej intrygującymi, ale na pewno udanymi partiami wiolonczeli Julii Ivanovy. Nawet jeśli ktoś nie jest typowym szczurem lądowym, jeśli nie lęka się sztormów czy rozciągającego się aż po horyzont, otulonego ciszą, niemal nieruchomego lustra wody, to i tak musi liczyć się z pewnym ryzykiem złapania choroby morskiej wybierając się w ten rejs, gdyż WHALES AND AURORA źle może nie gra, lecz z całą pewnością dryfuje daleko od poziomu swych idoli.

Con ‘The Shipwreck’, los italianos Whales and Aurora nos muestran su debut unos años después de su nacimiento como banda. En este álbum, con fecha en el año que acaba de concluir y concebido en los estudios Raptor por Matteo Tabacco y Chris Dowhan, podemos encontrar un interesante amalgama entre Sludge y Post-Metal que en más de una ocasión se sale de los cánones típicos del estilo alterando puntualmente elementos como el orden típico de estructuras o el uso de melodías poco convencionales a través de sus riffs. Partiendo del abanico infinito de posibilidades que la música ofrece para conformar un estilo propio y personal, este quinteto se ha aplicado el cuento cogiendo un poco de aquí y otro poco de allá para, sin hacer nada novedoso, crear un disco muy atractivo, estimulante y, en su transcurso, gradualmente persuasivo.

El concepto del disco gira en torno a una serie de planteamientos existencialistas sobre la condición humana centrados en la soledad, el abandono y la impotencia. Un concepto, al igual que la música que lo contiene, lleno de contrastes: lo real frente a lo imaginario, lo material frente a lo ideal, la luz frente a la oscuridad. Todo ello queda bien plasmado en el artwork donde se puede apreciar esa conexión entre nubes y agua como un nexo entre lo etéreo e incorpóreo con el elemento terrestre, físico; además del barco que lleva implícita dicha connotación solitaria.

En mi opinión el disco también puede dividirse en dos partes. Un primera estaría formada por “Refused Recounting Words”, riffs a medio tiempo con aires bastante ‘épicos’ (por catalogarlos de alguna forma), de tonalidades graves, embebidos en la característica atmósfera post-metalera; “Achieving the Unavoidable”, que se carga a la espalda las características de Cult of Luna, y la ambiental “The Aground Hard-Ship”, que bien podría incluirse en el EP formado por las rarezas resultantes del Wake/Lift de Rosetta.

A partir de este momento el álbum va creciendo en calidad debido, en gran parte, a que se vuelve más rico y compacto estructuralmente, y más opresivo en el apartado conceptual. “Abandoned Among Echoes” puede recordarnos a las partes más furiosas de Isis pero como si sucediese una especie de inversión, el clímax se mantiene durante los primeros minutos de vida de la composición para ir muriendo poco a poco y encontrarse con la volátil y confortante “Awakened by the Aurora”. El vínculo de estas dos composiciones, que dibujan el ecuador del álbum, llamo a que sea el tesoro oculto del mismo. Por último el tándem “A New Awareness”y “Floating on Calm Waters” supone un desenlace quizá algo lineal, sin demasiados cambios ni adquisición de mayor contundencia musical. Más bien todo lo contrario, constituye los taciturnos últimos minutos de una obra abocada a una autentica expiración en la que la inclusión de un cello establece una atmósfera verdaderamente aflictiva.

Un álbum que todo amante del estilo debería darle una oportunidad ya que las primeras andanzas de estos italianos no van por mal camino y parecen dirigirse hacia la tierra de las maravillas.

Post-Metal with Doom and Sludge Metal influences bode well in Italy when quartet Whales & Aurora release their debut album ‘The Shipwreck’ which sees songs as long as any political debate, for forty odd minutes, the atmosphere shifts from bleak to bleaker and as a result takes the listener on a journey south into the frozen lands of Antarctica where ‘The Shipwreck’ can be found, iced over from the bitterness of the elements found on this grim album release, all that can be said is if you want a Shakespearean tragedy in one release, you’ve find it.
