Pure Nothing Worship

Before us is the fourth album of these (un)dead musicians. For a long time we didn’t knew from where this funeral group comes from (Saint Petersburg according to some) and it’s still unknown who the members are. The fourth album is consisted of a single funeral hymn that will bury you alive for almost 50 minutes. You could say that this song is a lot more progressive than their earlier works, but it still remains in the genre that they present so well. Vocals, sang on the ancient language of the dead, is burried in the music, but that is not a minus, it works with the heavy and corrosive atmosphere. The earlier works were more malignant, this song is more woeful and depressive. Almost a beginning of an end. Maybe they wanted to wake the Gods of underworld to bury this worthless humanity. We wait for the end, we wait to move down, while we listen to this requiem of the dead.

Crossover

Doskonałe, przestrzenne brzmienie, świetne pomysły i wykonanie, niesamowite wyczucie melodii i przygnębiający ciężar, a wszystko zapodane w bardzo wyrafinowany sposób pełen improwizacji i powolnego, acz skutecznego budowania podniosłego klimatu. Czego i Wam życzę :)

Russian funeral doom metal band EA ready to show us its new album, all previous albums were good, so let’s see what’s here. First my opinion was like “Oh shit! Just one song on about 47 minutes?! I’ll die while listening!”, but, luckily, there is conceptual song, like several songs gathered in one. Musically, great thing EA do not stay on one place and this album isn’t something like continuation of previous, means EA has composed completely new album, and that’s good. But they are still into funeral doom themes, and (again) luckily both music and moods are on the top. Slow, sometimes abstract and deep music, with really funeral and depressive tunes, sounds pretty interesting and you can’t think about anything except of some imaginations which came to your mind with this music… As for my own imagination during this album listening, there is some another planet, with completely dying race and nature, and these are last 47 minutes until ALL around will be dead… And looking deeply, I have understood this is about our planet… Sometimes such happens, and all will be dead…

Very deep album, total recommendations!

And the "Living In A Box" crown for repetitiveness* goes to… Ea, lord of the deeps, for the Ea, Ea, "Ea" trifecta. Ea features one lone, solitary, monolithic track with a two letter name in which the band plays some 47 minutes of doom.

Perhaps it was a case of exceedingly high expectations, but I found this ambitious piece disappointing.

"Ea" has everything one might expect in some experimental exercise in extended extreme doom. We've got stark, foreboding piano; we have washes of keyboard; quiet moments; crushing distorted guitar riffs; growled vocals; and splashing in puddles (yep!)… The problem is it is all there in one ridiculously long, meandering, almost directionless song, but nothing about it really stood out.

Naked, low piano notes signal impending misery before being followed by crushing doom with growled vocals which gives way to a couple minutes of church organ and choral vocals gives way back to slow, distorted, sinister guitar riff which grows into synth coated choral vocals with said riff, then guitar solo followed by growls and choral synth with melancholic lead….

Ok, I'll stop for a moment here after the loneliness of the long distance run-on, but that is kind of a decent representation of how the album feels. Like the Energizer bunny, it just keeps going and going and going…

Truthfully, the music is very good and enjoyable when taken down to the component parts. There isn't really anything wrong with the execution or sound, beyond some flat sounding drums. It all sound lush at times, sparse at others, warm here, ominous there… It just doesn't feel entirely coherent. For example at the 16:30 mark, a clean guitar section sounds finds the introduction of a gently flowing stream, which lasts for 25 seconds… then is gone as quickly as it came. Perhaps there is some deep symbolism going on for the whole long piece - like a hike down into the riff-filled land and maybe passing a babbling brook on the way - but if it is not one to which the listener is privy, it comes across disjointed.

The net result is despite all the wonderful components and beauty, the entire thing is a tad ephemeral. It doesn't suck you in and drag you under, so much as just dances a tad out of reach. On that level, it is a great album to put on come bed time… it's been on my mp3 player for the last week when it's time to crash.

*While the aforementioned British band named the band, the record, and the hit song, you guessed it, "Living In A Box."

The fourth album of this mysterious band appeared as an unexpected postscript to the previously released trilogy. This new untitled work represented by a single monolith track has no musical and ideological connections to the trilogy; however, it presents further progress of Ea ideas.

The fourth album of the band has a very apocalyptic start, low tuned piano passages backed up by a very haunting noise in the background. It really gives you the impression of a corroded world, a grey and empty landscape. The funeral part is not far away, is starts right away as the “intro” is over, low tuned and monotonous guitar riffs, hypnotizing drums and very atmospheric keyboards.
The album grows in intensity and after 6 minutes the keyboards are transforming in a somewhat apocalyptic chorus, foretelling the disaster that will follow. Low growled vocals followed by destroying drums … all is over, nothing remains, the keyboards take the form of a cathedral sound accompanied by a choir, a choir that seems to confirm that everything has passed away, amplifying the sensation created.

This moment can be interpreted as a transition to a second part of the song (minute 9-10), the pace is constant, in a funeral doom way, a choir atmosphere, low growled vocals and some catchy guitar solos. This is a full process of recovery, when the world starts to catch live, a moment of contemplation that can be heard from minute 16.

This constant struggle, this battle from the start is far from over, everything is going in a circle, the next moment of intensity starts in the 24th minute, there’s a constant growth in pace, the vocals are more similar to black metal rather than Doom, all of this details are accompanied by some fast drumming and sorrowful guitar solos, but after this, there is the silence again … although this time it seems that the result is quite different, something has changed. There is no more recovery, you have the impression that everything is just taking another form, all of the surrounding places are transforming in a cold, gloomy and haunting funeral atmosphere.

Perhaps everyone will imagine their own world when listening to Ea, therefore I believe that any review of a very atmospheric and funeral doomish song, that is about 47 minutes can be resumed only to your own imagination and association between sound and images. So, if you want to create your own world you need to listen to this album. The album is unique, as Ea used us with, it is very atmospheric and a progress of their ideas.

Ea.

As far as I have noticed, the new album “Ea” by the mysterious Russian band with the same name is rated very well by many music critics and fans. It is said to be the best release of EA to date, but I disagree. The new album is better than the previous ones “Ea II” and “Au Ella”, but you cannot even begin to compare it with the magical, exceptional debut album “Ea Taesse”. In the beginning of their career EA radiated dreamlike feelings and mysticism. Unfortunately this band’s work is becoming more predictable, sounding like any other Funeral Doom Metal. In my opinion the new release has lost the magical origin, but it’s more balanced and matured than the two previous albums. Moreover “Ea” consists of only one track which is structurally well composed and harmonized. Maybe its sound is just a little more dissonant, but this adds extra character. Since the band’s members hide their identities, do not give any interviews and etc., their music should be more mysterious as well. This new album is a good shot of melancholy and deathly scent, but EA can do better.
